“Visibility”：Social Media and Public Sphere---A Case of Zhan Haite

Abstract:This paper aims to discuss how social media expands the meaning and significance of public sphere through the concept of “visibility” . By exploring the Weibo posters against the education and household registration system launched by a teen girl Zhan Haite , this paper argues that the spread of new media has already broken the usual understanding of social media as functional agencies that provide information , produce reality and make consensus . Instead , by showing visibility , social media expands the connotation of public sphere , and also somehow subverts the relations among communication , media and society as communication changes from a functional element of the social structure to a fundamental element that constitute the society .
