Abstract:Building on previous work that provided analytical solutions to generalised matrix eigenvalue problems arising from numerical discretisations, this paper develops exact eigenvalues and eigenvectors for a broader class of $n$-dimensional matrices, focusing on non-symmetric and non-persymmetric matrices. These matrices arise in one-dimensional Laplacian eigenvalue problems with mixed boundary conditions and in a few quantum mechanics applications where standard Toeplitz-plus-Hankel matrix forms do not suffice. By extending analytical methodologies to these broader matrix categories, the study not only widens the scope of applicable matrices but also enhances computational methodologies, leading to potentially more accurate and efficient solutions in physics and engineering simulations.

Abstract:We consider the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of an axisymmetric matrix$A$ with some special structures. We propose S-Oja-Brockett equation $\frac{dX}{dt}=AXB-XBX^TSAX,$ where $X(t) \in {\mathbb R}^{n \times m}$ with $m \leq n$, $S$ is a positive definite symmetric solution of the Sylvester equation $A^TS = SA$ and $B$ is a real positive definite diagonal matrix whose diagonal elements are distinct each other, and show the S-Oja-Brockett equation has the global convergence to eigenvalues and its eigenvectors of $A$.

Abstract:In this paper we analyze and solve eigenvalue programs, which consist of the task of minimizing a function subject to constraints on the "eigenvalues" of the decision variable. Here, by making use of the FTvN systems framework introduced by Gowda, we interpret "eigenvalues" in a broad fashion going beyond the usual eigenvalues of matrices. This allows us to shed new light on classical problems such as inverse eigenvalue problems and also leads to new applications. In particular, after analyzing and developing a simple projected gradient algorithm for general eigenvalue programs, we show that eigenvalue programs can be used to express what we call vanishing quadratic constraints. A vanishing quadratic constraint requires that a given system of convex quadratic inequalities be satisfied and at least a certain number of those inequalities must be tight. As a particular case, this includes the problem of finding a point $x$ in the intersection of $m$ ellipsoids in such a way that $x$ is also in the boundary of at least $\ell$ of the ellipsoids, for some fixed $\ell > 0$. At the end, we also present some numerical experiments.

Abstract:Many fields of science and engineering require finding eigenvalues and eigenvectors of large matrices. The solutions can represent oscillatory modes of a bridge, a violin, the disposition of electrons around an atom or molecule, the acoustic modes of a concert hall, or hundreds of other physical quantities. Often only the few eigenpairs with the lowest or highest frequency (extremal solutions) are needed. Methods that have been developed over the past 60 years to solve such problems include the Lanczos algorithm, Jacobi–Davidson techniques, and the conjugate gradient method. Here, we present a way to solve the extremal eigenvalue/eigenvector problem, turning it into a nonlinear classical mechanical system with a modified Lagrangian constraint. The constraint induces exponential inflationary growth of the desired extremal solutions.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate a class of neural network described by differential equation and apply it to compute the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of an unsymmetrical real matrix. We give the analytic expression of solution and also discuss its asymptotic behavior. Finally we use the asymptotic property to give a method that could compute the eigenvalue with maximal real part and the corresponding eigenvector.

Abstract: A two dimensional eigenvalue problem (2DEVP) of a Hermitian matrix pair $(A, C)$ is introduced in this paper. The 2DEVP can be viewed as a linear algebraic formulation of the well-known eigenvalue optimization problem of the parameter matrix $H(\mu) = A - \mu C$. We present fundamental properties of the 2DEVP such as the existence, the necessary and sufficient condition for the finite number of 2D-eigenvalues and variational characterizations. We use eigenvalue optimization problems from the quadratic constrained quadratic program and the computation of distance to instability to show their connections with the 2DEVP and new insights of these problems derived from the properties of the 2DEVP.

Abstract:Let Ω be a bounded domain in an n-dimensional Euclidean space Rn. We study eigenvalues of an eigenvalue problem of a system of elliptic equations:{Δu+αgrad(divu)=−σu,in Ω,u|∂Ω=0. Estimates for eigenvalues of the above eigenvalue problem are obtained. Furthermore, we obtain an upper bound on the (k+1)th eigenvalue σk+1. We also obtain sharp lower bound for the first eigenvalue of two kinds of eigenvalue problems of the biharmonic operator on compact manifolds with boundary and positive Ricci curvature.

Abstract:To locate all $ Z$-eigenvalues of a tensor more precisely, we establish three $Z$-eigenvalue exclusion sets such that all $ Z$-eigenvalues do not belong to them and get three tighter $Z$-eigenvalue inclusion sets of tensor by using these $Z$-eigenvalue exclusion sets. Furthermore, we show that the new inclusion sets are tighter than the existing results via two running examples.

Abstract:Let $G = (V, E)$ be a graph. We define matrices $M(G; \alpha, \beta)$as $\alpha D + \beta A$, where $\alpha$, $\beta$ are real numbers such that $(\alpha, \beta) \neq (0, 0)$ and $D$ and $A$ are the diagonal matrix and adjacency matrix of $G$, respectively. Using the largest and smallest eigenvalues of $M(G; \alpha, \beta)$ with $\alpha \geq \beta > 0$, we present sufficient conditions for the Hamiltonian and traceable graphs.

Numerical Linear Algebra with Applications

Abstract:The eigenvalue bounds of interval matrices are often required in some mechanical and engineering fields. In this paper, we consider an interval eigenvalue problem with symmetric tridiagonal matrices. A theoretical result is obtained that under certain assumptions the upper and lower bounds of interval eigenvalues of the problem must be achieved just at some vertex matrices of the interval matrix. Then a sufficient condition is provided to guarantee the assumption to be satisfied. The conclusion is illustrated also by a numerical example. Copyright (C) 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:We revisit the class of column competent matrices and study some matrix theoretic properties of this class. The local $w$-uniqueness of the solutions to the linear complementarity problem can be identified by the column competent matrices. We establish some new results on $w$-uniqueness properties in connection with column competent matrices. These results are significant in the context of matrix theory as well as algorithms in operations research. We prove some results in connection with locally $w$-uniqueness property of column competent matrices. Finally we establish a connection between column competent matrices and column adequate matrices with the help of degree theory.

Abstract:A simple, direct, complete and explicit parametric solution of the generalized Sylvester matrix equation AV+BW = EVF is proposed for matrix F in the Jordan form with arbitrary eigenvalues using the Smith canonical form of the matrix [A - sE B]. The obtained solution is in a clear, neat form and may have important applications in descriptor linear system theory.

Abstract:A real square matrix with positive row sums and all its off-diagonal elements bounded below by the corresponding row means is called a $C$-matrix, which is introduced by Peña [Exclusion and inclusion intervals for the real eigenvalues of positive matrices, SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl., 26 (2005), pp. 908-917]. In this paper, a new class of nonsingular matrices—$MC$-matrices containing $C$-matrices—is first defined. By properties of a subclass of $MC$-matrices, we present new exclusion intervals of the real eigenvalues of a real matrix, which are further applied to localize the real eigenvalues different from 1 of a positive stochastic matrix. Secondly, an inclusion interval for the real parts of eigenvalues of a real matrix is established. Finally, for real matrices with nonnegative off-diagonal elements, lower and upper bounds of real eigenvalues are obtained. Furthermore, sufficient conditions are derived to indicate that the real inclusion intervals provided by Peña [On an alternative to Gerschgorin circles and ovals of Cassini, Numer. Math., 95 (2003), pp. 337-345] are subsets of those provided by the ovals of Cassini.

We study the eigenvalues of $q \times q$ matrices whose $(m,n)$ entry is $c_q (m-n)$ or $S(m,n;q)$ where $q$ is a fixed positive integer. We also study the eigenvalues of matrices whose entries are sums of Ramanujan sums or sums of Kloosterman sums.

Abstract:This paper introduces a novel neural-network-based approach for extracting some eigenpairs of real normal matrices of order n. Based on the proposed algorithm, the eigenvalues that have the largest and smallest modulus, real parts, or absolute values of imaginary parts can be extracted, respectively, as well as the corresponding eigenvectors. Although the ordinary differential equation on which our proposed algorithm is built is only n-dimensional, it can succeed to extract n-dimensional complex eigenvectors that are indeed 2n-dimensional real vectors. Moreover, we show that extracting eigen-pairs of general real matrices can be reduced to those of real normal matrices by employing the norm-reducing skill. Numerical experiments verified the computational capability of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:In this paper, a numerical solution to the problem of eigenstructure assignment for descriptor systems is investigated. To this end, we obtain numerical solutions of the generalized Sylvester matrix equation AV + BW = EV F using an iterative method. Based on the presented solution of this equation, an approach using a generalized inverse matrix for eigenstructure assignment in continuous descriptor system E(x) over dot = Ax + Bu via descriptor variable feedback u = Kx is proposed. Finally, some numerical results show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
