Abstract:A new bioinspired hierarchical nanofibrous silver-nanoparticle/anatase rutile-titania (Ag-NP/A R-titania) composite was fabricated by employing a natural cellulose substance (e.g., commercial laboratory cellulose filter paper) as the structural scaffold template, which was composed of anatase-phase titania (A-titania) nanotubes with rutile-phase titania (R-titania) nanoneedles grown on the surfaces and further silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) immobilized thereon. As it was employed as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), high reversible capacity, enhanced rate performance, and excellent cycling stability were achieved as compared with those of the corresponding cellulose-substance derived nanotubular A-titania, R-titania, heterogeneous anatase/rutile titania (A-R-titania) composite, and commercial P25 powder. This benefited from its unique porous cross-linked three-dimensional structure inherited from the initial cellulose substance scaffold, which enhances the sufficient electrode/electrolyte contact, relieves the severe volume change upon cycling, and improves the amount of lithium-ion storage; moreover, the high loading content of the silver component in the composite improves the electrical conductivity of the electrode. The structural integrity of the composite was maintained upon long-term charge/discharge cycling, indicating its significant stability.

Abstract:A series of nanostructured ternary Ag-nanoparticle/SnO2/carbon (Ag-NP/SnO2/carbon) composite materials with varied contents of silver were synthesized by employing natural cellulose substance (e.g., commercial laboratory filter paper) as both scaffold and carbon source. The nanofibrous SnO2/carbon composite material was first fabricated by a layer-by-layer assembly process followed by subsequent carbonization under argon atmosphere, and the Ag nanoparticles were loaded on the surface of the nanofiber via photocatalytic reduction reaction method by using silver nitrate as the precursor. The resultant composites were composed of carbon nanofibers coated with a thin layer of fine SnO2 nanocrystallites and further silver nanoparticles with the diameter of about 15–20 nm immobilized on the surfaces. When employed as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, the Ag-NP/SnO2/carbon composites showed enhanced electrochemical performances compared with the hybrid SnO2/carbon material and Ag nanoparticles decorated nanotubular SnO2 (Ag-NP/SnO2-NT). The good electrochemical performances of the Ag-NP/SnO2/carbon composites are attributed to the unique three-dimensional buffering network structures of the carbon fiber scaffold, the enhanced electric conductivity derived from the presence of Ag nanoparticles, as well as the synergistic effect of SnO2 and carbon. Meanwhile, it was noticed that the electrochemical performances of the anode materials got better with the increase of the silver content in the composites. For the eletrochemical examinations, the Ag-NP/SnO2/carbon composite with the highest Ag content of 24.5 wt% showed a superior performance with a stable specific capacity of 690 mAh g−1 after 120 charge/discharge cycles at a current density of 100 mA g−1.

Abstract:A hierarchical nanofibrous titania/silicon composite composed of anatase titania nanoparticles anchored as a thin coating layer on the surface of a silicon nanofiber was synthesized by employing natural cellulose substance (e.g., commercial laboratory filter paper) as a template. It was obtained through magnesiothermic reduction of the titania/silica replica of a cellulose substance prepared by a sol-gel process. When used as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries, it showed improved electrochemical performances that were superior to those of the bare silicon counterpart, and which improved with increasing titania content in the composites. For the composite with 54.3wt% titania and titania nanoparticles with sizes of about 12nm, it delivered a specific capacity of 498.9mAhg(-1) after 200 charge/discharge cycles at a current density of 200mAg(-1). The enhanced electrochemical performances of the composite are attributed to its unique network structure, as well as the buffering effect of the titania coating layer for huge volume changes to the silicon fiber during repeated lithiation and delithiation processes.
Facile Fabrication of Binder-free Metallic Tin Nanoparticle/Carbon Nanofiber Hybrid Electrodes for Lithium-ion Batteries

Abstract:In this work, a Sn nanoparticle (NP)/carbon nanofiber (CNF) hybrid with unique structure has been designed and fabricated via electrospinning and subsequent heat treatment. The cell assembled by the binder-free Sn NP/CNF hybrid demonstrates an effective capacity (46mAhg−1 at 200mAg−1 after 200 cycles) with high coulombic efficiency (up to 99.8%), suggesting a facile strategy for the scalable fabrication of electrochemically stable electrodes for LIBs. For understanding the electrochemical behaviors of the metallic Sn and carbon nanofibers in the lithiation/delithiation process, in situ transmission electron microscopy was applied to study the single hybrid structure. In the first charge/discharge process, real-time size variation of the Sn NP and CNFs was mainly focused, suggesting a two-step lithiation process in the metallic Sn NP. Structural characterization also indicates an irreversible delithiation in a single Sn NP/CNF hybrid structure. The electrochemical performance based on influence of carbonization temperature has also been discussed. The results and fundamental understanding of the lithiation/delithiation in the Sn-based hybrid anodes enables the communities to design flexible high-performance electrodes based on metallic active materials in a rational way.

Abstract:Vanadium-sulfide-based materials, known for their structural diversity, multielectron redox capability, and cost-effectiveness, have emerged as prospective anodic materials for advanced lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the drawbacks of poor structural stability and significant kinetic sluggishness greatly hinder their practical implementation. Here, a three-dimensional network heterostructured nickel-sulfide/vanadium-sulfide/carbon composite was successfully fabricated, which was formed by irregular NiS2/VS4 nanoparticles tightly anchored to the cellulose-derived carbon fibers (CFs). Simultaneously, the nanofibrous NiS2/VS4/CF composite effectively suppressed the aggregation of the bimetallic sulfide nanoparticles during the lithiation and delithiation process when applied as an anodic material for LIBs, significantly mitigated volume expansion during cycling, and remarkably enhanced electronic/ionic transport across the entire electrodes. The NiS2/VS4/CF composite delivered a high discharge capacity of 938.6 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 A g(-1) and a fast-rate capability of 642.3 mAh g(-1) at 2 A g(-1). Kinetic analysis demonstrated that the three-dimensional network heterostructure of the composite contributed to the formation of a stable solid electrolyte interphase and a charge transfer interface, facilitating electron transfer and ion transport, underscoring the essential role of structural adjustment to achieve an effective lithium storage property. This work presents a facile and cost-effective pathway to synthesize cellulose substance-derived nanocomposite materials for energy applications.

Abstract:A graphene-wrapped silver-porous silicon composite has been prepared and used as the anode material in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Porous silicon (pSi) prepared through a magnesiothermic reduction of mesoporous silica MCM-41 was surface-modified by Ag nanoparticles formed via the thermal decomposition of AgNO3 and then graphene nanosheets (GNS) generated through the thermal reduction of graphene oxide. The obtained Ag-pSi/GNS composite exhibits a distinctly high reversible specific capacity, long cycling performance and super rate capability. An initial capacity as high as 3531 mA h g(-1) is delivered at 0.1 A g(-1), whereas at a current density of 32 A g(-1), a specific capacity of 1241 mA h g(-1), more than three times higher than the theoretical capacity of the graphite anode, is still retained for 50 cycles. The superior electrochemical performance demonstrates that this Ag-pSi/GNS composite is a promising electrode material for high-performance LIBs.

Abstract:In this study, a novel carbon-coated Fe2O3/helical carbon nanofibers (C@Fe2O3/HCNFs) composite with 3D sandwich-like structure was first successfully synthesized through a facile two-step method and utilized as anode materials of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). A carbon layer with a thickness of about 3-5 nm was uniformly coated on the surface of the C@Fe2O3/HCNFs composites, and Fe2O3 nanoparticles with a particle size of about 5-20 nm was distributed between the carbon layer and HCNFs matrix. The C@Fe2O3/HCNFs anode shows excellent long-term cycle life and stability, and the discharge performance can reach 1298.6 mAh/g after 100 cycles at 200 mA/g, which is 59 % higher than that of Fe2O3/HCNFs anode. The electrochemical perfor-mance and stable structure of C@Fe2O3/HCNFs composites are improved due to the interaction between the carbon coating layers, HCNFs, and Fe2O3 nanoparticles during the charge-discharge process. The present study reveals the potential application of C@Fe2O3/HCNFs as a novel anode material for LIBs.

Abstract:A bio-inspired sandwich-structured carbon/silicon/titanium-oxide nanofibers composite is fabricated based on the self-assembly technique by using cellulose substance as both the carbon source and the structural scaffold. It holds the hierarchical structure of the initial cellulose substance. And it is composed of thin silicon layer sandwiched between the carbon nanofiber and the outer titanium oxide coating layer consisting of anatase titania nanoparticles with oxygen defects. Owing to the synergetic effect of the porous carbon nanofiber and titanium oxide coating layer, as well as its unique three-dimensional network structure, this nanocomposite shows enhanced lithium storage properties. For the composite with 24.1 wt% of titanium oxide, it delivers a stable reversible capacity of ca. 792.6 mAh g(-1) at a current density of 100 mA g(-1) after 160 discharge/charge cycles, which superiors to the nanofibrous silicon and carbon/silicon matters as well as the carbon/silicon/titanium-oxide composites with low titanium oxide content therein. Abstract:Transition metal oxides utilized as electrode materials that applied in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have been attracting considerable attentions due to their good electro-activities and high theoretical specific capacities, while the serious drawbacks are the poor cycling stability and irreversible capacity degradation upon cycling of the electrodes. In this work, a bio-inspired nanotubular TiO2/Fe2O3 composite was fabricated by using a natural cellulose substance (laboratory filter paper) as the structural scaffold, which was obtained by growth of FeOOH nanocrystals on the surfaces of the TiO2 nanotubes that templated by the cellulose nanofibers and successive calcination treatment. The composite possess a relatively high specific surface area, and it is composed of porous Fe2O3 nanoparticles that uniformly immobilized on the titania nanotubes surfaces. As applied to be an anode material for LIBs, it delivered the initial discharge and charge capacities of 948 and 686 mAh g(-1), respectively; and it exhibited a cycling capacity of 571 mAh g(-1) after 150 cycles at a current rate of 100 mA g(-1) as well as good rate performances. The enhanced electrochemical properties of the composite are due to the three-dimensional network structure of it, which effectively prevents the pulverization and aggregation of the immobilized Fe(2)O(3 )nanoparticles during the lithiation/delithiation processes. Moreover, the nanostructured porous Fe2O3 nanoparticles provide more active sites and facilitate the charge transfer during the charge/discharge processes. Due to the synergistic effect of the Fe2O3 nanoparticles and the TiO2 nanotubes, the nanocomposite showed good cycling stability as well as excellent rate capability. Free-standing and Bendable Carbon Nanotubes/tio2 Nanofibres Composite Electrodes for Flexible Lithium Ion Batteries

Abstract:Carbon nanotube (CNT) and TiO2 nanofibre composite films are prepared and used as anode materials for lithium ion batteries (LIBs) without the use of binders and conventional copper current collector. The preliminary experimental results from X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy suggest that the TiO2 nanofibres were well-dispersed and interwoven by the CNTs, forming freestanding, bendable and light weighted composite. In comparison with TiO2 nanofibre based LIBs, the CNTs could significantly improve the battery performance due to their high conductivity property and 3D network morphology. In both 1–3V and 0.01–3V testing voltage ranges, the as-prepared composites show excellent reversible capacity and capacity retention. The superior lithium storage capacity of the CNT/TiO2 composite was mainly attributed to dual functions of the CNTs – the CNTs not only provide conductive networks to assist the electron transfer but also facilitate lithium ion diffusion between the electrolyte and the TiO2 active materials by preventing agglomeration of TiO2 nanofibres. This work demonstrates that the CNT–TiO2 composite film could be one type of potential electrode material for large-scale LIB applications.

Abstract:A bio-inspired nanofibrous Co3O4/TiO2/carbon composite was fabricated using natural cellulose substrate (laboratory filter paper) as both the carbon source and the structural scaffold. Employing a surface sol -gel process to form a thin TiO2 gel layer coating on each cellulose nanofiber of the filter paper, the resulted composite sheet was successively carbonized in inert atmosphere to give a nanofibrous TiO2/carbon composite; afterwards, nano-sized Co3O4 particles (10-30 nm) were uniformly deposited onto the yielded composite fibers via a simple hydrothermal method, resulting in the Co3O4/TiO2/carbon hybrid. The ternary composite possessed a unique hierarchically three-dimensional porous structure which inherited precisely from the initial filter paper. This special structure with the internal conductive carbon fiber and the external nano-sized Co3O4 particles offered the nanocomposite with an excellent electrochemical performance as anodic material for lithium-ion batteries. The optimal sample with a Co3O4 mass content of 50.6% delivered an initial discharge capacity of 1239 mAh g(-1) at a current density of 100 mA g(-1), which was far exceeded the theoretical capacity of Co3O4. The extra capacity is ascribed to the additional lithium storage sites provided by the large specific surface area of the composite, and the formation of the solid electrolyte interface (SEI) layer in the initial discharge process causing a large consumption of Li+ which results in some irreversible capacity. And after 200 discharge/charge cycles, a high reversible capacity of 764 mAh g(-1) was maintained, which is higher than most of the Co3O4/carbon hybrid materials reported. This work provided a simple and efficient strategy for designing and preparing nanoscale metal-oxide/carbon composite material with considerable potential in energy storage and conversion. Nano-sized Tin Oxide-Modified Graphite Composite as Efficient Anode Material for Lithium Ion Batteries

Abstract:Nano-sized tin based compounds dispersed graphite composites, synthesized by the electroless plating process and pyrolysis method, act as efficient anode materials for lithium ion batteries (LIBs). The nano-sized tin complexes on the graphite surface can be obtained through a simple chemical reaction between Sn(BF4)2 and Na2S2O4 in aqueous solution and completely converted to SnO2 after pyrolysis. The synthesized tin-modified graphite composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The electrochemical performance of the composites for application as anode materials in lithium-ion batteries was investigated. The average particle size of nano-SnO2 is ~14.7 nm, as determined by HRTEM. Results of infrared spectra and electrochemical properties indicate that such an optimized nano Sn-based compound on graphite influences the formation of the thin solid electrolyte interface (SEI) in the electrode and thus improves the cycling performance, with high efficiency of 97.3% in LIBs. Nyquist plots show that during Li+ intercalation, the thin SEI film and the low charge transfer resistance of SnO2-modified graphite composite anode plays important roles in improving the electrochemical properties of LIBs.

Abstract:A bioinspired hierarchical nanofibrous Fe3O4-TiO2-carbon composite was fabricated by employing natural cellulose substance (e.g., filter paper) as both the scaffold and the carbon source and showed improved electrochemical performances when it is employed as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries. FeOOH nanoparticles were first grown uniformly onto the surface of the titania thin-layer precoated cellulose nanofibers, and thereafter, the as-prepared FeOOH-TiO2-cellulose composite was calcined and carbonized in argon atmosphere at 500 °C for 6 h to produce the Fe3O4-TiO2-carbon composite. The resultant composite possesses a hierarchical structure that was faithfully inherited from the initial cellulose substance, which was composed of titania-coated carbon fibers with corncob-like shaped Fe3O4 nanoparticles immobilized on the surfaces. The diameter of the composite nanofiber is ca. 100-200 nm, and the diameter of the Fe3O4 nanoparticle is about 30 nm, which is coated with an ultrathin carbon layer with a thickness about 3 nm. This composite displayed superior lithium-ion storage performance. It showed a first-cycle discharge capacity of 1340 mAh/g, delivering a stable reversible capacity of ca. 525 mAh/g after 100 charge-discharge cycles at a current density of 100 mA/g, and the efficiency is as high as ca. 95% of the theoretical value. This is much higher than those of the commercial Fe3O4 powder (160 mAh/g) and the Fe3O4-carbon counter material (310 mAh/g). It was demonstrated that the thin titania precoating layer (thickness ca. 3-5 nm) is necessary for the high content loading of the Fe3O4 nanoparticles onto the carbon nanofibers. Owing to the unique three-dimensional porous network structure of the carbon-fiber scaffold, together with the ultrathin outer carbon-coating layer, the composite showed significantly improved cycling stability and rate capability.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) can be converted into carbon materials for the fabrication of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) as well as serve as a substrate for the incorporation of transition metal oxides (TMOs) to restrain the volume expansion, one of the most significant challenges of TMO-based LIBs. To improve the electrochemical performance and enhance the longer cycling stability of LIBs, a nanocrystalline cellulose-supported iron oxide (Fe2O3) composite (denoted as NCC–Fe2O3) is synthesized and utilized as electrodes in LIBs. The obtained NCC–Fe2O3 electrode exhibited stable cycling performance, better capacity, and high-rate capacity, and delivered a specific discharge capacity of 576.70 mAh g−1 at 100 mA g−1 after 1000 cycles. Moreover, the NCC–Fe2O3 electrode was restored and showed an upward trend of capacity after working at high current densities, indicating the fabricated composite is a promising approach to designing next-generation high-energy density lithium-ion batteries.

The nanocomposite with 16wt% tin content was composed of fine metallic tin nanocrystallites with sizes of 20-50nm that were uniformly immobilized on the surface of the cellulose-derived carbon nanofibers. When employed as an anodic material for lithium-ion batteries, because of its unique three-dimensionally hierarchical porous structures and the buffering effect of the carbon matrix, it showed a stable discharge capacity of ca. 430mAhg(-1) after 200charge/discharge cycles at a current density of 100mAg(-1), which was close to the calculated theoretical capacity of the electrode. In addition, its structural stability upon extensive charge/discharge cycling processes is outstanding.
Novel Fe 3 O 4 -CNTs nanocomposite for Li-ion batteries with enhanced electrochemical performance

Abstract:As the promising anode material for Li-ion batteries (LIBs), transition metal oxides possess much higher theoretical lithium storage capacities than the commercially used graphite. However, the large volume variation during the lithium insertion/desertion processes and the relatively low electrical conductivity of transition metal oxides usually lead to poor battery performance, impeding their extensive use for LIBs. Here, we report the synthesis of a new type of nanocomposite consisting of Fe3O4 nanocrystals (NCs) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs), which can be used as high-performance LIB anode materials. The nanocomposite is formed by hydrolysis of iron precursors in the presence of poly(acrylic acid)-functionalized CNTs (PAA-CNTs), resulting into Fe3O4 NCs which are firmly and uniformly attached to the CNT surface. When the as-formed nanocomposite is coated with a carbon layer by pyrolysis of the low-cost petroleum pitch, the nanocomposite electrodes exhibit significantly enhanced lithium storage capacities and cyclability. In particular, a reversible lithium storage capacity of 850 mAh g−1 is retained after 100 charge/discharge cycles at a current rate of 0.1C. In comparison, considerably poor battery performance is observed when the CNT- or carbon-free counterpart is used as the LIB anode.
Natural Cellulose Derived Nanocomposites as Anodic Materials for Lithium‐Ion Batteries

Abstract:Bio-inspired synthetic method provides an effective shortcut to fabricate functional nanostructured materials with specific morphologies and designed functionalities. Natural cellulose substances (e. g., commercial laboratory cellulose filter paper) possesses unique three-dimensionally cross-linked porous structures and abundant functional groups for the functional modification on the surfaces. The deposition of metal oxide gel film on the surfaces of the cellulose nanofibers is facilely to be achieved through the surface sol-gel process, resulting in metal oxide replicas of the initial cellulose substance or metal-oxide/carbon nanocomposites. Moreover, the as-deposited metal oxide gel films coated on the cellulose fiber surfaces provide ideal platforms for the further formation of specific functional assemblies, and eventually to the corresponding nanocomposite materials. Based on this methodology, various nanostructured composites were prepared and employed as anodic materials for lithium-ion batteries, including metal-oxides-based (such as SnO2, TiO2, MoO3, FexOy, and SiO2) and Si-based composites, as summarized in this personal account. Benefiting from the unique hierarchically porous network structures and the synergistic effects among the composite components of the anodic materials, the transfer of electrons/ions is accelerated and the structural stability of the electrode is enhanced, leading to the improved lithium storage performances and promoted cycling stability.
Simple fabrication of a Fe2O3/carbon composite for use in a high-performance lithium ion battery

Abstract:A simple approach was developed for the fabrication of a Fe2O3/carbon composite by impregnating activated carbon with a ferric nitrate solution and calcinating it. The composite contains graphitic layers and 10wt.% Fe2O3 particles of 20–50nm in diameter. The composite has a high specific surface area of ∼828m2g−1 and when used as the anode in a lithium ion battery (LIB), it showed a reversible capacity of 623mAhg−1 for the first 100 cycles at 50mAg−1. A discharge capacity higher than 450mAhg−1 at 1000mAg−1 was recorded in rate performance testing. This highly improved reversible capacity and rate performance is attributed to the combination of (i) the formation of graphitic layers in the composite, which possibly improves the matrix electrical conductivity, (ii) the interconnected porous channels whose diameters ranges from the macro- to meso- pore, which increases lithium-ion mobility, and (iii) the Fe2O3 nanoparticles that facilitate the transport of electrons and shorten the distance for Li+ diffusion. This study provides a cost-effective, highly efficient means to fabricate materials which combine conducting carbon with nanoparticles of metal or metal oxide for the development of a high-performance LIB.
