Abstract:We propose an analytical method to calculate the vorticity power spectrum of the intergalactic gas peculiar momentum in the non-linear regime and thus to calculate the kinetic Sunyaev Zel'dovich effect. Our results show that the KSZ power spectrum peaks around l = 3000 with DeltaT similar or equal to 1.5 muK.

Abstract:We propose to use spatial correlations of the kinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich (KSZ) flux as an estimator of the peculiar velocity power spectrum. In contrast with conventional techniques, our new method does not require measurements of the thermal SZ signal or the X-ray temperature. Moreover, this method has the special advantage that the expected systematic errors are always subdominant to statistical errors on all scales and redshifts of interest. We show that future large sky coverage KSZ surveys may allow a peculiar velocity power spectrum estimates of an accuracy reaching similar to 10 per cent.

Abstract:We show that by directly correlating the cluster kinetic Sunyaev Zeldovich (KSZ) flux, the cluster peculiar velocity power spectrum can be measured to $\sim 10%$ accuracy by future large sky coverage KSZ surveys. This method is almost free of systemics entangled in the usual velocity inversion method. The direct correlation brings extra information of density and velocity clustering. We utilize these information to construct two indicators of the Hubble constant and comoving angular distance and propose a novel method to constrain cosmology.

Abstract:Cosmological transverse momentum fields, whose directions are perpendicular to Fourier wave vectors, induce temperature anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background via the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect. The transverse momentum power spectrum contains the four-point function of density and velocity fields, . In the post-reionization epoch, nonlinear effects dominate in the power spectrum. We use perturbation theory and cosmological N-body simulations to calculate this nonlinearity. We derive the next-to-leading order expression for the power spectrum with a particular emphasis on the connected term that has been ignored in the literature. While the contribution from the connected term on small scales (k > 0.1 h Mpc(-1)) is subdominant relative to the unconnected term, we find that its contribution to the kSZ power spectrum at l = 3000 at z < 6 can be as large as ten percent of the unconnected term, which would reduce the allowed contribution from the reionization epoch (z > 6) by twenty percent. The power spectrum of transverse momentum on large scales is expected to scale as k(2) as a consequence of momentum conservation. We show that both the leading and the next-to-leading order terms satisfy this scaling. In particular, we find that both of the unconnected and connected terms are necessary to reproduce k(2).

Abstract:The Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect (SZ effect) is a complete probe of ionized baryons, the majority of which are likely hiding in the intergalactic medium. We ran a 5123 Λ cold dark matter simulation using a moving mesh hydro code to compute the statistics of the thermal and kinetic SZ effect such as the power spectra and measures of non-Gaussianity. The thermal SZ power spectrum has a very broad peak at multipole l ~ 2000-104 with temperature fluctuations ΔT ~ 15 μK. The power spectrum is consistent with available observations and suggests a high σ8 ≃ 1.0 and a possible role for nongravitational heating. The non-Gaussianity is significant and increases the cosmic variance of the power spectrum by a factor of ~5 for l < 6000. We explore optimal drift-scan survey strategies for the Array for Microwave Background Anisotropy and their dependence on cosmology. For SZ power spectrum estimation, we find that the optimal sky coverage for 1000 hr of integration time is several hundred square degrees. One achieves an accuracy better than 40% in the SZ measurement of the power spectrum and an accuracy better than 20% in the cross-correlation with Sloan galaxies for 2000 < l < 5000. For cluster searches, the optimal scan rate is around 280 hr deg-2 with a cluster detection rate of one every 7 hr, allowing for a false positive rate of 20% and better than 30% accuracy in the cluster SZ distribution function measurement.

Abstract:The Copernican principle remains largely unproven at Gpc radial scale and above. Generally, violations of this type cause a first-order anisotropic kinetic Sunyaev Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect. Here we show that, if large-scale radial inhomogeneities have amplitude large enough to explain the 'dark energy' phenomena, the induced kSZ power spectrum will be orders of magnitude larger than the Atacama cosmology telescope/South Pole telescope upper limit. This single test rules out the void model as the cause of the apparent cosmic acceleration, confirms the Copernican principle on Gpc radial scale and above, and closes a loophole in the standard cosmology.
Kinetic Sunyaev Zel'dovich velocity reconstruction from Planck and unWISE

Abstract:The kinetic Sunyaev Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect is a blackbody cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature anisotropy induced by Thomson scattering off free electrons in bulk motion with respect to the CMB rest frame. The statistically anisotropic cross-correlation between the CMB and galaxy surveys encodes the radial bulk velocity (more generally, the remote dipole field), which can be efficiently reconstructed using a quadratic estimator. Here, we develop and implement a quadratic estimator for the remote dipole field to data from the Planck satellite and the unWISE galaxy redshift catalog. With this data combination, we forecast a $\sim 1$-$\sigma$ detection within $\Lambda$CDM assuming a simple model for the distribution of free electrons. Using reconstructions based on individual frequency temperature maps, we characterize the impact of foregrounds, concluding that they can be effectively mitigated by masking and removing the estimator monopole. We demonstrate that reconstructions based on component-separated CMB maps have no detectable biases from foregrounds or systematics at the level of the expected statistical error. We use these reconstructions to constrain the multiplicative optical depth bias to $b_v < 1.40$ at $68 \%$ confidence. Our fiducial signal model with $b_v =1$ is consistent with this measurement. Our results support an optimistic future for kSZ velocity reconstruction with near-term datasets.

Abstract:We apply the hierarchical clustering model and nonlinear perturbation theory to the cosmological density and temperature fields. This allows us to calculate the intergalactic gas-pressure power spectrum, Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) anisotropy power spectrum, skewness, and related statistics. Then we show the effect of the nongravitational heating. Our model confirms recent simulations yielding a mass-weighted gas temperature g ~ 0.35 keV and reproduces the power spectra found in these simulations. While the SZ effect contains only angular information, we show that it is possible to extract the full time-resolved gas-pressure power spectrum when combined with galaxy photometric redshift surveys by using a variation on the cross-correlation. This method further allows the disentanglement of the gravitational and the nongravitational heating.

Abstract:The kinematic and thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ and tSZ) effects probe the abundance and thermodynamics of ionized gas in galaxies and clusters. We present a new hybrid estimator to measure the kSZ effect by combining cosmic microwave background temperature anisotropy maps with photometric and spectroscopic optical survey data. The method interpolates a velocity reconstruction from a spectroscopic catalog at the positions of objects in a photometric catalog, which makes it possible to leverage the high number density of the photometric catalog and the precision of the spectroscopic survey. Combining this hybrid kSZ estimator with a measurement of the tSZ effect simultaneously constrains the density and temperature of free electrons in the photometrically selected galaxies. Using the 1000 deg2 of overlap between the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) Data Release 5, the first three years of data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES), and the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) Data Release 12, we detect the kSZ signal at 4.8${\sigma}$ and reject the null (no-kSZ) hypothesis at 5.1${\sigma}$. This corresponds to 2.0${\sigma}$ per 100,000 photometric objects with a velocity field based on a spectroscopic survey with 1/5th the density of the photometric catalog. For comparison, a recent ACT analysis using exclusively spectroscopic data from BOSS measured the kSZ signal at 2.1${\sigma}$ per 100,000 objects. Our derived constraints on the thermodynamic properties of the galaxy halos are consistent with previous measurements. With future surveys, such as the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument and the Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time, we expect that this hybrid estimator could result in measurements with significantly better signal-to-noise than those that rely on spectroscopic data alone.

The SZ effect with anisotropic distributions and high energy electrons

Abstract:Future observations of the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect promise ever improving measurements in terms of both sensitivity and angular resolution. As such, it is increasingly relevant to model `higher-order' contributions to the SZ effect. This work examines the effects of high-energy non-thermal electron distributions and those of anisotropic electron and photon distributions on the SZ signals. Analytic forms of the anisotropic scattering kernels for photons and electrons have been derived and investigated. We present a method for determining the anisotropic contributions through a spherical harmonic decomposition to arbitrary angular multipoles, and discuss the behaviour of these scattering kernels. We then carry out an exploration of various simplistic models of high energy non-thermal electron distributions, and examine their anisotropic behaviour. The kinematic SZ in the relativistic regime is studied using the kernel formulation allowing us to clarifying the role of kinematic corrections to the scattering optical depth. We finally present a release of an updated and refined version of SZpack including a new integrated Python interface and new modules for the calculation of various SZ signals, including those described in this paper.

Abstract:The interaction between Dark Matter and Dark Energy has been proposed as a mechanism to alleviate the coincidence problem. We analyze its effects on the evolution of the gravitational and the peculiar velocity fields. We find that for different model parameters peculiar velocities vary from a factor five times smaller to two times larger than in the ΛCDM cosmological model at the same scales. We propose two new observables sensitive to such interactions based on their effect on the velocity field. We compare the effects on peculiar velocities with those on the Integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect demonstrating that velocities are more sensitive to the interaction. We show that the current upper limits on the amplitude of the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich power spectrum of temperature anisotropies provide constraints on the coupling within the dark sectors that are consistent with those obtained previously from the Cosmic Microwave Background and galaxy clusters. In particular, we show that Atacama Cosmology Telescope and South Pole Telescope data favor the decay of Dark Energy into Dark Matter, as required to solve the coincidence problem.
The Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect and Large-Scale Structure

Abstract:The thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect is the inverse-Compton scattering of cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons off hot, ionized electrons, primarily located in galaxy groups and clusters. Recent years have seen immense improvement in our ability to probe cosmology and the astrophysics of the intracluster medium using the tSZ signal. Here, I describe cross-correlations of the tSZ effect measured in Planck data with gravitational lensing maps from Planck and the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Lensing Survey, as well as hydrodynamical simulations which show that such measurements do not probe "missing baryons," but rather the pressure of ionized gas in groups and clusters over a wide range of halo masses and redshifts. I also present recent measurements of higher-order tSZ statistics using data from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope, which yield strong constraints on the amplitude of density fluctuations. I describe stacking analyses of tSZ data from Planck, focusing on the behavior of the gas pressure in low-mass galaxy groups. I close with a prediction for the tSZ monopole, including relativistic corrections, which is the largest guaranteed spectral distortion signal for the proposed Primordial Inflation Explorer mission. The tSZ monopole will yield a direct measurement of the total thermal energy in ionized electrons in the observable universe.

Abstract:The kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect is potentially a powerful tool that can be used to search for missing baryons. However, the kSZ signal is overwhelmed by various contaminations and the cosmological application is hampered by the loss of redshift information as a result of the projection effect. We propose a kSZ tomography method to alleviate these problems, with the aid of galaxy spectroscopic redshift surveys. We propose to estimate the large-scale peculiar velocity through the three-dimensional (3D) galaxy distribution, to weigh it using the 3D galaxy density and to adopt the product projected along the line of sight with a proper weighting as an estimator of the true kSZ temperature fluctuation Theta. Because the underlying directional dependence in the estimator closely resembles that in the true kSZ signal Theta, is tightly correlated with Theta. Thus, it avoids the problem of null correlation between the galaxy density and Theta, which prohibits the kSZ extraction through the usual density-cosmic microwave background (CMB) two-point cross-correlation measurement. Thus, we propose to measure the kSZ signal through the cross-correlation. This approach has a number of advantages. (i) Because of the underlying directional dependence of , it is uncorrelated with the primary CMB, the thermal SZ effect and astrophysical contaminations, such as dusty star-forming galaxies. Thus, the cross-correlation picks up the kSZ signal in the SZ survey in a clean manner. (ii) With the aid of galaxy redshifts, the cross-correlation recovers the redshift information of the kSZ signal and allows for a more detailed investigation of missing baryons. (iii) As galaxy surveys usually have a high signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio, the S/N ratio of the kSZ measurement through the cross-correlation can be significantly improved.We test the proposed kSZ tomography against non-adiabatic and adiabatic hydrodynamical simulations. We confirm that is indeed tightly correlated with Theta at k less than or similar to 1 h Mpc-1, although non-linearities in the density and velocity fields and non-linear redshift distortion do weaken the tightness of the correlation. We further quantify the reconstruction noise in from galaxy distribution shot noise. Based on these results, we quantify the applicability of the proposed kSZ tomography for future surveys. We find that, in combination with the BigBOSS-N spectroscopic redshift survey, the Planck CMB experiment will be able to detect the kSZ effect with an overall significance of similar to 50 Sigma and further measure its redshift distribution at many redshift bins over 0 < z < 2.
The dark flow induced small scale kinetic Sunyaev Zel'dovich effect

Abstract:Recently Kashlinsky et al. 2008, 2010 reported a discovery of a $\sim 10^3$ km/$s$ bulk flow of the universe out to $z\simeq 0.3$, through the dark flow induced CMB dipole in directions of clusters. We point out that, if this dark flow exists, it will also induce observable CMB temperature fluctuations at multipole $\ell\sim 10^3$, through modulation of the inhomogeneous electron distribution on the uniform dark flow. The induced small scale kinetic Sunyaev Zel'dovich (SZ) effect will reach $\sim 1\muk^2$ at multipole $10^3\la \ell\la 10^4$, only a factor of $\sim 2$ smaller than the conventional kinetic SZ effect. Furthermore, it will be correlated with the large scale structure (LSS) and its correlation with 2MASS galaxy distribution reaches $0.3 \mu$K at $\ell=10^3$, under a directional dependent optimal weighting scheme. We estimate that, WMAP plus 2MASS should already be able to detect this dark flow induced small scale kinetic SZ effect with $\sim 6\sigma$ confidence. Deeper galaxy surveys such as SDSS can further improve the measurement. Planck plus existing galaxy surveys can reach $\ga 14\sigma$ detection. Existing CMB-LSS cross correlation measurements shall be reanalyzed to test the existence of the dark flow and, if it exists, shall be used to eliminate possible bias on the integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect measurement through the CMB-LSS cross correlation.

Abstract:We report a similar to 5.2 sigma detection of the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect in Fourier space, by combining the DESI galaxy groups and the Planck data. We use the density-weighted pairwise kSZ power spectrum as the summary statistic, and the detailed procedure of its measurement is presented in this paper. Meanwhile, we analyze the redshift space group density power spectrum to constrain its bias parameters and photo-z uncertainties. These best-fitted parameters are substituted to a nonlinear kSZ model, and we fit the measured kSZ power spectrum with this model to constrain the group optical depth tau over bar . Selected by a varying lower mass threshold M th, the galaxy group catalogs with different median masses ( M similar to ) are constructed from the Data Release 9 data of the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys. M similar to spans a wide range of similar to 1013-1014 M circle dot/h and the heaviest M similar to similar to 1014 M circle dot/h is larger than those of most other kSZ detections. When the aperture photometric filter radius theta AP is set to be 4.' 2, the M similar to=1.75x1013 M circle dot/h group sample at the median redshift z similar to=0.64 has the highest kSZ detection signal-to-noise ratio = 5.2. By fitting tau over bar s from various samples against their M similar to s, we obtain a linear log tau over bar -logM similar to relation: log tau over bar =gamma(logM similar to-14)+log beta , in which gamma = 0.55 +/- 0.1. We also vary the aperture photometric filter radius and measure the tau over bar profiles of group samples, whose constraints on the baryon distribution within and around dark matter halos will be discussed in a companion paper.
The Probability Distribution Function of the Sunyaev‐Zel’dovich Power Spectrum: an Analytical Approach

Abstract:The Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) signal is highly non-Gaussian, so the SZ power spectrum (along with the mean y-parameter) does not provide a complete description of the SZ effect. Therefore, SZ-based constraints on cosmological parameters and on cluster gastrophysics which assume Gaussianity will be biased. We derive an analytic expression for the n-point joint PDF of the SZ power spectrum. Our derivation, which is based on the halo model, has several advantages: it is expressed in an integral form which allows quick computation; it is applicable to any given survey and any given angular scale; and it is straightforward to incorporate many of the complexities which arise when modeling the SZ signal. To illustrate, we use our expression to estimate p(C-l), the one-point PDF of the SZ power spectrum. For small sky coverage (applicable to BIMA/CBI and the Sunyaev Zel'dovich Array experiments), our analysis shows that p(C-l) on the several arcminute scale is expected to be strongly skewed, peaking at a value well below the mean and with a long tail which extends to high C-l values. In the limit of large sky coverage (applicable to the South Pole Telescope and Planck), p(C-l) approaches a Gaussian form. However, even in this limit, the variance of the power spectrum is very different from the naive Gaussian-based estimate, because different l models are strongly correlated, making the cosmic variance of the SZ bandpower much larger than the naive estimate. Our analysis should also be useful for modeling the PDF of the power spectrum induced by gravitational lensing at large l.

Abstract:We use combined South Pole Telescope (SPT)+Planck temperature maps to analyze the circumgalactic medium (CGM) encompassing 138,235 massive, quiescent 0.5 $\leq$ z $\leq$ 1.5 galaxies selected from data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) and Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). Images centered on these galaxies were cut from the 1.85 arcmin resolution maps with frequency bands at 95, 150, and 220 GHz. The images were stacked, filtered, and fit with a gray-body dust model to isolate the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) signal, which is proportional to the total energy contained in the CGM of the galaxies. We separate these $M_{\star} = 10^{10.9} M_\odot$ - $10^{12} M_\odot$ galaxies into 0.1 dex stellar mass bins, detecting tSZ per bin up to $5.6\sigma$ and a total signal-to-noise ratio of $10.1\sigma$. We also detect dust with an overall signal-to-noise ratio of $9.8\sigma$, which overwhelms the tSZ at 150GHz more than in other lower-redshift studies. We correct for the $0.16$ dex uncertainty in the stellar mass measurements by parameter fitting for an unconvolved power-law energy-mass relation, $E_{\rm therm} = E_{\rm therm,peak} \left(M_\star/M_{\star,{\rm peak}} \right)^\alpha$, with the peak stellar mass distribution of our selected galaxies defined as $M_{\star,{\rm peak}}= 2.3 \times 10^{11} M_\odot$. This yields an $E_{\rm therm,peak}= 5.98_{-1.00}^{+1.02} \times 10^{60}$ erg and $\alpha=3.77_{-0.74}^{+0.60}$. These are consistent with $z \approx 0$ observations and within the limits of moderate models of active galactic nuclei (AGN) feedback. We also compute the radial profile of our full sample, which is similar to that recently measured at lower-redshift by Schaan et al. (2021).

Abstract:We report a ∼5.2σ detection of the kinetic Sunyaev–Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect in Fourier space, by combining the DESI galaxy groups and the Planck data. We use the density-weighted pairwise kSZ power spectrum as the summary statistic, and the detailed procedure of its measurement is presented in this paper. Meanwhile, we analyze the redshift space group density power spectrum to constrain its bias parameters and photo-z uncertainties. These best-fitted parameters are substituted to a nonlinear kSZ model, and we fit the measured kSZ power spectrum with this model to constrain the group optical depth τ ̄ . Selected by a varying lower mass threshold M th , the galaxy group catalogs with different median masses ( M ̃ ) are constructed from the Data Release 9 data of the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys. M ̃ spans a wide range of ∼10 13 –10 14 M ⊙ /h and the heaviest M ̃ ∼ 10 14 M ⊙ / h is larger than those of most other kSZ detections. When the aperture photometric filter radius θ AP is set to be 4.′2, the M ̃ = 1.75 × 10 13 M ⊙ / h group sample at the median redshift z ̃ = 0.64 has the highest kSZ detection signal-to-noise ratio = 5.2.
