Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Hypothesis</h3><p>Ice accretion is a challenging issue for various residential activities and industrial facilities. However, most of the current anti/de-icing coatings fail to maintain their properties when subject to frequent mechanical wear, and their limited functionality (either anti-icing or de-icing individually) cannot meet the requirement of all-weather utilization.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Experiments</h3><p>Herein, a multifunctional superhydrophobic coating is prepared by compositing ferroferric oxide nanoparticles (Fe<sub>3</sub>O<sub>4</sub> NPs) with fluorinated epoxy resin via an inverse infiltration process. The surface composition, morphology and wettability are systematically characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), laser scanning microscopy and contact angle tensiometer. The anti-icing and de-icing performances are evaluated by investigating the freezing delay and photothermal effect, respectively.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Findings</h3><p>This coating shows outstanding water repellency (water contact angle up to 161.0°, sliding angle down to 1.4°) and can maintain superhydrophobicity within 400 cycles of tape peeling, 260 cycles of sandpaper abrasion or 25 cycles of sand impact. Besides, because the hydrophobic nano/micro hierarchical structures tremendously retard the heat transfer, the freezing process of water droplet on this coating can be apparently delayed by up to 35 min as compared to the uncoated substrate. Moreover, owing to the photothermal effect of the Fe<sub>3</sub>O<sub>4</sub> NPs, the coating's surface temperature can be rapidly increased above 0℃ under infrared irradiation, which facilitates the ice melting on cold surfaces. Our work offers a versatile approach to address the icing problems in diverse weather conditions, which exhibits great prospects in various engineering applications.</p>

Abstract:Passive anti-icing and active anti-icing/de-icing were two major strategies to suppress icing on surfaces. Combining these two strategies and making full use of various energies can greatly improve anti-icing efficiency. In this study, a multifunctional anti-icing/de-icing coating with superhydrophobic passive anti-icing and electrothermal/photothermal active de-icing properties was proposed. Fluorinated epoxy resin and carbon/PTFE particles were used to prepare the multifunctional anti-icing/de-icing coating, which exhibited superhydrophobicity with water contact angle greater than 155° and conductivity higher than 40 S/m. The robust superhydrophobic property was demonstrated by repeated sandpaper abrasion and tape peeling tests. Moreover, both electricity and solar energy can be adopted for heating the surface and de-icing, showing efficient electrothermal/photothermal and anti-icing/de-icing properties. In addition, the synergistic icephobic mechanism was validated by characterizing the different freezing states of water droplets on surfaces: repelling droplets before freezing occurred, delaying icing during the freezing process and significantly reducing the ice adhesion after freezing via the self-generated micro-scale water film by heating. This study provided a new way to manufacture functional materials for practical anti-icing/de-icing applications.

Abstract:<p>The formation and accumulation of ice can lead to severe economic loss or even loss of life. To prevent these losses, there has been rapid development in icephobic materials in recent years. To deal with various icing conditions and different types of components, it is highly desirable to develop a surface that possesses both passive anti-icing and active deicing functions. However, so far there is no suitable solution for anti-icing material with adequate durability, low cost, and simplicity in fabrication that can also be turned into active deicing when necessary. Here, we demonstrate a magnetically responsive and flexible superhydrophobic photothermal film (PFe-PCS) consisting of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), iron powder (Fe), and candle soot (CS). The film displayed both passive anti-icing and active deicing performances by a simple approach without using fluorine-containing chemicals. The film consists of two superhydrophobic layers that can trap two air layers in the micro/nano structures. As a result, the freezing time is 4.7 times of that of bare substrate. Such designed surface structure not only displays a significant delay in water freezing time, but also minimizes heat loss by keeping the heat within the top surface during photothermal heating. The accumulated ice can be immediately melted in 237 s and the melted water can be rapidly rolled off. The PFe-PCS film can be applied to substrates with complex shapes including curved substrates via magnetic force. More importantly, the PFe-PCS film displayed excellent stability when exposed to strong acid, base, salt solutions and liquid nitrogen. The superhydrophobicity and anti-icing performances were well retained after 320 cycles sandpaper abrasion, 3 h water flow impact, and cyclic icing/deicing. This work originated the concept of double layered surface structure for both passive anti-icing and active de-icing. The film is robust and self-healing, making it potentially applicable for ice prevention and removal for various shaped components.</p>

Abstract:Ice formation is a ubiquitous phenomenon in various fields and often leads to catastrophic consequence. Despite numerous anti-icing coating strategies have been exploited, there are still multiple roadblocks in the way of developing anti-icing coatings with durable and effective anti-/de-icing properties. In this work, Fe 3 O 4 was coated in-situ with mesoporous silica nanoparticle (MSN), in which high dosage of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was then loaded. As-obtained core-shelled Fe 3 O 4 @MSN-PDMS aggregates were incorporated into silicone resin to construct an NIR responsive anti-/de-icing coating via spraying method. The as-prepared coating exhibited superhydrophobicity (156.7 ° of water contact angle) and delayed icing to 412 s under -20 °C. Besides, the prepared coating could heat and release PDMS to constitute a PDMS/water double-layer lubricant under NIR irradiation, significantly reducing ice adhesion strength from 90.60 kPa to 12.04 kPa. Furthermore, the prepared coating demonstrates self-healing properties and high durability, releasing PDMS stored in the coating sustainably to heal the damaged coating surface and keeping superhydrophobicity after chemical etching and mechanical erosion. Finally, the de-icing applicability of the coating was validated using a homemade rotor wing model. Such core-shelled anti-/de-icing materials would provide theoretical basis and brand-new design strategy for development and application of anti-/de-icing materials.

Abstract:This article proposes a composite coating combining template method and spraying technology, which not only exhibits excellent superhydrophobicity but also possesses significant photothermal and electrothermal properties. Moreover, the material demonstrates superior durability and thermal stability. These characteristics make it an ideal choice for outdoor equipment, effectively delaying surface icing and realizing active deicing functions. Surface icing issues have a significant impact on industries such as aviation, transportation, and construction. Superhydrophobic surfaces can delay ice formation due to their liquid‐repellent properties, but their effectiveness is not pronounced in extremely cold environments. Electric heating coatings can effectively prevent ice formation, but they have limitations in environments with insufficient electrical energy supply. The anti‐icing effect of photothermal superhydrophobic coatings is restricted under conditions of insufficient sunlight. To enhance the ice‐preventing performance of superhydrophobic coatings in extremely cold environments, this article employs a template spraying method to prepare a carbon black and graphene composite coating that provides superhydrophobic passive anti‐icing and photo/electrothermal active deicing capabilities. The micro‐nanostructured superhydrophobic surface exhibits exceptional ice‐preventing performance. The excellent electrothermal and photothermal performance, along with high energy conversion efficiency, significantly enhance the coating's deicing efficiency. Under the synergistic effect of solar and electrical energy, the ice layer is completely melted within just 135 s. Furthermore, the material possesses excellent durability (resistance to mechanical wear, acid and alkali corrosion, and UV aging), as well as thermal stability. This research provides new avenues and insights for the development of advanced anti‐icing and deicing materials for applications in aviation, transportation, construction, and other fields.

Abstract:This research aims to address the negative impact of global climate change on equipment stability, with a particular focus on the occurrence of icing on working surfaces at low temperature. To this end, we have developed a novel magnetically responsive superhydrophobic surface to enhance anti-icing properties and adapt to environmental changes. We prepared magnetically responsive micro-cilia arrays (MRMAs) with good flexibility and magnetostriction through a facile spray gun coating technique. By adjusting the application mode and distance of the magnetic field, three different morphologies can be achieved: vertical, curved and crossed, thus optimizing water repellency, active anti-icing and passive anti-icing performance. Experimental data show that vertical MRMAs exhibit extremely high contact angles and low droplet adhesion, which facilitates rapid water droplet removal, while curved MRMAs exhibit the lowest ice adhesion strength, which effectively reduces the likelihood of ice formation. In addition, the crossed MRMAs excelled in delaying icing, significantly prolonging the time before water droplets begin to freeze. This research not only provides a novel anti-icing strategy, but also offers new ideas for designing multifunctional surfaces that can adapt to complex environmental conditions.
Polyols-Infused Slippery Surfaces Based on Magnetic Fe3O4-Functionalized Polymer Hybrids for Enhanced Multifunctional Anti-Icing and Deicing Properties.

Abstract:High durability, low cost, and superior anti-icing and active deicing multifunctional surface coatings, especially in the extreme environment, are highly desired to inhibit and/or eliminate the detriment of icing in many fields, such as automobile, aerospace, and power transmission. Herein, we first report a facile and versatile strategy to prepare novel slippery polyols-infused porous surfaces (SPIPS's) with the inexpensive polyols as the lubricant liquids. These SPIPS's are fabricated by a spray-coating approach based on amino-modified magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles (MNP@NH2) and amphiphilic P(poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate- co-glycidyl methacrylate) copolymer covalent cross-linked hybrids, followed by infusion with various polyols. The as-prepared surface exhibits excellent antifrosting property, that is, it can greatly postpone frost formation as long as 2700 s at -18 °C. Meanwhile, differential scanning calorimetry results clearly demonstrate that SPIPS's show a remarkable freezing point depression capacity and the crystallization point of water can be decreased as low as -36.8 °C. The SPIPS also displays an extremely low ice adhesion strength (0.1 kPa) due to its unique surface characteristics. Moreover, outstanding active thermal deicing property is achieved for these slippery surfaces because of intrinsically photothermal effect of magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticle. Hence, these results indicate that this kind of multifunctional bioinspired slippery surface, with superb stability, good cost effectiveness, and easy fabrication, can be used as a promising candidate for anti-icing and deicing applications.

Abstract:Solving the problem of ice accumulation on solid surfaces is of great importance to industrial production and human life. At present, the design of most anti-icing materials faces the problems of high cost, complex preparation, environmental pollution and energy consumption. In this work, we propose a rapid and simple preparation method for anti-icing/deicing coatings. A photothermal superhydrophobic coating was quickly prepared by a two-step deposition method using Fe3O4@PDMS mixed liquor, in which Fe3O4 particles not only have excellent photothermal conversion property, but also can impart the coating surface with micro-nanoscale rough structure, PDMS is used as a binder to enhance the durability of the coating while providing low surface energy. The results reveal that the surface temperature of the coating can rise to 85 °C in 10 min under simulated sunlight irradiation and melt the frozen droplets in 270 s. The prepared coating also shows excellent superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 160° and is able to delay icing time up to 660 s. In addition, the coating has excellent self-cleaning, anti-fouling and mechanical durability properties. Furthermore, the hydrophobicity can be quickly restored by a simple simulated sunlight treatment even if the surface of the coating is impacted by water. Therefore, this multifunctional anti-icing/deicing coating with simple preparation and low cost has a broad application prospect.

Abstract:Photothermal superhydrophobic coatings hold great promise in addressing the limitations of conventional superhydrophobic anti‐icing coatings. However, developing such coatings with excellent impalement resistance, mechanical robustness and weather resistance remains a significant challenge. Here, we report facile preparation of robust photothermal superhydrophobic coatings with all the above advantages. The coatings were prepared by spraying a dispersion consisting of fluorinated silica nanoparticles, a silicone‐modified polyester adhesive and photothermal carbon black nanoparticles onto Al alloy plates followed by thermal curing. Thermal curing caused migration of perfluorodecyl polysiloxane from within the coatings to the surface, effectively maintaining a low surface energy despite the presence of the adhesive. Therefore, combined with the hierarchical micro‐/nanostructure, dense yet rough nanostructure, adhesion of the adhesive and chemically inert components, the coatings exhibited remarkable superhydrophobicity, impalement resistance, mechanical robustness and weather resistance. Furthermore, the coatings demonstrated excellent photothermal effect even in the ‐10 °C, 80% relative humidity and weak sunlight (0.2 sun) environment. Consequently, the coatings showed excellent passive anti‐icing and active de‐icing performance. Moreover, the coatings have good generalizability and scalability. We are confident that this study will accelerate the practical implementation of photothermal superhydrophobic coatings.

Abstract:Facing the problems of fossil energy shortage and solid surface icing, the use of solar energy to remove surface ice accumulation is a promising solution. Here, we propose a superhydrophobic coating with a photothermal effect for anti-icing and de-icing and defrosting performance. We designed the coating using a simple secondary spray method. That is, a bonding substrate (epoxy resin) is first constructed on the glass substrate, then a protective layer (polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS)) mixed with SiC/TiN composite particles is sprayed onto the epoxy resin surface, and finally dried to obtain a photothermal superhydrophobic coating. In this design, the coating shows (I) excellent superhydrophobicity (water contact angle = 155°, sliding angle = 4°), (II) excellent photothermal effect (the surface temperature of obtain coating rapidly rose to 111.8°C under 1 sun), and (III) good chemical and mechanical stability. As a result, the coating shows excellent anti-icing, de-icing, and defrosting properties. For example, the coating can significantly extend the icing time. In the face of surface frozen water droplets, frost layers, and large areas of ice cover, the coating can rapidly photothermally remove surface ice layers under 40 mW·cm -2 light irradiation. As a result, the coating is simple to prepare and has excellent superhydrophobic, photothermal anti-icing/de-icing, and defrosting properties. The study is of great significance for multifunctional applications.

Abstract:The formation and accumulation of ice can cause serious accidents and economic losses. In order to eliminate the threat of ice accretion, superhydrophobic surfaces are widely used in the design of anti-/deicing materials. However, single-function superhydrophobic anti-icing films cannot meet the anti-/deicing requirements in complex cold environments. Here, a new design of smart anti-icing film coupled with active deicing function is demonstrated. The Fe3O4 nanoparticles with excellent photothermal conversion effect are dispersed in the polyetherimide (PEI) substrate with good thermodynamic performance, then the superhydrophobic microstructure is built on the modified PEI film surface by lithography. The experimental results show that such surface design can not only improve the hydrophobicity, but also trap air in the coordination structure to reduce the heat loss at the interface. The contact angle of surface droplets is as high as 157°, and the delayed freezing time is 9 times that of the pure PEI surface. After activating the photothermal mode, the ice on film surface can completely melt in an average of 17 s, then the tested sample is still stable after soaking in strong acid/alkali solution and sand flow impact test. The film can be used in many fields such as communication, power and aerospace. Also, this design idea has certain enlightenment for the preparation and application of intelligent anti-/deicing film.

Spraying Fabrication of Durable and Transparent Coatings for Anti-Icing Application: Dynamic Water Repellency, Icing Delay, and Ice Adhesion

Abstract:Anti-icing/icephobic coatings, typically applied in the form of surface functional materials, are considered to be an ideal selection to solve the icing issues faced by daily life and industrial production. However, the applications of anti-icing coatings are greatly limited by the two main challenges: bonding strength with substrates and stability of the high anti-icing performance. Here, we designed and fabricated a kind of high-performance superhydrophobic fluorinated silica (F-SiO2)@polydimethylsiloxane coatings and further emphasized the improvement of the bonding strength with substrates and the maintenance of high anti-icing performance. The resultant coatings exhibited excellent water repellency with a contact angle up to 155.3° and a very short contact time (∼10.2 ms) of impact droplets. At low temperatures, the coming droplets still rapidly rebounded off the coating surface, and the superhydrophobic coatings displayed a more than 50-fold increase of freezing time comparing with bare aluminum. The ice adhesion strength on the coatings was only 26.3 kPa, which was far less than that (821.9 kPa) of bare aluminum. Furthermore, the nanoporous structures constructed by anodic oxidation could tremendously enhance the bonding strength of the coatings with the substrate, which was evaluated through a standard method (ASTM D3359). The anti-icing properties still retained high stability under the conditions of 30 icing/deicing cycles, soaking, and scouring of acid solution (pH = 5.6). This work can effectively push the anti-icing coatings toward a real-world application.
Robust superhydrophobic coating for photothermal anti-icing and de-icing via electrostatic powder spraying

Abstract:Employing electrostatic powder spraying technology, this research successfully devised an eco-friendly and enduring superhydrophobic coating that showcases exceptional anti-icing and de-icing characteristics without emitting volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Through the integration of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and silica dioxide (SiO 2 ) particles into a polyester-based powder coating, followed by thorough mixing with a domestic blender, the resultant powder was uniformly applied to the substrate via electrostatic attraction and subsequently cured to yield a mechanically robust superhydrophobic coating (CA = ~162°, SA = ~2.3°). Remarkably, the coating sustained a contact angle of approximately 150° even after enduring two cycles of water and falling-sand impact tests—equivalent to two years of natural weathering as per ISO/TS 10689 standards—as well as surviving 250 cycles of abrasion or 200 peel tests, underscoring its remarkable durability. The ingenuity of the coating's superhydrophobicity lengthened the freezing duration by 2.8-fold for a 100 μL water droplet at −20 °C. When photothermal attributes were coupled with superhydrophobicity, the freezing delay was further amplified to 3.6 times under an illumination of 0.3 kW/m 2 and to 4.2 times under 0.6 kW/m 2 . Moreover, the coating slashed the ice melting time by nearly half when tested under simulated sunlight (1 kW/m 2 ) or under the influence of an infrared laser (25 kW/m 2 ), relative to an uncoated aluminum substrate. In comparison to water droplets on aluminum, the ice adhesion force on the coated surface was diminished by 87 %. In summation, this innovative, eco-conscious, and long-lasting superhydrophobic coating, boasting superior anti-icing capabilities, holds immense promise for mass production and extensive application in the realm of outdoor metal protection.

Abstract:Currently, a series of anti/de-icing coatings that combine active and passive methods can take advantage of various energy sources to significantly improve anti/de-icing efficiency. However, the preparation of multifunctional coatings often relies on complex preparation techniques, expensive raw materials and additional control systems, which limit the practical application of such ice mitigation strategies. This study combined active and passive ice mitigation methods to construct an electrothermal/photothermal superhydrophobic coating. According to the laminar distribution of graphite molecules, micro/nano-scale flaky graphite particles are produced by a convenient mechanical wiping method, which provide the coating with superhydrophobicity, electrothermal and photothermal properties at the same time through a strong binding effect with PDMS. The dynamic, static anti/de-icing performances and the reliability of the electrical/photothermal properties of the coating are experimentally verified. This multifunctional ice mitigation strategy avoids complex control systems and cumbersome preparation processes, providing a new and viable path to effective anti/de-icing.

One-Pot Preparation of Fluorine-Free Magnetic Superhydrophobic Particles for Controllable Liquid Marbles and Robust Multifunctional Coatings

Abstract:In this paper, magnetic superhydrophobic particles were prepared by simultaneously coating silica microspheres and modifying 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexamethyl disilazane (HMDS) around the ferric oxide nanoparticles via a one-pot sol-gel process. The effect of the molar ratio of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) to HMDS on the wettability of superhydrophobic particles (Fe3O4@SiO2/HMDS) was investigated. Various stable liquid marble encapsulated solvents with different surface tensions, pH values, volumes, and temperatures could be obtained by simply rolling them on superhydrophobic particles. The magnetic liquid marbles could be directional transported and fixed-point volatilized. Furthermore, superhydrophobic particles were sprayed onto different surfaces using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as the binder to construct organic-inorganic composite multifunctional coatings by a one-step process. By optimizing the content of Fe3O4@SiO2/HMDS and PDMS in the spraying solution, the prepared coatings showed superior superhydrophobicity with contact angles of larger than 150° and sliding angles of smaller than 10°. The coated fluorine-free fabric possessed excellent air permeability, tensile strength, and hydrostatic pressure resistance, thus fulfilling the practical wearable requirements. Besides, the prepared fabrics maintained stable water repellency even after withstanding mechanical damages or long-term exposure to severe environments. Moreover, the coated superhydrophobic materials could be applied for the on-demand separation of various oil/water mixtures. In addition, the superhydrophobic fabric presented excellent photothermal conversion performances, showing outstanding anti-icing and accelerated deicing properties. Thus, the prepared nonfluorinated and stable magnetic particles offer potential in the areas of controlled encapsulation and directional delivery and, as building blocks, are promising for the construction of robust, large-area, and multifunctional self-cleaning surfaces.

Abstract:The formation and accumulation of ice can induce serious economic damage. Eco-friendly anti-icing/de-icing surfaces have been developed to address these problems. Superhydrophobic photothermal coatings have received significant attention in recent years, but an anti-icing/de-icing coating which is robust and facile to prepare is highly desired. Herein, a fluorine-free MnO 2 /PDMS superhydrophobic coating was prepared using a facile spraying method. The excellent superhydrophobicity (water contact angle of 162.3°) and good self-cleaning properties were due to the surface microstructure of micron/nano-scale MnO 2 with the "lotus leaf effect", while the coating was able to maintain efficient photothermal properties over time, with excellent passive anti-icing and active de-icing properties. In terms of mechanical durability, it was subjected to severe tests (sandpaper abrasion, tape-peeling, sand-washing, sonic treatment) and maintained good robustness. Based on the photothermal properties of MnO 2 and the superhydrophobicity of the coating, it could have multiple applications, such as personal thermal management, oil–water separation, and solar-steam generation. This study provides a potential anti-icing/de-icing coating for large-scale preparation and multiple practical applications.

Abstract:A novel superhydrophobic electro- conductive coating with liquid metal (Ga90In10) and ZnO nano-petals is fabricated by integrating the methods of spraying, crystal growth and low surface energy modification. The results indicate that the paper-based surface could be superhydrophobic in cold environment and successfully realize uni-directional ice driving with the help of thermal gradient. We anticipate that the combination of excellent superhydrophobic performance of the composite structure with inherent conductive advantage of liquid metal will find a vast application prospect.

Abstract:Outdoor icing is an unavoidable phenomenon that causes inconvenience in human life. Nowadays, developed anti-icing coatings combining active and passive methods usually face the problems of unstable solar energy supply or excessive electrical energy consumption. Combining photothermal conversion with electrothermal properties can result in more energy-efficient, controllable, and long-lasting anti-icing/deicing coatings. Therefore, in this study, a composite coating with electrothermal, photothermal, and superhydrophobic properties was prepared by utilizing multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and polypyrrole (PPy). Water droplets take 14 times longer to freeze on coating surface than bare substrates due to the high contact angles (156°) and low sliding angles (8°). Based on the amazing light absorption rate (97.33 %) and excellent electrothermal properties (95.7 °C), which prevent ice or frost from forming on the surface of the coating under 1 sun irradiation or 0.20 W·cm −2 electrical power density input. This coating shows promising application due to its self-cleaning, low-temperature hydrophobicity, abrasion resistance, and corrosion resistance.

Abstract:Metals with anti-icing and anti-corrosion properties are necessary in marine fields. Here, a robust decoupling superhydrophobic coating with anti-icing and anti-corrosion performance was fabricated by sequential spraying unmodified micron-sized SiO 2 particles and modified nano-sized TiO 2 particles. The unmodified micron-sized SiO 2 particles with sturdiness act as a protective framework for the modified nano-sized TiO 2 particles with superhydrophobicity, which effectively enhance the robustness of coatings. Consequently, the decoupling coating reveals the excellent superhydrophobicity (contact angle > 157°, roll off angle < 5°) and promising robustness (the friction coefficient of ~ 0.25). In addition, the superhydrophobic property endows the coating with admirable anti-icing performance, in which the icing time of decoupling coating is about 10 times of the substrate. The synergistic effect of epoxy resin adhesive layer and superhydrophobicity enables the decoupling coating exhibit excellent anti-corrosion property in electrochemical measurements and immersion tests. Therefore, the decoupling superhydrophobic coating with significant performance advantages could expand the application fields of other various solids.
