Abstract:As a result of a booming economy and population agglomeration, rapid suburbanization can be seen in many Chinese mega-cities. This paper investigates activity spaces of individuals in the Shangdi-Qinghe area, one suburban center of Beijing, using data from a 7-day GPS-based activity travel survey. The respondents include both residents and workers there, who are categorized into three different groups based on their job-housing locations: living in Shangdi while working elsewhere (R), working in Shangdi while living elsewhere (W), and both living and working in Shangdi (RW). Activity spaces of the three groups are compared through a descriptive analysis. Furthermore, panel regression models are employed to investigate the influences of socio demographics and land use indicators on individual’s activity space.
