Abstract:Chiral N-oxide salen ligands and their corresponding Al complexes were synthesized. Notably, the catalytic activity and asymmetric induction ability of the bifunctional N-oxide salen-Al for asymmetric cyanosilylation were compared with that of bi-component catalyst system including chiral pyrrolidine salen–Al complex and Ph3PO. Interestingly, introducing N-oxide group in salen unit could enhance the activity and enantioselectivity of bifunctional catalyst without further adding Ph3PO as co-catalyst and inverse configurations were generated from the two systems. In addition, excellent yields and high ee values could be obtained under milder conditions in bifunctional catalyst system compared with that of bi-component catalyst system.

Abstract:A series of chiral 1,1'-binaphthyl-2,2'-disulfonic acids was designed, synthesized, and applied in a highly enantioselective Ti-catalyzed intramolecular hydroalkoxylation of nonactivated alkenes. The catalyst is probably a complex between two chiral binaphthyldisulfonate ligands and a bis(mu-oxo)-dititanium(IV) core structure. The sulfonamide groups of the ligands and water are necessary for the catalysis, as they may stabilize the catalytically active complex through hydrogen bonding. Various 2-methylcoumarans were obtained in up to greater than 99% yields and up to 97% enantiomeric excess under mild conditions.

Abstract:The catalytic asymmetric construction of axially chiral C-N atropisomers remains a formidable challenge due to their low rotational barriers and is largely reliant on toxic, cost-intensive, and precious metal catalysts. In sharp contrast, we herein describe the first nickel-catalyzed atroposelective C-H alkylation for the construction of C-N axially chiral compounds with the aid of a chiral heteroatom-substituted secondary phosphine oxide (HASPO)-ligated Ni-Al bimetallic catalyst. A wide range of alkenes, including terminal and internal alkenes, were well compatible with the reaction, providing a variety of benzimidazole derivatives in high yields and enantioselectivities (up to 97:3 e.r.). The key to success was the identification of novel HASPOs as highly effective chiral preligands. Mechanistic studies revealed the catalyst mode of action, and in-depth data science analysis elucidated the key features of the responsible chiral preligands in controlling the enantioselectivity.

Abstract:Recent years have witnessed the growing interest in the remote functionalization of alkenes for it offers a strategy to activate the challenging C-H bonds distant from the initiation point via alkene isomerization/functionalization. However, the catalytic enantioselective isomerization/functionalization with one single transition metal catalyst remains rare. Here we report a highly regio- and enantioselective cobalt-catalyzed remote C-H bond borylation of internal alkenes via sequential alkene isomerization/hydroboration. A chiral ligand featured twisted pincer, anionic, and non-rigid characters is designed and used for this transformation. This methodology, which is operationally simple using low catalyst loading without additional activator, shows excellent enantioselectivity and can be used to convert various internal alkenes with regio- and stereoisomers to valuable chiral secondary organoboronates with good functional group tolerance.

Abstract:Chiral C2-symmetric N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) palladium diaquo complexes 5a–c and the chiral C2-symmetric NHC-palladium complexes 5d and 5e prepared from (R)-BINAM or H8-(R)-BINAM could be used as the catalysts for the enantioselective arylation of arylaldehydes with arylboronic acids in which NHC-Pd complex 5a was found to be fairly effective in this reaction to give the corresponding adducts in moderate enantioselectivities along with moderate to good yields.

Abstract:Asymmetric sequential hydrogenations of conjugated enynes have been developed using a Ph-BPE-Co-I catalyst for the precise synthesis of chiral Z-allylamides in high activity (up to 1000 substrate/catalyst (S/C)) and with excellent enantioselectivity (up to >99 % enantiomeric excess (ee)). Mechanism experiments and theoretical calculations support a cationic Co-I/Co-III redox catalytic cycle. The catalytic activity difference between cobalt complexes of Ph-BPE and QuinoxP* was explained by the process decomposition of rate-determining step in the second hydrogenation.

Abstract:Catalytic enantioselective alkenylation of aldehydes with easily accessible alkenyl halides promoted by a chiral cobalt complex derived from a newly developed tridentate bisoxazolinephosphine is presented. Such processes represent an unprecedented reaction pathway for cobalt catalysis and a general approach that enable rapid construction of highly diversified enantioenriched allylic alcohols containing a 1,1-, 1,2-disubstituted and trisubstituted alkene as well as axial stereogenicity in up to 99% yield and 99:1 er without the need of preformation of alkenyl–metal reagents. DFT calculations revealed the origin of enantioselectivity.

Abstract:We present herein a novel cobalt/zinc bimetallic catalysis system for the realization of an efficient and enantioselective alkynylation of isatins and α-ketoesters using terminal alkynes. By using a simple procedure with all commercially available catalysts, including cobalt bromide, a chiral bisphosphine ligand, and zinc triflate, a range of synthetically useful tertiary propargylic alcohols are accessed with high yields and good enantioselectivities. Control reactions showed that this catalytic system proceeds through activation of the terminal alkyne by zinc triflate and a base, transmetalation from zinc to cobalt, and then the enantio-determining alkynylation of ketones.

Abstract:Novel C-2-symmetrical bissulfonamide ligands were easily prepared in three simple steps and applied in the enantioselective addition of alkynylzinc reagents to aldehydes. Compound 7a was found to be an outstanding ligand for this reaction. When the catalyst loading, 4 mol % of 7a, was used, high enantioselectivity with an ee value up to 97% was achieved under very mild conditions. When the amount of ligand 7a was lowered to 2 mol %, excellent levels of enantiocontrol up to 95% ee were still achieved. So far the most economic catalyst system was developed for the addition of terminal alkynes to aromatic aldehydes in terms of ligand loading and enantioselectivity. Moreover, ligand 7a in combination with Ti(O-i-Pr)(4) was found to be effective in promoting the addition reaction of an alkynylzinc reagent to unactivated simple ketones under very mild conditions. The corresponding chiral tertiary propargylic alcohols were obtained with enantiomeric excesses of up to 81%.

Abstract:A homochiral porous noninterpenetrating metal-organic framework (MOF), 1, was constructed by linking infinite 1D [Cd(mu-Cl)2]n zigzag chains with axially chiral bipyridine bridging ligands containing orthogonal secondary functional groups. The secondary chiral dihydroxy groups accessible via the large open channels in 1 were utilized to generate a heterogeneous asymmetric catalyst for the addition of diethyzinc to aromatic aldehydes to afford chiral secondary alcohols at up to 93% enantiomeric excess (ee). Control experiments with dendritic aromatic aldehydes of different sizes indicate that the heterogeneous asymmetric catalyst derived from 1 is both highly active and enantioselective as a result of the creation of readily accessible, uniform active catalyst sites inside the porous MOF.

Abstract:The concept of atropisomeric N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-metal complexes was extended to NHCs possessing a C2-symmetry and implemented to prepare palladium-based complexes. An in-depth study of the NHC precursors and the screening of various NHC ligands enabled us to circumvent the issue associated with the formation of meso complexes. A set of 8 atropisomeric NHC-palladium complexes were prepared and then obtained with high enantiopurities, thanks to an efficient resolution by chiral HPLC at the preparative scale. These complexes displayed good activity in the intramolecular α-arylation of amides and various cyclic products were isolated with excellent enantioselectivities (up to 98% ee).

Abstract:Chiral C-2-symmetric diamines have emerged as versatile auxiliaries or ligands in numerous asymmetric transformations. Chiral 2,2'-bispyrrolidine-based salan ligands were prepared and applied to the asymmetric aryl transfer to aldehydes with arylboronic acids as the source of transferable aryl groups. The corresponding diarylmethanols were obtained in high yields with moderate to good enantioselectivitives of up to 83% ee.

Abstract:A series of chiral ligands 2a–d were conveniently prepared from β-amino alcohols through a two-step sequence and applied to catalysis of enantioselective addition of diethylzinc to benzaldehyde. Among them ligand 2c was found to show the best asymmetric induction for the reaction and catalyze the addition to various aromatic aldehydes to provide (R)-secondary alcohols in up to 98.3% ee.

Abstract:Metal clusters with well-defined crystal structures are extremely useful for studying the synergistic catalytic effects and associated catalytic mechanisms. In this study, two pairs of chiral lanthanide-transition metal clusters (R)/(S)-Co3Ln2 (Ln = Tb or Dy) were synthesized using Schiff-base ligands [(R)- or (S)-H3L] with multiple Lewis base sites (O sites). The as-prepared (R)/(S)-Co3Ln2 chiral metal clusters exhibited good catalytic functionality in the asymmetric synthesis of chiral cyanohydrins, with high conversions of up to 99% and medium-to-high enantiomeric excess values of up to 78%. The catalysis process followed a mechanism in which the bifunctional metal clusters of (R)/(S)-Co3Ln2, containing Lewis acid sites and Lewis base sites, simultaneously activated the aldehydes and trimethylsilyl cyanide, respectively. Consequently, synergistic catalysis was realized. The enantioselectivity of the different aldehydes and stereochemical configuration of the resulting products are attributed to the formation of a steric chiral pocket via the external chiral ligands on the clusters. In addition, heterogeneous asymmetric cyanosilylation using (R)/(S)-Co3Ln2 chiral metal clusters achieved high chemoselectivity and regioselectivity under mild conditions.
