Abstract:China's urban economy has experienced rapid development, but resource and environmental constraints have become increasingly severe. This paper aims to fill this knowledge gap by measuring the GTFP of China's cities, exploring its sources of change, and grasping its temporal-spatial evolution. Firstly, the meta-frontier DDF model is innovatively constructed to measure the GTFP from the perspective of regional heterogeneity. Then, a new framework for decomposing GTFP is proposed, which is applied to assess the changes in GTFP in Chinese cities and analysis the underlying sources of these changes. On this basis, the temporal-spatial evolution of the GTFP index and its spatial effects are further explored using the Dagum Gini coefficient and Markov chains. The research findings are as follows: (1) The GTFP of Chinese cities has steadily improved but exhibits a distribution pattern of "higher in the south and lower in the north, higher in the east and lower in the west." (2) There is significant technological heterogeneity among the three major regions in China. Green innovative technology is the main factor that promotes the improvement of urban GTFP. (3) The spatial differentiation of GTFP in Chinese cities is evident but shows a downward trend and a reversed "N" shape change. (4) There is stability among different levels of GTFP in Chinese cities, with apparent convergence at both low and high levels. These findings provide a practical decision-making reference for realizing high-quality urban economic development.
