Abstract:A series of Cu-based TiO2-supported catalysts were synthesized via facile ammonia evaporation for the selective hydrogenation of dimethyl oxalate (DMO) to ethylene glycol (EG). A 100% conversion of DMO, 99% selectivity for EG, and super stability were achieved over the 20% Cu/P25 TiO2 catalyst. The effect of the crystal phase of the titania support and the interaction between Cu and P25 were investigated. The active copper species located at the interface between the anatase and rutile phases play important roles in the selective hydrogenation. The excellent catalytic performance was mainly attributed to better copper dispersion and an appropriate ratio of Cu0/Cu+, which stems from the intimate interaction between Cu and the P25 support.

Abstract:The reaction/diffusion kinetics are fundamentally determined by the electronic properties of supported Pd catalysts and further govern the catalytic activity and selectivity in the partial hydrogenation of alkynes. However, how the electronic metal-support interactions and the tradeoff between reaction and diffusion affect the catalytic performance still remain elusive. Here, the optimized catalyst Pd supported on carbon decorated with oxygen-deficient TiO2(Pd/TiO2-V-o@C) features a remarkable enhancement in performance for semihydrogenation of 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol with a TOF 31-fold higher than that of Lindlar catalyst. The improved performance of Pd/TiO2-V-o@C benefits from the fact that TiO2-V-o@C subtly modulates the electronic properties of Pd, and an appropriate amount of TiO2-V-o allows a decrease in the reaction barrier and C promotes the diffusion ability of the catalyst, achieving the balance between reaction and diffusion. By using microkinetic modeling, the reactivity difference of various catalysts is quantitatively predicted and the calculated turnover frequency volcano curve is rationalized as a function of reaction barrier and diffusion ability, which agrees well with the experimental results. The quantitative regulation of catalytic performance by tuning the support properties is a general strategy, which provides a basis to design robust catalysts for diverse reactions.

Abstract:For the supported catalysts for the selective hydrogenation of a, 6 - unsaturated aldehyde with H2, tailoring of metal - support interfacial effect to improve reaction performance is a significant but challenging subject. In this work, we regulated both the size regimes of the Ir deposits (single atom, nanocluster and nanoparticle) and the crystal plane of anatase TiO2 (TiO2(1 0 1), TiO2(1 0 0) and TiO2(0 0 1)) so as to alter the Ir-TiOx interfacial properties, in order to unravel reaction mechanism of selective hydrogenation of crotonaldehyde over the Ir/TiO2 catalysts. Both the activity and selectivity to crotyl alcohol increased as the Ir size grew from single atom to nanoparticle, ascribed to high Ir0 content, high concentration of surface defects and prominent H-spillover effect on the Ir nanoparticles. Moreover, the in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that an end-on C=O adsorption mode for crotonaldehyde molecule was favored at the Ir-TiOx interface particularly at high H coverage, which thus facilitated the hydrogenation of C=O bond to form crotyl alcohol. Moreover, the highest reactivity of the Ir nanoparticles was evidenced by the lowest reaction barrier. These results explicitly demonstrate that larger metal nanoparticles and adsorption geometry of the reactant at the metal - support interface are vital for improved catalytic performance, which would shed light on the ingenious catalyst design.

Abstract:Tailoring strong metal-support interactions (SMSIs) have been verified to become an efficient strategy for developing novel heterogeneous catalysts. Here, both TiO2 supports (anatase (A) and rutile (R)) were employed to prepare the Pd/TiO2 catalysts and strongly titania-crystal-phase-dependent Pd-TiO2 SMSIs and catalysis in CO2 hydrogenation were observed. A-TiO2 is more facile to undergo Pd-TiO2 SMSIs than R-TiO2, which could be relevant to better reducibility over calcined Pd/A-TiO2 C catalyst. Catalytic performance of the Pd/TiO2-R (reduced) catalysts in CO2 hydrogenation are sensitive to the Pd-TiO2 structures, among which the Pd nanoparticles mostly encapsulated by TiO2-x overlayers over Pd/A-TiO2-R catalyst with more prominent SMSIs is more intrinsically active. This could be ascribed to both stronger H-spillover and hydrogenation property and better CO2 activation capacity over Pd/A-TiO2-R catalyst. However, its catalytic activity is seriously restricted by the number of intrinsically active sites due to less exposed Pd atoms to block H2 activation sites. These results clearly demonstrate the crystal-phase engineering as an efficient strategy to tailor the SMSIs for developing improved heterogeneous catalysts.

For Pd-based nanocatalysts, most Pd species on the {100} plane of TiO2 are present in the oxidized form with positive charges and unexpectedly show higher reactivity than the Pd species in the zero-valence state on the {101} and {001} planes. On the contrary, Pt species on all three crystal planes of TiO2 show zero-valence state, with relatively low conversion, but much better selectivity for hydrogenation of a CO bond than Pd-based catalysts. Well-designed experiments manipulating the stability and type of surface oxygen species confirmed that the essence of the crystal facet effect of the catalyst support actually creates a unique nanoconfined interface at the molecular level to construct a surface p-band intermediate state (PBIS), which provides a new alternative channel for surface electron transfer and consequently accelerates the reaction kinetics.

Calculated results indicate that metal clusters on the pristine and oxygen-deficient TiO2 are mostly coordinated to O2c ions, and the defective surface may provide additional oxygen vacancies for Cu6 and Au6 cluster anchoring. It turns out that the interfacial Ti5c and Cu & delta;+/ Au & delta;-ions provide adsorption and hydrogenation sites for the reaction intermediates with unsaturated O and C atoms, respectively. The turnover frequency for DMO consumption is much higher on Cu-TiO2 than on Au-TiO2, Cu(1 1 1), and Cu(2 1 1) at 443.15 K and 20 bar of total pressure. Given the satisfactory methyl glycolate (MG) selectivity, the Cu-TiO2 catalyst has the potential to act as an excellent catalyst for the selective MG production.

Abstract:The influence of crystal phase of TiO2 on the catalytic performance of transfer hydrogenation using formic acid (HCOOH) over Pd/TiO2 catalyst has not been clarified before. Herein, Pd/TiO2 catalysts with four typical TiO2 crystal phases, i.e., rutile, anatase, brookite and TiO2(B), were synthesized and analyzed. The catalytic results showed that the TiO2 crystal phase could vary the transfer hydrogenation performance of the Pd/TiO2 catalysts by several to tens of times, which was in the following tendency: Pd/Rutile > Pd/Anatase > Pd/Brookite > Pd/TiO2(B). Detailed comparison manifests the Pd dispersion state is obviously different on various TiO2 surfaces, which the relatively small particle size and more metallic are observed on Pd/Rutile and Pd/Anatase catalysts, contributing to the high catalytic performance. The reaction mechanism study further indicates that HCOOH on Pd/Rutile is more liable to be dehydrogenated than that on other Pd/TiO2 catalysts, especially for the transformation of bidentate to monodentate formate. Pd/Brookite shows the relatively highest selectivity of HCOOH dehydration. However, it is difficult for the HCOOH dehydrogenation to occur on Pd/TiO2(B). This work elucidates the roles of TiO2 crystal phase in Pd/TiO2 catalysts for the transfer hydrogenation reaction, which is expected to facilitate the development of efficient catalysts.

Abstract:Atomic dispersed metal sites in single-atom catalysts are highly mobile and easily sintered to form large particles, which deteriorates the catalytic performance severely. Moreover, lack of criterion concerning the role of the metal-support interface prevents more efficient and wide application. Here, a general strategy is reported to synthesize stable single atom catalysts by crafting on a variety of cobalt-based nanoarrays with precisely controlled architectures and compositions. The highly uniform, well-aligned, and densely packed nanoarrays provide abundant oxygen vacancies (17.48%) for trapping Pd single atoms and lead to the creation of 3D configured catalysts, which exhibit very competitive activity toward low temperature CO oxidation (100% conversion at 90 degrees C) and prominent long-term stability (continuous conversion at 60 degrees C for 118 h). Theoretical calculations show that O vacancies at high-index {112} facet of Co(x)O(y)nanocrystallite are preferential sites for trapping single atoms, which guarantee strong interface adhesion of Pd species to cobalt-based support and play a pivotal role in preventing the decrement of activity, even under moisture-rich conditions (approximate to 2% water vapor). The progress presents a promising opportunity for tailoring catalytic properties consistent with the specific demand on target process, beyond a facile design with a tunable metal-support interface.

Abstract:Crystal engineering of metal oxide supports represents an emerging strategy to improve the catalytic performance of noble metal catalysts in catalytic oxidation of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs). The Pt catalyst on P25-TiO2 (Pt/TiO2-P) showed optimal activity, selectivity, and stability, even under high-space velocity and humidity conditions. Due to the strong interaction between Pt and P25-TiO2 originating from the more lattice defects of TiO2, the Pt/TiO2-P catalyst possessed stable Pt0 and Pt2+ species during DCE oxidation and superior redox property, resulting in high activity and stability. Furthermore, the Pt/TiO2-P catalyst possessed abundant hydroxyl groups, which prompted the removal of chlorine species in the form of HCl and significantly decreased the selectivity of vinyl chloride (VC) as the main byproduct. On the other hand, the Pt/TiO2-P catalyst exhibited a different reaction path, in which the hydroxyl groups on its surface activated DCE to form VC and enolic species, besides the lattice oxygen of TiO2 for the Pt catalysts on rutile and anatase TiO2. This work provides guidance for the rational design of catalysts for CVOCs.

Abstract:A highly efficient Ag catalyst supported on a novel Ti-decorated spherical fibrous silica (Ag/Ti-KCC-1) was synthesized via a facile approach. Characterization of catalysts, including FT-IR, N-2 physisorption, TEM, ICP-OES and DRUV-vis was carried out to investigate the physicochemical properties of the catalyst, XPS, H-2-TPR, H-2-TPD and DMO-TGA were conducted to further elucidate the effect of Ti dopant. It is shown that the Ti additive is able to, (1) inhibit the aggregation of Ag; (2) induce electron transfer from Ti to Ag, which effect the Ag dispersion and the adsorption ability of the reactants on the catalyst surface. Proper amount of Ti additive provided a balanced coverage of both hydrogen and dimethyl oxalate (DMO) on catalyst surface, which is essential in promoting the performance of the catalyst in the hydrogenation of DMO. By using the novel 10Ag/0.02Ti-KCC-1 catalyst, a high MG yield of 93.0% under extremely high WHSV of 1.75h(-1) is achieved.

Abstract:Copper based catalyst with Si-Ti binary-oxide support is synthesized via a facile ammonia evaporation method for selective hydrogenation of dimethyloxalate (DMO) to ethylene glycol (EG). 100% conversion of DMO and 90% selectivity to EG could be obtained over the Cu/SiO2-TiO2 catalyst at high liquid hourly space velocity (LHSV). Catalytic stability is greatly enhanced when the Si-Ti binary oxide is used as support because of the intimate interaction between copper species and the support. The improved catalytic performance compared to the unitary oxide-supported catalysts SiO2 and TiO2 could be attributed to the highly dispersed copper species stabilized by the binary support. Also, the electron transfer from TiO2 to Cu-species is found to play an important role in improving the surface charge density of the metallic copper, which is helpful to improve the catalytic activity. Abstract:The effect of TiO2 phase structure on the dispersion of Ru nanoparticles was investigated in this study. Rutile-type TiO2 (r-TiO2) appears to be a superior support to prohibit the aggregation of RuO2 during calcination in air. Compared with anatase-type TiO2 (a-TiO2) supported Ru nanoparticles (4.0 +/- 2.4 nm), r-TiO2 supported ones exhibited a narrower particle size distribution (1.1 +/- 0.2 nm). This unique property was attributed to a strong interaction between RuO2 and r-TiO2 in terms of the formation of the Ru-O-Ti bond, which was confirmed by X-ray absorption measurements and H2-TPR experiments. This strong interaction not only promotes to a great extent the highly efficient dispersion of Ru nanoparticles, but also prevents their aggregation. As a result, the Ru/r-TiO2 catalysts displayed a much higher activity and thermal stability than the Ru/a-TiO2 in the reaction of CO2 methanation.
Promoting effect of titanium on Cu/γ-Al2O3 catalyst for CO2 hydrogenation

Abstract:This study reveals the promoting effect of titanium on Cu/γ-Al2O3 catalyst for the hydrogenation of CO2 by X-ray diffraction (XRD), temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. The relationship between the area of metallic copper and the activity of methanol synthesis has also been investigated. The catalytic activity over Cu-Ti/γ-Al2O3 catalyst for CO2 hydrogenation is higher than that of Cu/γ-Al2O3. The adding of titanium is beneficial in enhancing the dispersion of the supported copper oxide and make the reduction behavior of Cu-Ti/γAl2O3 catalyst different from the individual supported copper oxide calalysts. For the CuO/γ-Al2O3 catalyst there are two reducible copper oxide species: α and β peaks are attributed to the reduction of highly dispersed copper oxide species and bulk CuO species respectively. For the Cu-Ti/γ-Al2O3 catalyst, four reduction peaks are observed. Two TPR peaks with lower temperatures (namely α1 and α2) have been attributed to the hydrogen uptake of nested oxygen ions and temptable oxygen ions, respectively. β1 and β2 peaks are attributed to the reduction of bulk CuO with different particle size of copper. XPS results reveal that there exists strong interaction between the copper oxide and titania which makes the binding energy of Cu(2P3/2) shift to higher value.

Abstract:Tuning CO2 hydrogenation selectivity to obtain targeted value-added chemicals and fuels has attracted increasing attention. However, a fundamental understanding of the way to control the selectivity is still lacking, posing a challenge in catalyst design and development. Herein, we report our new discovery in ambient pressure CO2 hydrogenation reaction where selectivity can be completely reversed by simply changing the crystal phases of TiO2 support (anatase- or rutile-TiO2 ) or changing metal loadings on anatase-TiO2 . Operando spectroscopy and NAP-XPS studies reveal that the determining factor is a different electron transfer from metal to the support, most probably as a result of the different extents of hydrogen spillover, which changes the adsorption and activation of the intermediate of CO. Based on this new finding, we can not only regulate CO2 hydrogenation selectivity but also tune catalytic performance in other important reactions, thus opening up a door for efficient catalyst development by rational design.

Abstract:Binary supports TiO2-CeO2 and TiO2-ZrO2 improved CH3OH formation and selectivity effectively, but with little effect on CO2 conversion. Pd-Cu/Ti0.8Ce0.2O2 enhanced CH3OH formation by ca. 46 % comparing to Pd-Cu/TiO2-C. Pd-Cu/Ti0.1Zr0.9O2 exhibited the highest catalytic performance: CH3OH formation rate was 0.62 mu mol g-cat(-1)s(-1), which was enhanced by 121 %, 51 %, and 51 % in comparison to Pd-Cu/TiO2-C, Pd-Cu/ZrO2-C, and Pd-Cu/Ti0.8Ce0.2O2, respectively. More interestingly, lowering temperature from 523 K to 493 K further enhanced CH3OH selectivity from 44.6%-58.8%. Binary supports significantly increased surface area. Unexpectedly, it did not improve H-2 reduction for Pd-Cu/TixZr1-xO2 in H-2-TPR, but decreased H-2 uptake to stoichiometric level, implying SMSI was adjusted to moderate state. However, the excessive H-2 uptake further increased for Pd-Cu/TixCe1-xO2, indicating unalleviated SMSI. Furthermore, Pd-Cu alloy formation was improved in Pd-Cu/TixZr1-xO2, which was favorable for CH3OH synthesis. Binary supports also improved CO2 adsorptive behavior towards weakly-bonded species, contributing to better performance.
