Abstract:We demonstrate a novel type of miniature spectrometer based on a Fourier transform spectrometer(FTS) chip with a dense output array and a commercial photodetector(PD) array. The FTS chip has an output array cycle of 20 μm and consists of 51 Mach–Zehnder interferometers(MZIs), and the PD array is a commercial linear charged coupled device(CCD). An achromatic triplet lens is used to image the MZI output interferogram onto the CCD with a small aberration. Our experiment result shows that a free spectral range(FSR) from 489 nm to 584 nm and a retrieved spectral resolution of 3.5 nm at 532 nm are obtained. The achieved properties show that our spectrometer has the potential to outperform the best commercial compact one in terms of most performance indices.

Abstract:We present an ultra-compact spectrometer that uses a 10×10 hole array as the dispersive component. Our analysis shows that the two-dimensional intensity distribution can be modeled by a system of simultaneous linear equations when the size of each hole in the dispersive component has been pre-designed appropriately. One can readily recover the spectral contents of the input radiation by solving the linear equation system with regularized procedure. Experimental results show that the reconstruction range is at least within the entire visible band, which can be further extended if a near-infrared CCD is used. One therefore envisions strong potential for many wavelength analysis applications.

Abstract:Spectroscopy plays a pivotal role in various applications for industrial and commercial analysis. Conventional spectroscopy instruments include various discrete optical components like light sources, monochromators and detectors. These components are mechanically intricate and require space for the mechanisms that adjust and calibrate them, which increases the instrument’s footprint and make them less adjustable for portable applications. This drawback initiated the increase in the demand for miniatured spectral detection systems. Here, we present a low-cost ultra-compact miniaturized spectral detection system, which integrates both linear variable light sources, sample chambers and detectors within a centimetre-scale chip. The linear variable light generation across wavelengths ranging from 480 nm to 600 nm is achieved by stimulating different regions of the ZnCdSeS bandgap-graded semiconductor nanofilm with ultraviolet light. We demonstrate the capability of the system with precise identification of liquids. Our device overcomes the typical miniaturization limits imposed by discrete optical components, and long light paths in conventional spectroscopy instruments and opens up numerous potential applications across various fields due to its portability, ease of use, and lower cost.

Abstract:Miniaturized spectrometers have become increasingly important in modern analytical and diagnostic applications due to their compact size, portability, and versatility. Despite the surge in innovative designs for miniaturized spectrometers, significant challenges persist, particularly concerning manufacturing cost and efficiency when devices become smaller. Here we introduce an ultracompact spectrometer design that is both cost-effective and highly efficient. The core dispersion element of this new design is a graded photonic crystal film, which is engineered by applying gradient stress during its fabrication. The film shows bandstop transmission spectral profiles, akin to a notch filter, enhancing light throughput compared to conventional narrowband filters. The spectral analysis, with a resolution of 5 nm and operating within the wavelength range of 450-650 nm, is conducted by reconstructing the spectrum from a series of such notch transmission profiles along the graded photonic crystal film, utilizing a sophisticated algorithm. This approach not only reduces manufacturing costs but also significantly improves the sensitivity (with a light throughput efficiency of 71.05%) and overall performance of the limitations of current technology, opening up new avenues for applications in diverse fields.

Abstract:The miniaturized spectrometers are small and lightweight, which allows for integration into portable analytical instruments and consumer electronics, making them ideal for a wide range of applications, including scientific research, industrial process control, environmental monitoring, and healthcare diagnostics. Compared to other types of grating-based or Fourier-transform spectrometers, filter-based miniaturized spectrometers are relatively simple in design and often more cost-effective to manufacture. However, the spectral accuracy of conventional filter-based miniaturized spectrometers is sensitive to incident light angle. Besides, a large number of filters are required for broadband spectral detection in filter-based spectrometers, which increases cost and complexity. Here, we propose an angle-independent broadband miniaturized spectrometer, where the linear variable Fabry-Perot cavity is introduced to maintain spectral performance over a wide spectral range, and a slit combined with a diffuser is adapted to minimize the sensitivity of spectral accuracy to incident light angle. Our study defines a unique pathway to high-performance miniaturized spectrometers and makes them valuable tools for a wide range of applications requiring compact, cost-effective, and high-performance spectral analysis.

Abstract:This paper presents a monolithic spectrometer based on a plano-convex glass lens and achieves a resolution better than 0.7 nm in the spectral range of 550-720 nm. In the monolithic instrument, all components were fixed in the machined lens, resulting in a much smaller size and more stable assembly than traditional mini spectrometers. Additionally, a dual-band design was proposed and demonstrated to extend the spectral range from the visible band (550-700 nm) to the near-infrared band (800-900 nm), thus allowing more characteristic spectral fingerprints for improved material identification. The feasibility of compensating the residual aberrations caused by structural limitations with a specifically designed aberration-correcting grating is further detailed.

Abstract:The miniaturization of spectrometers have attracted much attention owning to the demand for portable or in situ spectral analysis in a wide variety of fields, but it is a great challenge to push them into practical applications due to high cost, complicated configuration, and sensitivity to external disturbance. We report on a miniature Fourier transform (FT) spectrometer based on fiber-tip Fizeau interferometer. Hand pulling or any other types of force can be used to drive optical path difference (OPD) scan. Interferences are monitored as a function of time by two photodetectors, one is used to detect the whole interferogram while the other to measure single-wavelength interferogram. In this design, the instantaneous interference intensity as well as OPD can be obtained in an accurate way so that the exact spatial interferogram of the incident spectrum can be worked out. Consequently, the incident spectrum can be retrieved by FT method. A resolution of 7.69 cm-1 in the wavelength range of 1400 nm ∼ 1700 nm is achieved. Experimental results show that the performance of our device is comparable to the commercial benchtop spectrometer. Our device is independent of the complicated fabrication procedures, easy of usage, and cost effective. We envision that the proposed design will inspire a new concept for constructing simple and cheap spectrometers that is well suited for practical applications.

Abstract:Miniaturizing spectrometers for compact and cost-effective mobile platforms is a major challenge in current spectroscopy research, where conventional spectrometers are impractical due to their bulky footprint. Existing miniaturized designs primarily rely on precalibrated response functions of nanophotonic structures to encode spectral information captured in a snapshot by detector arrays. Accurate spectrum reconstruction is achieved through computational techniques, but this requires precise component design, high-precision fabrication, and calibration. We propose an ultra-simplified computational spectrometer that employs a one-to-broadband diffraction decomposition strategy facilitated by a numerical regularized transform that depends only on the spectrum of the diffracted radiation. The key feature of our design is the use of a simple, arbitrarily shaped pinhole as the partial disperser, eliminating the need for complex encoding designs and full spectrum calibration. Our spectrometer achieves a reconstructed spectral peak location accuracy of better than 1 nm over a 200 nm bandwidth and excellent resolution for peaks separated by 3 nm in a bimodal spectrum, all within a compact footprint of under half an inch. Notably, our approach also reveals a breakthrough in broadband coherent diffractive imaging without requiring any prior knowledge of the broadband illumination spectrum, assumptions of non-dispersive specimens, or correction for detector quantum efficiency.

Abstract:Miniaturized spectrometers have emerged as pivotal tools in numerous scientific and industrial applications, offering advantages such as portability, cost-effectiveness, and the capability for onsite analysis. Despite these significant benefits, miniaturized spectrometers face critical challenges, particularly in sensitivity. Reduced dimensions often lead to compromises in optical path length and component quality, which can diminish detection limits and limit their applications in areas such as low-light-level measurements. Here we developed a compact spectrometer that integrates an array of photonic crystal slab filters with band-stop spectral transmission characteristics into an image sensor. Compared to traditional gratings or bandpass filter strategies, where each detector can only read light of a single wavelength component, our band-stop strategy allows each detector to read the light of all wavelengths except the band-stop wavelength. This maximizes energy extraction from incident signals, significantly improving the sensitivity of the spectrometer. Spectral reconstruction is achieved mathematically using pre-calibrated band-stop responses combined with a single coded image. Our spectrometer delivers a spectral resolution of 1.9 nm and demonstrates sensitivity more than ten times greater than that of conventional grating spectrometers during fluorescence spectroscopy of Ascaris lumbricoides. The design is fully compatible with complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology, allowing for mass production at low costs and thus promising broad deployment in sensitive applications.

Abstract:Optical spectroscopy plays an essential role across scientific research and industry for non-contact materials analysis1-3, increasingly through in-situ or portable platforms4-6. However, when considering low-light-level applications, conventional spectrometer designs necessitate a compromise between their resolution and sensitivity7,8, especially as device and detector dimensions are scaled down. Here, we report on a miniaturizable spectrometer platform where light throughput onto the detector is instead enhanced as the resolution is increased. This planar, CMOS-compatible platform is based around metasurface encoders designed to exhibit photonic bound states in the continuum9, where operational range can be altered or extended simply through adjusting geometric parameters. This system can enhance photon collection efficiency by up to two orders of magnitude versus conventional designs; we demonstrate this sensitivity advantage through ultra-low-intensity fluorescent and astrophotonic spectroscopy. This work represents a step forward for the practical utility of spectrometers, affording a route to integrated, chip-based devices that maintain high resolution and SNR without requiring prohibitively long integration times.

Abstract:Miniaturized spectrometry system is playing an essential role for materials analysis in the development of in-situ or portable sensing platforms across research and industry. However, there unavoidably exists trade-offs between the resolution and operation bandwidth as the device scale down. Here, we report an extreme miniaturized computational photonic molecule (PM) spectrometer utilizing the diverse spectral characteristics and mode-hybridization effect of split eigenfrequencies and super-modes, which effectively eliminates the inherent periodicity and expands operation bandwidth with ultra-high spectral resolution. These results of dynamic control of the frequency, amplitude, and phase of photons in the photonic multi-atomic systems, pave the way to the development of benchtop sensing platforms for applications previously unfeasible due to resolution-bandwidth-footprint limitations, such as in gas sensing or nanoscale biomedical sensing.

Abstract:Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is a widely used characterization technique for studying chemical compositions and light-matter interactions in the infrared range. However, it remains challenging to use conventional FTIR equipment to characterize materials that are environmentally sensitive and/or have rough surfaces due to their dynamic response to external stimuli (e.g., humidity) and light scattering from the sample surface. Here, we describe an approach enabling quantitative infrared spectroscopy measurements of these challenging samples, including transmittance, reflectance, and emissivity. We designed and 3D-printed a miniaturized environmental chamber that can be directly inserted into the sample holder of a conventional integrating sphere to perform total transmission and reflection measurements in controlled environments. Moreover, a calibration method was developed to exclude light scattering from rough surfaces of the sample and the distortion created by infrared windows. To illustrate the potential application of this method, we have performed quantitative infrared measurements, both specular and diffusive, on a sapphire standard reference with a specular surface, as well as a textile sample that has a rough surface and is dynamically responsive to changes in humidity. The calibrated results measured with the equipped chamber match those measured without the IR windows, demonstrating the viability of our environmental chamber and the proposed calibration method. This quantitative infrared spectroscopy measurement technique may help advance fields such as metasurfaces and adaptive textiles, where samples are often rough, dynamically responsive, and/or environmentally sensitive.

Abstract:We propose an optical spectrometer using a hybrid grating-Fresnel (G-Fresnel) diffractive optical element. Theoretical simulation shows that a spectral resolution of approximately 1 nm can be potentially achieved with a millimeter-sized G-Fresnel. A proof-of-concept G-Fresnel-based spectrometer with subnanometer spectral resolution is experimentally demonstrated. The proposed method provides a promising new way for realizing compact optical spectrometers.

Abstract:Conventional benchtop spectrometers with bulky dispersive optics and long optical path lengths display limitations where the significance of miniaturization, real-time detection, and low cost transcend the ultrafine resolution and wide spectral range. Here, we demonstrate a miniaturized all-dielectric ultracompact film spectrometer based on deep learning working in the single-shot mode. The scheme employs 16 spectral encoders with simple five-layer film stacks where merely the thickness of the intermediate high-index modulation layer is varied to realize unique encoded transmission spectra. Structural parameters as well as transmission spectra of the filters are predesigned to guarantee weak correlation and highly efficient encoding. Leveraging a trained reconstruction network, the absolute spectra of various nonluminous samples are successfully reconstructed excluding the emitting spectrum of the light source and the spectral response of the detector. The remarkable reconstructed spectral imaging result for the color board is presented and the reconstructed spectra match well with the measured ones for different patches using the identical network. We utilized the least number of spectral encoders ever since to guarantee efficient encoding, along with the single thickness-variant modulation layer, which shows potential for mass, rapid, large-area production by combining deposition with nanoimprint. Instead of the synthetic Gaussian line shape spectra, a training dataset composed of diverse spectrum types is adopted to achieve fine generalization of the trained reconstruction network. In addition, by retraining the neural network, the reconstruction network is modified to fit for the actual filter functions of the spectral encoders, thus better reconstruction performance. The proposed miniaturized spectrometer has great prospects in the fields of consumer electronics, environmental monitoring, and disaster prevention.

Abstract:By using a preaggregated silver nanoparticle monolayer film and an infrared sensor card, we demonstrate a miniature spectrometer design that covers a broad wavelength range from visible to infrared with high spectral resolution. The spectral contents of an incident probe beam are reconstructed by solving a matrix equation with a smoothing simulated annealing algorithm. The proposed spectrometer offers significant advantages over current instruments that are based on Fourier transform and grating dispersion, in terms of size, resolution, spectral range, cost and reliability. The spectrometer contains three components, which are used for dispersion, frequency conversion and detection. Disordered silver nanoparticles in dispersion component reduce the fabrication complexity. An infrared sensor card in the conversion component broaden the operational spectral range of the system into visible and infrared bands. Since the CCD used in the detection component provides very large number of intensity measurements, one can reconstruct the final spectrum with high resolution. An additional feature of our algorithm for solving the matrix equation, which is suitable for reconstructing both broadband and narrowband signals, we have adopted a smoothing step based on a simulated annealing algorithm. This algorithm improve the accuracy of the spectral reconstruction.

Abstract:We propose a compact, miniature static Fourier transform imaging spectropolarimeter (SFTISP). The spectropolarimeter is formed by cascading two high order crystal retarders and a Wollaston birefringent interferometer. Compared with previous instruments, the most significant advantage of the described model is that without any internal moving parts, electrically controllable or micro-components, the entire wavelength-dependent state of polarization (SOP) is acquired simultaneously along a one-dimensional spatial image by a single snapshot. Also, we show that in this configuration we can benefit from the advantages of the element: compact, robust and high throughput of the Wollaston birefringent interferometer. The theory of the birefringent SFTISP is provided, followed by details of its specific embodiment. A simulation and an experimental demonstration of the sensor are also presented. The core optics of the breadboard sensor is as small as 8x Phi 3.5 cm(3) in size. The operation spectral range is from 450 nm to 850 nm. The experiment results were shown to yield accuracy better than 3% over most of the operation spectral band.
