Abstract:Electrode materials for supercapacitors with one-dimensional porous nanostructures, such as nanowires and nanotubes, are very attractive for high-efficiency storage of electrochemical energy. Herein, ultralong Cu-based porous coordination polymer nanowires (copper-L-aspartic acid) were used as the electrode material for supercapacitors, for the first time. The as-prepared material exhibits a high specific capacitance of 367 F g(-1) at 0.6 A g(-1) and excellent cycling stability (94% retention over 1000 cycles). Moreover, porous CuO nanotubes were successfully fabricated by the thermal decomposition of this nanowire precursor. The CuO nanotube exhibits good electrochemical performance with high rate capacity (77% retention at 12.5 A g(-1)) and long-term stability (96% retention over 1000 cycles). The strategy developed here for the synthesis of porous nanowires and nanotubes can be extended to the construction of other electrode materials for more efficient energy storage.
Polyaniline Nanowire Electrodes with High Capacitance Synthesized by a Simple Approach

Abstract:Polyaniline (PANI) nanowire electrodes were successfully synthesized by electrodeposition using starch as template. The electrodes were characterized with scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction technique. SEM images showed that the electrodes electrodeposited using the starch template had nanowire morphology, but the PANI electrodeposited in absent solution had agglomerate block morphology. Cyclic voltammograms at different scan rates and charge-discharge tests were performed in 0.5 M H2SO4 aqueous solution. The PANI nanowire electrodes had a high capacitance (882 F g(-1)) and a high stability (5% capacity loss after 500 cycles).

Abstract:In this paper, the effects of carboxylic substituent position on their electrodeposition, morphology and capacitance properties were investigated for the first time. The results indicated that three carboxylic group substituted polyindole derivatives nanowires, namely poly(indole-5-carboxylic acid) (5-PICA), poly(indole-6-carboxylic acid) (6-PICA), and poly(indole-7-carboxylic acid) (7-PICA), were successfully electrochemically synthesized in acetonitrile containing 0.1 M LiClO4, whereas poly(indole-4-carboxylic acid) (4-PICA) was difficult to be obtained. For 5-PICA, 6-PICA and 7-PICA nanowires, the diameters of nanowires demonstrated by the scanning electron microscopy were about 100 nm, 50 nm, and 30 nm, respectively. Their specific capacitances and energy densities in 1.0 M H2SO4 solution were measured to be 355 F g(-1), 383 F g(-1), 430 F g(-1) at 2.5 A g(-1) and 40.0, 43.1, 48.3 Wh kg(-1) at a power density of 1125 W kg(-1), respectively, and their specific capacitance retentions after 1000 charge/discharge processes reached 94.5%, 95.1%, and 96%, respectively. These results indicated that the position of the carboxylic substituent had remarkable impacts on the diameter sizes and electrochemical properties of these polymer nanowires. Furthermore, the three polymers with high specific capacitance and excellent stability would be strong candidates as electrode material for supercapacitors. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:The combination of a vertically aligned carbon nanotube array (CNTA) framework and electrodeposition technique leads to a tube-covering-tube nanostructured polyaniline (PANI)/CNTA composite electrode with hierarchical porous structure, large surface area, and superior conductivity. PANI/CNTA composite electrode has high specific capacitance (1030Fg−1), superior rate capability (95% capacity retention at 118Ag−1), and high stability (5.5% capacity loss after 5000 cycles). Energy storage characteristics of the PANI/CNTA composite are presented in this paper.

Abstract:Polyindoles belonging to the fused-ring family have attracted extensive investigation as promising materials due to their unique physical and electrochemical properties. Herein, poly(7-formylindole) (PFIn) film was firstly synthesized electrochemically on carbon fibers by direct anodic oxidation of 7-formylindole in acetonitrile solution containing 0.1 M LiCIO4. FT-lit spectra indicated that the polymerization site of monomer happened at the C-2 and C-3 positions of indole ring. The morphology of PFIn film on carbon fibers was investigated through SEM observation, which indicated that PFIn film tightly wrapped over carbon fibers (PFIn/CF). Electrochemical results indicated that PFIn/CF electrode showed a remarkable specific capacitance of 637 F g(-1) at 20 A g(-1). The energy density reached about 42 Wh kg(-1) at a high power density of 21 kW kg(-1). Furthermore, PFIn/CF still maintained about 74.1% of initial specific capacitance and 100% coulombic efficiency after 1000 cycles. These results revealed that PFIn/CF was a promising electrode material for the flexible supercapacitors application.

Abstract:A stepwise deposition method was employed to create ordered polyaniline (PANI) nanowires with remarkably enhanced capacitance. Cyclic voltammetry, AC impedance, and galvanostatic charge/discharge cycling were employed to investigate the electrochemical performance of the PANI electrodes. The PANI-deposited electrode exhibits much higher capacitance than those prepared by one-step deposition method, which were mainly contributed from the unique nano structure of PANI and the increased biological, economical, and technical surface areas. The superior capacitive behaviors of the nano PANI electrodes show great potential in preparation of high efficient electrochemical capacitors or rechargeable batteries.

Abstract:Polyindole (Pind) is one of the conducting polymers (CPs) which previously was less studied but of recent is gaining attention for energy storage applications. In all the few previous reports, when Pind was employed as electrode active material in supercapacitors, the capacitance was reported low with reasonable values only being obtained as a composite with other materials. The reasons underlying the poor performance of Pind and Pind nanocomposites are thought to be: 1) inactive morphology and limited surface area, 2) poor conductivity, and 3) poor electrode fabrication techniques. To address the trio, we employed the traditional, easy and scalable electrospinning technique to fabricate high surface area electroactive Pind nanofibers. Further, a little percentage (10 wt.%) of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were added to enhance the conductivity of Pind and to study the effect of our fabrication route on the nanocomposites. Significant capacitance improvements of up to 238 F g(-1) and 476 F g(-1) at 1.0 A g(-1) for Pind and Pind/CNT freestanding electrospun electrodes, respectively were achieved. Moreover, we report the significant performance of the all-solid-state symmetric, flexible and binder-free supercapacitor fabricated by a one-step and scalable method of as-electrospun Pind/CNT nanofibers on the stainless steel fabric current collector. The supercapacitor showed a high energy density of 17.14 W h kg(-1) at a power density of 426 W kg(-1) and capacitance retention of 95% after 2000 cycles. We strongly believe that we have set a stage for Pind to compete in a healthy race with other CPs as a next generation electrode material for supercapacitors. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Polyaniline nanofibres have been prepared without any template or surfactant. Although the morphology of polyaniline is well kept after dealing with aqueous ammonia, de-doped polyaniline nanofibres with micropores are of better electrochemical capacitor performances in 1M H2SO4 aqueous solution. Its specific capacitance is 593Fg−1 at a constant current density of 2.5Ag−1, and can be subjected to charge/discharge over 5000 cycles in the voltage range of 0–0.65V. Moreover, its capacitance retention ratio reaches circa 87% with the current densities increasing from 2.5Ag−1 to 15Ag−1.
Polyaniline Nanowire Array Encapsulated in Titania Nanotubes As a Superior Electrode for Supercapacitors

Abstract:Conducting polymer with 1D nanostructure exhibits excellent electrochemical performances but a poor cyclability that limits its use in supercapacitors. In this work, a novel composite electrode made of polyaniline nanowire-titania nanotube array was synthesized via a simple and inexpensive electrochemical route by electropolymerizing aniline onto an anodized titania nanotube array. The specific capacitance was as high as 732 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1), which remained at 543 F g(-1) when the current density was increased by 20 times. 74% of the maximum energy density (36.6 Wh kg(-1)) was maintained even at a high power density of 6000 W kg(-1). An excellent long cycle life of the electrode was observed with a retention of ∼86% of the initial specific capacitance after 2000 cycles. The good electrochemical performance was attributed to the unique microstructure of the electrode with disordered PANI nanowire arrays encapsulated inside the TiO(2) nanotubes, providing high surface area, fast diffusion path for ions and long-term cycle stability. Such a nanocomposite electrode is attractive for supercapacitor applications.
CNT/Ni Hybrid Nanostructured Arrays: Synthesis and Application As High-Performance Electrode Materials for Pseudocapacitors

Abstract:CNT/Ni hybrid nanostructured arrays (NSAs) are synthesized on a stainless steel substrate through a one-step chemical-vapor-deposition (CVD) method using nullaginite NSAs as starting materials. During the CVD process, the nullaginite NSAs are transformed into Ni NSAs, which can further act as the catalysts to initiate the simultaneous in situ growth of CNTs on their surface, leading to an intriguing three-dimensional (3D) hybrid nanostructure. The resulting ordered CNT/Ni NSAs are highly porous and conductive, which are believed to be quite favorable for electrochemical applications. As a proof-of-concept demonstration of the functions of such a well-designed architecture in energy storage, the CNT/Ni NSAs are tested as the working electrodes of electrochemical capacitors (ECs). After being activated, the composite electrode exhibits both well-defined pseudo-capacitive and electrical double-layer behavior with high areal capacitance (up to ∼0.901 F cm−2), excellent cyclability (nearly 100% capacitance retention after 5000 cycles), and outstanding rate capability. The unique interconnected hybrid structure and virtues inherited from the conductive CNT network and porous NSAs are believed to be responsible for the excellent performance.
Porous Poly(5-Cyanoindole) Electrode with High Capacitance

Abstract:A porous poly (5-cyanoindole) film was easily electrodeposited and for the first time evaluated as an active electrode material in 1.0 M H2SO4. The poly (5-cyanoindole) film was investigated using scanning electron microscope, cyclic voltammetry, impedance spectroscopy and charge-discharge test. The specific capacitance of poly (5-cyanoindole) electrode was 336 F g-1 under the current density of 2.4 A g-1 and decreased by 30% after 1000 cycles, which indicated that poly (5-cyanoindole) electrode had good cycle stability. Additionally, the specific energy of poly (5-cyanoindole) electrode reached 23 Wh kg-1 when the specific power was 190 W kg-1. These results indicated the feasibility of poly (5-cyanoindole) as electrode material for supercapacitors.
D-ribose directed one-step fabrication of modifier-free C/NiCo2O4 nanowires with advanced electrochemical performance

Abstract:A compound electrode of carbonaceous materials and NiCo2O4 is extensively studied because of higher capacitance and better rate capability compared to those of pure NiCo2O4. However, the tedious preparation process, harsh synthesis condition, high consumption, and especially limited electrochemical property by using modifiers hinder its practical application. Herein, modifier-free electrodes (C/NiCo2O4) with various morphologies based on D-ribose are successfully synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal-calcination method. D-ribose concurrently acts as carbon source and structure-directing agent. The structure of NiCo2O4 changes from the nanosheets into nanowires after adding D-ribose. Each element is evenly distributed throughout C/NiCo2O4, significantly improving the electrical conductivity. Furthermore, there is a strong interaction between carbon and NiCo2O4, which keeps the structure stable. Benefiting from the structural characteristics, the C/NiCo2O4 composites display the improved electrochemical performance. Remarkably, the maximum specific capacitance of C/NiCo2O4-2 is 1583.9 F g−1 at 2 A g−1 in 3 M KOH aqueous solution, and it exhibits remarkable rate capability of 1354.8 F g−1 even at 20 A g−1. After 20000 charge-discharge cycles at 20 A g−1, a high capacity retention of 90.6% can be achieved. The C/NiCo2O4-2 is a promising electrode material for supercapacitor. In addition, a dynamic growth mechanism of C/NiCo2O4 under the coordinate bond of metal ions with D-ribose is discussed in the paper.

Abstract:Spinel-structured oxides are promising candidates for supercapacitor electrodes owing to their features of low price and environmental friendliness. However, their large-scale applications are restricted in view of their low energy density and electrical conductivity. In this work, we synthesize wire-like ZnCo2O4 nanomaterials by a facile hydrothermal avenue and a subsequent calcination process. The prepared samples possess a large specific surface area, which is beneficial for increasing active sites and shortening the ion diffusion channels. The as-assembled asymmetric supercapacitor delivers an energy density of 64 Wh kg–1 at 2880 W kg–1. And the capacitance can be maintained at 85% after 10,000 cycles at the current density of 2 A g–1. The device indicates excellent mechanical stability when bending various angles, revealing its potential application in portable energy storage devices.

AQUEOUS DISPERSED POLYANILINE NANO WIRES FOR ELECTRODE MATERIAL OF SUPERCAPACITOR

Abstract:Through pseudo-high dilution technique, the new electrode materials of aqueous dispersed polyaniline nanowires with diameter of 78 similar to 90 nm,18 similar to 30 nm and 16 similar to 25 nm are prepared employing acidic phosphate ester containing one ethylene glycol unit as dopant acid, in which ammonium persulfate, ferric nitrate and ferric chloride are used as oxidant, respectively. Accordingly, electrical conductivities of polyaniline films can reach 18, 32 and 35 S cm (-1), and their surface areas are 65, 70 and 82 m(2) g(-1), respectively. As an eco-friendly active electrode material for supercapacitor,nanofiberous polyaniline can be well dispersed into water. Specific capacitance as high as 110, 140 and 152 F g(-1) at discharge rate of 0.4 A g(-1) from -1 V to 1 V in 1 mol L-1 tetraethylammonium tetrafluoroborate/propylene carbonate solution is obtained, which is affected strongly by the surface area and electrical conductivity and the values increase with the increasing surface area and conductivity. Potyaniline nanowire provides high discharge/charge efficiency above 98%, indicating that nanofibrous polyaniline possesses good electrochemical reversibility and discharge/charge rate-control capability.
Electrochemical Synthesis of Carboxaldehyde Functionalized Polyindole for Highly Efficient Electrochemical Energy Storage

Abstract:Conducting polymers as supercapacitors materials have attracted a lot of attention due to their high charge density, low cost, high flexibility, and good processability. In this work, the electrodeposition of carboxaldehyde substituted indole and the capacitance performance of the prepared conducting polymers are investigated for the first time. The structure and properties of the prepared polymers are characterized by FT-IR, SEM, TGA, XRD, XPS, TEM, BET and electrochemical techniques. The results of the electrochemical test show that the prepared poly (indole-5-carboxaldehyde) (5-PIC), poly (indole-6-carboxaldehyde) (6-PIC) and poly (indole-7-carbox-aldehyde) (7-PIC) possess better thermal stability, morphology and capacitance performance than polyindole (PIn). In particular, 7-PIC exhibits a high specific capacitance of 489 F g- 1 at 2.5 A g- 1 and retains 87 % capacitance after 5000 cycles test. In this work, the effects of carboxaldehyde substitution on the properties of PIn are systematically studied, and a kind of high-performance electrode material for supercapacitor is demonstrated.
Polyaniline nanowires aligned on MOFs-derived nanoporous carbon as high-performance electrodes for supercapacitor

Abstract:Polyaniline, as the pseudocapacitive electrode material, has been extensively studied for supercapacitors. However, their cycling stability is limited by the structural instability arising from large volumetric swelling/shrinking, which has been the main obstacle to their practical applications. Herein, this work reports metal organic frameworks(MOFs)-derived porous carbon frameworks as the substrate and further deposit polyaniline by in situ chemical polymerization. Benefit from the structurally stable MOFs-derived porous carbon frameworks and the uniformly-deposited conducting polyaniline nanowires with controlled lengths, the synthesized MOFs-derived porous carbon/polyaniline hybrid electrode displays a maximum specific capacitance of 534.16 F g−1 at 0.2 A g−1 and a maximum capacitance retention of 211% at 2 A g−1 after 20000 cycles, demonstrating promising applications for pseudocapacitive devices. The assembled semi-solid symmetrical supercapacitors delivers good electrochemical performance (energy density of 9.72 μWh cm−2) and excellent cyclic stability (94.4% at 10000 cycles), which can also power a commercial LED.

Abstract:In this work, graphene–polyaniline nanofiber (G/PANI-F) composite is prepared through a new and one-pot method that includes the reduction of graphene oxide (GO) by aniline and then followed by in-situ polymerization. Aniline plays the two roles in this method: as a chemical reducing agent to reduce GO to graphene and as a monomer to prepare polyaniline nanofiber (PANI-F). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectra, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy are employed to confirm that GO can be reduced by aniline and PANI-F can be deposited on the surface of graphene. The electrochemical properties of G/PANI-F composite electrode are measured by using cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge–discharge test and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The G/PANI-F composite electrode exhibits enhanced specific capacitance of 965Fg−1 at 0.5Ag−1 and the capacity retention is 90% after 2000 cycles.

Abstract:Co3O4 nanowire arrays freely standing on nickel foam are prepared via a template-free growth method, and it is doped by Ag via electrodeposition method (denoted as NWA-Ag/Co3O4 , NWA represents Nanowire Arrays). The morphology of NWA-Ag/Co3O4 is examined by scanning electron microscopy. The phase structure of the NWA-Ag/Co3O4 electrode is characterized by X-ray diffraction spectroscopy. The supercapacitance behavior of the NWA-Ag/Co3O4 electrodes is investigated by cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge/discharge test and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results show that the nanowire arrays densely cover the nickel foam substrate and have diameters around 250 nm. The NWA-Ag/Co3O4 electrodes exhibit a specific capacitance of 1009 F g-1 at a current density of 5 mA cm-2 in 6.0 mol dm-3 KOH electrolyte. The capacitance loss is less than 6.5% after 500 charge/discharge cycles at 10 mA cm-2 and with columbic efficiency higher than 97.5%.

Abstract:Lithium ion capacitors are new energy storage devices combining the complementary features of both electric double‐layer capacitors and lithium ion batteries. A key limitation to this technology is the kinetic imbalance between the Faradaic insertion electrode and capacitive electrode. Here, we demonstrate that the Li3VO4 with low Li‐ion insertion voltage and fast kinetics can be favorably used for lithium ion capacitors. N‐doped carbon‐encapsulated Li3VO4 nanowires are synthesized through a morphology‐inheritance route, displaying a low insertion voltage between 0.2 and 1.0 V, a high reversible capacity of ≈400 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1, excellent rate capability, and long‐term cycling stability. Benefiting from the small nanoparticles, low energy diffusion barrier and highly localized charge‐transfer, the Li3VO4/N‐doped carbon nanowires exhibit a high‐rate pseudocapacitive behavior. A lithium ion capacitor device based on these Li3VO4/N‐doped carbon nanowires delivers a high energy density of 136.4 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 532 W kg−1, revealing the potential for application in high‐performance and long life energy storage devices.
