Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), a two-dimensional layered material, has attracted ever-growing interest as one of the most promising non-noble-metal electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, its catalytic efficiency is far from that of the best-performing Pt-based catalysts due to insufficient active sites and poor conductivity. Herein, density functional theory (DFT) simulations indicate that the catalytic activity of MoS2 could be improved through synergistic effects between the graphene substrate and Ni atom adsorption. Following this result, we designed and synthesized dual-modified MoS2 nanosheets with nanoporous Ni and reduced graphite oxide, which show a low onset potential (85 mV), a small Tafel slope (71.3 mV dec–1), and a high cycling stability as HER catalysts. Abstract:In this study, ultra-thin and porous molybdenum selenide (MoSe2) nanosheets were prepared through a modified liquid exfoliation method as efficient electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). This novel structure enables the exposure of more catalytically active sites and moreover maintains effective electron transport, resulting in a small peak potential of ∼75 mV as well as long-term durability. In addition, due to the facile and economical preparation method as well as its eco-friendly synthetic conditions, this study provides a high-performance HER catalyst with promising commercial application prospects.

Abstract:Direct decoration of transition metallic dichalcogenides such as molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) on pristine graphene is extremely difficult owing to its surface inertness. Under assistance of supercritical carbon dioxide, we develop a unique synthesis of a high-quality hybrid nanostructure with ultrafine MoS2 nanosheets supported on pristine graphene that exhibits excellent properties as an advanced catalyst for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). These include a Tafel slope of ~42 mV·decade−1, onset potential as low as ~58 mV and small potential of 81 mV for 10 mA·cm−2 current density, much superior than those obtained from other carbon-based counterparts such as carbon black, carbon nanotubes, and reduced graphene oxide. Both these potentials are the best available values ever achieved so far among all graphene or carbon nanotube-supported molybdenum sulfide. The exceptional HER activity is found to be closely associated with high density of exposed edge sites of ultrafine MoS2 nanosheets being firmly and uniformly anchored on inherently conductive graphene sheets as a result of high wettability between the supercritical fluid and inert carbon surfaces. The facile yet effective supercritical method can also be applicable to a wide range of electrochemically active nanospecies in the development of highly efficient graphene-based nano-catalysts for broad energy applications.

Abstract:The development of advanced and efficient synthetic methods is pivotal for the widespread application of 2D materials. In this study, a facile and scalable solvent-free mechanochemical approach is approached, employing graphene quantum dots (GQDs) as exfoliation agents, for the synthesis and functionalization of nearly atom-layered MoS2 nanosheets (ALMS). The resulting ALMS exhibits an ultrathin average thickness of 4 nm and demonstrates high solvent stability. The impressive yield of ALMS reached 63%, indicating its potential for scalable production of stable nanosheets. Remarkably, the ALMS catalyst exhibits excellent HER performance. Moreover, the ALMS catalyst showcases exceptional long-term durability, maintaining stable performance for nearly 200 h, underscoring its potential as a highly efficient and durable electrocatalyst. Significantly, the catalytic properties of ALMS are significantly influenced by ball milling production conditions. The GQD-assisted large-scale machinery synthesis pathway provides a promising avenue for the development of efficient and high-performance ultrathin 2D materials.

Abstract:Fabricating a cost effective hydrogen evolution reaction catalyst without using precious metal elements is in crucial demand for environmentally-benign energy production. In this work, the thin and edge-rich molybdenum disulfide nanosheets, with carbon doped in the interlayers and decorated on graphene, were developed by a facile solvothermal process. The as-synthesized nanohybrids exhibited high catalytic ability for the hydrogen evolution electrochemical reaction with an onset overpotential of 0.165 mV and a Tafel slope of 46 mV dec(-1). Furthermore, the prepared nanohybrids also showed better durability and stability. Our work may lead to a potential method for in situ production of metal carbide-sulphur hybrid nanomaterials with promising applications for the hydrogen evolution reaction.

Abstract:Porous 3D self-supported electrocatalysts have the advantages of being binder-free and facile gas transport within electrodes. In this work, metallic MoS2 nanosheets are vertically grown on graphene-protected Ni foam in situ. The free-standing feature of the metallic MoS2 nanosheets maximally exposes the active sites at both edges and the additional basal plane. The graphene deposited on Ni foam, on the other hand, enhances the acid resistant ability. As expected, the as-synthesized catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic activity for hydrogen evolution with a quite low overpotential of 117 mV at 10 mA cm−2, a small Tafel slope of 38 mV per decade and excellent stability. This work will broaden the vision to improve the activity of self-supported electrocatalysts by polymorph engineering of anchored catalysts.
Epitaxial MoS2 Nanosheets on Nitrogen Doped Graphite Foam As a 3D Electrode for Highly Efficient Electrochemical Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts are crucial to the application of renewable energy. In this study, the interactive MoS2 nanosheets uniformly grown on nitrogen-doped graphite foam (MoS2/NGF) are obtained via a facile solvothermal synthesis method. The resulting MoS2/NGF shows excellent catalytic activity for HER performance, which exhibits low onset potential of 12 mV versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), low overpotential of 35 mV at 10 mA cm(-2), and outstanding stability over 3000 cycles under acidic conditions. The results reveal that mixture of different oxidation degrees of the graphite foam bring in surface defects, which promote the epitaxial growth of MoS2 nanosheets on the outer graphene layer with more defects. These defects induce a synergistic effect and contribute to the HER process. Further experiments on the effect of oxidation degree of graphite foam on the HER performance for the MoS2/NGF composites confirmed that there is an optimum condition for the catalytic activity of HER due to the internal conductive channels provided by graphite foam. The HER performance of MoS2/NGF is superior to most of the reported MoS2-based catalysts, especially its onset potential and the exchange current density. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Electrochemical water splitting has become a potential pathway for sustainable hydrogen production, where high-efficiency low-cost catalysts are highly desirable. MoS2 is a promising candidate to substitute effective but expensive Pt-based catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction. In this work, the computer simulation results reveal that alloying with Co and compositing with graphene could significantly improve the electrocatalytic performance of MoS2 thanks to the activation of MoS2 inert surfaces and enhanced electron transport. Based on this finding, we designed and synthesized a catalyst of (CoMo)S-2/graphene, which exhibits excellent performance with low onset potential (28 mV), overpotential (100 mV) for driving a current density of 10 mA cm(-2), and Tafel slope (60.8 mV dec(-1)), superior to most of MoS2-based electrocatalysts reported in open literatures. This study supplies important information for fundamental understanding of high-efficiency non-noble electrocatalysts toward applications in energy-conversion devices.

Abstract:Herein, we report a unique thermal synthesis method to prepare a novel two-dimensional (2D) hybrid nanostructure consisting of ultrathin and tiny-sized molybdenum disulfide nano platelets homogeneously inlaid in graphene sheets (MoS2/G) with excellent electrocatalytic performance for HER. In this process, molybdenum oleate served as the source of both molybdenum and carbon, while crystalline sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) served as both reaction template and sulfur source. The remarkable integration of MoS2 and graphene in a well-assembled 2D hybrid architecture provided large electrochemically active surface area and a huge number of active sites and also exhibited extraordinary collective properties for electron transport and H+ trapping. The MoS2/G inlaid nanosheets deliver ultrahigh catalytic activity toward HER among the existing electrocatalysts with similar compositions, presenting a low onset overpotential approaching 30 mV, a current density of 10 mA/cm(2) at similar to 110 mV, and a Tafel slope as small as 67.4 mV/dec. Moreover, the strong bonding between MoS2 nanoplatelets and graphene enabled outstanding long-term electrochemical stability and structural integrity, exhibiting almost 100% activity retention after 1000 cycles and similar to 97% after 100 000 s of continuous testing (under static overpotential of -0.15 V). The synthetic strategy is simple, inexpensive, and scalable for large-scale production and also can be extended to diverse inlaid 2D nanoarchitectures with great potential for many other applications.

Abstract:We report amorphous MoSxCly as a high-performance electrocatalyst for both electrochemical and photoelectrochemical hydrogen generation. This novel ternary electrocatalyst is synthesized via chemical vapour deposition at temperatures lower than those typically used to grow crystalline MoS2 nanostructures and structurally characterized. The MoSxCly electrocatalysts exhibit stable and high catalytic activity toward the hydrogen evolution reaction, as evidenced by large cathodic current densities at low overpotentials and low Tafel slopes (ca. 50 mV decade(-1)). The electrocatalytic performance can be further enhanced through depositing MoSxCly on conducting vertical graphenes. Furthermore, MoSxCly can be directly deposited on p-type silicon photocathodes to enable efficient photoelectrochemical hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:Aerogel composite materials consisting of MoS2 and reduced graphite oxide (rGO) are synthesized by a facile general hydrothermal method, where GO is utilized as a template and provides a novel substrate for the nucleation and subsequent growth of MoS2. These MoS2/rGO hybrid nanostructures exhibit three-dimensional (3D) leaf -like morphology, and show excellent electrocatalytic activities of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), with a low overpotential of approximately 105 mV, a small Tafel slope of 51 mV/dec and a large exchange, current density (j(0)) of 3.28 x 10(-5) A/cm(2). The superior electrochemical performance should be attributed to the 3D porous MoS2/rGO hybrid architecture, which enhances the conductivity from graphene to MoS2 as well as the HER activity. Abstract:MoSe2 nanosheets are vertically grown on a 3D graphene network by Z. Wen, J. Chen, and co-workers on page 414 as electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The vertical orientation is beneficial for maximizing exposed active edges to protons, facilitates ions/electrolyte transport at the electrode interface, and minimizes agglomeration and restacking of the nanosheets, while the underlying grapheme improves the electrical contact between the MoSe2 catalyst and the electrode. The resulting hybrids show a improved catalytic activity compared with MoSe2 nanosheets alone.

Abstract:By increasing the density of exposed active edges, the perpendicularly oriented structure of MoSe2 nanosheets facilitates ion/electrolyte transport at the electrode interface and minimizes the restacking of nanosheets, while the graphene improves the electrical contact between the catalyst and the electrode. Abstract:Herein, we report a simple in situ hydro thermal synthetic method for the preparation of novel three-dimensional (3D) nanoflowers forming with few-layered and expanded interlayer spacing MoS2 nanoflakes via restricting the polymerization of guar gum and the growth of MoS2. In this process, hexaammonium molybdate ((NH4)(6)Mo7O24 center dot 4H(2)O) and thiourea (CH4N2S) acted as the precursor of molybdenum and sulfur respectively, while guar gum functioned as both the template of chemical reaction and carbon source. The obtained MoS2/guar gum carbon hybrid nanoflowers (MoS2/CF) in a well-assembled 3D nanoflowers architecture provides copious active sites and thus prevents inherent stacking among MoS2 layers. Because of all these advantages, the electrochemical evaluation demonstrates that MoS2/CF-750 shows extraordinary hydrogen evolution reaction electrocatalytic performances, possessing extremely low onset potential of approximately 20 mV, low overpotential of similar to 125 mV at 10 mA cm(-2) and an extraordinary small Tafel slope of 34 mV dec(-1), which is nearly identical to that of bulk platinum (Pt), "the gold benchmark" for hydrogen production. Moreover, the strong interactions between MoS2 nanoflakes and guar gum enable MoS2/CF-750 long-term stability and microstructural integrity, presenting nearly 100% activity retention after 2000 cycles and similar to 95% after 16 h of chronoamperometry assessment (0.15 V). The preparation strategy is simple, inexpensive, and readily scalable, and could be extended to diverse 3D non-noble metal electrocatalysts.

Abstract:MoS2/C nanocomposite has been successfully synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method with citrate ammonium as carbon source. The obtained samples are well characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM),energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), Raman spectroscopy, thermo gravimetric analyzer (TG) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Moreover, they are also evaluated as electro-chemical catalysts in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The results indicate that numerous ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets which are characteristic of few layers (1-3 layers) and abundant exposed active edges and defects are well-dispersed in the amorphous carbon network to form MoS2/C composite. As a consequence, the desirable microstructures endow the resultant MoS2/C composite with significantly enhanced catalytic activity for HER such as more positive onset potential, larger current density as well as smaller Tafel slope of 64 mV dec (1) in comparison with the bare MoS2. Abstract:In this paper, we report a facile method for the synthesis of MoS2 nanosheet/ MoS2 nanowire homostructures by growing MoS2 nanosheets on the surface of MoS2 nanowires. Benefiting from the uniform coating of MoS2 nanosheets on the surface of MoS2 nanowires, the MoS2 nanosheet/ MoS2 nanowire homostructures highly expose their electrocatalytic active edge sites and exhibit an enhanced electrocatalytic performance. It demonstrates a low overpotential of 107 mV at 10 mA/cm(2) and a small Tafel slope of 64 mV/dec in 0.5 M H2SO4. This work provides an inspiration for the design of efficient electrocatalysts with no stacking and aggregation structure.

Abstract:Transitional metal sulfide ultrathin structures present various advantageous functional properties and hold great promise in energy conversion reactions, but their facile and large-scale preparation are still challenging. Herein, a facile strategy is developed for the preparation of ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets via an organic matrix-facilitated deposition followed by ultrasonic exfoliation strategy. MoS2 nanosheets with lateral dimensions around 100 nm and thickness around 10–20 nm are facilely obtained. They present the typical multiple absorbance indicating the unique band structure characteristics of MoS2 2D nanosheets. Furthermore, the electronic structures of the ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets can be tuned via controlling their immediate environment in assemblies. In the layer-by-layer interfacial assemblies of (PEDOT:PSS/MoS2)n multilayers, the catalytic efficiency of MoS2 nanosheets is enhanced by a charge transfer process as corroborated by DFT simulation. The catalytic capabilities of the assemblies are optimized by the well-controlled layer-by-layer process and present effective and stable electrochemical HER properties. We expect that this fabrication strategy of 2D MoS2 nanosheets promote the research of functional materials based on MoS2 nanosheets and can be extended to the preparation of other nanosheet materials.

Abstract:Two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides are affordable alternatives to noble metal catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Here, we report a facile one-step solvothermal method to synthesize the 1T MoS2 hierarchical nanosphere (NSP) that can function as an efficient and stable electrocatalyst for HER using an environment-friendly solvent without the assistance of a template or additive. The reaction solvent is found to play a vital role in regulating the morphology and phase of the resultant MoS2. A haystack of 2H MoS2 nanosheets is obtained when water is used as the solvent, and the 1T MoS2 NSP is attained when ethanol is used. The 1T MoS2 NSP has a three-dimensional hierarchical structure and good conductivity, which lead to the excellent electrocatalytic HER performance in an acid solution with its overpotential lower than the reported MoS2-based electrocatalysts. It also demonstrates exceptional electrochemical stability, showing little variation in overpotential for 5000 reaction cycles.

Controllable Nanoscale Engineering of Vertically Aligned MoS2 Ultrathin Nanosheets by Nitrogen Doping of 3D Graphene Hydrogel for Improved Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) porous molybdenum disulfide/nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide (MoS2/N-rGO) hydrogels were fabricated through a facile and controllable one-pot hydrothermal method. The nanosized MoS2 ultrathin nanosheets were uniformly and vertically dispersed on the rGO framework after nitrogen incorporation. The incorporated nitrogen in rGO played a key role for nano-scaling of MoS2 due to the protonation at pyridinic N-doping sites on carbon surface. The vertically aligned edge of nanosized MoS2 sheets, nitrogen incorporation of rGO and 3D network structure made the MoS2/N-rGO highly efficient for hydrogen evolution reaction, with improved double-layer capacitance and turnover frequency, small onset overpotential of 119 mV, low Tafel slope of 36 mV center dot olecade(-1) and superior longtime catalytic stability.
