Abstract:All-solid-state organic polymer composites are promising ionic thermoelectric (i-TE) materials, however, the transition from aqueous to organic gelation always sacrifices their thermoelectric performance, especially the n-type thermopowers are severely unexplored, leaving the unrealized large-scale application of p-n integrated i-TE devices. Herein, we successfully developed all-solid-state PVDF-HFP/NaTFSI/PC (PhNP) with ultrahigh thermopower (Si) of +20 mV K-1. The experimental and molecular simulation results detailly specified the relationship between the interactions among ions and polymers and the highly enhanced thermopower. Meanwhile, a major scientific breakthrough in p-n conversion from +20 to -6 mV K-1 was achieved by incorporating tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane (TPFPB) to capture Na+ and TFSI- anions dominating the thermodiffusion process. As a result, an all-solid-state i-TE generator generated a high voltage over 2.6 V at ΔT=10 K and exhibited excellent cyclic stability under ambient air condition employing only 13 pairs of p-n couples, showing great potential for developing high-performance i-TE systems.

Abstract:The increasing power density makes the modern electronic devices and power equipment generate excess heat, which greatly restricted the applications of polymeric materials because of their poor thermal conductivity. In the present work, inspired by the structure and production process of mille-feuille cakes, we show that electrostatic spraying of boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) onto electrospun polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofibers can produce highly thermally conductive, electrically insulating, flexible and lightweight nanocomposites via a scalable method of building a multilayer PVA/BNNS nanonetwork structure. The PVA/BNNS nanocomposites exhibit an ultrahigh in-plane thermal conductivity of 21.4 W/(m·K) at 22.2 vol% BNNS addition, realized by an orientated BNNS network structure with overlapping interconnections. The BNNS networks exhibit low thermal resistance and interfacial heat scattering between BNNSs. Moreover, for heat dissipation applications, the nanocomposites with an overlapping BNNS network show higher efficiency in dissipating hot spots than randomly dispersed BNNS or directly hot-pressed BNNS composites. These PVA/BNNS nanocomposites can be used as high-performance lateral heat spreaders in next-generation thermal management systems.

Abstract:The carbon-based nano materials, such as carbon nanotubes and graphene nanosheets, are emerged as feasible thermoelectric materials with advantages of low material cost and highly functionalizable surface. However, difficulty on large area manufacture and the relative low power factor limit their applications. Here, starting from graphene flakes solution, we obtained a large area free-standing graphene assembled film longer than 2.0 m based on a quasi-industrial film casting method. Moreover, we successfully realize an enhanced graphene film with a high electrical conductivity of 1400 S cm(-1) and a resultant high thermoelectric power factor of 8.4 mu W cm(-1) K-2 at room temperature, as the highest value among graphene assembled thermoelectric film so far has been obtained. The high thermal power factor is achieved by ferric chloride (FeCl3) solution intercalation method, which efficiently enhances the hole density in graphene film. This large-size, quasi-industrially fabricated, flexible graphene assembled film has great applications in wasted heat harvesting as well as thermal and infrared sensors.
Facile Green Vacuum-Assisted Method for Polyaniline/SWCNT Hybrid Films with Enhanced Thermoelectric Performance by Interfacial Morphology Control

Abstract:The interfacial issue is a critical factor affecting the thermoelectric performance in the organic-inorganic composite system. However, in the traditionally adopted solution casting method for organic-inorganic composites, it is difficult to tune the interface effectively. Herein, as a proof-of-concept, high-performance polyaniline (PANI)/carbon nanotube (CNT) thermoelectric (TE) composite films have been fabricated by a green vacuum-assisted method through the interfacial morphology control via a different solvent treatment. Morphological characterization indicates that the PANI is successfully uniformly wrapped around the surface of CNTs, and the interfaces are improved by proper treatment with N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) solvent. Combining cold-pressure treatment for the vacuum-assisted thin films further achieves higher electrical conductivity and a relatively higher Seebeck coefficient through the enhancement of interfacial adhesion. Ultimately, the composite films prepared with 90 wt % CNTs show the highest TE properties, while the room-temperature electrical conductivity and power factor reach 1965 S cm(-1) and 114.4 mu W.m(-1).K-2 with DMF solvent treatment, respectively. Furthermore, the Seebeck coefficient value increases with increase in temperature from room temperature to 410 K, leading to a maximum power factor of 203 and 402 mu W.m(-1).K-2 for the 70 and 90 wt % CNT composite films, respectively. Our approach using vacuum-assisted assembly method combining solvent and cold-pressure treatment provides a good paradigm for developing high-performance thermoelectric materials that benefit from interface engineering.

Abstract:Flexible nanocomposite thick films consisting of PVA 0.7 PANi 0.3 polymer blend doped with different concentrations of nanoplatelets functionalized Graphene (NPFGx) (where x = 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 wt.%) were fabricated using the solution cast technique. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), energy dispersive spectroscopy analysis (EDX), and Fourier-transform infrared spectra (FT-IR) were used to study the structure of the samples. The results showed that the ordered structure, its orientation, the PANis' well dispersion, and the electrostatic forces play a significant role in enhancing the interfaces between the polymer blend and the NPFG. Thermogravimetric analyses (TGA) and Thermoelectrical analyses (TE) showed that the PVA-PANi conducts a promised conjugated blend for thermoelectric applications. The introduction of the NPFG contents into the blend increased the TE measurements as the DC electrical conductivity ≈ 0.0114 (S cm −1 ), power factor ≈ 3.93 × 10 –3 (W m −1 K −2 ), and Z.T. ≈ 8.4 × 10 –7 , for the 25 wt.% NPFG nanocomposite film. The effect of the polymers' phonon contribution in the thermal conductivity controlling and enhancing the thermal stability of the prepared nanocomposite films.

Abstract:The present study outlines the preparation of a ternary nanocomposite film comprising of polyaniline doped with camphor sulfonic acid (PANI), reduced graphene oxide (rGO), and graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4), and delves into its thermoelectric performance. PANI is known to possess high electrical conductivity (σ) and poor thermal conductivity (κ). However, its potential for thermoelectric applications is constrained by the low value of the Seebeck coefficient (S). The incorporation of g-C3N4 in PANI has been demonstrated to result in an improvement of the Seebeck coefficient. Furthermore, the addition of rGO to the PANI/g-C3N4 sample counteracts the decrease in electrical conductivity. The PANI/g-C3N4/rGO ternary nanocomposite film exhibits an enhanced Seebeck coefficient of ~2.2 times when compared to the PANI sample. The Seebeck coefficient of the PANI/g-C3N4/rGO nanocomposite is enhanced by the energy filtering effect that occurs at the interfaces between g-C3N4/PANI and PANI/rGO. The π-π interaction between the PANI chains and rGO is responsible for the increased electrical conductivity resulting from the well-ordered polymer chain arrangement on the g-C3N4 and rGO surfaces. The ternary nanocomposite sample demonstrated a synergistic improvement in both electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient, resulting in a remarkable ~4.6-fold increment in power factor and an ~4.3-fold enhancement in the figure of merit (zT), as compared to the pristine PANI film.

Abstract:The effects of polyaniline (PANI) with different polymerization times on the film-forming and thermoelectric properties as well as on the performance of SWCNTs/PANI composites were systematically investigated in this study. It was found that the film-forming and flexibility of PANI films improved with the increase in polymerization time. We showed that a super high conductivity of ∼4000 S cm-1 can be achieved for the SWCNTs/PANI composite film, which is the highest value for the SWCNTs/PANI system at present. Both the electrical conductivity and power factor increase by an order of magnitude than that of pure PANI films and far exceed the theoretical value of the mixture model. These results suggest that the sufficiently continuous and ordered regions on the interlayer between the filler and matrix are key to improve the electrical conductivity of composites. Finally, the maximum PF reaches 100 μW m-1 K-2 at 410 K for the 0.6CNT/PANI5h. Furthermore, it is found that the composite films have excellent environmental and structural stability. Our results can deepen the understanding of organic-inorganic thermoelectric composite systems and facilitate the practical application of flexible and wearable thermoelectric materials.
Enhanced Thermoelectric Performance In Graphitic Zno (0001) Nanofilms

Abstract:We investigate the thermoelectric properties of ultrathin graphitic ZnO (0001) nanofilms based on first-principles calculations and Boltzmann transport theory. Staircase-like densities of states induced by quantum confinement in the nanofilms give rise to improved Seebeck coefficients and electrical conductivities. The optimized figure of merit for the single-layer graphitic ZnO (0001) nanofilm is estimated to be 0.6 at 300 K, which is about 120 times larger than that of bulk ZnO (0.005). Our results suggest that the graphitic ZnO (0001) nanofilms can be designed for high performance thermoelectric applications. (C) 2013 American Institute of Physics. Abstract:p-Phenediamino-modified graphene (PDG) has been newly synthesized via a facile green one-step chemical route as a functionalized graphene-based additive to copolymerize with aniline for fabricating innovative PDG/polyaniline conducting polymer composites containing very special semi-interpenetrating networks (S-IPNs). The S-IPNs not only provide additional pathways by creating chemically bonded PDG and PANI for smoothly transporting carriers but greatly reduce the amount of graphene required to less than a few percent could effectively improve the overall electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, and thus the thermoelectric (TE) performance. The found optimized TE figure of merit (ZT) of 0.74 approaches a practical high level which is comparable or much higher than previously reported ones for TE polymers.

Abstract:Organic thermoelectric (TE) materials have been widely investigated due to their good stability, easy synthesis, and high electrical conductivity. Among them, polyaniline/carbon nanotubes (PANI/CNTs) composites have attracted significant attention for pursuing enhanced TE properties to meet the demands of commercial applications. In this review, we summarize recent advances in versatile PANI/CNTs composites in terms of the dispersion methods of CNTs (such as the addition of surfactants, mechanical grinding, and CNT functional group modification methods), fabrication engineering (physical blending and in-situ polymerization), post-treatments (solvent treatments to regulate the doping level and microstructure of PANI), and multi-components composites (incorporation of other components to enhance energy filtering effect and Seebeck coefficient), respectively. Various approaches are comprehensively discussed to illustrate the microstructure modulation and conduction mechanism within PANI/CNTs composites. Furthermore, we briefly give an outlook on the challenges of the PANI/CNTs composites for achieving high performance and hope to pave a way for future development of high-performance PANI/CNTs composites for sustainable energy utilization.

Abstract:Interfacial thermal resistance is the main barrier restricting the heat dissipation of thermal management materials in electronic equipment. The interface structure formed by covalent bonding is an effective way to promote interfacial heat transfer. Herein, an integrated composite with multi-aspect covalent bonding beneficial for heat transmission is constructed by polyimide (PI) polymerization with maleimide modified graphene nanosheets (M@GNS). The interfacial structure with low thermal resistance built by covalent bonding and oriented graphene arrangement initiated by the coating process makes the in-plane thermal conductivity of the composite as high as 16.10 W m-1 K-1. Finite element simulation and 1000 bending tests are carried out to further verify the performance advantages of the integrated structure in the internal thermal diffusion and long-term use of the composite. M@GNS/PI with integrated structure provides extra heat transfer channels for heat dissipation, possibly providing an effective way to address the traditional thermal accumulation issue of electronic devices.

Abstract:In this work, polyaniline (PANI) is coated on single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) via electrochemical polymerization method to fabricate PANI/SWCNT bilayer films with enhanced thermoelectric properties. Effects of deposition time and voltage, and acid types and concentrations on the thermoelectric properties of the films are studied. The results showed that PANI layer was effectively coated on the surface of SWCNT layer by electrochemical polymerization method. In addition, carrier transport and the electrical conductivity ( σ ) of the PANI/SWCNT bilayer film was improved due to interfacial π-π interaction between PANI and SWCNT, and the Seebeck coefficient ( S ) was increased due to the energy filtering effect at the interface of PANI/SWCNT. The maximum PF of PANI/SWCNT at room temperature was 155.3 ± 7.2 μW m −1 K −2 with the σ of 654.9 ± 41.8 S cm −1 and the S of 48.7 ± 0.5 μV K −1 when the deposition voltage and time were 1.0 V and 240.0 s using 0.5 M HCl, respectively. Finally, a self-powered thermoelectric device composed of five pairs of p-n junctions was prepared with PANI/SWCNT (1 V, 240 s) as the p-type legs and copper adhesives as the n-type legs, and the maximum output power was 0.27 μW at a temperature difference of 50 K. Therefore, this demonstrates that electrochemical polymerization is a feasible and effective way of fabricating conductive polymers/carbon nanotubes bilayer films with enhanced thermoelectric properties, which have potential application in powering wearable electronics.

Abstract:Polyaniline (PANI)-based thermoelectric (TE) materials have attracted considerable attention for flexible electronic energy harvesting devices because of properties such as solution processibility, excellent environmental stability, and low cost. However, the typical opposite dependence between electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient impedes their development, and tremendous efforts have been devoted to increasing their TE efficiency. This mini review focuses on key strategies in developing high-performance PANI-based TE materials, including doping engineering (fine-tuning of doping level), modulation of molecular orientation, inorganic nanoparticles incorporation to combine the merits of their components, interface engineering that introduces interfacial interactions and an energy-filtering effect, and other strategies. With properly optimized components, microstructure, and fabrication processing, which aid in the carrier transport properties, the overall performance of PANI-based TE composites has been greatly enhanced, promoting the improvement of PANI-based composites for sustainable energy utilization.

Abstract:As a common two-dimensional carbon material, graphene has been widely doped into polymers to prepare high-performance dielectric materials. However, the shortcomings of graphene, such as large specific surface area and poor dispersion, limit its further application. Therefore, in this work, to solve the problem regarding the uniform dispersion of graphene in the matrix, in situ polymerization was used to prepare graphene/polyimide films, in which 1,4-diiodobutane was used as a reduction agent to prevent the aggregation of graphene oxide (GO) during imidization. High dielectric constant composite films were obtained by adjusting the ratio of 1,4-diiodobutane in GO. The results show that the resulting graphene/polyimide composite film possessed a dielectric constant of up to 197.5, which was more than 58 times higher than that of the polyimide (PI) film. Furthermore, compared to the pure PI film, the composite films showed better thermal stability and mechanical properties. Thermal performance tests showed that the 1,4-diiodobutane added during the preparation of the composite film was thermally decomposed, and there was no residue. We believe our preparation method can be extended to other high dielectric composite films, which will facilitate their further development and application in high power density energy storage materials.

Abstract:The in situ surface polymerization strategies promote the oriented and compact growth of HCl‐doped polyaniline on the surface of single walled carbon nanotube due to π–π interaction. The thermoelectric performance of the bilayer composite is significantly improved due to the enhanced Seebeck coefficient while preserving the high electric conductivity. Flexible thermoelectric composites are promising in harvesting low‐temperature energies and have a wide range of applications in wearable devices. However, the uncontrollable interfaces between the components significantly scatter the transport of electrons leading to a reduced thermoelectric performance. In this research, hydrochloride acid doped polyaniline (PANI) is directly prepared on the surface of a single‐walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) film to form a bilayer structure in controlling the interfacial filtering effect and preserve the high conductivity. Under optimal conditions, a PANI/SWCNT bilayer composite exhibits a Seebeck coefficient of 26 μVK−1 at near room temperature, and a high electrical conductivity of 1320 S cm−1 is maintained. The Seebeck coefficient is a twofold increase compared to a pure SWCNT film, while the power factor is three times the value from a pure SWCNT film and 500 times that from a solution‐mixed PANI/SWCNT composite. The enhanced thermoelectric performance is attributed to SWCNT‐assisted growth through π–π interaction promoting the formation of an oriented and compacted PANI layer, and the bilayer structure can also maximally maintain the electrical conductivity of the composite. The bilayer composite has then been investigated as an energy harvester and a temperature sensor, indicating its reliable performance in wearable applications.

Abstract:In this study, we systematically varied the weight ratios of zinc and iron oxides (2 wt%, 4 wt%, and 6 wt%) to fabricate nanocomposites consisting of polyaniline (PANI), zinc oxide (ZnO), and iron oxide (Fe 3 O 4 ) through the sol–gel method. Comprehensive analyses using FTIR, XRD, and SEM were conducted to elucidate the functional groups, particle size, crystal structure, and surface morphologies of PANI/ZnO/Fe 3 O 4 nanocomposites. Furthermore, thermoelectric characteristics were thoroughly investigated. A mechanistic insight into the PANI/ZnO/Fe 3 O 4 nanocomposite formation was proposed based on the FTIR findings. SEM investigations revealed the presence of spherical particles in all nanocomposites. Among the three PANI/ZnO/Fe 3 O 4 nanocomposites characterized, the formulation with 6 wt% exhibited superior thermoelectric performance. The electrical conductivity of the nanocomposites exhibited a notable increase from 23.1 to 42.7 mS/cm when the temperature elevated from 30–90 °C. Concurrently, the thermal conductivity exhibited a decline from 1.229 to 0.704 Wm −1 K −1 , resulting in an augmented figure of merit of 0.024. This enhancement underscores the positive influence of increasing the weight percentage of ZnO and Fe 3 O 4 with PANI on the TE performances of the nanocomposites.

Polyacrylonitrile Coupled Graphite Oxide Film with Improved Heat Dissipation Ability

Abstract:Graphene film has potential to act as an excellent heat dissipation material. However, its thermal conductivity suffers from some limitations, including small graphene lateral sizes and low production efficiency from a practical viewpoint. To solve these issues, we propose an industrially viable protocol to synthesize homogeneously oxidized graphite oxide (GtO) with large lateral sizes and easy-purifying features. We employ polyacrylonitrile (PAN) as a coupling agent to repair the defects on GtO sheets and link these sheets together during the annealing treatment. The graphitized GtO/10%PAN film (g-GtO/10%PAN) shows excellent thermal and electrical properties, with an in-plane thermal conductivity of 1629.24 +/- 43.88 W m(-1) K-1 and an electrical conductivity of 9645.29 +/- 199.44 S cm(-1). Furthermore, it also exhibits outstanding flexibility; the original thermal conductivity can be maintained after 20,000 times bending. The g-GtO/10%PAN film offers an alternative to replace commercially used graphitized polyimide (PI) film. Our research provides a general method for the fabrication of high quality graphene film. Novel Hybrid p- and n-Type Organic Thermoelectric Materials Based on Mussel-Inspired Polydopamine

Abstract:Mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) can serve as building blocks and interfaces in designing functional materials. Here, the use of PDA as an interlayer between polyaniline (PANi) and multidimensional carbon materials, such as graphene quantum dots (GQD), multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), and graphene nanosheets (GNS), to improve the thermoelectric performance of p-type polymer-based materials has been reported. The introduction of PDA promotes the carrier mobility of GQD/PDA/PANi, CNT/PDA/PANi, and GNS/PDA/PANi ternary composites due to the superior adhesive property of PDA. An optimal conductivity of 4.98 × 104 S m–1 and a power factor of 92.17 μW m–1 K–2 at 363 K are achieved in GNS/PDA/PANi, which are much higher than the values of GNS/PDA and GNS/PANi. More surprisingly, despite the fact that GQD/PDA, CNT/PDA, and GNS/PDA binary composites show p-type properties, the pyrolysis treatment of GQD/PDA, CNT/PDA, and GNS/PDA at 800 °C results in a gain in both the electrical conductivity and negative Seebeck coefficient of c-GQD/PDA, c-CNT/PDA, and c-GNS/PDA. The c-CNT/PDA composites possess the highest Seebeck value of −30.2 μV K–1 and a maximum power factor value of 35.57 μW m–1 K–2.
