On backward problem for a time-fractional fourth order parabolic equation

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the inverse problem of retrieving the initial value of a time-fractional fourth order parabolic equation from source and final time observation. The considered problem is an {\it ill-posed problem.} We obtain regularized approximations for the sought initial value by employing the quasi-boundary value method, its modified version and by Fourier truncation method(FTM). We provide both the apriori and aposteriori parameter choice strategies and derive the error estimates for all these methods under some {\it source conditions} involving some Sobolev smoothness. As an important implication of the obtained rates, we observe that for both the apriori and aposteriori cases, the rates obtained by all these three methods are same for some source sets. Moreover, we observe that in both the apriori and aposteriori cases, the FTM is free from the so-called {\it saturation effect}, whereas both the quasi-boundary value method and its generalizations possesses the saturation effect for both the cases. Further, we observe that the rates obtained by the FTM is always order optimal for all the considered source sets.

Abstract:Inverse source problems for partial differential equations are of interest both in mathematics and in engineering. In this paper, we consider the problem of recovering the spatial contamination source in the diffusion model with the local measurements at fixed times. One example is constructed to show that the local measurements at one fixed time are not enough to determine the source. We propose the problem of recovering the source with the local measurements at two different fixed times. The uniqueness and conditional stability estimate are proved by the analytic continuation method.

Abstract:Two main aims of this paper are to develop a numerical method to solve an inverse source problem for parabolic equations and apply it to solve a nonlinear coefficient inverse problem. The inverse source problem in this paper is the problem to reconstruct a source term from external observations. Our method to solve this inverse source problem consists of two stages. We first establish an equation of the derivative of the solution to the parabolic equation with respect to the time variable. Then, in the second stage, we solve this equation by the quasi-reversibility method. The inverse source problem considered in this paper is the linearization of a nonlinear coefficient inverse problem. Hence, iteratively solving the inverse source problem provides the numerical solution to that coefficient inverse problem. Numerical results for the inverse source problem under consideration and the corresponding nonlinear coefficient inverse problem are presented.

Abstract:This paper explores an inverse problem pertaining to the determination of a source function in non‐divergence parabolic equations, where the solution is known at a discrete set of points. Being different from other ordinary inverse source problems, which are often dependent on only one variable, the unknown coefficient in this paper not only depends on the space variable x but also depends on the time t . On the basis of the optimal control framework, the existence of the optimal solution of the control function is proved. The necessary conditions to be satisfied by the optimal solution are given. The convergence of the optimal solution when the mesh parameters tend to zero is obtained. The conjugate gradient method is applied to the inverse problem and some numerical results are presented for various typical test examples.

Abstract:A new method of the reproducing kernel Hilbert space is applied to a two-dimensional parabolic inverse source problem with the final overdetermination. The exact and approximate solutions are both obtained in a reproducing kernel space. The approximate solution and its partial derivatives are proved to converge to the exact solution and its partial derivatives, respectively. A technique is proposed to improve some existing methods. Numerical results show that the method is of high precision, and confirm the robustness of our method for reconstructing source parameter.

Abstract:This paper aims to recover the initial value and source term simultaneously in the parabolic equations with convective term from measurements at two fixed times t0 and T . In particular, we analyze the ill‐posedness of the inverse problem and then apply the Fourier truncated regularization method to solve the inverse problem. A theoretical analysis of the error estimation for the initial value and source term is also given. Finally, we present some numerical examples to verify the validity and feasibility of the proposed method.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to recovering the source term for a time-fractional diffusion equation from additional temperature data at fixed time t=1. We discuss a uniqueness result of the direct problem and the ill-posedness of the inverse problem, and then apply the iterative quasi-reversibility regularization method to solve the inverse problem. Finally, some one-dimensional and two-dimensional numerical examples are given to verify the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed method.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider an inverse problem to determine a source term in a parabolic equation, where the data are obtained at a certain time. In general, this problem is ill-posed, therefore the Tikhonov regularization method is proposed to solve the problem. In the theoretical results, a priori error estimate between the exact solution and its regularized solutions is obtained. We also propose both methods, a priori and a posteriori parameter choice rules. In addition, the proposed methods have been verified by numerical experiments to estimate the errors between the regularized solutions and exact solutions. Eventually, from the numerical results it shows that the a posteriori parameter choice rule method gives a better the convergence speed in comparison with the a priori parameter choice rule method in some specific applications.

Abstract:This corrigendum corrects some errors of the paper entitled “Surface effect on the contact problem of a piezoelectric half-plane”, International Journal of Solids and Structures 185-186 (2020) 380–393 (Song et al., 2020). Because there is an error in the Fortran code when we calculate the numerical solution of the contact stress and electric displacement, their values become smaller compared to the original results. Moreover, the influencing trends of the surface effect are slightly different from the original results. However, the formulations of the original paper are intact.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the problem of identifying source term and initial value simultaneously for fractional pseudo-parabolic equation with involution. This is an ill-posed problem and the conditional stability is given. A hybrid regularization method, which combines the modified quasi-inverse and the modified quasi-initial value, is used to deal with the inverse problem. The error estimates of the exact solutions and the regularization solutions are given respectively under the priori and the posteriori regularization parameter choice rules. Several numerical examples are presented to certify the hybrid regularization method is effective.
