Abstract:The delivery of video services is generally considered a critical and perhaps the most difficult problem for telecommunications service providers to solve to achieve the "triple-play" of video, data, and voice. Transport of a mix of video, high-speed data, and voice-which is vital to maintain a competitive position against cable multiple systems operators (MSOs)-requires new solutions. Gigabit Ethernet interfaces can offer better network economics when combined with reliable synchronous optical network (SONET), wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), and/or fiber transport infrastructure. Here, we compare these transport technologies and present case study results. The case study includes broadcast as well as unicast traffic, SONET drop and continue or Ethernet multicast, a core network to connect super and regional headends/central offices, and an access network to connect regional headends/central offices to serving area locations. In this paper, we demonstrate that next-generation SONET can provide a balanced approach considering network economics and reliability. (c) 2006 Lucent Technologies Inc.

Abstract:Third-generation (3G) wireless networks provide for both increased circuit-switched voice capacity and high-speed packet data capabilities which promise greater access to rich multimedia content delivered to handheld or mobile devices. New data-centric high-bandwidth services will evolve the backbone to a data/Ethernet-dominated network. With such an evolution, the problem facing wireless service providers is how to leverage and evolve the existing SONET/SDH infrastructure to transmit Ethernet, as well as deliver legacy and next generation services in the metro backbone network. In this paper, we compare two evolution alternatives based on different choices of technology, namely Ethernet over SONET (EoS) and IP over MPLS over SONET (IPoMPLSoS). The comparisons cover network architecture, design, QoS, reliability and financial analysis. The paper also presents a case study based on a typical service provider offering CDMA 3G 1X services. We present two cases: one for a Greenfield operator deploying the metro core, and the other for an existing operator upgrading the core to carry Ethernet or MPLS traffic. Abstract:With the rapid development of high speed networks, such as Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON), traffic patterns in access networks have evolved from traditional text-oriented service to the mixed text-, voice- and video- based services, leading to so called "Triple Play". For supporting IPTV service in EPON access network infrastructure, in this article we propose a novel IPTV program multiplex access system to EPON, which enables multiple IPTV program source servers to seamlessly access to IPTV service access port of optical line terminal (OLT) in EPON. There are two multiplex schemes, namely static multiplex scheme and dynamic multiplex scheme, in implementing the program multiplexing. Static multiplex scheme is to multiplex all the IPTV programs and forward them to the OLT, regardless of the need of end-users. While dynamic multiplex scheme can dynamically multiplex and forward IPTV programs according to what the end-users actually demand and those watched by no end-user would not be multiplexed. By comparing these two schemes, a reduced traffic of EPON can be achieved by using dynamic multiplex scheme, especially when most end-users are watching the same few IPTV programs. Both schemes are implemented in our system, with their hardware and software designs described.

Abstract:In the IPTV systems, multicasting will play a crucial role in the delivery of high-quality video services, which can significantly improve bandwidth efficiency. However, the scalability and the signal quality of current IPTV can barely compete with the existing broadcast digital TV systems since it is difficult to implement large-scale multicasting with end-to-end guaranteed quality of service (QoS) in packet-switched IP network. China 3TNet project aimed to build a high performance broadband trial network to support large-scale concurrent streaming media and interactive multimedia services. The innovative idea of 3TNet is that an automatic switched optical networks (ASON) with the capability of dynamic point-to-multipoint (P2MP) connections replaces the conventional IP multicasting network in the transport core, while the edge remains an IP multicasting network. In this paper, we will introduce the network architecture and discuss challenges in such IP over Optical multicasting for video delivery.

Abstract:In view of the monitoring and maintenance on IPTV network,together with the rapid evolution of the network,to cater to the requirement of the service evolution and the providers' reality,the Ethernet controller of IPTV network tester is designed in this paper. And then,the architecture of the tester is described,the algorithm and indicators extraction of the Ethernet controller are analyzed. Meanwhile,the simulation and verification are also given based on FPGA. The simulating results prove that the design has reliability,stability and good applications in the IPTV network tester.

Abstract:Bandwidth requirements of both wireless and wired clients in access networks continue to increase rapidly, primarily due to the growth of video traffic. Application awareness can be utilized in access networks to optimize quality of experience (QoE) of end clients. In this study, we utilize information at the client-side application (e.g., video resolution) to achieve superior resource allocation that improves user QoE. We emphasize optimizing QoE of the system rather than quality of service (QoS), as user satisfaction directly relies on QoE and optimizing QoS does not necessarily optimize QoE, as shown in this study. We propose application-aware resource-allocation schemes on an Ethernet passive optical network (EPON), which supports wireless (utilizing orthogonal frequency division multiple access) and wired clients running video-conference applications. Numerical results show that the application-aware resource-allocation schemes improve QoE for video-conference applications for wired and wireless clients.

Abstract:The present work presents an architecture developed to evaluate the QoS parameters for the IPTV heterogeneous network. At its very basic level lie two software technologies: Video LAN and Windows Media Services with two operating systems: Windows and Linux. Three types of streams are analyzed, which will be transmitted to a Linux VLC client through means of the aggregation and access servers. The first stream is generated in real time by a capture camera, processed by the encapsulated VC-1 encoder and sent to the Media Server, while the second one is of VoD(Video on Demand) type and the third one will be handled by DVBViewer through the MPEG TS form. The first stream is transcoded in H.264-AAC such that the Linux stations will recognize its format. Through the simultaneous transmission of the three streams, we are analyzing their performance from a QoS parameters point of view by means of an application implemented in C programming language. The stream transporting the DVB-S television content was proven to ensure the best performance regarding loss of packets, delays and jitter.

Abstract:Due to the lack of quality guarantees, it's very difficult to deploy IPTV services in the current internet, especially in a NGN network, the core IMS framework interconnects different access networks which have differing amounts of bandwidth available and varying client terminals. The ETSI TISPAN standards allow adaptation multimedia content by transcoding, however, it is computationally intensive. This paper focuses on introducing scalable video coding into TISPAN IMS-based IPTV architecture, allowing cost-effective efficient solutions both for residential users and providers (e.g., flexible support of heterogeneous devices, adaptive video quality based on device and/or network capabilities).

Abstract:The integration of ethernet passive optical networks (EPONs) and IEEE 802.16 has been lately presented as a promising candidate for next-generation broadband access. This paper investigates the performance of the integrated carrier when specific service bundles (SBs) with bandwidth guarantee and diverse quality of service requirements are provisioned. We first present a novel framework that fairly distributes the upstream network capacity among the different SBs. We then propose a novel delay-based admission control scheme to increase the network utilization and enable an inter-SB statistical multiplexing. To obtain the expected delay of each SB stream, a generic analytical model is developed. Based on this model, we further formulate some important performance measures such as queuing delay, end-to-end (from wireless user to the central office of PON) delay, average queue size and optimal orthogonal frequency division multiplexing frame length. Numerical results validate our analysis and highlight the advantages of the proposed solution.

Abstract:To meet an increasing demand for multimedia services and electronic connectivity across the world, satellite networks will play an indispensable role in the deployment of global networks. The new services gaining momentum include mobile services, private intranets and high data rate internet access carried over integrated satellite-fiber networks. Several performance issues need to be addressed before a transport layer protocol, like TCP can satisfactorily work over satellite ATM for large delay-bandwidth networks. In this paper, we review the proposed satellite systems and discuss challenges such as, traffic management and QoS requirements for broadband satellite ATM networks. The performance results of TCP enhancements for Unspecified Bit Rate over ATM (ATM-UBR+) for large bandwidth-delay environments with various end system policies and drop policies for several buffer sizes are presented.

Abstract:Triple play convergence is now one of the important national strategies in China. Stimulated by the need of building a network that is capable of both Telecom and broadcasting services, an optical transport network (OTN) testbed is planed and deployed in Eastern China from 2009 to 2011. This testbed demonstrates the state of the art technologies in optical transport network design. It also features functions like role based network/resource management and network virtualization. In this paper, we will introduce the background of this effort and detailed design in network control, management and virtualization. We will also present our measurement experiences and results in this testbed regarding dynamic service provisioning, along with our recent efforts in standardizing performance metrics and measurement methodologies.

Abstract:Passive optical networks have shown to be much more attractive than access networks. In this paper, we study the problem of transmitting multimedia video traffic on a passive wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical network served as an access network. We explore the possibility of providing an integrated service directly at the WDM optical layer while taking into consideration the unique QoS requirement from multimedia video traffic stream. We introduce a novel multimedia video traffic scheduling framework to use in a passive optical access network. The results show that the proposed mechanism is capable of providing QoS guarantee for MPEG video applications while achieving high overall throughput.

Abstract:The long awaited `new environment' of high speed broadband networks and multimedia applications is fast becoming a reality. However, few systems in existence today, whether they be large scale pilots or small scale test-beds in research laboratories, offer a fully integrated and flexible environment where multimedia applications can maximally exploit the quality of service (QoS) capabilities of supporting networks and end-systems. In this paper we describe the implementation of an adaptive transport system that incorporates a QoS oriented API and a range of mechanisms to assist applications in exploiting QoS and adapting to fluctuations in QoS. The system, which is an instantiation of the Lancaster QoS Architecture, is implemented in a multi ATM switch network environment with Linux based PC end systems and continuous media file servers. A performance evaluation of the system configured to support video-on-demand application scenario is presented and discussed. Emphasis is placed on novel features of the system and on their integration into a complete prototype. The most prominent novelty of our design is a `distributed QoS adaptation' scheme which allows applications to delegate to the system responsibility for augmenting and reducing the perceptual quality of video and audio flows when resource availability increases or decreases.

Abstract:In transforming their optical transport networks, operators must consider multiple choices to determine the appropriate approaches in terms of the network design and optimization with newly available technologies, the network transition and evolution strategy and maximize at the same time the return on their investment. For instance, they need to take into account the network architecture such as ring versus mesh, fixed WDM versus T/ROADM, 40G or 100G versus 10G/40G/100G, integrated OTN switch versus separated OTN or MSPP switch. In this paper, we attempt to resolve these challenges by means of total cost of ownership analysis of a comprehensive case study with multiple different network architecture options. The economics impact (total cost of ownership) is thoroughly explored in terms of CAPEX and OPEX to differentiate the solutions options.

Abstract:This paper describes an industry best practice of edge routing and switching platform development for extended high-speed Ethernet transport and services. This is the first system designed to provide integrated 10Gb/s LAN/WAN PHY and OTN G.709 digital wrapper based Ethernet transport over wide area networks. Built on top of PHY device's comprehensive clock generation and recovery circuitry, it also supports the Synchronous Ethernet with the ability to distribute frequency through Ethernet ports and external timing interface. In addition, this optical networking oriented platform is augmented with Automatic Laser Shutdown capability for laser safety assurance. Our initial evaluation indicates that this aggregation platform can cost-effectively extend the converged IP over DWDM/OTN architecture from the core to the edge layers. Its scalable and optimized architecture design has great potential for advanced Metro/Carrier Ethernet feature expansion.

Abstract:Advances in SONET/SDH technologies have introduced novel features for improved services mapping and provisioning, enabling many new avenues for new Carrier Ethernet support. However Ethernet-over-SONET studies have mostly focused on provisioning point-to-point Ethernet private line offerings. This paper considers the more challenging case of provisioning multi-point-to-multi-point Ethernet LAN services over advanced SONET/SDH networks and presents novel strategies based upon connection group overlays. Detailed simulation results are also presented along with directions for future work.

Abstract:We investigate the techno-economic benefits of a novel optical transport network (OTN) architecture that meets the transport requirements of 6G systems in the Metro/Core network segments. The proposed solution is based on the disaggregation of the monolithic chassis-based node architecture that is used today to deploy OTN networks. The disaggregation breaks up the monolithic node system into stand alone white-boxes interconnected through active optical cables in a leaf-spine configuration. The leafs consist of line cards that provide client port interfaces, while the spines are Ethernet switches that emulate the process of OTN switching. The resulting solution provides a scalable and software-controlled OTN architecture based on off-the-shelf white-boxes that minimize the network acquisition costs. Results for a selected network scenario show that - compared to the monolithic solution - the disaggregated architecture yields average cost savings on the order of 39.7%.

Abstract:The impact of IP over optical two-layer multicasting on the performance of channel zapping is discussed through two simple experiments and evaluated by an large scale concurrent video delivery testing in the 3TNet testbed in Yangtze River Delta, China.
