Abstract:Supramolecular polymers are polymeric arrays of monomeric units that held together by highly directional and reversible noncovalent interactions, resulting in polymeric properties in solution and bulk. Due to the dynamic nature of noncovalent interactions, supramolecular polymers display fascinating properties such as reversibility, adaptiveness, self-healing, and stimuli-responsiveness, which are different from their covalent counterparts. These attributes have endowed supramolecular polymers with great potential applications in the field of functional materials, and also have motivated chemists to construct a variety of supramolecular polymers and supramolecular polymeric materials. In conventional supramolecular polymerization, bifunctional covalent monomers should be first synthesized and then supramolecularly polymerized. In contrast, we have proposed a new method for constructing supramolecular polymers by covalent polymerization of supramonomers. Bifunctional supramonomers are first fabricated through noncovalent interactions and then subjected to covalent polymerization. The driving forces for the fabrication of supramonomers are multiple hydrogen bonds, host-guest interactions, and others. This feature article is aimed to summarize the ways for covalent polymerization of supramonomers, including click polymerization and enzyme-triggered condensation of supramonomers based on the host-guest interactions of cucurbit[8]uril and tripeptide Phe-Gly-Gly derivatives, photo-triggered cycloaddition of anthracene end-capped supramonomers driven by pillar[5] arene based host-guest interactions, and olefin metathesis polymerization of quadruple hydrogen bonded supramonomers. The advantage of the covalent polymerization of supramonomers is to transfer a not-easy tractable supramolecular polymerization to an easy tractable covalent polymerization. We envision that more noncovalent interactions with higher binding affinity could be used to drive the formation of supramonomers; and more controlled covalent reactions with higher efficiency and milder reaction conditions could be used in the covalent polymerization of supramonomers. By utilizing this method, the controllable fabrication of supramolecular polymers could be realized, which is vital to the study of structure-property relationship of supramolecular polymers, as well as to the design and the construction of functional supramolecular polymers.

Abstract:Supramolecular polymerization and supramolecular polymeric materials have attracted a great deal of attention over the past three decades. Traditional methods for fabricating supramolecular polymers and materials mainly focus on the self-assembly of building units, including the noncovalent polymerization of covalent monomers and the noncovalent cross-linking of linear polymers. Lately, we come up with a novel concept of supramonomer, which refers to a monomer that is fabricated by noncovalent interactions and is able to undergo covalent polymerization or noncovalent polymerization. Since then, plenty of supramolecular polymers and supramolecular polymeric materials have been successfully constructed through the polymerization of supramonomers. In this trend article, we will introduce the recent progress of supramolecular polymerization and supramolecular polymeric materials based on supramonomers. Firstly, we will focus on controllable supramolecular polymerization, including controllable covalent polymerization and promoted noncovalent polymerization. Secondly, we will summarize renewable supramolecular polymeric materials on the basis of supramonomers, including degradable materials, self-healing materials, and recyclable materials. It is highly anticipated that this trend article will enrich the methodology of supramolecular polymerization and open new avenues for fabricating supramolecular polymeric materials with tailor-made properties.

Abstract:We have fabricated a series of supramolecular polymers with tailor-made structures and properties through supramolecular interfacial polymerization of miscible monomers. Compared with homogeneous solution polymerization, supramolecular interfacial polymerization is advantageous for fabricating supramolecular polymers with higher molecular weights. Their higher molecular weights are attributed to the higher effective concentration of monomers at the interface than in solutions and diffusion-limited characteristic of supramolecular interfacial polymerization. Moreover, the glass transition temperatures of supramolecular polymers are well tuned by tuning the monomer structures and supra molecular interfacial copolymerization. It is anticipated that this research will further enrich the methodology for fabricating supramolecular polymers with controlled structures and properties through supramolecular interfacial polymerization.

Abstract:A new method of supramolecular polymerization at the water-oil interface is developed. As a demonstration, an oil-soluble supramonomer containing two thiol end groups linked by two ureidopyrimidinone units and a water-soluble monomer bearing two maleimide end groups are employed. Supramolecular interfacial polymerization can be implemented by a thiol-maleimide click reaction at the water-chloroform interface to obtain supramolecular polymeric films. The glass transition temperature of such supramolecular polymers can be well-tuned by simply changing the polymerization time and temperature. It is highly anticipated that this work will provide a facile and general approach to realize control over supramolecular polymerization by transferring the preparation of supramolecular polymers from solutions to water-oil interfaces and construct supramolecular materials with well-defined properties.

Abstract:Supramolecular polymers have attracted plenty of interest in the scientific community; however, developing controllable methods of supramolecular polymerization remains a serious challenge. This article reviews some recent developments of methods for supramolecular polymerization from controllable fabrication to living polymerization. Three facile methods with general applicability for controllable fabrication of supramolecular polymers have been established recently: the first method is a self-sorting approach by manipulating ring-chain equilibrium based on noncovalent control over rigidity of monomers; the second is covalent polymerization from supramonomers formed by noncovalent interactions; and the third is supramolecular interfacial polymerization. More excitingly, living supramolecular polymerization has been achieved by two elegant strategies, including seeded supramolecular polymerization under pathway complexity control and chaingrowth supramolecular polymerization by metastable monomers. It is anticipated that this review may provide some guidance for precise fabrication of supramolecular polymers, leading to the construction of supramolecular polymeric materials with controllable architectures and functions.

Abstract:Supramonomers refer to monomers fabricated via noncovalent interactions and can be polymerized through conventional covalent methods. In this article, we realized the fabrication of cross-linked supramolecular polymers through photo-initiated thiol-ene click reaction of quadruple hydrogen bonded supramonomers. It is found that the cross-linked supramolecular polymer has a higher critical polymerization concentration than the linear supramolecular polymer, because the orientation of the trifunctional monomer leads to cyclize at low concentrations. It is anticipated that this research can enrich the methodology of fabricating cross-linked supramolecular polymers and provide a new phenomenon to understand the self-assembling behavior of cross-linked supramolecular polymers. Abstract:Supramolecular polymers, originating from the interplay between polymer science and supramolecular chemistry, have attracted increasing interest in the scientific and industrial communities. To date, most supramolecular polymers are constructed in homogeneous solutions. Supramolecular polymerization normally takes place spontaneously in solutions, thus creating challenges in fabricating supramolecular polymers in a controlled manner. By combining supramolecular polymerization and interfacial polymerization, supramolecular polymerization can be transferred from homogeneous solutions to interfaces, which allows for the controlled production of supramolecular polymers. In this Perspective, we will summarize recent progress and the advantages in supramolecular polymerization at solid-liquid and liquid-liquid interfaces. Meanwhile, current challenges and opportunities in the field of supramolecular polymerization at interfaces are proposed and discussed. It is anticipated that this Perspective will inspire supramolecular polymerization at interfaces and facilitate the construction of supramolecular polymeric materials with diverse architectures and tailor-made functions.

It is an interdisciplinary direction of polymer science and supramolecular science. In contrast with conventional polymers on the basis of covalent bond, supramolecular polymers have drawn increasing attention because of many fascinating properties such as reversibility, adaptiveness, self-healing, and stimuli-responsiveness owing to the dynamic nature of noncovalent interactions. These attributes have endowed supramolecular polymers with great potential applications in the field of functional materials, and also have motivated chemists to construct a variety of supramolecular polymers and supramolecular polymeric materials. The fabrication of supramolecular polymers and the investigation of functional supramolecular polymers have been a topic of great interest for the scientific communities in China in recent years. This review article is aimed to summarize some research progresses on supramolecular polymers in China, including the design of building blocks and driving forces for the fabrication of supramolecular polymers with high molecular weight, construction of supramolecular polymers with various topologies, new methods for controllable supramolecular polymerization, and functional supramolecular polymers. The characteristics, advantages, and potential applications of supramolecular polymers, as well as the comparisons of the structure and properties between the covalent polymers and the supramolecular polymers are also discussed. Although polymer science on the basis of covalent bond has been and will still be the core science in the polymer community, supramolecular polymers based on noncovalent interactions are complementary to traditional polymer science and represent new growth point by marrying supramolecular science with polymer science. Last but not least, with the aim to push forward the studies on supramolecular polymers, more attention should be paid to developing and enriching supramolecular polymer chemistry and physics, the methods for their characterization and special supramolecular polymers with tailor-made molecular architectures and functions.

Abstract:Supramolecular polymers are, in broad brushstrokes, self-assembled structures built up from small building blocks via the use of noncovalent interactions. In favorable cases, supramolecular polymers embody the best features of covalent polymers while displaying unique reversibility, responsiveness, adaptiveness, and stability. This has made them of interest across a wide variety of fields, from molecular devices to sensors, drug delivery, cell recognition, and environmentally friendly materials systems. This review is concerned with the determinants that underlie supramolecular polymer construction, specifically the driving forces that have been exploited to create them. To date, nearly the full range of known noncovalent interactions ( e.g. , hydrogen-bonding, electrostatic interactions, charge transfer effects, and metal coordination, among others) has been exploited to create supramolecular polymers. Typically, one or more types of interactions is used to link appropriately designed monomers. The choice of noncovalent interaction can have a significant influence on the structure and function of the resulting supramolecular polymers. Understanding the connections between the forces responsible for the assembly of supramolecular polymers and their properties provides the foundation for further advances in this fast-moving field. Given the above, this review will the discuss recent progress in the rapidly advancing field of supramolecular polymers organized by the types of underlying interactions. An overview of future challenges and opportunities for supramolecular polymers, including their formation, characterization, and applications, is also provided.

Abstract:A multi-responsive supramolecular polymer, beta-CD-(PNIPAAm)(4)-Azo-(PMAA)(7), is demonstrated here. This amphiphilic polymer can be achieved by altering the pH or temperature of a solution of the supramolecular polymer system. Absorption and emission spectroscopy, solution transmittance, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were applied. It was found that beta-CD-(PNIPAAm)(4)-Azo-(PMAA)(7) can self-assemble into inverse spherical polymeric nanoaggregates and can then disassemble reversibly under the irradiation of UV light due to the trans-to-cis isomerization of the azo groups. The resulting supramolecular polymer is demonstrated to have useful properties, including self-aggregation, supramolecular gelation and stimulus-responsive behavior.

Abstract:This letter describes a new method for fabricating supramolecular microgels from supramonomers. To this end, we designed and assembled supramonomers with one acrylate moiety on each end on the basis of noncovalent host-guest interactions, which could be utilized as a cross-linker. Then supramolecular microgels were fabricated through the copolymerization of supramonomers and N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAm). The supramolecular microgels not only showed temperature-responsive properties as expected from conventional PNIPAm-based microgels but also exhibited stimuli-responsive and degradable properties benefiting from the dynamic nature of supramonomers. In addition, it was found that the degradation kinetics of the supramolecular microgels was related greatly to the structure of the microgels, providing a way to tune the degradation kinetics of the supramolecular microgels. Various supramolecular microgels with desired structure and function are supposed to be facilely fabricated from supramonomers. It is anticipated that the supramolecular microgels can enrich the application of microgels by easily endowing the microgels with stimuli-responsive and degradable properties.

Abstract:The precise sequence control of polymer chain is an important research topic of polymer chemistry. Although some methods such as iterative synthesis and supramolecular polymerization have been developed to fabricate sequence-controllable polymer, it is still a great challenge to consecutively prepare multiple supramolecular polymers with different sequence structures. In this work, through the reasonable utilization of assembly motifs, we integrated multiple host-guest recognitions and metal coordination interactions to prepare different sequence-controlled supramolecular polymers by a multistep assembly strategy. This research provides inspiration for the design and preparation of supramolecular polymers with different sequence structures.
