Abstract:Controlling morphology of liquids on solid surfaces plays an important role in both fundamental research and practical applications. We found that, the shape of the liquid after contact between a droplet and a surface could be tuned by designing the hydrophilic micropillar arrays forming this surface. Such a wetting behavior is a result of imbibition in the micropillars, leading to specific final spreading distance and pattern of the droplet. During the spreading, the morphology of the droplet is controlled by both the arrangement and shape of the micropillars. The experimental results indicated that the surface energy barriers caused by the micropillar edges was a key factor accounting for the anisotropic spreading of the liquid. Moreover, the shape of the meniscus at the front location of the spreading liquid was rebuilt based on computational simulation, which agreed well with the experimental data. Interesting, the time-dependence of the displacement of the liquid transport at the edges was found to be different from that of a wicking film. Theoretical models were accordingly proposed to reveal the shape formation of liquids on such micropillar-structured surfaces.
Long-distance Liquid Transport Along Fibers Arising From Plateau-Rayleigh Instability

Abstract:Liquid mobility on fibers is critical to the effectiveness of fiber matrices in face masks, water harvesting and aerosol filtration, but is typically affected by Plateau-Rayleigh instability. However, the spontaneous flow within precursor films arising from this instability has been largely overlooked, particularly regarding its fundamental flow pattern and the potential for liquid mobilization. This study reveals the pivotal role of spontaneous flow on ribbon-like fibers in enhancing liquid transport. The non-axisymmetric curvature of these fibers induces long-wave instabilities, generating a sustained flow that enables film-wise transport over centimeter-scale distances at velocities of several millimeters per second. Using particle-image velocimetry, we uncover intricate hydrodynamics, including opposing flows within the film and organized vortices in the shear layer, driven by capillary effects at the liquid-vapor interfaces. Building on these insights, we demonstrate a network structure capable of achieving planar liquid transport over a 10 cm2 area. The ribbon-like fibers investigated exhibit the longest transport distances relative to biomimetic structures and aerodynamic propulsion. The unique transport dynamics and planar configuration of the fiber matrix offer substantial potential for advanced fiber-based liquid transport systems, with enhanced mass/heat transfer, laminar mixing and aerodynamic characteristics.

Abstract:This paper presents a simulation framework for liquid wetting across porous textiles with anisotropic inner structure. The textile is composed by intersected fibers and forms capillary pores in the void space, which provides an important force to drive the diffusion by capillary action. The influence of the properties of the textile on the wetting process, such as contact angle, hygroscopicity and porosity, is considered into the liquid wetting process in detail. By liquid-textile coupling, the wetting process is simulated through liquid absorption/desorption by fiber and liquid diffusion in the means of inner fiber, intersected fibers and capillary action. The second Fick's law is used to describe the non-steady wetting process. Based on the SPH method for fluid simulation, this framework can simulate the liquid wetting across the porous textile by dripping single or multiple drops of water. We also demonstrate the wetting process with the influence of different properties of the textile.
Directional Transport of Centimeter-Scale Object on Anisotropic Microcilia Surface under Water

Abstract:Natural organisms such as cactus spines or trachea cilia have unique directional transport ability, owing to their anisotropic surface structures or asymmetric motion. However, most artificial interfacial materials are incapable of transporting macroscale object underwater. Herein, we report that anisotropic microcilia arrays, composed of cobalt fine powder and PDMS, can successfully transport the centimeter-scale hydrogel underwater by periodically asymmetric stroke under alternative magnetic field. Reciprocal collective stroke of anisotropic microcilia can generate directional flow, propelling the centimeter-scale hydrogel slice forward. Accompanying computational simulation results are consistent with the directional transport behaviors observed in our experiments. This study provides a clue to design artificial anisotropic interfacial materials with capability of transporting macroscale object at low Reynolds number.
Hierarchical Capillary Adhesion of Microcantilevers or Hairs

Abstract:As a result of capillary forces, animal hairs, carbon nanotubes or nanowires of a periodically or randomly distributed array often assemble into hierarchical structures. In this paper, the energy method is adopted to analyse the capillary adhesion of microsized hairs, which are modelled as clamped microcantilevers wetted by liquids. The critical conditions for capillary adhesion of two hairs, three hairs or two bundles of hairs are derived in terms of Young's contact angle, elastic modulus and geometric sizes of the beams. Then, the hierarchical capillary adhesion of hairs is addressed. It is found that for multiple hairs or microcantilevers, the system tends to take a hierarchical structure as a result of the minimization of the total potential energy of the system. The level number of structural hierarchy increases with the increase in the number of hairs if they are sufficiently long. Additionally, we performed experiments to verify our theoretical solutions for the adhesion of microbeams.

Abstract:Ensuring the efficiency and safety of firefighters relies heavily on optimizing the moisture permeability of their suits. Inspired by the intricate multi-level network structure of plant transpiration, this study utilized electrospinning technology to prepare biomimetic vascular, veined multilevel branched network quick-drying nanofiber membranes. Combining X-ray microtomography (XMT) and the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM), this study conducted a 3D reconstruction of the microstructure of quick-drying nanofiber materials, establishing a characterization method for moisture permeability behavior from a micro to mesoscale perspective and conducted numerical simulations. The results indicate that in the nanofiber membrane, the fiber diameter and pore size between fibers gradually decrease from the inlet to the outlet in the forward flow direction (from PET side to PAN side). At the same displacement pressure difference, the average and maximum flow rates of forward percolation were significantly greater than reverse percolation (from PAN side to PET side); in the initial stage of forward percolation (x < 11), the flow rate first increased and then gradually decreased, with the rate of increase (k = 0.712623) significantly higher than the rate of decrease (k'=0.001102), while in reverse percolation, the flow rate continuously increased throughout the process; These phenomena are primarily due to different startup pressure gradients. Furthermore, the analysis of moisture transport performance indicates that the fiber membrane exhibits highly efficient unidirectional moisture transport capability. This study expands the understanding of the moisture permeability mechanism of nanofibers, which is significant for enhancing the protective performance and comfort of quick-drying firefighter fabrics.

Abstract:<section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Background</h3><p>Hair fibers may be either oriented in a common direction or randomly arranged. Fiber arrangement as well as cosmetic treatment control the sensorial perception. The present study explores the respective influence of these two aspects by predicting the product performance in terms of tactile perception.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Materials and Methods</h3><p>Friction forces between hair swatches of different curl patterns using a finger‐like probe have been measured to better mimic real‐life hair/finger contact. Measurements of fiber alignment, hair diameter (thickness), and compression tests were performed on natural and treated swatches to assess the respective weight of these parameters.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Results</h3><p>Conditioned hair exhibit an adhesive behavior measured at the start of the frictional movement. Conversely, natural hair is influenced by fiber reorientation. After a few seconds, friction‐related signals stabilize. Thus, the averaged friction forces do not only depend on hair thickness, but increase with a decreased alignment of the fibers.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Conclusions</h3><p>Intrinsic (diameter/curliness) and external (orientation/ friction/compression) characteristics allow to define a model of "macroscopic" roughness linked to the sensorial characterization. Abstract:Since superhydrophobic surfaces show extremely low friction with water, they have been tried for drag-reduction purpose for ships or pipe systems for liquid transportation in recent years. However, the superhydrophobic surfaces combining comprehensive performance, feasible fabrication method as well as low manufacturing cost are still big issues, limiting their real applications. Inspired by the fine hairs and cilia of creature, we prepare hairy surfaces by electrostatic flocking and subsequent surface modification. The optimal hairy surfaces exhibit excellent superhydrophobicity, satisfactory abrasion resistance that is superior to the superhydrophobic surfaces ever reported, long-term underwater stability with/without additional air pressure and good drag-reduction efficiency at low shearing rates. The correlations between microstructure of samples and key properties are analyzed. This work may shed new light on design and preparation of mechanical robust, underwater stable and drag-reduction surfaces that can be easily manufactured in large scale.

Abstract:With the increasing of quality of life, consumer's expectations on high value products are not only on functionality and usability, but also on emotional characteristics. In this work, we developed an in vivo methodology, based on a self-assembled finger friction test apparatus and systematical influence factor investigation, for studying the interfacial interactions between human skin and hair, with respect to tactile friction and sensory properties of human hair bundles before and after using hair care products. It was found that, the tactile friction reduced with the increasing of normal load and product usage. Backward sliding showed higher tactile friction than forward sliding mode. Damaged hair exhibited lower tactile friction than virgin hair under wet situation, while showed higher tactile friction than virgin hair under dry situation. The developed methodology has been used preliminarily to investigate the tactile friction of hair after using several well-designed hair care products.
The mechanism of the capillary oscillation and its application to fabrics' sweat permeability

Abstract:The capillary effect plays an important role in air and moisture permeability, and it can be used for thermal enhancement and energy harvesting. However, the capillary oscillation has not been extremely studied, and its mechanism for fabrics' sweat permeability was rare and preliminary. This paper studies the frequency property of the capillary oscillation in a zig-zag porosity of a fabric with a multiple layer structure. The theoretical analysis reveals that small porosity and low frequency of the zig-zag porosity are beneficial to the high sweat permeability. The proposed capillary oscillation probably paves a new avenue for designing fabrics with high moisture permeability, particularly in sportswear and military apparel in extreme cold environments.

Abstract:Directional liquid transport (DLT) on fibrous systems has been widely used in both natural organisms and practical applications as an important mass transfer strategy. So far, DLTs on fibers are heavily dependent on the conical structure that enables generating the Laplace pressure difference. For the cylindrical fibers, liquid can only transport evenly along both directions of the axis driven by the capillary forces between fibers, which however hardly proceeds directionally in a controllable way. Here, the authors revealed that the dual cylindrical hairs bear the ability of DLT, which is attributable to the wet‐rebuilt open‐wedged scales. Capillary forces along wedge corners facilitate the liquid transport in the against‐scale direction, while the pinning effect at the sharp edges of open‐wedges works cooperatively with the anisotropic retention force imparted by the ratchet structures to inhibit liquid spreading in the with‐scale direction. Consequently, liquid prefers to transport in the against‐scale direction on dual cylindrical hairs. Drawing inspirations, the authors develop the conceptual‐model of dual cylindrical fibers that is capable of DLT, and moreover the DLT with different rectification ratios can be well‐controlled depending on the opening angle of wedges. The result offers new insights for manipulating liquid using cylindrical fibrous systems. Directional liquid transport on dual cylindrical fiber arrays with oriented wedged scales is demonstrated. Water is promoted to spread into long‐distance in the against‐scale direction and inhibited to spread in the with‐scale direction under the effect of the capillary force in wedge corners and pinning effect of sharp edges.

Abstract:Significance Although various creatures possess different structural gradients to gather water from fog, such as spider silk and cactus cluster, their gradient surfaces can only drive the motion of harvested water droplets over only a limited drop-sized distance and afford a slow speed, limiting the practical usage. The peristome of the pitcher plant presented here is a superior fog harvestor that capitalizes on the combined effects of ratchet, concavity, and arch structures to collect water from humid air and transport condensate water directionally along the curved peristome at a recording speed. Biomimetic approaches apply this multiscaled curvatures design to the construction of water fog and organic vapor harvestor, making it a versatile solution for a broad range of applications.

Anisotropic Hemiwicking Behavior on Laser Structured Prismatic Microgrooves

Abstract:The wicking phenomenon, including wicking and hemiwicking, has attracted increasing attention for its critical importance to a wide range of engineering applications, such as thermal management, water harvesting, fuel cells, microfluidics, and biosciences. There exists a more urgent demand for anisotropic wicking behaviors since an increasing number of advanced applications are significantly complex. For example, special-shaped vapor chambers and heating atomizers in some electronic cigarettes need liquid replenishing with various velocities in different wicking behaviors with elliptical shapes on laser structured prismatic microgrooves. The prismatic microgrooves were fabricated via one-step femtosecond laser direct writing, and the anisotropic hemiwicking behaviors were observed when utilizing glycerol, glycol, and water as the test liquid. Specifically, the ratios of horizontal wicking distance in directions along short and long axes were tan 0 degrees, tan 15 degrees, tan 30 degrees, and tan 45 degrees for samples with cross-angles of 0 degrees, 30 degrees, 60 degrees, and 90 degrees, respectively. The vertical water wicking front displayed corresponding angles under the guidance of laser structured prismatic microgrooves. Theoretical analysis shows that the wicking distance is mainly dependent on the cross-angle 0 and surface roughness, in which the wicking distance is proportional to cos(0/2). Driven by the capillary pressure forming in the narrow microgrooves, the liquid initially filled the valleys of microgrooves and then surrounded and covered the prismatic ridges with laser-induced nanoparticles. The abundant nanoparticles increased the surface roughness, leading to the enhancement of wicking performance, which was further evidenced by the larger wicking speed of the sample with more nanoparticles. The mechanism of anisotropic hemiwicking behaviors revealed in this work paves the way for wicking control, and the proposed prismatic microgrooved surfaces with two-dimensional anisotropic hemiwicking performance and superhydrophilicity could serve in a broad range of applications, especially for the advanced thermal management with specific heat load configurations.
Flexible Hemline-Shaped Microfibers for Liquid Transport

Abstract:Directional liquid transport is important in both fundamental studies and industrial applications. Most existing strategies rely on the use of predesigned surfaces with sophisticated microstructures that limit the versatility and universality of the liquid transport. Here we present a platform for liquid transport based on flexible microfluidic-derived fibers with hemline-shaped cross-sections. These microfibers have periodic parallel microcavities along the axial direction, with sharp edges and wedge corners that enable unilateral pinning and capillary rise of liquids. This structure enables directional liquid transport along hydrophilic substrates with the use of a single fiber. Alternatively, a pair of fibers enables directional liquid transport along hydrophobic substrates or even without any additional substrate; the directional transport behavior applies to a wide range of liquids. We demonstrate the use of these fibers in open microfluidics, water extraction and liquid transport along arbitrary three-dimensional paths. Our platform provides a facile and universal solution for directional liquid transport in a range of different scenarios. A flexible hemline-shaped microfiber featuring periodic parallel microcavities with sharp edges and wedges was developed using microfluidics to achieve unidirectional liquid transport along arbitrary pathways.
Microscopic Observation of Preferential Capillary Pumping in Hollow Nanowire Bundles

Abstract:Numerous studies have focused on designing micro/nanostructured surfaces to improve wicking capability for rapid liquid transport in many industrial applications. Although hierarchical surfaces have been demonstrated to enhance wicking capability, the underlying mechanism of liquid transport remains elusive. Here, we report the preferential capillary pumping on hollow hierarchical surfaces with internal nanostructures, which are different from the conventional solid hierarchical surfaces with external nanostructures. Specifically, capillary pumping preferentially occurs in the nanowire bundles instead of the interconnected V-groove on hollow hierarchical surfaces, observed by confocal laser scanning fluorescence microscopy. Theoretical analysis shows that capillary pumping capability is mainly dependent on the nanowire diameter and results in 15.5 times higher capillary climbing velocity in the nanowire bundles than that in the microscale V-groove. Driven by the Laplace pressure difference between nanowire bundles and V-grooves, the preferential capillary pumping is increased with the reduction of the nanowire diameter. Capillary pumping of the nanowire bundles provides a preferential path for rapid liquid flow, leading to 2 times higher wicking capability of the hollow hierarchical surface comparing with the conventional hierarchical surface. The unique mechanism of preferential capillary pumping revealed in this work paves the way for wicking enhancement and provides an insight into the design of wicking surfaces for high-performance capillary evaporation in a broad range of applications.

Abstract:Abstract Liquid transport (wicking) has great effect on the physiological comfort, since it directly determines the moisture management of fibrous assemblies. For elastic fabric structures, the wickability primarily depends on several factors, such as tensile strain and ambient conditions (e.g., temperature, relative humidity). The main purpose of this work was to systematically clarify the effects of water temperature and relative humidity on vertical liquid water transport of as-prepared cotton/lycra elastic woven fabric experimentally and theoretically. On the experimental side, the results indicated that our as-prepared fabric exhibited a water temperature-strengthening effect, while a humidity-weakening effect was produced simultaneously. In other words, a higher water temperature results in a higher equilibrium wicking height, whereas a higher relative humidity results in a decreased wicking height. Furthermore, the underlying wicking mechanism in each case was graphically unraveled. On the analytical side, the proposed Laughlin-Davies model turns out to be appropriate, it can replicate the wicking characteristics of fabric in both of these cases qualitatively and quantitatively. These findings are expected to provide a deep understanding of fabric wicking under a realistic regime.

Abstract:Achieving the directional and long-range droplet transport on solid surfaces is widely preferred for many practical applications but has proven to be challenging. Particularly, directionality and transport distance of droplets on hydrophobic surfaces are mutually exclusive. Here, we report that drain fly, a ubiquitous insect maintaining nonwetting property even in very high humidity, develops a unique ballistic droplet transport mechanism to meet these demanding challenges. The drain fly serves as a flexible rectifier to allow for a directional and long-range propagation as well as self-removal of a droplet, thus suppressing unwanted liquid flooding. Further investigation reveals that this phenomenon is owing to the synergistic conjunction of multiscale roughness, structural periodicity, and flexibility, which rectifies the random and localized droplet nucleation (nanoscale and microscale) into a directed and global migration (millimeter-scale). The mechanism we have identified opens up a new approach toward the design of artificial rectifiers for broad applications.

The challenge derives from the liquid/solid contacts, which incur spontaneous spreading, strong pinning, and substantial retention. The retention-proof interfaces, including superhydrophobic surfaces, lubricant-infused surfaces, and liquid marbles, mitigate these issues by respectively introducing air, lubricant, and particulate layers to isolate liquids from underlying solids. Assisted by these interfaces, contrastive physical/chemical designs and engineering methods are leveraged to unlock unparalleled liquid-control methods that are otherwise inaccessible. In this review, we focus on the application of retention-proof interfaces in three facets of manipulation: the aliquoting, grip, and transport of fluids. We discuss the key features, strategies and implementations, highlighting the fundamental physics and operation principles. For aliquoting, the cooperation between diminutive geometries and interfaces in partition droplets are examined. For the grip, we discuss the impact of micro-/nanotextures on adhesion behavior and highlight the mechanisms of switching the adhesive forces. For the transport, we review various engineering and functionalizing forms through which subtle driving forces are dexterously imposed on mobile droplets. The performance of different techniques is evaluated, and potential directions are proposed.</p>

Abstract:The development of a simple approach for the generation of microstructures could expand opportunities in both fundamental studies and practical applications. Mammalian hair is a filamentous biomaterial which is mechanically strong, flexible, abundant, and easily harvested. Here, we demonstrate for the first time a simple generation of microfluidic channels from mammalian hairs. Our results show that hairs with different widths result in the generation of microfluidic channels with different widths. Furthermore, with different textures of hairs, the shape of microfluidic channels can be varied. Finally, we demonstrate the utility of this microfluidic channel for bioassays and microwire synthesis. We anticipate that these results could open exciting opportunities for investigating a variety of biological materials to fabricate micro/nano-structures and devices for fundamental studies, as well as applications ranging from biological analysis to materials synthesis.
