Abstract:Two mononuclear complexes [M(DQ)(OTf)](OTf)center dot H2O (M = Co for 1 and Fe for 2, DQ = 6,6 ''-di(quinolin-8-yl)-4 '-phenyl-2,2 ':6 ',2 ''-terpyridine) with distorted trigonal prismatic geometry have been synthesized and characterized. Crystal structures show that the 3d ions are helically coordinated by a pentadentate DQ and encapsulated by a terminal OTf- anion, resulting in [MN5O] coordination environments. Magnetic measurements and ab initio calculation indicate that complex 1 displays easy axis anisotropy and exhibits field-induced slow magnetic relaxation which is dominated by Raman and direct processes. For 2, no slow magnetic relaxation had been recorded owing to the significant fast quantum tunneling of magnetization.

Abstract:Multiferroicity and magnetodielectric coupling in metal-organic-frameworks (MOFs) is rare and so far restricted mainly to formate-based systems with perovskite structure. In the course of this work we designed a tetragonal framework [Co(C16H15N5O2)], exhibiting spin-chains of Co2+ ions, which are bridged by an organic linker containing a dipolar nitrobenzene moiety. This compound shows relaxor-like ferroelectricity at 100 K, which is followed by the onset of complex magnetic order at 15 K, indicative of weak ferromagnetism. The clear anomaly of the dielectric constant at the magnetic ordering transition indicates magnetodielectric coupling, which is also confirmed by magnetic-field dependent dielectric measurements. Weak ferromagnetism and magnetodielectric coupling, both probably result from a significant Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, which cants the spin structure and locally breaks inversion symmetry. We document that the introduction of dipolar nitrobenzene as building block in the crystal structure paths the way to design new multiferroic and magnetodielectric MOFs.

Abstract:One coordination polymer {[Dy(BTTA)1.5(H2O)4.5]n (Dy-1) was successfully obtained via solvo-thermal reaction of Dy(NO3)3⋅6H2O and 2,5-bis-(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)terephthalic acid (H2BTTA). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis shows that the complex exhibits two-dimensional lay-by-lay structure with one-dimensional channels along b direction, while DyIII ion exhibited as distorted spherical capped square antiprism (C4v) finished by nine oxygen atoms from three BTTA ligands and five water molecules. Magnetic studies show that both of the Orbach and Raman processes contribute to the magnetic relaxation behavior of Dy-1 under low temperature.

Abstract:Metal-organic framework (MOF) materials play an important role in coordination chemistry. Here, we report the synthesis, structure, and magnetic properties of a Co(II)-based MOF [Co-(dps)2Cl2]n (1). Single-crystal diffraction analysis reveals that compound 1 has a two-dimensional (2D) layered structure. The magnetic properties studies indicate that compound 1 shows easy-plane anisotropy with positive D value, which is further proved by high-field electron paramagnetic resonance (HF-EPR). AC susceptibility measurements show that compound 1 is field-induced SMM governed by single Co(II) ion. The magnetic properties studies indicate that coordinate halogens have almost no effect on the slow magnetic relaxation time and effective energy barrier. However, the secondary coordination environment of packing pattern has a significant effect on the slow relaxation.

Abstract:A novel two-dimensional dysprosium(III) complex, [Dy(L)(CH3COO)]·0.5DMF·H2O·2CH3OH (1), has been successfully synthesized from a new pyridine-N-oxide (PNO)-containing ligand, namely, N'-(2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidene)pyridine-N-oxidecarbohydrazide (H2L). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies reveal that complex 1 is composed of a dinuclear dysprosium subunit, which is further extended by the PNO part of the ligand to form a two-dimensional layer. Magnetic studies indicate that complex 1 shows well-defined temperature- and frequency-dependent signals under a zero direct-current (dc) field, typical of slow magnetic relaxation with an effective energy barrier Ueff of 33.6 K under a zero dc field. Interestingly, powder X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis reveal that compound 1 undergoes a reversible phase transition that is induced by the desorption and absorption of methanol and water molecules. Moreover, the desolvated sample [Dy(L)(CH3COO)]·0.5DMF (1a) also exhibits slow magnetic relaxation but with a higher anisotropic barrier of 42.0 K, indicating the tuning effect of solvent molecules on slow magnetic relaxation.

Abstract:We report the synthesis and crystal structures of four dinuclear dysprosium(III) complexes with the general formula (Dy2L2 x Y2) (1–4) based on the association of various flexible benzothiazolyl ligands and β-diketonate ligands [(Dy2L2 x Z2) (x = 1, 3 with Z = 1,3-diphenyl-1,3-propanedionate (dphac); x = 2, 4 with Z = hexafluoroacetylacetonate (hfac)]. While these complexes share similar dinuclear cores, magnetic investigations, in line with theoretical calculations, reveal a zero-field slow relaxation of the magnetization for all complexes, albeit different relaxation dynamics. Although the Dy3+ single-ion anisotropy is mainly driving the relaxation, the observed intramolecular ferromagnetic interactions shortcut the quantum tunneling of the magnetization.

Abstract:Abstract The development of two-dimensional (2D) magnetic semiconductors with room-temperature ferromagnetism is a significant challenge in materials science and is important for the development of next-generation spintronic devices. Herein, we demonstrate that a 2D semiconducting antiferromagnetic Cu-MOF can be endowed with intrinsic room-temperature ferromagnetic coupling using a ligand cleavage strategy to regulate the inner magnetic interaction within the Cu dimers. Using the element-selective X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) technique, we provide unambiguous evidence for intrinsic ferromagnetism. Exhaustive structural characterizations confirm that the change of magnetic coupling is caused by the increased distance between Cu atoms within a Cu dimer. Theoretical calculations reveal that the ferromagnetic coupling is enhanced with the increased Cu-Cu distance, which depresses the hybridization between 3 d orbitals of nearest Cu atoms. Our work provides an effective avenue to design and fabricate MOF-based semiconducting room-temperature ferromagnetic materials and promotes their practical applications in next-generation spintronic devices.

Abstract:As a prototype of organic–inorganic hybrid compounds, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted enormous interest for their diverse physical and chemical properties. Recently, the magnetic and electric properties of MOFs have started to draw much attention. In particular, the coexistence of multiple orders (magnetic, electric, and elastic) in some MOFs makes them as emerging multiferroic materials. In terms of the strong and tunable ferroelectricity, the long-distance superexchange interaction, the order–disorder transition of hydrogen bonds in combination with the structural flexibility, and multiferroic MOFs represent a unique family beyond conventional inorganic multiferroics. This perspective provides a brief overview of recent progress in the field of multiferroic MOFs. First, the multiferroic MOFs reported so far are summarized and classified. Then, various cross coupling effects, i.e., the magnetic field control of electric polarization, electric field manipulation of magnetization, and pressure tuning of magnetic and electric properties, are described and discussed. In addition, a number of unusual phenomena such as the giant thermal expansion and quantum effects are introduced. Finally, some promising topics that have not yet been fully explored in multiferroic MOFs are proposed.

Abstract:The metal-organic framework Fe2(dobdc) (dobdc(4-) = 2,5-dioxido-1,4-benzenedicarboxylate), often referred to as Fe-MOF-74, possesses many interesting properties such as a high selectivity in olefin/paraffin separations. This compound contains open-shell Fe(II) ions with open coordination sites which may have large single-ion magnetic anisotropies, as well as isotropic couplings between the nearest and next nearest neighbor magnetic sites. To complement a previous analysis of experimental data made by considering only isotropic couplings [Bloch et al. Science 2012, 335, 1606], the magnitude of the main magnetic interactions are here assessed with quantum chemical calculations performed on a finite size cluster. It is shown that the single-ion anisotropy is governed by same-spin spin-orbit interactions (i.e., weak crystal-field regime), and that this effect is not negligible compared to the nearest neighbor isotropic couplings. Additional magnetic data reveal a metamagnetic behavior at low temperature. This effect can be attributed to various microscopic interactions, and the most probable scenarios are discussed.

Abstract:The synthesis and whole characterization by a multitechnique approach of an unprecedented dysprosium (III) 2D metal organic framework (MOF), involving the redox-active tetrathiafulvalene (TTF)-based linker TTF-tetracarboxylate (TTF-TC), are herein reported. The single-crystal X-ray structure, formulated as [Dy 6 (TTF-TC) 5 (H 2 O) 22 ]·21H 2 O ( 1 ), reveals a complex 2D topology, with hexanuclear Dy 6 clusters as secondary building units (SBUs) interconnected by five linkers, stacked almost parallel in each layer and eclipsed along the [111] direction, leading to the formation of 1D channels filled by water molecules. Mixed valence of the TTF units is confirmed by both bond distances analysis, Raman Microscopy and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and further supported by band structure calculations, which also predict activated conductivity for this material. Thanks to efficient TTF stacking and partial oxidation, 1 shows semiconducting behavior, with, however, a record conductivity value of 1 mS cm –1 at room temperature, when compared to the previously reported TTF-based MOFs. Furthermore, temperature and magnetic field dependent ac (alternative current) magnetic susceptibility measurements demonstrate field induced slow relaxation of magnetization, accounting for two independent relaxation processes, with an energy barrier (U eff /K) of around 12 K, typical for dysprosium carboxylate complexes. The herein reported 2D Dy-MOF provides a valuable master plan for coexistence of conducting π-TTF stacks and highly anisotropic Dy III SMM properties.

Abstract:By utilizing the 2-hydroxyisophthalic acid (H3ipO) ligand, 2D metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) featuring rare Ophenol-bridged [Ln2]-magnetic building blocks (MBBs), [Ln2(ipO)2(DMF)(H2O)] [Ln = Gd (1), Dy (2); DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide], were rationally designed and synthesized. When the reaction solvents that behave as terminal ligands were changed, the coordination geometries of LnIII ions and the arrangement fashion of [Ln2]-MBBs for these MOFs were modified accordingly. Another type of 2D MOF of [Ln2(ipO)2(H2O)4]·2H2O [Ln = Gd (3), Dy (4)] was thus obtained. MOFs 1 and 3 exhibited favorable magnetocaloric effect, whose maximum −ΔSm values reach 30.0 and 31.7 J kg–1 K–1, respectively. None of the single-molecule-magnet (SMM) behavior was observed in 2. However, from 2 to 4, the change of the terminal coordinated solvents brought obvious improvement of the magnetic properties. MOF 4 showed interesting relaxation behavior, in which dual relaxation was only visible under weak direct-current fields, and its highest effective energy barrier (Ueff) reached up to 243 K. Ab initio calculations revealed the tuning mechanism of the terminal coordinated solvents. Their change optimized the arrangements of the magnetic axis of the DyIII centers in both each MBB and the whole framework, thus improving the magnetic anisotropy and magnetic interactions of the system. Significantly, within the [Dy2]-MBBs of 4, the angle made by the individual magnetic axis and Dy···Dy′ line is nearly 0°. Abstract:Two metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), [Dy(BDC)(NO3)(DMF)2] n (1, H2BDC = terephthalic acid) and [Dy(BDC)(NO3)] n (1a), were synthesized. The structures of MOFs 1 and 1a are easy to be reversibly transformed into each other by the desorption or adsorption of coordination solvent molecules. Accordingly, their magnetic properties can also be changed reversibly, which realizes our goals of manipulating on/off single-molecule magnet behaviour. MOF 1 behaves as a single-molecule magnet either with or without DC field. Contrarily, no slow magnetic relaxation was observed in 1a both under zero field and applied field.

Abstract:In metal-organic-framework (MOF) perovskites, both magnetic and ferroelectric orderings can be readily realized by compounding spin and charge degrees of freedom. The hydrogen bonds that bridge the magnetic framework and organic molecules have long been thought of as a key in generating multiferroic properties. However, the underlying physical mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we combine neutron diffraction, quasielastic and inelastic neutron scattering, and THz spectroscopy techniques to thoroughly investigate the dynamical properties of the multiferroic MOF candidate [CH3NH3][Co(HCOO)3] through its multiple phase transitions. The wide range of energy resolutions reachable by these techniques enables us to scrutinize the coupling between the molecules and the framework throughout the phase transitions and interrogate a possible magnetoelectric coupling. Our results also reveal a structural change around 220 K, which may be associated with the activation of a nodding donkey mode of the methylammonium molecule due to the ordering of the CH3 groups. Upon the occurrence of the modulated phase transition around 130 K, the methylammonium molecule undergoes a freezing of its reorientational motions, which is concomitant with a change of the lattice parameters and anomalies of collective lattice vibrations. Abstract:A well-defined two-step relaxation, described by the sum of two modified Debye functions, is observed in a new alkoxido-bridged linear tetranuclear Dy-III aggregate showing single-molecule magnet behavior with a remarkably large energy barrier. This compound represents a model molecular aggregate with a clear two-step relaxation evidenced by frequency-dependent susceptibility, which therefore may stimulate further investigations regarding the relaxation dynamics of lanthanide-based systems.

Abstract:Two cobalt(II) metal-organic frameworks with 2-fold vertically interpenetrated (4,4) grids, namely, [Co(bpg)(2)(SCN)(2)]center dot 3MeOH (1) and [Co(bpg)(2)(SCN)(2)]center dot 2DMF (2) (bpg = meso-alpha,beta-bi(4-pyridyl) glycol), were prepared under different conditions. The two complexes crystallize in different space groups (orthorhombic Pccn for 1, and tetragonal (P) over bar 42(1)c for 2) with different guest molecules. Although their structures are very similar, different guest molecules subtly change the coordination environments of the Co-II centers, the intergrid supramolecular interactions (hydrogen bond), and the dihedral angles of those two sets of interpenetrated grids. Magnetically, these modifications of the structures lead to the changes on their magnetism, especially the dynamic magnetic properties at low temperatures. Both compounds exhibit slow magnetic relaxation under an external field. For 1, we could not observe the peak maxima of the ac susceptibilities in our magnetometer at the lowest temperature and highest frequency because the relaxation time is never slow enough. In contrast for compound 2, the estimated energy barrier is significantly higher than that of 1, leading to much slower magnetic relaxation. The difference of magnetic properties between 1 and 2 illustrates the role of the metal-organic frameworks on the development of the tunable single-ion magnets and the prominent guest effect in the MOF based SIMs.
Structures and Magnetic Properties of Dysprosium Complexes: the Effect of Crystallization Temperature.

Abstract:Two new dysprosium complexes, [Dy(H5L)(NO3)2(CH3OH)2]·4CH3OH (1) and [Dy2(H5L)2(NO3)4(H2O)2]·10CH3OH (2), were isolated from the reaction of a novel 1,8-naphthalenediol-based ligand N,N'-((1,8-dihydroxynaphthalene-2,7-diyl)bis(methanylylidene))bis(2-hydroxybenzohydrazide), H6L with dysprosium(iii) nitrate upon crystallization at different temperatures. Because of a low-symmetrical coordination environment, both complexes display only field-induced single molecular magnetic (SMM) behavior. Interestingly, complex 2 containing two dysprosium ions shows field-induced multiple relaxation processes, whereas only one relaxation process is observed for complex 1. The remarkably different behavior observed in 2 is mainly ascribed to the weak intra- or intermolecular interactions between the two DyIII centres in this complex.
