Abstract:Objective To understand the role of calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII-α) in the formation of senile plaques in patients suffering from Alzheimer disease (AD). Methods The paraffin sections of the hippocampuses of 10 female AD patients were stained with immunohistochemistry and double-labeling immunofluresence methods. Results The CaMKII-α deposited in the extraneurons and formed the plaques with different sizes. Most of the CaMKII-α plaques located in the senile plaques principally containing β-amyloid, only just those very small CaMKII-α plaques did not contain β-amyloid. In the classic plaques, the β-amyloid core were surrounded by the CaMKII-α deposits, whereas the CaMKII-α deposits were fully overlapped or mixed with β-amyloid in the diffuse plaques. There was no over-expression of CaMKII-α in the reactive astrocytes surrounded the senile plaques. Conclusion CaMKII-α may be close associated with the formation of the senile plaques in AD, and the astrocytes may be not attributable to the deposition of CaMKII-α.
