Abstract:Temperature has a significant impact on the growth and utilization efficiency of the organic matter (glucose) of algae. In this study, Chlorella pyrenoidosa (C. pyrenoidosa) were heterotrophically cultivated at different temperatures (15, 20, 25, 30 and 35°C) to study the effects of temperature on algae productivity, consumption rate of glucose and conversion ratio of glucose to algae cells. The heterotrophic productivity and consumption rate of glucose increased with the increase of temperature. When the temperature was increased from 15 to 30°C, the conversion ratio of glucose to algae cells improved, but with the further increase of temperature from 30 to 35°C, the conversion ratio sharply dropped. The highest heterotrophic productivity (0.161g/L.d) was found at 35°C; however, there was still some productivity at the lowest conversion ratio (0.217g/g), which would raise costs because more glucose would be needed to maintain the fast growth of algae. At 30°C, there was relatively high heterotrophic productivity and the highest conversion ratio, 0.155g/L.d and 0.341g/g, respectively. Therefore, at 30°C, C. pyrenoidosa will achieve a high growth rate with a low cost of cultivation. The obtained results may contribute to the commercial cultivation of C. pyrenoidosa.
