Abstract:We show that by placing a single CdSe/ZnS quantum dot QD near a high-reflective optical mirror, both the photoluminescence intensity and the blinking statistics can be modified significantly and controlled deterministically by changing the dot-mirror distance. The modified local optical mode density in proximity to the QD alters the internal dynamics of the QD, which controls its blinking behavior. Such external controls of single-QD blinking can help us to better understand the underlying mechanism of the blinking process and lead to interesting applications of such QDs.

Abstract:Blinking and time correlation between fluorescences of neighboring negatively charged CdSe/CdS and CdSe/ZnS colloidal quantum dots have been studied experimentally. A tendency of synchronous blinking, that is, a bunching effect, is clearly observed from two neighboring QDs with a spatial separation up to 1.1 mu m. We believe that our observations will help to better understand the mechanisms for the blinking.

Abstract:The fluorescence intermittency of multilayered quantum dots (QDs) is experimentally investigated. The measured blinking statistical probabilities for QDs of different shell structures and at different excitation powers are compared with the diffusion controlled electron transfer model. The results show that the power law statistics for the “on” and “off” events depend strongly on the structure and thicknesses of the shells. Strongly suppressed blinking behavior is observed in the CdSe/CdS/ZnCdS/ZnS QDs.

Abstract:The discrete states resulting from three-dimensional confinement in semiconductor quantum dots retain much of the character of their bulk-band origins, for example their angular momentum and effective mass. In addition they have many features of discrete atomic-like single particle states. Strong optical field interactions and reasonable dephasing rates make this system attractive for basic quantum optics experiments, as well as applications in quantum information sciences. However, semiconductor quantum dots have large inhomogeneous state broadens due to variations in size and shape. In addition, epitaxial semiconductor quantum dots, one of the classes in common use, rarely have ideal symmetry. Here we show how an optical technique can be used to fine-tune the transition energies of semiconductor quantum dots states and if desired restore targeted symmetry elements. This approach can be applied to establish degeneracies in biexciton-exciton decays to form discrete entangled photon pairs or to establish indistinguishability between different quantum dots.

Abstract:Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are very important optical nanomaterials with a wide range of potential applications. However, the blinking of single QDs is an intrinsic drawback for some biological and photoelectric applications based on single-dot emission. In this work, we systematically investigated the effects of certain synthetic conditions on the blinking behavior of aqueous CdTeS alloyed QDs, and observed that blinking behaviors of QDs were able to be controlled by the structure and concentration of the thiol compounds that were used as surface ligands. In optimal conditions, completely nonblinking QDs were prepared using certain thiol ligands as stabilizers in aqueous phase. The suppressed blinking mechanism was mainly attributed to elimination of QDs surface traps by coordination of thiol ligands with vacant Cd atoms, formation of appropriate CdS coating on QDs, and controlling the growth dynamics of QDs. Nonblinking QDs show high quantum yield, small size, and good solubility, and will be applied to some fields that were previously limited by blinking of traditional QDs.
Optical Study of Spatially Ordered Inas Quantum Dots in Disk-Like Structures

Abstract:InAs quantum dots (QD) made by self-assembled growth naturally have a random spatial and large spectral distribution. However the spatial and spectral profile of an optical cavity mode are highly predictable. To achieve the maximum interaction of single QD spontaneous emission (SE) with a cavity mode, QDs should ideally be spatially located in the cavity mode, but well isolated from nearby nonradiative surface recombination. To solve this issue, we have developed a patterned regrowth technique to place QDs near the antinode of a cavity mode. We show that the regrowth process does not affect the QDs optical properties while maintaining reasonable cavity quality factors. The PL signature of our QDs is discussed. We identify the single excitons, charged excitons and bi-excitions. Their relative intensities are decided by the excessive energy of free carriers and tunable by the sample temperature. In our research, we see strong evidence of disk sizing effect, which provide additional method to control the QD density besides material deposition and growth temperature. With this additional tunability, the QD density can be adjusted to produce low numbers of QDs (1 similar to 3 dots) per disk, so the optimal coupling of a single QD with a single cavity mode is quite plausible.

Abstract:Here we report the first series of phase-pure zinc-blende CdSe/CdS core/shell quantum dots (QDs) with reproducibly controlled shell thickness (4-16 monolayers), which are nonblinking (≥95% 'on' time) in single-exciton regime for the entire series. These unique QDs possess well-controlled yet simple excited-state decay dynamics at both single-dot and ensemble levels, extremely small nonblinking volume threshold, if any, and unique 'on' and 'off' probability statistics. The outstanding optical properties of the QDs at the single-dot level were found to be correlated well with their ensemble properties. These small and bright nonblinking QDs offer promising technical application prospect in both single-dot and ensemble levels. The consistent and reproducible experimental results shed new light on the mechanisms of blinking of QDs.

Abstract:CdSe/ZnS colloidal quantum dots generally exist as blinking phenomena during the luminescence process that remarkably influences its applications. In this work, we used the surface plasmonic effect to effectively modulate single quantum dots. Obvious contrasts have been observed by comparing single quantum dots on silica and gold films. The surface plasmon is shown to obviously suppress the blinking of single quantum dots. With further demonstrated second- order correlation measurements, an anti-bunching effect was observed. The anti-bunching dip gives the smallest value of g(2)(0) = 0.15, and the lifetime of the exciton has been reduced. This method presents the application's potential towards tunable high-emitting-speed single photon sources at room temperature.

Abstract:We report on the study of CdSe quantum dot microcavity formed between two distributed Bragg reflectors （DBRs）.The active region consisting of CdSe quantum dots is embedded in PMMA.We use the transfer matrix method （TMM） to simulate the reflectivity spectrum of the microcavity.We demonstrate an enhancement of the spontaneous emission from the colloidal CdSe quantum dots in the microcavity.After embedding the QDs in the cavity,the full width at half maximum （FWHM） is narrowed to 7.5 nm compared with 27.9 nm of QDs in free space.The emission of the quantum dots is enhanced by a factor of 3.7 due to the microcavity effect.
Blinking, Flickering, and Correlation in Fluorescence of Single Colloidal CdSe Quantum Dots with Different Shells under Different Excitations

Abstract:We studied the fluorescence spectra from single CdSe core-CdS/ZnS and CdS/CdZnS/ZnS shell colloidal quantum dots (QDs) (different shell thicknesses and different surface ligands) under different optical excitations. It was found that the single QD blinks (on and off) at low excitation and flickers (without distinguishable on and off) under high excitation. Theoretical analysis suggests that under low excitation the single QD blinks due to transfer of the photogenerated electron and hole between QD core states and surface states, and the transfer rate is inversely proportional to the shell thickness, as demonstrated experimentally. Under high excitation, the photogenerated electron and hole via interband excitation are further excited via intraband excitation, which will keep the electron and hole from relaxing to the ground exciton state, therefore significantly suppressing the radiative interband recombination, resulting in QD flickering. It was further observed experimentally that the fluorescence events from two neighboring QDs under high excitation are correlated. The correlation can be most possibly understood that one QD, which is kept at the excited state by the high excitation, radiatively recombines under the stimulation of the emission from its neighboring QD.
Experimental Studies on Blinking Behavior of Single Inp/Zns Quantum Dots: Effects of Synthetic Conditions and Uv Irradiation

Abstract:In this study, we first synthesized a series of highly fluorescent InP/ZnS core/shell QDs under varied reaction conditions and then systematically investigated the blinking behaviors of QDs by single molecule imaging technique. In the measurement of blinking processes, the PL intensity trajectories of single QDs with different emission peak were recorded by a total internal reflection fluorescence (TIRF) imaging system. We observed that particle size, molar ratio of myristic acid/indium (MA:In), and the overcoating of ZnS shell had significant influence on the blinking behaviors of InP/ZnS QDs. Statistical analysis documented that both the on and off events (m(on) and m(off)) followed the power-law distributions P(t(on/off)) = Bt(-mon/off), and the values for m(on) and m(off) were in the ranges of 1.3-1.7 and 1.4-1.9, respectively. As the wavelength of emission peak increased from 565 to 646 nm, the on-time fraction changed from 30% to 70%. The QDs prepared under higher MA/In ratio possessed a longer on-time fraction. The optimal overcoating time of the ZnS shell was about 3 h for blinking suppression in this case. Furthermore, we found that UV irradiation of QDs certainly suppressed the off-time fraction by reducing surface traps. We were able to control the blinking behavior of QDs by varying the synthesis parameters, and prepared InP/ZnS QDs with the on-time fraction up to 80% for future biological and photoelectric applications.

Abstract:CdSe/ZnS colloidal quantum dot generally exists blinking phenomenon during luminescence process, that remarkably influences its application as a single photon source. In this work, we used the effect of surface plasmon to effectively suppressed the blinking by locating quantum dot on gold film. The anti-bunching character was also observed with g((2))(0) as low as 0.34 at room temperature. Surface plasmon was shown to enhance the photoluminescence and reduce the lifetime of exciton, which was controlled by excitation power. Our result suggests a potential way to utilize CdSe/ZnS as a high efficient single photon emitter in optics.

Abstract:Abstract Almost all colloidal quantum dots (QDs) exhibit undesired photoluminescence (PL) blinking, which poses a significant obstacle to their use in numerous luminescence applications. An in‐depth study of the blinking behavior, along with the associated mechanisms, can provide critical opportunities for fabricating high‐quality QDs for diverse applications. Here the blinking of a large series of colloidal QDs is investigated with different surface ligands, particle sizes, shell thicknesses, and compositions. It is found that the blinking behavior of single alloyed CdSe/ZnS QDs with a shell thickness of up to 2 nm undergoes an irreversible conversion from Auger‐blinking to band‐edge carrier blinking (BC‐blinking). Contrastingly, single perovskite QDs with particle sizes smaller than their Bohr diameters exhibit reversible conversion between BC‐blinking and more pronounced Auger‐blinking. Changes in the effective trapping sites under different excitation conditions are found to be responsible for the blinking type conversions. Additionally, changes in shell thickness and particle size of QDs have a significant effect on the blinking type conversions due to altered wavefunction overlap between excitons and effective trapping sites. This study elucidates the discrepancies in the blinking behavior of various QD samples observed in previous reports and provides deeper understanding of the mechanisms underlying diverse types of blinking.

Bright nonblinking photoluminescence with blinking lifetime from a nanocavity-coupled quantum dot

Abstract:Colloidal semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are excellent luminescent nanomaterials for a broad range of optoelectronic applications. Their photoluminescence blinking, however, hinders their practical use in many aspects. It has been shown that coupling QDs to plasmonic nanostructures may provide a viable way to suppress blinking. Nevertheless, the underlying mechanism of blinking suppression remains unclear and debated. Here, by deterministically coupling a single QD to a plasmonic nanocavity, we clarify the mechanism of blinking suppression, and demonstrate unprecedentedly bright emission from a single colloidal QD. In particular, we report for the first time that the coupled system exhibits nonblinking photoluminescence with blinking lifetime, which shows that the elimination of photoluminescence blinking originates from enhanced quantum yield of the charged states. We identify that the radiative decay rate is boosted from (48 ns)-1 to (0.7 ns)-1, which outcompetes Auger processes and enables similar quantum yields for charged and neutral excitons. Moreover, we demonstrate ultrabright photoluminescence of up to 17 million detected photons per second from a single QD. This work sheds new light on the goal of achieving ultrabright nonblinking QDs and may benefit a variety of QD-based applications.

Abstract:We investigate the emitting dynamics of single CdSe/ZnS core-shell quantum dots (QDs) by employing a defocused wide-field imaging method. A rotation of the defocused images of single QDs after some blinking events is observed, which is direct evidence of the redistribution of carriers in and around single QDs. It is revealed that this change can be considered as a "self-rotation" of the electron cloud (i.e., wave statistic function) around the "dark axis" of the QDs. As all the observed rotations of the emission patterns are accompanied by blinking-off periods, we believe that the rotation of the defocused images and blinking are correlated through redistribution of charged species in and around single QDs.
OPTICAL DETECTION OF SINGLE QUANTUM STATES IN SINGLE SELF-ASSEMBLED QUANTUM DOTS

Abstract:There are mainly two categories of semiconductor quantum dots(QDs); self-assembled QDs (SAQDs)that are epitaxially grown in ultrahigh vacuum and colloidal nanocrystal ODs(NCQDs)that are chemically synthesized in solution. QDs are often referred to as "artificial atoms" due to the discrete nature of their energy states predicted from the quantum confinement effect. Unlike natural atoms, the energy states of semiconductor QDs are size-tunable, thus providing a more flexible way to control the light-matter interactions in solid state. Indeed, a rich spectrum of atomic physics and quantum optics phenomena, including quantum interference, Rabi oscillations, and Mollow fluorescence, have been demonstrated in single SAQDs. Unfortunately, none of the above atomic-like properties has ever been observed in single colloidal NCQDs. Here, we focus on single SAQDs and review several experiments either performed in our group or done in collaboration with others on the optical detection and coherent manipulation of their single quantum states. For single NCQDs, we point out that coherent manipulation of their quantum states might be achieved in the near future from completely non-blinking or blinking suppressed NCQDs synthesized recently by several groups.

Abstract:The blinking behavior of single quantum dots (QDs) is an intrinsic drawback for some biological and photoelectric applications that rely on single-dot emission. Some studies demonstrate that the blinking behavior of QDs is mainly attributed to nonradiative recombination processes associated with traps at the nanocrystal surface. In this study, we systematically investigated the effects of surface ligand alkylthiols on the blinking of CdSe/CdS QDs prepared in the organic phase and observed that the blinking of CdSe/CdS QDs was significantly dependent on the annealing time and structure and concentration of alkylthiol ligands. In the optimal conditions, we prepared thiol-modified CdSe/CdS QDs with a "nonblinking" fraction up to 83%. The mechanism of the blinking suppression was mainly attributed to modifying surface traps of QDs with alkylthiols. In this modification, the decomposition of alkylthiols can slowly release activated "S" under high temperature. Then the activated S can bind to surface traps of QDs, which induces a secondary growth of the core/shell QDs coupled with surface reconstruction and the efficient suppression of the blinking. The method described here can be used to suppress the blinking of other QDs.

Abstract:Nonblinking colloidal quantum dots (QDs) are significant to their applications as single-photon sources or light-emitting materials. Herein, a simple heat-up method was developed to synthesize high-qualityWZ-CdSe/CdS core-shell colloidal QDs, which achieved a near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). It was found that the blinking behavior of such QDs was completely suppressed at high excitation intensities, and ultra-stable PL emission was observed. For this reason, a systematic investigation was conducted, revealing that the complete blinking suppression was attributed mainly to the efficient multiexciton emission at high excitation intensities. Such high-quality QDs with nonblinking behaviors and nearly ideal PL properties at high excitation intensities have massive potential applications in various robust conditions, including QD display screens, single-particle tracks, and single-photon sources.

Abstract:Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are very important optical nanomaterials with a wide range of potential applications. However, blinking behavior of single QD is an intrinsic drawback for some biological and photoelectric applications based on single-particle emission. Herein we present a rational strategy for fabrication of non-blinking (Zn) CuInS/ZnS QDs in organic phase through in situ interfacial alloying approach. This new strategy includes three steps: synthesis of CuInS QDs, eliminating the interior traps of QDs by forming graded (Zn) CuInS alloyed QDs, modifying the surface traps of QDs by introducing ZnS shells onto (Zn) CuInS QDs using alkylthiols as sulfur source and surface ligands. The suppressed blinking mechanism was mainly attributed to modifying QDs traps from interior to exterior via a step-by-step modification. Non-blinking QDs show high quantum yield, symmetric emission spectra and excellent crystallinity, and will enable applications from biology to optoelectronics that were previously hindered by blinking behavior of traditional QDs.
