Abstract:For concrete beams strengthened using fiber reinforced plastics (FRP) sheets, debonding is an important mechanism that limits the load capacity of the member. In many cases, debonding initiates at the bottom of a flexural or shear-flexural crack in the concrete beam. This kind of debonding failure is often studied with the direct shear test. However, experimental results indicate that the FRP on the reinforced concrete beam can carry a significantly higher force without debonding. This observation can be ascribed to the presence of multiple cracks along the span of the beam. In this paper, a debonding model that accounts for the opening of flexural cracks along the debonded zone is developed for predicting the maximum FRP strain at final failure. From a beam test which simulates the case with only a single crack, interfacial parameters are first determined. With these parameters at input, the maximum force that can be carried by the FRP is computed for various cases when there are multiple cracks along the beam span. The computed values are compared to test results on reinforced concrete members. Good agreement between theoretical and experimental results is obtained.
