Abstract:High-pressure and high-temperature experiments were conducted on the system Mg2SiO4-MgAl2O4 over a temperature range from 1550 to 1750℃ at 22 GPa with a multi-anvil apparatus. Analyses of quenched run products revealed that in the present system, with the MgAl2O4 component increasing, the phase assemblages change from y phase to 7 phase + majorite + MgO, and to majorite + MgO, and to majorite + MgO + corundum solid solution, and finally to MgO + Al2O3 oxide mixture in the MgAl2O4 end-member. The majorite solid solution has the garnet structure and its composition varies, depending on the coexisting phases. The Al2O3 content of the γ phase is very low (-0.8wt%), so the Al2O3 content of the Mg2SiO4-MgAl2O4 system may not significantly affect the phase boundary of the post-spinel transformation because of very limited Al2O3 solubility in Mg2SiO4-spinel.
Single-Crystal Elasticity of the a and J 3 of Mg 2 Si 04 Polymorphs at High Pressure

Abstract:The full set of single-crystal elastic moduli of forsterite (a.-MgZSi04) andwadsleyite (f3-MgZSi04) were measured at pressures of 3-16 GPa and 0-14 GPa, respectively. For forsterite, the pressure derivatives of the bulk (Ko's) and shear (Go') modulus are 4.2 ::I:: 0.2 and 1.4 ::I:: 0.1, respectively. For wadsleyite, the corresponding pressure derivatives are 4.3 ::I::0.2 and 1.4 ::I::0.2. These values are much lower than those reported in earlier, low-pressure studies for both materials. At the pressure of the 410-km seismic discontinuity, the roomtemperature velocity increase across the a.-J3 transition is 9.8% for compressional waves and 12.4% for shear waves. The results are consistent with an olivine fraction in the upper mantle of30-50%.

Abstract:The complete set of elastic stiffness coefficients of a single crystal of Mg2SiO4 in the modified spinel (wadsleyite) structure are reported at eight pressures fr om ambient to 14 Gigapascals (GPa). All moduli vary linearly with pressure within the resolution of the data. Third-order Birch-Murnaghan equation fits to aggregate elastic moduli yield values of 170 (+/-2) GPa and 4.3 (+/-0.2) for the adiabatic bulk modulus and its first pressure derivative, and 115 (+/-2) GPa and 1.4 (+/-0.2) for the shear modulus and its first pressure derivative. These data, together with previous results for alpha-Mg2SiO4, enable us to make the first in situ determination of the velocity increase due to the alpha-beta transition at the pressure (similar to 13.8 GPa) of the 410 km discontinuity. The room-temperature velocity increase at the transition pressure is 9.8% for compressional waves and 12.4% for shear waves.

Abstract:Unit cell volumes of the beta (β) and spinel (γ) phases (Mg 2 SiO 4 ) have been measured under simultaneous high pressure and high temperature using synchrotron X ray radiation, in a cubic anvil apparatus. With volume‐temperature data at constant pressure, we determine the average volume thermal expansion coefficients of the β phase from 724 to 872 K at 7.6 GPa to be 2.28(±0.45)×10 −5 /K and of the γ phase from 759 to 962 K at 9.8 GPa to be 1.71(±0.14)×10 −5 /K. Thermodynamic relations are used to constrain the temperature derivative of the isothermal bulk modulus ( K T ) from the high‐pressure thermal expansion data: (∂ K T /∂ T ) P is found to be −2.7(±0.5)×10 −2 GPa/K for the β phase and −2.8(±0.3)×10 −2 GPs/K for the γ phase. Unit cell volumes of the olivine (α) phase, back‐transformed from the β and γ phases at high temperatures, have been measured under pressure at temperatures above the Debye temperature; using thermal pressure equations, we find (∂ K T /∂ T ) P for the α phase to be −2.1(±0.2)×10 −2 GPa/K. These new data on the temperature derivatives of the bulk modulus for the three phases are consistent with an upper mantle containing 60 to 65% olivine and the absence of a velocity signature for the β to γ phase transition near 520 km depth.

Abstract:High-pressure Raman scattering and angle dispersive synchrotron x-ray diffraction studies have been carried out on magnesium tantalate (MgTa2O6) up to 41 GPa at room temperature. A pressure-induced phase transition at pressures above 10 GPa accompanied by softening of the internal ν11 (Eg) modes has been observed. Another phase transition took place at 20.2 GPa, which indicates that the edge shared TaO6 octahedra are distorted. The equation of state for MgTa2O6 in low pressure phase I was obtained by the second-order Birch–Murnaghan method, yielding a zero-pressure bulk modulus B0 of 205.8 ± 8.4 GPa. The pressure dependencies of the lattice vibration mode were extracted, and it is suggested that the instability of the trirutile structure at high pressure is related to the strong deformation of the TaO6 octahedra. Decompression measurements suggest that the pressure-induced transformation is irreversible.

Abstract:We have performed high pressure-temperature Brillouin scattering measurements on single crystal hydrogen sulfide using externally heated diamond anvil cell techniques. The pressure dependences of the acoustic velocities, isothermal elastic constants, and moduli of single crystal hydrogen sulfide have been determined along four isotherms. Both elastic constants and moduli increase monotonously with pressure along each isotherm, while they show a decreased tendency with temperature elevated under the same pressure points. The experimental equation of state of single crystal hydrogen sulfide is obtained by fitting with a third-order Birch-Murnaghan and Tait equation. It is proposed that the effect of hydrogen bonds contributes to the unique tendency of elastic anisotropy in single crystal hydrogen sulfide. Through our work, we have extended the melting curve and phase diagram of hydrogen sulfide up to 12 GPa and 580 K. Published by AIP Publishing.
Elasticity of MgO and a Primary Pressure Scale to 55 GPa.

Abstract:We have studied the elasticity and pressure-density equation of state of MgO in diamond cells to 55 GPa and have doubled the previous pressure limit of accurate elasticity determinations for crystals. Integrating single-crystal velocity data from Brillouin scattering measurements and density data from polycrystalline x-ray diffraction, we obtained the three principal elastic tensor elements (C(11), C(12), and C(44)) and various secondary elasticity parameters, including single-crystal elastic anisotropy, Cauchy relation, aggregate sound velocities, and Poisson's ratio, as functions of pressure. The present study also provides a direct determination of pressure without recourse to any prior pressure standard, thus creating a primary pressure scale. The commonly used ruby fluorescence pressure scale has thus been improved to 1% accuracy by the new MgO scale.
Anomalous Thermal Transport in MgSe with Diamond Phase under Pressure

Abstract:Most materials exhibit a monotonically increasing lattice thermal conductivity with pressure. However, in this work, we report anomalous thermal transport properties of MgSe with a diamond phase under high pressure by first-principles calculations. Unlike other selenides, the lattice thermal conductivity of MgSe decreases with increasing pressure. We attribute this anomalous thermal transport to both harmonic and anharmonic effects. The harmonic effect is related to the anomalous downward shift of the transverse acoustic modes, which leads to decreasing phonon group velocities. This anomalous harmonic effect can also be confirmed by anomalous soft elastic properties. The anharmonic effect, on the other hand, is related to the stronger anharmonic scattering strength under pressure. Through bonding analysis, we found that the alternating bonding and antibonding states, combined with the unique lattice structure, are the main reason behind this anomaly. Our results reveal that the abnormal soft elastic properties under pressure can be a new way to judge whether lattice thermal conductivity decreases with pressure.

Abstract:The high-pressure phase transition of Mg2Si was investigated using angel dispersive synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction with diamond anvil cell. A phase transition of Mg2Si occurs from the anti-fluorite structure to a monoclinic structure instead of the anti-cotunnite structure at about 11.1GPa, which is reversible. Isothermal pressure-volume relationship of anti-fluorite Mg2Si is well described by the third-order Birch–Murnaghan equation of state with V0=64.0(2)Å3 and B0=58(2)GPa.

Abstract:The structural behavior of Mg3N2 has been investigated up to 40.7 GPa at room temperature by means of angle-dispersive X-ray diffraction. A reversible, first-order structural phase transition from the ambient cubic phase (la (3) over bar) to a high-pressure monoclinic phase (C2/m) is found to start at similar to 20.6 GPa and complete at similar to 32.5 GPa for the first time. The equation of state determined from our experiments yields bulk moduli of 110.7(2) and 171.5(1) GPa for the cubic and monoclinic phases, respectively, indicating higher incompressibility of the high-pressure phase Of Mg3N2. First-principles calculations reproduced the phase stability and transition pressure determined in our experiment, In addition, a second phase transition from the monoclinic phase to a hexagonal phase (P (3) over barm(1)) was predicted around 67 GPa for Mg3N2. The electronic band structures of three phases of Mg3N2 are also calculated and discussed.
Deformation of Polycrystalline MgO at Pressures of the Lower Mantle

Abstract:[1] Room temperature investigations on the shear strength, elastic moduli, elastic anisotropy, and deformation mechanisms of MgO (periclase) are performed in situ up to pressures of 47 GPa using radial X-ray diffraction and the diamond anvil cell. The calculated elastic moduli are in agreement with previous Brillouin spectroscopy studies. The uniaxial stress component in the polycrystalline MgO sample is found to increase rapidly to 8.5(+/-1) GPa at a pressure of 10(+/-1) GPa in all experiments. Under axial compression, a strong cube texture develops which was recorded in situ. It is probable that the preferred orientation of MgO is due to deformation by slip. A comparison between the experimental textures and results from polycrystal plasticity suggest that the {110} [1 (1) over bar0] is the only significantly active slip system under very high confining pressure at room temperature. These data demonstrate the feasibility of analyzing elastic moduli, shear strength, and deformation mechanisms under pressures relevant for the Earth's lower mantle. Implications for the anisotropy and rheology of the lower mantle are discussed.

Abstract:The anisotropic elasticity and physical properties of Ti2B with I4/m symmetry are predicted by the first-principle method combined with the quasi-harmonic Debye model. The effects of pressure on elastic constants, polycrystalline elastic moduli, Poisson’s ratio, Vickers hardness, and fracture toughness are calculated. The high pressure limit of mechanical stability of Ti2B is ∼70 GPa. The calculated polycrystalline elastic moduli B, G, E, and fracture toughness increase with pressure. The Vickers hardness decreases with pressure, but it is still relatively hard. The values of G/B and Poisson’s ratio indicate the ductility of Ti2B enhanced with the increase of pressure. The elastic anisotropy is investigated via the various anisotropic indexes (AU, AB, AG, A1, A2 and A3), 3D surface constructions and projections of bulk and Young’s moduli. The opposite effects of pressure and temperature on the isothermal bulk modulus, thermal expansion coefficient, heat capacity, Debye temperature, and Grüneisen parameter of Ti2B have been found.
New Pressure-Induced Polymorphic Transitions of Anhydrous Magnesium Sulfate

Abstract:The effects of pressure on the crystal structure of the three known polymorphs of magnesium sulfate have been theoretically study by means of DFT calculations up to 45 GPa. We determined that at ambient conditions gamma MgSO4 is an unstable polymorph, which decompose into MgO and SO3, and that the response of the other two polymorphs to hydrostatic pressure is non isotropic. Additionally we found that at all pressures beta MgSO4 has a largest enthalpy than alpha MgSO4. This indicates that beta MgSO4 is thermodynamically unstable versus alpha MgSO4 and predicts the occurrence of a beta alpha phase transition under moderate compression. Our calculations also predict the existence under pressure of additional phase transitions to two new polymorphs of MgSO4, which we named as delta MgSO4 and epsilon MgSO4. The alpha delta transition is predicted to occur at 17.5 GPa, and the delta epsilon transition at 35 GPa, pressures that nowadays can be experimentally easily achieved. All the predicted structural transforma ions are characterized as first order transitions. This suggests that they can be non reversible, and therefore the new polymorphs could be recovered as metastable polymorphs at ambient conditions. The crystal structure of the two new polymorphs is reported. In them, the coordination number of sulfur is four as in the previously known polymorphs, but the coordination number of magnesium is eight instead of six. In the article we will report the axial and bond compressibility for the four polymorphs of MgSO4. The pressure volume equation of state of each phase is also given. The values obtained for the bulk modulus are 62 GPa, 57 GPa, 102 GPa, and 119 GPa for alpha MgSO4, beta MgSO4, delta MgSO4, and epsilon MgSO4, respectively. Finally, the electronic band structure of these four polymorphs of MgSO4 has been calculated by the first time.

Polymorph selection of magnesium under different pressures: A simulation study

Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulations were used to investigate the influence of pressure on the structural properties and dynamics of magnesium (Mg) during rapid solidification. The dynamics analysis revealed that, with an increase in pressure, the dynamics of Mg melt slowed down sharply and the dynamical heterogeneities increased, leading to a denser structure. Atom-level structural analysis using the cluster-type index method suggested that the predominant structure transformed from hexagonal closed-packed to face-centered cubic with increasing pressure from 0 GPa to 5 GPa, and then transformed to the A15 complex crystal structure as the pressure increased above 10 GPa. In addition, the nature of polymorph selection was investigated by analyzing the phonon dispersion of Mg under different pressures. These findings provide a novel insight into polymorphic transitions of Mg under pressure and guide the selection of Mg polymorphs for practical applications.
Ab Initio Study of MgSiO3 Low-Clinoenstatite at High Pressure

Abstract:We investigated the athermal high-pressure behavior of the structural properties of MgSiO3 low clinoenstatite using the plane wave pseudopotential method within the local density approximation. The experimental zero pressure structure and pressure variations of the lattice parameters were reasonably well reproduced. The calculated atomic positions vary slightly and monotonically with pressure. Our results showed that MgO6 octahedra are three times more compressible than SiO4 tetrahedra, consistent with the general observation that the SiO4 tetrahedra are nearly incompressible in silicates. Mg2O6 octahedra (the larger of two Mg sites) remain most distorted over the pressure regime studied while MglO(6) octahedra and both types of SiO4 tetrahedra show similar level of distortions. The tetrahedral chain angles were shown to slightly vary with pressure indicating that the structure under compression always remains highly distorted away from the ideal close-packing of O atoms.
Single-crystal Elasticity of Zn2TiO4-spinel Up to 18 GPa

Abstract:The single-crystal elastic constants of the spinel phase of Zn2TiO4 have been studied for the first-time using Brillouin scattering up to 18 GPa at room temperature in a diamond anvil cell. The three independent elastic constants of Zn2TiO4 spinel at ambient conditions were calculated: C 11 = 226(3), C 12 = 137(4) and C 44 = 88(2). The bulk modulus (K S0) is 167(3) GPa, with pressure derivative K ′s=5.3(2) , and the shear modulus (G 0) is 67(1) GPa, with pressure derivative G ′=0.06(5) . On basis of previous studies, our results suggest a possibility of the general law of elastic constants with pressure derivative ( C ′ijs ) for spinel structure minerals: C′11 ≈ C′12 and C′44<<C′11C′12 . In addition, Zn2TiO4 have the lowest velocities and V S gradient compared with the spinel type minerals in Earth’s mantle. Our results indicate the incorporation of Zn and Ti in the structure of ringwoodite may have a negative effect on the sound velocities and V S gradient of Earth’s mantle transition zone.

Abstract:P-V-T data of MgSiO3 orthoenstatite have been measured by single-crystal X-ray diffraction at simultaneous high pressures (in excess of 4.5 GPa) and temperatures (up to 1000 K). The new P-V-T data of the orthoenstatite, together with previous compression data and thermal expansion data, are described by a modified Birch-Murnaghan equation of state for diverse temperatures. The fitted thermoelastic parameters for MgSiO3 orthoenstatite are: thermal expansion ∂α/∂P with values of a=2.86(29)×10-5 K-1 and b=0.72(16)×10-8 K-2; isothermal bulk modulus K T o =102.8(2) GPa; pressure derivative of bulk modulus K′=∂K/∂P=10.2(1.2); and temperature derivative of bulk modulus K=∂K/∂T=-0.037(5) GPa/K. The derived thermal Grüneisen parameter is γth=1.05 for ambient conditions; Anderson-Grüneisen parameter is δ T o =11.6, and the pressure derivative of thermal expansion is ∂α/∂P=-3.5×10-6K-1 GPa-1. From the P-V-T data and the thermoelastic equation of state, thermal expansions at two constant pressures of 1.5 GPa and 4.0 GPa are calculated. The resulting pressure dependence of thermal expansion is Δα/ΔP=-3.2(1)× 10-6 K-1 GPa-1.
