Abstract:Summary form only given. Strong light-atom interaction is at the heart of atomic, molecular and optical physics; and is also important to quantum optics, quantum computing, nuclear magnetic resonance and laser. When an atom (or two-level system) is illuminated by a coherent beam of photons, it will cyclically absorb photons and re-emit them by stimulated emission, which is called Rabi oscillation. Here we developed a semiclassical framework to model the phenomenon via a self-consistent solution to Maxwell-Schrödinger equations. Different from Maxwell-Bloch equations, the wave function of the atom replacing for the density matrix nonlinearly interacts with the magnetic vector potential under coulomb gauge condition. A well-posed time evolution system derived from light-atom Hamiltonian is numerically solved by finite-difference time-domain method. The developed semiclassical Maxwell-Schrödinger framework could be generalized to model light-exciton interaction in semiconductor nanostructures.
Slow-Light Enhancement of Stimulated Emission of Atomic Systems in Photonic Crystals

Abstract:We demonstrate both theoretically and numerically that slow light can enhance the stimulated emission of four-level atomic systems in photonic crystals. By applying the Bloch-Floquet formalism and the semiclassical physical model of harmonic oscillators coupled to electromagnetic fields, we develop a formalism that relates the group velocity of slow light to the conversion rate between the electric field and atomic potential energy. From our numerical study of the stimulated emission in fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) and nongrating fiber, a ninefold enhancement of stimulated emission is observed in a FBG over the nongrating fiber when pumping at the band edge, while a 20-fold enhancement of is observed when the frequency of the stimulated emission approaches the band edge. Abstract:Simultaneous slow and fast light can be realized all-optically by connecting a four-level closed-loop atom–light interaction scheme to Λ-type electromagnetically induced transparency system. Through manipulation of the relative phase of one of the coupling lights, probe light can be switched among dual-slow light, dual-fast light and simultaneous slow and fast light. A theoretical analysis based on dressed state picture is given.

Abstract:This paper investigates the breaking point between fast- and slow-light in a degenerate two-level atomic system, where fast-light can be converted to slow-light arbitrarily on a single transition line by adjusting the strength of the pumping field. An equivalent incoherent pumping rate is introduced in this simplified theoretical model which exploits the dependence of this feature. The experimental observation is presented as evidence of the breaking point where the injected power is about 0.08 mW.

Abstract:We investigate a singly-charged quantum dot under a strong optical driving field by probing the system with a weak optical field. When the driving field is detuned from the trion transition, the probe absorption spectrum is shifted from the trion resonance as a consequence of the dynamic Stark effect. Simultaneously, a gain sideband is created, resulting from the coherent energy transfer between the optical fields through the quantum dot nonlinearity. As the pump detuning is moved from red to blue, we map out the anticrossing of these two spectral lines. The optical Bloch equations for a stationary two-level atom can be used to describe the numerous spectral features seen in this nano solid state system.

Abstract:Realizing and controlling a long-lived slow light is of fundamental importance in physics and may find applications in quantum router and quantum information processing. In this work, we propose a feasible scheme to realize the slow light in a strontium atom-cavity system, in which the value of group delay can be continuously adjusted within a range of different Zeeman splittings and vacuum Rabi frequencies by varying the applied static magnetic field and the atom number instead of a strong coherent field. In our scheme, the major limitations of the slow-light structure, namely, dispersion and loss, can be effectively resolved, and so our scheme may help to achieve the practical application of slow light relevant to the optical communication network.

Abstract:A Lambda-type atom coupled by a driving light field and an rf field is restudied. It shows that, owing to Autler-Townes splitting caused by the driving light field and the magnetic dipole transition caused by the rf field, the medium shows distinct characteristics and exhibits the simultaneous slow and fast light at two frequencies. This effect can be attained by simply increasing the magnetic field and making its Rabi frequency much stronger than the probe light. Also, slow and fast light can be converted flexibly between two frequencies by phase control of the rf field.
Enhancing Light-Atom Interactions via Atomic Bunching

Abstract:There is a broad interest in enhancing the strength of light-atom interactions to the point where injecting a single photon induces a nonlinear material response. Here, we show theoretically that sub-Doppler-cooled, two-level atoms that are spatially organized by weak optical fields give rise to a nonlinear material response that is greatly enhanced beyond that attainable in a homogeneous gas. Specifically, in the regime where the intensity of the applied optical fields is much less than the off-resonant saturation intensity, we show that the third-order nonlinear susceptibility scales inversely with atomic temperature and, due to this scaling, can be two orders of magnitude larger than that of a homogeneous gas for typical experimental parameters. As a result, we predict that spatially bunched two-level atoms can exhibit single-photon nonlinearities. Our model is valid for all atomic temperature regimes and simultaneously accounts for the back-action of the atoms on the optical fields. Our results agree with previous theoretical and experimental results for light-atom interactions that have considered only a limited range of temperatures. For lattice beams tuned to the low-frequency side of the atomic transition, we find that the nonlinearity transitions from a self-focusing type to a self-defocusing type at a critical intensity. We also show that higher than third-order nonlinear optical susceptibilities are significant in the regime where the dipole potential energy is on the order of the atomic thermal energy. We therefore find that it is crucial to retain high-order nonlinearities to accurately predict interactions of laser fields with spatially organized ultracold atoms. The model presented here is a foundation for modeling low-light-level nonlinear optical processes for ultracold atoms in optical lattices.

Abstract:Slow light is a fascinating physical effect, raising fundamental questions related to our understanding of light-matter interactions as well as offering new possibilities for photonic devices. From the first demonstrations of slow light propagation in ultra-cold atomic gasses, solid-state Ruby and photonic crystal structures, focus has shifted to applications, with slow light offering the ability to enhance and control light-matter interactions. The demonstration of tuneable delay lines, enhanced nonlinearities and spontaneous emission, enlarged spectral sensitivity and increased phase shifts illustrate the possibilities enabled by slow light propagation, with microwave photonics emerging as one of the promising applications. Here, we demonstrate that slow light can be used to control and increase the gain coefficient of an active semiconductor waveguide. The effect was theoretically predicted but not yet experimentally demonstrated. These results show a route towards realizing ultra-compact optical amplifiers for linear and nonlinear applications in integrated photonics and prompts further research into the rich physics of such structures.

Abstract:We theoretically investigated the sub-luminal and super-luminal light propagation by introducing compton scattering and Kerr non-linear effects to a four level atomic system. Slow light propagation is observed at a group index of 3918 in the transparency region. The slow light propagation is tuned to fast light propagation at group index 0.2, using compton scattering angle of . The surperluminality is further enhanced with compton scattering angle at the resonance frequency. Under the Kerr nonlinearity, the slow light propagation at a group index of 3918 is enhanced to fast light propagation at group index of at the resonance frequency. The group index is reduced to in the presence of both Kerr non-linearity and compton scattering. In the presence of compton scattering, the Phase shift at without Kerr nonlinearity is radian and with Kerr nonlinearity its value is radian at resonance frequency. This demonstrate that introducing Kerr effect and compton scattering lead to significant modifications in the phase shift.

Abstract:We investigate electromagnetically induced transparency and slow group velocity of light in ultracold Bose gas with a two-photon Raman process. The properties of electromagnetically induced transparency and light speed can be changed by controlling the atomic interaction. Atomic interaction can be used as a knob to control the optical properties of atomic media. This can be realized in experiment by using the Feshbach resonance technique.

Abstract:A nondegenerate two-photon laser in a cascade three-level atomic system is studied. The difference between the laser and that derived from an effective Hamiltonian is discussed. Photon number distributions about field 1 are presented. The effects of field 2 on field 1 are studied in detail. Field 2 can play a role of gain enhancement or gain reduction for field 1. This is due to two actions of field 2: reducing the population of the intermediate level and changing the detuning really acting upon field 1, which is caused by the ac Stark shift.

Abstract:We study the statistics of photon emission from three-level single molecule systems. The generating function method [Y. Zheng and F. L. H. Brown, Phys. Rev. Lett. 90, 238305 (2003)] is used to calculate steady state absorption line shapes and Mandel’s Q parameter as a function of excitation frequency, as well as the time dependence associated with approach to the steady state. The line shape calculations confirm known results derived via other methods, while the Q parameter results display complex frequency dependences not amenable to simple interpretation. This study confirms the applicability of the generating function formalism to multilevel quantum systems, including the proper modeling of quantum coherence effects.

Abstract:A slow light effect in a hybrid nanocrystal complex composed of a semiconductor quantum dot (SQD) and a metal nanoparticle (MNP) is investigated theoretically. It is shown that a hole induced by coherent population oscillation appears at the absorption spectrum of the probe when an exciton and plasmon interact. Then a slow light effect may become possible. The numerical results further indicate that the slow light effect is greatly modified by the distance between the SQD and the MNP due to the coupling of the exciton and plasmon. For experimental conditions, the group velocity indexes with Gauss distribution and Lorenz distribution of the distance between the SQD and the MNP are evaluated. It is found that for small dispersion, almost the same values of the group velocity index can be obtained in these different distributions.

Abstract:The optical Bloch equations of a two-level system with homogeneous broadening driven by multimode squeezed light are given. Its general solutions are analysed in terms of the mathematical technique of the Laplace transform. The results show that the quantum effect of the light field can result in the vanishing of the dynamic Stark splitting of atomic level.

Abstract:We focus on the influence of multiphoton effect on the fluorescence spectrum and photon statistics of the bichromatically driven two-level atomic system. The influence of the multiphoton effect of the weaker driving field on the system and spontaneous emission are revealed by Schrieffer-Wolff perturbation theory, respectively. The physical origin of the multiphoton process affecting the fluorescence spectral asymmetry characteristics is fully investigated by studying the population distribution and the dressed atomic transition weight. Further, the suppression condition of the central peak of the central band is investigated. The photon statistical properties of the system are revealed by studying the frequency-resolved correlations between different sidepeaks and the central peak and sidepeak, respectively. In particular, the physical picture of the asymmetry of the two-photon correlation signal that is affected by the multiphoton process of the weaker driving field affecting the timing detection is fully revealed by the two methods of correlation moment and conditional quantum state, respectively. These results of ours provide a theoretical approach for studying multiphoton processes in multichromatically driven quantum systems, as well as for developing quantum simulation techniques such as spin locking.
Two-photon Ac-Stark Effect in Raman-Ramsey Interactions

Abstract:For the two-photon ac Stark effect in Raman-Ramsey configuration, such as the Raman clock, and pulsed CPT clock configuration, an interference phenomenon of two-photon ac Stark effect is predicted. Here we report this new physical phenomenon, the interference of two-photon ac Stark effect in two-zone Raman-Ramsey interactions, which is general in any Raman-Ramsey spectroscopy. In particular, for an atomic beam Raman clock configuration, the ac Stark shift will present an interference fringe caused by the separated oscillatory-field interaction when the shift fields interact with atoms at two zones. On the center of dispersion shape of normal ac-Stark shift, an interference pattern appeared when the scale of frequency detuning is expanded.
Observation of the two-photon Landau-Zener-Stückelberg-Majorana effect

Abstract:Second-order processes introduce nonlinearities in quantum dynamics, unlocking a totally unexpected area of control operations. Here we show that the well-known Landau-Zener-Stückelberg-Majorana (LZSM) transition can be driven by a virtual process in a three-level system whereby two photons from a drive with linearly-modulated phase create excitations onto the third level while avoiding completely the first level. We implement this experimentally in a transmon qubit achieving a population transfer of $98\%$, limited by relaxation. We predict and observe experimentally the doubling of the LZSM velocity. The observation of this effect is made possible by the nearly-exact cancellation of the two-photon ac Stark shift when the third transition is included. Furthermore, we demonstrate considerable robustness to offsets in frequency and amplitude, both in theory and experimentally.
