Abstract:Abstract The nonbiting midges are tiny insects with a wide distribution around West Lake, China. In this study, the seasonal dynamics of the local dominant midge species was investigated. Phylogenetic trees of this species also were analyzed to discover its evolutionary history. Ultraviolet (UV) light traps were used for surveillance around West Lake in the period from April 2017 to November 2018. External morphological identification was performed using a stereomicroscope. Two genes of adult female midges that encoded the cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) and internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS-1) were sequenced and aligned online using GenBank nucleotide database and the Molecular Evolutionary Genetics Analysis (MEGA) software 10.1.7. According to the field surveillance in 2017–2018, Forcipomyia bikanni Chan and LeRoux (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) is the representative dominant species of West Lake, with its activity peaking in August and October. The COI and ITS-1 gene sequences of F. bikanni (XH01-5) were 523 bp and 315 bp, respectively. The final phylogenetic tree of the COI implied that F. bikanni (XH01-5) has 97.9% significant similarity with conspecific F. bikanni (LC015045) from the adjacent Fujian Province, China (E-value ≤ 0.1%). Furthermore, the ITS-1 sequences with 98% likelihood showed the highest linkage between F. bikanni (XH01-5) and F. townsvillensis (Taylor) (HM775502-HM775504) with different branches. Thus, the final unrooted phylogenetic trees of COI and ITS-1 are essential tools for reconstructing the evolutionary histories of nonbiting midges.

Abstract:A new species of the genus Nilothauma Kieffer, N. pandum sp. n., is described, and its morphological descriptions and illustrations are also given. A key to the males of Nilothauma is given. The adult male of N. pandum sp. n. can be distinguished from known species of the genus by the following combination of characters: anal point very broadly lanceolate with microtrichia in median ridge and apical margin, rounded at apex; superior volsella pad-like, expanded distally; median volsella curved, rounded at apex, with 2 long basal setae and 1 long median seta.

Abstract:During a recent inventory survey of the nematofauna of tea plantation at Zhejiang Province, China, Discocriconemella parasinensis n. sp. was detected in the rhizosphere of Camellia sinensis. The new species can be characterized by having the uninterrupted rounded labial disc, en face view showing rectangular-rounded labial plate without submedian lobes, R = 82.6 (80-86), Rex = 22 (21-23), stylet length of 68.3 (59-76) mu m, excretory pore located 1-2 annuli posterior to the esophageal bulb, vulva open, postvulval body elongated conoid, and tail conoid with bilobed terminus. Morphologically, the species shares the same lip-type with D. discolabia, D. mauritiensis, D. mineira, D. perseae, and D. sinensis. Phylogenetic relationships of the new species based on D2-D3 expansion segments of 28S, ITS, and 18S rRNA genes revealed that D. parasinensis n. sp. formed a separated Glade from other criconematid species, thereby supporting its status as a new species of the genus. The new species showed close phylogenetic relationships with Criconemoides geraerti.

Abstract:Microtendipes globosus sp. nov. (Diptera: Chironomidae) from Xishan Island, China is described and illustrated from a male imago. The new species is characterized by a spherical median volsella with 9-10 long setae, the basal lobe of the superior volsella with 10-12 setae, tergite IX without median seta, and the absence of pigment marks on the wings. An identification key to the males belonging to the genus Microtendipes in China is provided.

Abstract:A new species of the genus Morellia Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830, Morellia (Morellia) trifurcata sp. n., collected from Yunnan, China is described. Four DNA sequences of the partial mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (mtCOI) gene of this new species are provided. In order to evaluate the availability of DNA barcoding for identifying Morellia species, 38 currently available, non-identical COI sequences of 16 Morellia species are involved in a molecular analysis using the neighbor-joining (NJ) method. The intra- and interspecific p-distances are summarized.

Abstract:A new species group, the interrupta group, is established within the genus Leucophenga based on two known and three new species, all of which are endemic to the Oriental region: L. interrupta Duda, 1924, L. neointerrupta Fartyal & Toda, 2005, L. bifurcata sp. nov., L. quadrifurcata sp. nov. and L. retifoliacea sp. nov. A key to the five species of the interrupta group is provided. Sixteen mtDNA COI sequences of the five species are analyzed; the molecular data are used as complementary evidence for the species boundaries defined by the morphological data.

A key and a morphological summary table to all these Leucophenga species are provided. Phylogenetic relationships among these 21 Leucophenga species, another 14 congeneric, known species from seven groups, and two representative outgroup taxa are reconstructed using 169 DNA sequences of the partial mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (mtCOI) gene. In sum, 13 of the 21 Leucophenga species, which possess the only diagnostic character of the proxima species group (abdominal third tergite shortened, anteriorly discolored in males), are not monophyletic. Therefore, all the Leucophenga species described or redescribed in this study are temporarily classified as unplaced species (except for L. sorii, which has been assigned to the sorii species group) to avoid further confusion.

Abstract:Two new species, Macropelopia ( Macropelopia ) excavata Xu & Fu, sp. nov. and Macropelopia ( Macropelopia ) quadrimacula Xu & Fu, sp. nov. , are described as male adults. A key to identify the males of Macropelopia from China is provided. Furthermore, in order to ascertain the genetic distance between these species and their morphological characteristics, mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene sequences were uploaded to the National Center for Biotechnology Information. These COI sequences were then utilized to infer the relationships between the species, employing the neighbor-joining method.

Abstract:A new species of soft scale insect (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha: Coccidae) belonging to the genus Paralecanium Cockerell & Bueker, P. sabia Tan, Meng & Xing sp. n., is described and illustrated. It was found on the leaves of Sabia swinhoei Hemsl (Sabiaceae) in Guizhou Maolan National Nature Reserve, Guizhou Province, China. Habitat photographs and illustrations are provided. The type material of P. sabia sp. n. is deposited at the Institute of Entomology, Guizhou University, Guiyang, China (GUGC) and in the insect collection at the Department of Forestry Protection, Beijing Forestry University, Beijing, China (NFUC). An identification key to separate the 28 species in Paralecanium, based on the morphology of adult females, is provided.

Abstract:A new genus Maculaprosbole of Tettigarctidae with a new species M. zhengi is described based on a complete fossil forewing from the Mesozoic of northeastern China. Due to its broad costal area and clavus, Maculaprosbole zhengi gen. et sp. n. can be attributed to the subfamily Cicadoprosbolinae. This genus is similar to the genera Sanmai and Hirtaprosbole in coloration pattern and forewing venation, respectively. However, it differs from Hirtaprosbole in crossvein r-m absent and apical CuA section strongly curved, running along the nodal line for a distance, and Sanmai in transverse coloration mainly focusing on the postnodal area. Herein, the prominent coloration pattern of this new taxon is discussed.

Abstract:The genus Macrosemia Kato, 1925 (Hemiptera, Cicadidae, Cicadinae, Dundubiini, Dundubiina) currently includes 16 species (excluding subspecies and varieties), mainly occurring in the Oriental Region. More than half of them, 10 species, are known from China, including one new species, described in the present study. A new species of cicada, Macrosemia fengi Wang sp. nov. , is described from Yunnan and Guizhou, southwest China. Colour plates are presented to illustrate its diagnostic characters. The distribution map of the new species is also given.

Abstract:The tribe Xylenini is one of the main large taxonomic groups known as Winter Noctuidae.A new species of the genus Antivaleria Sugi, 1980, Antivaleria ronkayorum Zhang & Wang, sp. nov. is described and illustrated from Zhejiang Prov., China. The species resembles Antivaleria peregovitsi Ronkay et al., 2010, but differs in wing pattern, foot-like cucullus and special shape of harpe. A key to the Antivaleria species is presented. The holotype is deposited in the Department of Entomology, College of Plant Protection, South China Agricultural University, Guangzhou.
