Abstract:Diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging (DTI) provides a vivo way to describe the connectivity of the white matter fiber tracts in human brain by fiber tractography. However, the fiber tractography cannot offer a quantitative description of the white matter fiber tracts. The traditional manual segmentation method requires neuroanatomical expertise and significant time. It cannot be a universal and widely used method for segmentation of the complicated fiber tracts. An adaptive mean shift (AMS) clustering method was applied to cluster the fiber tracts into bundles automatically in this study. The fiber similarity measurement based on Euclidean distance was used in the clustering method. Locality-sensitive hashing (LSH) was applied to AMS to improve the efficiency of a high dimensional nearest-neighbor query. Due to the increasing amount of children who suffer from mental illnesses, the clustering of the pediatric DTI images was the research core of this study. The effectiveness and robustness of the AMS clustering algorithm for segmentation of fiber tracts were evaluated by different experiments. In addition, the experiment results showed that the AMS method is more efficient and effective than the K-means and Fuzzy C-means (FCM) clustering methods for the segmentation of fiber tracts in the real pediatric DTI images.
