Abstract:The introduction of the concept of gradient force and scattering and absorption force is an important milestone in optical trapping. However the profiles of these forces are usually unknown, even for standard setups. Here, we successfully calculated them analytically via multipole expansion and numerically via Mie theory and fast Fourier transform. The former provides physical insight, while the latter is highly accurate and efficient. A recipe to create truly conservative energy landscapes is presented. These may open up qualitatively new features in optical manipulation.

Abstract:Division of optical force into gradient force and scattering force is a decades long problem. The concepts of “gradient force” and “scattering force” are very commonly applied in the interpretation of optical trapping simulation and experiment, but no one has seen their true face except for a few special cases. Such a division is important because the gradient force is responsible for optical trapping, while scattering force is responsible for particle transportation. All previous studies either has unjustified approximations or consider particle small (dipole) or large (geometrical optics) compare to the wavelength of light. Here, we present a rigorous, accurate, and efficient method to separate the gradient force and the scattering force using Fourier Transformation. This approach can, in principles, handle spherical particles of arbitrary size and composition, as long as the total optical force can be computed by, for example, Mie scattering theory plus Maxwell stress tensor. Particle of different sizes and compositions trapped by an optical tweezers are considered, which includes dipolar/Mie sized particle made up of dielectric or metal. Not surprisingly, the numerical aperture and aberration also play an important role. We fully tested the accuracy and stability of this approach: it is sufficiently accurate as long as a sufficiently large unit cell is employed such that the optical force in the cell boundary can be treated as zero.

Abstract:A MATLAB function GCforce is presented for the calculation of gradient and scattering parts of optical force (OF). The decomposition of OF into the gradient and scattering parts, or, equivalently, the conservative and nonconservative components, is of great importance to the physical understanding of optical micromanipulation. In this paper, we propose a formulation to decompose the OF acting on a spherical particle immersed in an arbitrary monochromatic optical field, based on the generalized Lorenz-Mie theory and the Cartesian multipole expansion approach. The expressions for the gradient and scattering forces are given explicitly in terms of the partial wave expansion coefficients of the optical field shining on the particle and the Mie coefficients of the particle. A MATLAB function GCforce .m is also presented for the calculation. The explicit and rigorous decomposition of the OF into conservative and nonconservative forces sheds light on the understanding of light-matter interaction as well as contributes significantly to the designing of optical fields to achieve various optical micromanipulation. Abstract:Optical forces have been fruitfully applied in a broad variety of areas that not only span the traditional scientific fields such as physics, chemistry, and biology, but also in more applied fields. It is customary and useful to split the optical force into the (conservative) gradient force and the (non-conservative) scattering and absorption force. These forces are different in attributes. The ability to tailor them will open great potential in fundamental optics and practical applications. Here, we present an analytical and a numerical approach to calculate these forces, and, with these tools, we create a fairly general class of 2D conservative optical force field. In general, particles immersed in an optical force do not obey equilibrium statistical mechanics, making the analysis complicated. With conservative forces, these issues are resolved.

Abstract:In this paper,a theoretical simulation of light propagation in gradient-index film was proposed.Ray Tracing Algorithm and Monte Carlo simulation method that based on Maxwell's equations are employed.The gradient-index film is assumed to be a combination of multiplayer homogeneous films,whose complex refractive indexes depend on their depth in gradient-index film.The results show the influences on film reflection from particle's density,diameter and the gradient refractive index.It would help us to design a new kind of low-refractive film,and we may use this method to solve the 'light pollution' problem.Advanced researches are also wanted.
Scattering and Absorption of Light by Ice Particles: Solution by a New Physical-Geometric Optics Hybrid Method

Abstract:A new physical-geometric optics hybrid (PGOH) method is developed to compute the scattering and absorption properties of ice particles. This method is suitable for studying the optical properties of ice particles with arbitrary orientations, complex refractive indices (i.e., particles with significant absorption), and size parameters (proportional to the ratio of particle size to incident wavelength) larger than ∼20, and includes consideration of the edge effects necessary for accurate determination of the extinction and absorption efficiencies. Light beams with polygon-shaped cross sections propagate within a particle and are traced by using a beam-splitting technique. The electric field associated with a beam is calculated using a beam-tracing process in which the amplitude and phase variations over the wavefront of the localized wave associated with the beam are considered analytically. The geometric-optics near field for each ray is obtained, and the single-scattering properties of particles are calculated from electromagnetic integral equations. The present method does not assume additional physical simplifications and approximations, except for geometric optics principles, and may be regarded as a “benchmark” within the framework of the geometric optics approach. The computational time is on the order of seconds for a single-orientation simulation and is essentially independent of the size parameter. The single-scattering properties of oriented hexagonal ice particles (ice plates and hexagons) are presented. The numerical results are compared with those computed from the discrete-dipole-approximation (DDA) method.

Abstract:We present the Cartesian multipole expansion theory for computing the optical force acting on a spherical chiral particle immersed in generic monochromatic optical fields. The theory enables us to develop the general formulations for individually calculating the optical gradient and scattering forces (also known as the conservative and nonconservative forces) on a spherical chiral particle of arbitrary size. A set of analytical expressions are then derived for the gradient and scattering forces acting on a chiral particle in arbitrary optical field modeled by a series of homogenous plane waves. As examples of applications, we reveal that, in optical lattice composed of three interferential plane waves, the profiles of the in-plane optical gradient and scattering force acting on a spherical chiral particle show higher degree of symmetry and exhibit invariance with respect to the particle size, material composition, and chirality. The remarkable characteristics are totally masked in the undecomposed optical total force. The rigorous analytical decomposition of optical force sheds some more light on the physical understanding of light-matter interaction, it may also contribute significantly to the design of optical beams for achieving more diversified optical micromanipulation on chiral particles.

Abstract:In this communication, we propose a frequency-independent approach, the numerical steepest descent path (NSDP)method, for computing the physical optics scattered electromagnetic field on the quadratic hyperbolic surface. Due to the highly oscillatory nature of the physical optics integral, the proposed method relies on deforming the integration path of the integral into the NSDP on the complex plane. Numerical results for the PO-based EM fields from the hyperbolic surface illustrate that the proposed NSDP method is frequency independent in computational cost and error controllable in accuracy.

Abstract:The radiation force calculated in the Rayleigh regime is investigated by comparison with the generalized Lorenz Mie Theory (GLMT). The basic concepts behind the Rayleigh regime and GLMT are introduced, and a numerical simulation is conducted to analyze the difference between these two methods. Several physical parameters are considered to evaluate their effect on the calculation accuracy of the Rayleigh regime, including the particle size, optical wavelength, and beam waist. The numerical results show that the valid region of the Rayleigh regime depends primarily on the ratio of the wavelength and particle size, whereas the Gaussian beam size has a lesser impact on the calculation results for both methods. Our study provides critical conditions under which the Rayleigh regime is applicable. The calculation accuracy of the Rayleigh regime is also theoretically analyzed.

Abstract:The scattering of light by dielectric particles much larger than the wavelength of incident light is attributed to diffraction, external reflection and outgoing refracted waves. This paper focuses on diffraction and external reflection by faceted particles, which can be calculated semi-analytically based on physical optics. Three approximate methods; the surface-integral method (SIM), the volume-integral method (VIM), and the diffraction plus reflection pattern from ray optics (DPR) are compared. Four elements of the amplitude scattering matrix in the SIM and the VIM are presented in an explicit form. Of interest is that diffraction and external reflection are separable in the SIM, whereas they are combined in the VIM. A feature of zero forward reflection is noticed in the SIM. The applicability of the DPR method is restricted to particles with random orientations. In the manner of van de Hulst, we develop a new technique to compute the reflection pattern of randomly oriented convex particles using spheres with the same refractive index, resulting in an improvement in the precision of the reflection calculation in near-forward and near-backward directions. The accuracy of the aforementioned three methods is investigated by comparing their results with those from the discrete-dipole-approximation (DDA) method for hexagonal particles at the refractive index of 1.3+i1.0. For particles with fixed orientations, it is found that the SIM and the VIM are comparable in accuracy and applicable when the size parameter is on the order of 20. The ray-spreading effect on the phase function is evident from the results of various size parameters. For randomly oriented particles, the DPR is more efficient than the SIM and the VIM.

Abstract:The pseudo-spectral time domain (PSTD) and the discrete dipole approximation (DDA) are two popular and robust methods for the numerical simulation of dielectric particle light scattering. The present study compares the numerical performances of the two methods in the computation of the single-scattering properties of homogeneous dielectric spheres and spheroids for which the exact solutions can be obtained from the Lorenz-Mie theory and the T-matrix theory. The accuracy criteria for the extinction efficiency and the phase function are prescribed to be the same for the PSTD and DDA in order that the computational time can be compared in a fair manner. The computational efficiency and applicability of the two methods are each shown to depend on both the size parameter and the refractive index of the scattering particle. For a small refractive index, a critical size parameter, which decreases from 80 to 30 as the refractive index increases from 1.2 to 1.4, exists below which the DDA outperforms the PSTD. For large refractive indices (>1.4), the PSTD is more efficient than the DDA for a wide size parameter range and has a larger region of applicability. Furthermore, the accuracy shown by the two methods in the computation of backscatter, linear polarization, and asymmetry factor is comparable. Abstract:One of the theoretical challenges in studying optical trapping is the decomposition of the optical force into the gradient force (conservative component) and scattering force (nonconservative component), which can be achieved either for Raleigh particles or for very large particles in the regime of ray optics. However, for the moderate particles in between these two limits, the scenario is still a mystery. In this paper we present a theoretical approach to bridge this gap and fully split the optical force acting on a spherical particle immersed in a generic monochromatic free-space optical field into two such essentially different components, which is efficient even for large particles with the exact consideration of light polarization, thus offering a benchmark for examining the effective range for application of ray optics. Our approach models general optical fields by a series of homogeneous plane waves. The analytical expressions for the gradient and scattering parts of the optical force exerted on a spherical particle of arbitrary size illuminated by multiple interferential plane waves are then derived. As examples of applications, we investigate the gradient and scattering forces acting on a dielectric particle immersed in the Bessel beam. Our results are in excellent agreement with those obtained based on ray optics methods when the illuminated particle is large enough, while exhibiting effects of Mie resonance that are totally missing in the ray optics for moderate particle sizes. Finally, we study the effect of particle size on the gradient force acting on a spherical particle sitting in multiple interferential plane waves. Our extensively numerical results, up to a size as large as 2000 illuminating wavelengths, suggest an overall decreasing tendency in the ratio of the magnitude of the gradient force to that of the total force as the particle size increases.
Quantitative Study of Conservative Gradient Force and Non-Conservative Scattering Force Exerted on a Spherical Particle in Optical Tweezers

Abstract:We rigorously calculate the conservative gradient force (GF) and the non-conservative scattering force (SF) associated with the optical tweezers (the single beam optical trap). A wide range of parameters are considered, with particle size ranging from the Rayleigh to Mie regime (radius ∼3 µm), dielectric constant ranging from metallic (large and negative) to high dielectrics (large and positive), numerical aperture (NA) ranging from 0.5 to 1.33, and different polarizations. The trap depth associated with GF can reach 123 and 168 kBT per mW for a 0.5 µm-radius polystyrene particle illuminated by a 1064 nm Gaussian beam with NA = 0.9 and 1.3, respectively. This indicates that unless at a low beam power or with a small NA, the Brownian fluctuations do not play a role in the stability. The transverse GF orthogonal to beam propagation always dominates over the transverse SF. While the longitudinal SF can be larger than the longitudinal GF when the scattering is strong, the NA is small, or when absorption is present, optical trapping under these conditions is difficult. Generally speaking, absorption reduces GF and enhances SF, while increasing a dielectric constant enhances GF slightly but boosts SF significantly owing to stronger scattering. These results verify previous experimental observations and explain why optical tweezers are so robust across such a wide range of conditions. Our quantitative calculations will also provide a guide to future studies.

Abstract:We present a multipole expansion theory for optical force exerting on a particle immersed in generic monochromatic free-space optical field. Based on the theory, we have, for the first time, successfully decomposed the optical force on a spherical particle of arbitrary size into a conservative and a nonconservative parts, which are, respectively, written as a gradient of a scalar function and curl of a vector function in an explicit and analytical form. As a result, a scalar potential and a vector potential can be defined, up to gauge freedoms, for the optical force. The decomposition shed light on the understanding of the optical force and pave a new way to engineer optical force for various purposes such as equilibrium statistical mechanics as well as optical micromanipulation.

Abstract:Nanoscale forces play an important role in different scanning probe microscopies, most notably atomic force microscopy (AFM). In contrast, in scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM) a light-induced coupled local optical polarization between tip and sample is typically detected by scattering to the far field. Measurements of the optical gradient force associated with that optical near-field excitation would offer a novel optical scanning probe modality. Here we provide a generalized theory of optical gradient force nano-imaging and -spectroscopy. We quantify magnitude and distance dependence of the optical gradient force and its spectral response. We show that the optical gradient force is dispersive for single particle electronic and vibrational resonances, distinct from recent claims of its experimental observation. In contrast, the force can be absorptive for collective resonances. We provide a guidance for its measurements and distinction from competing processes such as thermal expansion.

Beam Tracing with Physical Optics for Angular Glint Calculation in Near Field

Abstract:Angular glint is an important factor affecting radar measurement accuracy, which comes from the interaction of multiple scattering centers of the extended target and cannot be eliminated. In the near-field region, angular glint exerts a more significant impact on radar tracking accuracy, and may even cause radar pointing to fall beyond the actual target extent. There are two methods for calculating angular glint, the Poynting vector method (PVM) and the phase gradient method (PGM), of which PVM is commonly used for theoretical calculations and PGM is often used for practical measurements. In this paper, the angular glint is calculated by PVM using the scattered field of the target. Therefore, optimizing the computational efficiency of the near-field scattered field is of utmost significance. While Geometrical Optics (GO) and Physical Optics (PO) are commonly used methods for high-frequency electromagnetic scattering calculations, GO can only calculate the scattered field in the specular direction, and PO is not applicable to scenarios involving multiple reflections. Therefore, this paper proposes a physical optics method based on beam tracing, which can not only calculate the scattered field in any direction but also solve the problem of multiple reflections. Furthermore, the PO method requires the initial subdivision of the target into small facets. The size of these facets is dependent on the frequency, and the number of facets for the target substantially increases as the frequency rises, thereby affecting computational efficiency. In the proposed method in this paper, the target can be composed of large-size facets, allowing for the rapid computation of the near-field scattering field, and higher computational efficiency can be obtained by introducing space acceleration structure and parallel computing techniques.

Abstract:Based on classical electromagnetic theory, the conservation law for linear momentum in an optical field is derived. The expressions of gradient and scattering forces exerted on an arbitrary object are obtained. It validates that electromagnetic model can be used to explain fundamental of laser trapping and manipulation of living biological cells and organelles with cells. Theoretical analysis indicates that the forces acting on Rayleigh particles can be divided into two types: the scattering force which comes from electromagnetic wave momentum changes due to the scattering by a dipole and the gradient force which is equal to the Lorenz force acting on the induced dipole. And the optical forces are relative to systemic parameters including the radius of the beam waist, the relative refractive index of particle and surrounding medium, the radius of particle and laser power.
Enhanced Transverse Optical Gradient Force on Rayleigh Particles in Two Plane Waves.

Abstract:Based on the full wave simulation and the Maxwell stress tensor theory, we demonstrate an enhanced transverse optical gradient force acting on Rayleigh particles immersed in a simple optical field formed by two linearly polarized plane waves. The optical gradient force acting on a conventional dielectric particle can be enhanced by two orders of magnitude via coating an extremely thin silver shell, whose thickness is only about one-tenth of the dielectric core. The analytical results based on the multipole expansion theory reveal that the enhanced optical gradient force comes mostly from the interaction between the incident field and the electric quadrupole excited in the core-shell particle. It is worth noting that the force expression within the dipole approximation commonly used for Rayleigh particles is invalid in our situation, even the particle is within the Rayleigh regime. In addition, both the optical potential energy and the optical trapping stiffness for the core-shell particle exhibit a great enhancement by two orders of magnitude stronger than a conventional dielectric particle and thus is favorable to a stable optical trapping. These results may extend the application range of optical tweezers and enrich optical manipulation techniques.
Calculation of the optical force on an infinite cylinder with arbitrary cross section by the boundary element method

Abstract:We have developed and implemented a numerical scheme to compute optical forces in two-dimensional (2D) structures based on the boundary integral equations, which are solved by the numerical boundary element method. We demonstrate the efficiency of this method by calculating the optical scattering and radiation pressures exerted on 2D objects under the illumination of both plane wave and cylindrical Gaussian beams. The results are validated by comparing to analytical Mie scattering results on circular cylinders. In the framework of this approach the object can be of arbitrary shape with dimensions either far larger, comparable, or much less than the wavelength concerned, and the constituent components can be either dielectric or metallic. We applied the method to study the resonance enhancement of optical forces and the effect of surface roughness on such enhancement. Surprisingly, we found that a cylinder with "controlled roughness" can give a stronger optical force than a smooth surface at resonance. (C) 2008 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:Evanescent waves, with their high energy density, intricate local momentum, and spatial distribution of spins, have been the subject of extensive recent study. These waves offer promising applications in near -field particle manipulation. Consequently, it becomes imperative to gain a deeper understanding of the impacts of scattering and gradient forces on particles in evanescent waves to enhance and refine the manipulation capabilities. In this study, we employ the multipole expansion theory to present analytical expressions for the scattering and gradient forces exerted on an isotropic sphere of any size and composition in multiple evanescent waves. The investigation of these forces reveals several unusual optomechanical phenomena. It is well known that the scattering force does not exist in counter -propagating homogeneous plane waves. Surprisingly, in multiple pairs of counter -propagating evanescent waves, the scattering force can arise due to the nonzero orbital momentum (OM) density and/or the curl part of the imaginary Poynting momentum (IPM) density. More importantly, it is found that the optical scattering force can be switched on and off by simply tuning the polarization. Furthermore, optical forces typically vary with spatial position in an interference field. However, in the interference field generated by evanescent waves, the gradient force becomes a spatial constant in the propagating plane as the particle's radius increases. This is attributed to the decisive role of the non-interference term of the electromagnetic energy density gradient. Our study establishes a comprehensive and rigorous theoretical foundation, propelling the advancement and optimization of optical manipulation techniques harnessed through multiple evanescent waves. Specifically, these insights hold promise in elevating trapping efficiency through precise control and manipulation of optical scattering and gradient forces, stimulating further explorations.
