Abstract:Architected hydrogels are widely used in biomedicine, soft robots, and flexible electronics while still possess big challenges in strong toughness, and shape modeling. Here, inspired with the universal hydrogen bonding interactions in biological systems, a strain-induced microphase separation path toward achieving the printable, tough supramolecular polymer hydrogels by hydrogen bond engineering is developed. Specifically, it subtly designs and fabricates the poly (N-acryloylsemicarbazide-co-acrylic acid) hydrogels with high hydrogen bond energy by phase conversion induced hydrogen bond reconstruction. The resultant hydrogels exhibited the unique strain-induced microphase separation behavior, resulting in the excellent strong toughness with, for example, an ultimate stress of 9.1 +/- 0.3 MPa, strain levels of 1020 +/- 126%, toughness of 33.7 +/- 6.6 MJ m(-3), and fracture energy of 171.1 +/- 34.3 kJ m(-2). More importantly, the hydrogen bond engineered supramolecular hydrogels possess dynamic shape memory character, i.e shape fixing at low temperature while recovery after heating. As the proof of concept, the tailored hydrogel stents are readily manufactured by 3D printing, which showed good biocompatibility, load-bearing and drug elution, being beneficial for the biomedical applications. It is believed that the present 3D printing of the architected dynamic hydrogels with ultrahigh toughness can broaden their applications.

Abstract:Load-bearing biological tissues, such as cartilage and muscles, exhibit several crucial properties, including high elasticity, strength, and recoverability. These characteristics enable these tissues to endure significant mechanical stresses and swiftly recover after deformation, contributing to their exceptional durability and functionality. In contrast, while hydrogels are highly biocompatible and hold promise as synthetic biomaterials, their inherent network structure often limits their ability to simultaneously possess a diverse range of superior mechanical properties. As a result, the applications of hydrogels are significantly constrained. This article delves into the design mechanisms and mechanical properties of various tough hydrogels and investigates their applications in tissue engineering, flexible electronics, and other fields. The objective is to provide insights into the fabrication and application of hydrogels with combined high strength, stretchability, toughness, and fast recovery as well as their future development directions and challenges.

Through connecting hydrogel network structures, toughening mechanisms and chemical structures with macroscopic mechanical properties, we mainly discussed the research progress of single network hydrogel, double network hydrogel, nanocomposite hydrogel and so on. The summary and outlook of the new ideas and directions of stretchable and tough hydrogels were also demonstrated at last.

Abstract:The high mechanical strength and self-healing properties of hydrogels are the focus of tissue engineering and bio-medical research. Furthermore, the incompatibility between hydrogel toughness and self-healing has not been resolved. It is noteworthy that the double network (DN) hydrogels show great promise as a viable method for producing self-healing hydrogels with the above properties. The Xylan/PVA/Borax DN hydrogel was prepared by the one-pot method, shows various excellent performances, including strong strength (ca. 81 kPa), high toughness (ca.1652.42 kJ/m(3)), good self-recovery (ca. 79% recovery), and excellent self-healing properties (self-healing efficiency reached to 85.8% for 30 s). Abstract:The poor mechanical properties remain the largest barrier to traditional synthetic hydrogels for extensive practical applications, such as tissue scaffolds. In this work, we have synthesized the hydrogel films in the presence of microgel precursors of various chemical species with different charges. The hydrogels fabricated have a novel two-phase composite structure, where the continuous phase is a loosely cross-linked polyacrylamide (PAAm) matrix and the disperse phase is virtually double-network (DN) microgels. Named as microgel-reinforced (MR) hydrogels, they exhibited dramatic enhancement in mechanical strength and toughness, in comparison to the hydrogels with no microgels. MR hydrogels showed the comparable mechanical properties with the conventional bicontinuous DN hydrogels. By visualizing the embedded microgels before, during, and after the elongation, mesoscale fractures of the microgels phase were confirmed, which should effectively blunt the crack and enhance the fracture propagation resistance. Therefore, we conclude that the essential reinforcement principle of MR gels roots in the sacrificial bonds effect contributed by the microgels. This work provides a novel universal pathway to synthesize hydrogel thin films with high strength and toughness from various microgels and may open a new avenue for the application of hydrogels in various fields, such as fast responsive actuators, fuel cell films, wound dressings, etc.

Abstract:Muscles and some tough hydrogels can maintain perfect mechanical properties after millions of loading cycles owing to the anisotropic microstructures inside them. However, applications of intrinsic anisotropic microstructures in biological tissues and tough hydrogels are limited by the poor mechanical performance in the perpendicular direction relative to the alignment direction. Here, a universal strategy is proposed for developing hydrogels with unprecedented isotropic crack propagation resistance only depending on the interpenetrating entanglements of polymer chains (polyacrylamide (PAAM) or poly-(1-acrylanmido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid) (PAMPS)) in deformable polymeric microspheres (PAMPS or PAAM). The deformable interpenetrating network in microspheres can transform the hydrogel from isotropic to anisotropic instantaneously in any load direction, and effectively alleviate the stress concentration at the crack tip, dissipate energy, and eliminate notch sensitivity. The best isotropic hydrogel displays an ultimate strain of 5300%, toughness of 18.9 MJ m(-3), fracture energy of 157 kJ m(-2), and fatigue threshold of 4.2 kJ m(-2). Furthermore, the mechanical strength of hydrogels can be simply tuned by solvent replacement. The strategy presented here can be expanded to prepare other isotropic hydrogels with super tear-resistant and anti-fatigue properties, based on a wide variety of deformable microspheres and matrix polymers.

Abstract:Strong, tough and tear-resistant hydrogels hold great promise for applications as load-bearing structural biomaterials such as cartilages, tendons and ligaments. Here, we design a macromolecule-cross-linked (MC) hydrogel by in situ polymerization of acrylamide (AM) with the presence of allyl functionalized chitosan (CS). The resulting MC hydrogel bears abundant dangling chains, which can form a large amount of instantaneous physical entanglements. The physical entanglements can easily disentangle upon deformation, leading to energy dissipation. Meanwhile, the macromolecular cross-linking points can adjust their conformation, generating a topologically reconfigurable network, which can distribute stress evenly throughout the material. As a result, the hydrogel shows outstanding stretchability, mechanical strength, toughness and tear-resistance. Such a facile strategy to prepare hydrogels with both physical entanglements and a topologically reconfigurable network is quite general and should enable the development of strong and tough hydrogels of practical usage.

Abstract:Synthetic polymeric hydrogel is a potential substitute for soft biological tissues. However, the poor mechanical properties of traditional synthetic hydrogels limit their applications in biological fields. Herein, a series of tough physical hydrogels have been prepared by micellar polymerization, in the existence of sodium bromide (NaBr), using methacrylic acid (MA) and stearyl acrylate (SA) as monomers, cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) as cationic surfactant. The hydrogels exhibit excellent mechanical properties: modulus, toughness, and tearing fracture energy up to 7.8 MPa, 34 MJ m −3 , and 16,600 J m −2 , respectively. Moreover, it was found that the toughness of the hydrogels can be modulated in a very wide range by different post-treatments, e.g., dried/reswelling, freezing/thawing, or heated treatments. After post-treatments, the elastic physical hydrogels even turn into brittle plastics: modulus and toughness vary by 3 and 4 orders of magnitude, respectively. The mechanism for this wide tunability is attributed to the change of electrostatic attraction, crystallization, and phase separation during post-treatments.

Abstract:Soft materials are widely used in tissue engineering, soft robots, wearable electronics, etc. However, it remains a challenge to fabricate soft materials, such as hydrogels, with both high strength and toughness that are comparable to biological tissues. Inspired by the anisotropic structure of biological tissues, a novel solvent–exchange-assisted wet-stretching strategy is proposed to prepare anisotropic polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogels by tuning the macromolecular chain movement and optimizing the polymer network. The reinforcing and toughening mechanisms are found to be "macromolecule crystallization and nanofibril formation". These hydrogels exhibit excellent mechanical properties, such as extremely high fracture stress (12.8 ± 0.7 MPa) and fracture strain (1719 ± 77%), excellent modulus (4.51 ± 0.76 MPa), high work of fracture (134.47 ± 9.29 MJ m −3 ), and fracture toughness (305.04 kJ m −2 ) compared with other strong hydrogels and even natural tendons. In addition, excellent conductivity, strain sensing capability, water retention, freezing resistance, swelling resistance, and biocompatibility can also be achieved. This work provides a new and effective method to fabricate multifunctional anisotropic hydrogels with high tunable strength and toughness with potential applications in the fields of regenerative medicine, flexible sensors, and soft robotics.

Abstract:Many high-strength hydrogels have been developed in recent years; however, few of them are both tough and resilient, and their intrinsic paradoxical nature makes designing a gel with both high toughness and high resilience a great challenge. To address this problem, we introduced both N,N,N,N-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PA) and N,N-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) into polyacrylamide hydrogel networks to construct an entangled network that contains chemically cross-linked chains and branched chains simultaneously. The entanglements of branched chains can act as a physical cross-linking point to uniformly disperse stress on molecular chains, and chemical cross-linking ensures the stability of the hydrogel network. The increase in the number and length of branched chains is able to achieve an enhancement in strength while the slip of the entangled polymer chains can effectively achieve energy dissipation and can improve the toughness of the gel. Moreover, the resultant hydrogels exhibit an excellent resilience (>98%). Therefore, high toughness and resilience are achieved simultaneously. In addition, we also investigated the initiation mechanism of PA. This strategy creates a new way for the preparation of next-generation high toughness and high resilience hydrogel-based materials, which have promising applications in wearable, flexible strain/pressure sensors.

Ultrastiff and Tough Supramolecular Hydrogels with a Dense and Robust Hydrogen Bond Network

Abstract:Design of tough hydrogels has made great progress in the past two decades. However, the synthetic tough gels are usually much softer than some biotissues (e.g., skins with modulus up to 100 MPa). Here we report a new class of ultrastiff and tough supramolecular hydrogels facilely prepared by copolymerization of methacrylic acid and methacrylamide. The gels with water content of approximately 50-70 wt % possessed remarkable mechanical properties, with Young's modulus of 2.3-217.3 MPa, tensile breaking stress of 1.2-8.3 MPa, breaking strain of 200-620%, and tearing fracture energy of 2.9-23.5 kJ/m(2), superior to most existing hydrogels, especially in terms of modulus. Typical yielding and crazing were observed in the gel under tensile loading, indicating the forced elastic deformation of these hydrogels in a glassy state, as confirmed by dynamic mechanical analysis. The ultrahigh stiffness was attributed to the dense cross-linking and reduced segmental mobility caused by the robust intra- and interchain hydrogen bonds. Because of the dynamic nature of noncovalent bonds, these supramolecular gels also showed rate dependent mechanical performances along with good shape memory and recyclability. This strategy should be applicable for other systems toward robust mechanical properties, versatile functionalities, and promising applications of hydrogel materials as structural elements.

Abstract:<p>Creating both strong and tough hydrogel materials have been a challenging task, due to their nature of generally mutual exclusion. Interestingly, natural materials such as bone and shells usually offer an unprecedented combination of strength and toughness, which would provide inspiration for novel materials. Here, we mimic the design of natural cartilage with collagen fibers incorporated into extracellular matrix, and prepare fabric reinforced composite hydrogels. The poly (vinyl alcohol) hydrogel composite exhibit significant improvement in the mechanical properties, compared to cotton scaffold or neat PVA gel. Under deformation, the fibers in the hydrogel network are pulled out and break up gradually to dissipate energy, providing significant stiffness and toughness for the gel composite. This work opens up a novel and simple method to construct tough materials and displays potential application in joint‐replacement.</p><p>This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Hydrogels attract great attention as biomaterials as a result of their soft and wet nature, similar to that of biological tissues. Recent inventions of several tough hydrogels show their potential as structural biomaterials, such as cartilage. Any given application, however, requires a combination of mechanical properties including stiffness, strength, toughness, damping, fatigue resistance and self-healing, along with biocompatibility. This combination is rarely realized. Here, we report that polyampholytes, polymers bearing randomly dispersed cationic and anionic repeat groups, form tough and viscoelastic hydrogels with multiple mechanical properties. The randomness makes ionic bonds of a wide distribution of strength. The strong bonds serve as permanent crosslinks, imparting elasticity, whereas the weak bonds reversibly break and re-form, dissipating energy. These physical hydrogels of supramolecular structure can be tuned to change multiple mechanical properties over wide ranges by using diverse ionic combinations. This polyampholyte approach is synthetically simple and dramatically increases the choice of tough hydrogels for applications.

Abstract:This paper introduces a super strong and tough hydrogel constructed through a rotating ice template method, significantly enhancing the mechanical properties of hydrogels via a technique called Macromolecular Network Uniformization (MNU). The paper concludes that these hydrogels, characterized by orderly and uniform macromolecular structures, have broad application prospects in various fields. The characteristic of materials with special strength and toughness is distinguished by the uniform arrangement of their multi‐level structures, which is a key factor that significantly affects their mechanical behavior and overall performance. This work explores the challenges and potential solutions to enhance the mechanical properties of hydrogels through the construction of multi‐scale, multi‐layered ordered uniform structures. A novel approach termed macromolecular network uniformization (MNU) that utilizes rotation ice templates to freeze‐cast uniform polymer networks in hydrogels is proposed. By integrating this process with salt‐out densification, hydrogels with exceptional toughness exceeding 350 MJ m−3 in both x and y directions with super‐high tensile stress (20 MPa) and strain at break (3000%), are obtained. This research effectively addresses the inherent limitation of hydrogel materials, which are primarily composed of hydrophilic polymers, limiting their potential for functional diversity and enhanced performance. To overcome this, the expansion of the hydrogel matrix is demonstrated to include hydrophobic polymers such as polycaprolactone (PCL) and polyacrylonitrile (PAN), thanks to the high solubility of DMSO. The MNU technique effectively produces high‐performance hydrogels with enhanced mechanical properties, increasing substrate diversity and enabling the development of durable hydrogel materials for various applications.

Abstract:Abstract Hydrogels are promising soft materials as tissue engineering scaffolds, stretchable sensors, and soft robotics. Yet, it remains challenging to develop synthetic hydrogels with mechanical stability and durability similar to those of the connective tissues. Many of the necessary mechanical properties, such as high strength, high toughness, rapid recovery, and high fatigue resistance, generally cannot be established together using conventional polymer networks. Here we present a type of hydrogels comprising hierarchical structures of picot fibres made of copper-bound self-assembling peptide strands with zipped flexible hidden length. The redundant hidden lengths allow the fibres to be extended to dissipate mechanical load without reducing network connectivity, making the hydrogels robust against damage. The hydrogels possess high strength, good toughness, high fatigue threshold, and rapid recovery, comparable to or even outperforming those of articular cartilage. Our study highlights the unique possibility of tailoring hydrogel network structures at the molecular level to improve their mechanical performance.

Abstract:Hydrogels with good mechanical properties have received intense interests recently. Simplifying the method to prepare tough hydrogels and meantime incorporating additional properties such as anti-swelling, self-recovery, healing ability, facile processability, and recyclability will likely expand their applications significantly. Here we report a simple method to prepare tough hydrogels: dripping a carboxylated polyvinyl alcohol solution into an Al3+ crosslinking medium. The hydrogels became even tougher after equilibrium in DI water. These drip-crosslinked tough hydrogels exhibited anti-swelling, self-recovery, acid assisted healing and great processability, and could be recycled. Interestingly, by tuning the kinetics of dripping and crosslinking, we could make tough hydrogel particles with both conventional spherical shape and various other controllable, unusual shapes such as half-sphere, tear-drop, mushroom-like and rings. We also demonstrated the possibility of using electrospraying to mass-produce uniform, micron-sized tough hydrogels.

Abstract:Articular cartilage, which exhibits toughness and ultralow friction even under high squeezing pressures, plays an important role in the daily movement of joints. However, joint soft tissue lesions or injuries caused by diseases, trauma, or human functional decline are inevitable. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogels, which have a water content and compressive strength similar to those of many tissues and organs, have the potential to replace tough connective tissues, including cartilage. However, currently, PVA hydrogels are not suitable for complex dynamic environments and lack rebound resilience, especially under long-term or multicycle mechanical loads. Inspired by biological tissues that exhibit increased mechanical strength after swelling, we report a tough engineered hydrogel (TEHy) fabricated by swelling and freeze-thaw methods with a high compressive strength (31 MPa), high toughness (1.17 MJ m-3), a low friction coefficient (0.01), and a low energy loss factor (0.22). Notably, the TEHy remained remarkably resilient after 100 000 cycles of contact extrusion and remains intact after being compressed by an automobile with a weight of approximately 1600 kg. The TEHy also exhibited excellent water swelling resistance (volume and weight changes less than 5%). Moreover, skeletal muscle cells were able to readily attach and proliferate on the surface of TEHy-6, suggesting its outstanding biocompatibility. Overall, this swelling and freeze-thaw strategy solves the antifatigue and stability problems of PVA hydrogels under large static loads (>10 000 N) and provides an avenue to fabricate engineering hydrogels with strong antifatigue and antiswelling properties and ultralow friction for potential use as biomaterials in tissue engineering.

Abstract:A novel hydrogel with a new, well‐ defined network structure is prepared through a two‐step method in which the radiation‐peroxidized macromolecular microspheres act as both initiators and crosslinkers. The macromolecular microsphere composite hydrogel (see figure) can effectively dissipate applied mechanical stress and has extremely high mechanical strength. Some of the hydrogels can nearly completely recover their original shapes, even after an extremely high strain (99.7%) in compression tests.
