Abstract:The development of narrow emission bandwidth materials is a highly active research area in the field of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). In addition to B- and N-heterocyclic compounds, known as multiple-resonance (MR) emitters, chromophores based on multi-N-heterocycles can also achieve ultra-narrow-band blue emission. However, the reliability of devices containing the latter has been rarely investigated. In this study, we designed a rigid and electron-rich chromophore diindolo[3,2,1-de:3 & PRIME;,2 & PRIME;,1 & PRIME;-kl]phenazine (DIPz) by fusing two 9Hcarbazole. This resulted in suppressed geometric distortion and vibration coupling during excitation. Furthermore, DIPz was modified with mesityl and 4-(tert-butyl)-N-phenylaniline groups, which finally evolved into a narrow-band blue emitter tDAmDIPz. The tDAmDIPz-based device showed an emission maximum at 458 nm with a narrow full-width at half-maximum of 17 nm, and a high maximum external quantum efficiency of 9.1%. Because the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) level of - 1.98 eV for tDAmDIPz was much shallower than - 2.47 eV for the anthracene-based host, electron trapping at emitters could be prevented, resulting in a very long LT95 lifetime of 338 h at a current density of 25 mA/cm2, which was higher than devices based on traditional BN-type MR emitters. This study suggested a general relationship between the operational lifetime and the LUMO energy difference between the emitter and the host, which opens a door to extremely stable blue OLEDs.
Efficient Solution-Processed Nondoped Deep-Blue Organic Light-Emitting Diodes Based on Fluorene-Bridged Anthracene Derivatives Appended with Charge Transport Moieties

Abstract:A series of fluorene-bridged anthracene derivatives appended with different charge transport moieties were synthesized, and their thermal, photophysical, and electrochemical properties were investigated. By the introduction of fluorene between two anthracene units as well as peripheral functional aryl substituents, the sophisticated compounds show a decreased tendency to crystallize and have high glass transition temperatures ranging from 165 to 229 degrees C. The theoretical calculations reveal that the four self-hosted blue emitters possess noncoplanar structure to suppress the intermolecular interaction in films. Solution-processed small-molecular organic light-emitting diodes featuring 1 as the emitter achieve a maximum current efficiency of 2.0 cd A(-1) with Commisssion Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.15, 0.13), which are very close to the National Television Standards Committee's blue standard. A facile strategy to design solution-processable highly emissive anthracene derivatives for nondoped deep-blue electroluminescence by incorporating pi-conjugated bridge and bipolar charge transport periphery is demonstrated.

Abstract:To obtain highly efficient and stable blue electroluminescence, two novel star-shaped compounds are purposefully designed and synthesized, which are composed of two functional groups, central triphenylamine (TPA) and peripheral anthracene (AN) or phenanthrene (PA) with obviously segregative electronic density distribution characteristics between the highest occupied molecular orbital and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO and LUMO). As a light-emitting layer, they exhibit not only highly efficient deep-blue electroluminescence, but also good stability in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) due to the combination of several advantageous properties (electrochemical, thermal and morphological stability). In particular, for triphenylamine-cored phenanthrene (TPA-PA), the external quantum efficiency of 7.23% is the best reported result for non-doped deep-blue OLEDs, and the lifetime of the device is also improved, being twice that of 2-methyl-9,10-di(2-naphthyl) anthracene (MADN) under the same device conditions.

Abstract:Highly efficient deep-blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) is observed from a charge-transfer compound bis[4-(3,6-dimethoxycarbazole)phenyl]sulfone (DMOC-DPS). In comparison with the previously reported carbazole/sulfone derivative with tert-butyl substituents on the carbazole donors, DMOC-DPS exhibits a much shorter excited-state lifetime in both an aromatic solution and an organic thin film, because the change of the substituent on the donor affects the molecular energy levels of the first singlet (S1) and triplet (T1) excited states in different ways, decreasing the energy gap between S1 and T1 (ΔEST). An organic light emitting diode (OLED) based on DMOC-DPS achieves a maximum external electroluminescence quantum efficiency (EQE) of 14.5% and reduced efficiency roll-off, with Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.16, 0.16), owing to efficient exciton harvesting that occurs through triplet-to-singlet up-conversion.

Abstract:Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are expected to support the future applications in flat-panel displays and solid-state lightings owing to their advantages of flexibility, light weight, high resolution, energy conservation, etc. Achieving efficient deep blue electroluminescence with excellent color purity (narrow emission) remains a big challenge for OLEDs. Herein, two anthracene derivatives, PIAnTPh and PyIAnTPh, with a hybridized local and charge transfer (HLCT) excited state are obtained by attaching the large periphery groups of phenanthroimidazole/pyrenoimidazole and terphenyl unit to the 9,10-positions of anthracene. The sterically asymmetric strategy can efficiently suppress the unfavorable intermolecular interactions and realize deep blue emission. The introduction of neutral terphenyl unit avoids the potential reduction of fluorescence quantum yield from strong charge transfer (CT) characteristics. More importantly, the relatively weak CT state and the rigid molecular structure can significantly reduce the vibrational motion to obtain relatively narrow emission spectra. The doped devices based on PIAnTPh and PyIAnTPh show strong deep blue electroluminescence with CIE coordinates of (0.15, 0.06) and (0.15, 0.07), high color purity, and narrow full width at half maxima (FWHM) of merely 50 and 52 nm, respectively, meeting well with the EBU standard. The EQEs are as high as 8.09% and 8.44% for PIAnTPh and PyIAnTPh, which are among the state-of-the-art deep blue OLEDs.

Abstract:A deep-blue fluorescent emitter 9-(4-(10-phenylanthracene-9-yl)phenyl)-9H-carbazole (PhPC) has been synthesized and applied in organic light-emitting diode (OLED). The monochromatic device based on PhPC shows a deep-blue emission peaked at 436 nm and has CIE coordinates of (0.15, 0.05). The device has a maximum external quantum efficiency of 3.6% and a maximum current efficiency of 1.8 cd A(-1). Performance of the deep-blue emitting OLED is among the best of reported non-doped fluorescence deep-blue organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with a ClEy around 0.05. A fluorescent/phosphorescent (F/P) white OLED has been fabricated by using PhPC as a deep blue fluorescent emitter. The device shows maximum efficiencies of 27.6 lm W-1, 35.1 cd A(-1), and a maximum EQE of 17.4% with CIE coordinates of (035, 0.43). (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:This study describes the synthesis and characterization of a series of new blue fluorescent materials, with propeller-like topology, consisting of 1,3,5-tri(9-anthracene)benzene core and various aromatic dendrons, such as naphthalene, 3,5-diphenylbenzene, carbazole, and N,N-diphenylamine. These compounds show excellent thermal and morphological stability with high glass transition temperatures (Tg) (166–231°C) and high thermal decomposition temperatures (Td) (427–504°C). Solution-processable double-layered OLEDs fabricated with these materials as the light-emitting layer show stable blue emission and good performance. The nondoped electronic device fabricated using compound 5c exhibits a maximum brightness of 4754cd/m2 and maximum current efficiency of 2.0cd/A (power efficiency, 1.71lm/W) with Commission Internationale d’Eclairage (CIEx,y) color coordinates of (x=0.16, y=0.19) and the devices’ threshold voltage are only 3.4eV. Compound 5d shows an even higher efficiency of up to 4.90cd/A with CIEx,y color coordinates of (x=0.17, y=0.31) when doped with a blue fluorescent dopant, 4,4′-bis[4-(di-p-tolylamino)styryl]biphenyl (DPAVBi).

Abstract:Efficient non-doped deep blue organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) were fabricated by solution-processing method by using a series of small molecules consisting of various contents of triphenylamine and phosphonate-featured fluorene units as the emitting layer. Without any electron-injection layer, one of the optimal devices with a simple double-layer device configuration exhibits a maximal current efficiency of 2.59 cd A (1) at 6.8 V (1.72 mA cm (2)) with a CIE coordinates of (0.163, 0.097). These double-layer devices are demonstrated with excellent color-stability under a wide range of operating current density. The current work indicates that electron-rich triphenylamine moiety incorporated with phosphonate-featured fluorene units could be utilized as building blocks to construct a multi-functional platform combining good electron-injection property, carrier-transport property, and efficient electroluminescence. Abstract:Efficient and multifunctional deep-blue organic luminescent materials are in great demand for the development of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) in the application of ultrahigh-definition displays with a wide color gamut and highly saturated color. Herein, two deep-blue hybridized local and charge-transfer (HLCT) dibenzothiophene-phenanthroimidazole fluorophores were designed and synthesized by regulating the electron-withdrawing abilities of anchoring groups (phenyl and cyanophenyl) at the phenanthroimidazole unit. Computational and photophysical investigations reveal that the introduction of cyano-group can finely modulate the component of excited states while maintaining similar luminescence colors. Consequently, the resulting non-doped devices show the electroluminescence peaks of 451 and 452 nm with the Commission Internationale de l'Éclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.152, 0.067) and (0.153, 0.064). Based on HLCT-sensitized fluorescence and phosphorescence, high external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 7.08% and 27.30%, and low efficiency roll-off are achieved concurrently at the low doping concentrations. Moreover, a high-performance hybrid warm-white OLED with an EQE of 26.56% is obtained by the incomplete energy transfer process.

Abstract:Despite the significant progress in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), it is still challenging to produce blue OLEDs with sufficient color purity, stability, and efficiency for applications [1-3]. Hence, 9,9'-(4'-(4,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)-[1,1′-biphenyl]-2,6-diyl) bis(3,6-di-tert-butyl-9H-carbazole) (DtCz-TRZ) and 9,9'-(4'-(4,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)-[1,1′-biphenyl]-3,5-diyl) bis(3,6-di-tert-butyl-9H-carbazole) (mDtCz-TRZ) were designed and synthesized by introducing an additional benzene moiety to enlarge the distance of the donor and acceptor units. Thanks to the appropriate overlap of frontier molecular orbits (FMOs) and the extended molecular backbone that weakens the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) process, structural relaxation and spectral redshift can be hindered, and efficient deep blue emission can be realized. Deep blue TADF-OLEDs achieved a maximum external quantum efficiency of 9.37% with an emission peak at 455 nm under a Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.17, 0.18). To enhance the color purity, target compounds were employed as sensitizer and famous multiple resonances (MR)-TADF molecule v-DABNA as emitter, thermally activated sensitized fluorescence (TSF)-OLED based on mDtCz-TRZ shows EQEmax of 15.31% with electroluminescence (EL) spectrum peak at 473 nm, maximum luminance of close to 5000 cd m−2, FWHM of 20 nm, respectively. The two blue TADF materials have demonstrated superior performance in TADF- and TSF-OLEDs, validating their versatile applications.

Abstract:A new series of highly fluorescent blue-emitting materials based on fluorene and anthracene hybrids are designed and synthesized for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). These materials feature a phenyl-substituted fluorene dimer as a bulky and rigid core and anthracene as a functional active group. The novel use of a phenyl-substituted fluorene dimer as building skeleton to design functional molecules is reported for the first time. The thermal, photophysical, electrochemical, and electroluminescent (EL) properties are presented, as well as combined density functional study of their geometry and electronic structure. These compounds show excellent thermal resistance with high glass transition temperature (T(g)) in the range 159-257 degrees C, thermal decomposition temperature (T(d)) 441-495 degrees C, and high fluorescent quantum yield (Phi(F) = 0.61-0.96, relative to 9,10-diphenylanthracene) as well as good film-forming and morphological stability. Remarkably, high-performance blue OLEDs are also fabricated in a simple three-layer device architecture using these compounds as emissive layer with luminance efficiency of 2.2-5.1 cd A(-1) as a non-doped blue emitter and even higher efficiency of up to 13.6 cd A(-1) and maximum external quantum efficiency 4.8% is obtained when doped a blue fluorescent dye, 4,4'-1E, 1'E)-2,2'(biphenyl-4,4'diyl) bis(ethane-2,1-diyl) bis(N,N-dip-tolyaniline) (DPAVBi). Furthermore, we fabricate highly efficient fluorescent white OLEDs employing an interesting emission in the longer wavelength of one of our compound combined with DPAVBi emission to achieve stable white light emission in a binary blend single emissive layer with high efficiency of 14.8 cd A(-1) (5.3 lm W(-1)) and maximum brightness of 50248 cd m(-2).
Tunable Intramolecular Charge Transfer Effect on Diphenylpyrazine‐Based Linear Derivatives and Their Expected Performance in Blue Emitters

Abstract:High efficiency deep-blue emitters are one of the basic requests for an outstanding full-color organic light emitting diode (OLED) display. Herein, a linear D-A-D diphenylpyrazine structure is designed for maximizing the π-conjugation effect, whilst two deep-blue (DPP-DPhC and DPP-D3C) and one blue (DPP-DTPA) fluorophores are synthesized by incorporating the N-phenylcarbazole and triphenylamine donor units, respectively. As a result, they emit bright deep-blue to blue fluorescence with the luminescence quantum yields of 0.312–0.888 in solid state. Fortunately, all the non-doped and doped OLED devices show deep-blue (N-phenylcarbazole disubstituted compounds, DPP-DPhC and DPP-D3C) and blue (triphenylamine derivative, DPP-DTPA) electroluminescence (EL) performance with the maximum external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) of >4%. Comprehensively considering other parameters, the deep-blue non-doped OLED device based on DPP-DPhC exhibits the best EL performance with the maximum EQE of 5.73% with the Commission International de L'Eclairage (CIEx,y) coordinate of (0.151, 0.078) among them. These results demonstrate the feasibility of this strategy and provide a simple method to achieve high efficiency deep-blue emitters.

Abstract:A series of multibranched oligofluorenes with a phosphine oxide center were designed and synthesized through Suzuki cross-coupling reaction. Their thermal, photophysical, and electrochemical properties were investigated. The phosphine oxide linkage can disrupt the conjugation, and then allow the molecule system to extend to improve the solution processability and photoluminescent quantum yields without depreciating the deep blue emission. The noncoplanar molecular structures resulting from the phosphine oxide triangular pyramidal configuration can suppress the intermolecular interaction. All compounds display strong deep-blue emission both in solution and the solid state. Solution-processed devices based on these oligofluorenes exhibit highly efficient deep-blue electroluminescence, and the device performances are significantly enhanced with the extension of the oligofluorene branches. The double-layered device featuring PPO-TF3 as emitter shows a maximum current efficiency of 1.88 cd A(-1) and a maximum external quantum efficiency of 3.39% with Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.16, 0.09) that are very close to the National Television Standards Committee's blue standard.

Abstract:A series of starburst oligomers (T1-T3) that contained a fully diarylmethene-bridged triphenylamine core and oligofluorene arms were designed and synthesized through Suzuki cross-coupling reactions. Their thermal, photophysical, and electrochemical properties were also investigated. These materials showed high glass transition, in the range of 123-129 °C, and good film-forming abilities. They displayed deep-blue emission both in solution and as thin films. Solution-processed devices based on these oligomers exhibited highly efficient deep-blue electroluminescence and the device performances were significantly enhanced with the extension of the oligofluorene arms. The double-layered device that contained T3 as an emitter showed a maximum current efficiency of 3.83 cd A(-1) and a maximum external quantum efficiency of 4.19% with CIE coordinates of (0.16, 0.09), which are among the highest values for undoped deep-blue OLEDs that are based on solution-processable starburst oligomers.

Abstract:A trifluoromethyl-substituted 9,9'-bianthracene derivative named 10,10'-bis(3-trifluoromethylphenyl)-9,9'-bianthracene (BAn-(3)-CF3) has been designed and synthesized for organic light-emitting device (OLED). The compound is thermally stable with high decomposition temperature (T-d = 356 degrees C) and glass transition temperature (T-g = 266 degrees C). Non-doped deep blue OLED using BAn-(3)-CF3 as the emitter shows the Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.156, 0.142), which is indicative of excellent blue color purity. Furthermore, BAn-(3)-CF3 serves as an excellent host material doped for 4,4-bis[4-(di-p-tolylamino) styryl] biphenyl (DPAVBi) to get high-performance blue OLED with low turn-on voltage of 3.8 V, high luminance of over 12000 cd/m(2), high current efficiency of 5.88 cd/A and high external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 3.15%.

Abstract:Three new anthracene-based emitters, 4-(10-(9,9′-spirobi[fluoren]-2-yl)anthracen-9-yl)benzonitrile (SBF - AnCN), 4-(10-(9,9-diphenyl-9H-fluoren-2-yl)anthracen-9-yl)benzonitrile (DPF-AnCN) and 4-(10-(9,9-dimethyl-9H-fluoren-2-yl)anthracen-9-yl)benzonitrile (DMF-AnCN) are developed for deep blue organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Their photophysical properties, thermal properties, molecular configurations and device performances have been systematically investigated. As verified by crystallographic study, these anthracene derivatives possess highly twisted configuration, leading to deep-blue light emission by restraining π-conjugation extension. Furthermore, the difference in the molecular packing manner may influence the photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) in solid state and the proportion of singlet exciton harvested by triplet–triplet annihilation (TTA) process. A nondoped device fabricated using DPF-AnCN as emitter exhibits a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 7.1% with insignificant efficiency roll-off (6.6%@1000 nit) and Commission Internationale de L’Eclairage (CIE) index of (0.149, 0.104), approaching the standard blue index of the National Television System Committee (NTSC) of (0.14, 0.08). It is demonstrated that TTA is responsible for the excellent electroluminescence (EL) performance. In comparison with doped OLEDs, transient EL decay measurements demonstrate that TTA process is more efficient in the nondoped device. This work would provide an efficient method for designing deep-blue nondoped EL materials.
