Abstract:As an emerging three-dimensional chiral metamaterial, plasmonic nanospirals (NSs) possess inherent chiroptical activity that has attracted increasing attention for developing potential photonic applications. However, the study of chiroptical activity of plasmonic NSs is still in its infancy, especially for NSs made of silver, which is a typical plasmonic material with high plasmonic quality. Herein, we present a systematic study of circular dichroism (CD) of silver NSs (AgNSs) that are fabricated and engineered in helical lengths by glancing-angle deposition (GLAD) and dispersed in ethanol. The CD spectrum is composed of a bisignated mode of two peaks, one in the UV regime and the other in the visible. The UV mode has a resonance wavelength saturating at ∼375 nm and a linewidth decoupled from the helical elongation, while the visible mode tends to have a redshift and its linewidth broadens linearly with the elongation of AgNS. Helical elongation generally amplifies the chiroptical activity of both modes. Finite-element simulation shows good agreement with the experimental CD results, and accounts for the wavelength-related chiroptical distinction in terms of the resonance wavelength. This work contributes to understanding the bisignated chiroptical responses of plasmonic nanospirals, and introduces a simple method to tailor the visible chiroptical activity that is strongly desired to explore a wide range of chirality-related bio-applications.
Modeling and Engineering of Three-Dimensional Chiroplasmonic Silver Nano Structures (presentation Recording)

Abstract:Fabrication of 3D chiral nanoplasmonic structures is always challenging, while the principles for their chiroptical properties are still ambiguous.We will present a combined experimental and theoretical study on 3D chiroplasmonic activity of silver nanospirals (AgNSs), fabricated on sapphire by low temperature glancing angle deposition. AgNSs exhibit bisignated CD spectra in the UV-visible range, in the form of not only individual AgNSs or an array. Compared to individual AgNSs, the array of AgNSs show CD with an intensity 3 order of magnitude higher. It is demonstrated the engineering of chiroplasmonic CD via adjusting spiral parameters, including spiral pitches, number of turns and handedness.Finite element simulations were performed and are in good agreement with the experiments. A LC theory is also employed to explain the difference of chiroplasmonic CD in the UV and visible region.
Origami-Inspired Chiral Metamaterials with Tunable Circular Dichroism Through Mechanically Guided Three-Dimensional Assembly

Abstract:Chiral metamaterials with artificially engineered subwavelength structures can effectively couple incident waves and lead diverse electromagnetic responses to various circular polarizations. Here, we designed and fabricated an origami-inspired reconfigurable three-dimensional (3D) chiral metamaterial, whose circular dichroism can be dynamically controlled by simple mechanical stretch of its bonded elastomer substrate. The chiral metamaterial was obtained from a patterned planar achiral metasurface through mechanically guided 3D assembly based on the prestrain approach, which ensures deterministic and uniform deformations for each building block during stretching. Numerical simulations and experimental observations were carried out to illustrate the deformation mechanism and the electromagnetic response of the metamaterials under the applied strain. It is shown that the transmissions and chiroptical activities can be continuously tuned from complete spin selectivity to partial spin selectivity when the applied strain increases. The maximum circular dichroism was experimentally measured as high as 0.98, which can be even adjusted to near zero by mechanical stretching. Our work demonstrated an easily operated and promising way to control the chirality of origami-inspired metamaterial in the microwave region, which can be further extended to the terahertz frequency biosensing, imaging, and spectroscope.
Ordering Silver Nanowires for Chiroptical Activity

Abstract:With the development of chiral materials, remarkable progress has been made in the application fields of biology, chemistry, and physics in the past decades. Here we develop a solo-Ag-nanowire (NW)-based, bottom-up chiral construction strategy to fabricate a chiral plasmonic film with strong chiroptical activity in the purple-blue band. Finite-difference time-domain simulations predict that helical structures made by Ag NWs with certain interlayer angles possess strong chiroptical intensity. We then apply a Langmuir-Blodgett technique to construct the layered NW assemblies with both handedness via regulating interlayer angle direction. The Ag NW assemblies show the interlayer-angle-and film-thickness-dependent circular dichroism, reaching the highest anisotropic factor of 0.03. These new chiral structures will serve as ideal candidates for chiral sensors thanks to their specific plasmonic properties.

Abstract:Featured by prominent flexibility and fidelity in producing sophisticated stereoscopic structures transdimensionally, three-dimensional (3D) laser printing technique has vastly extended the toolkit for delivering diverse functional devices. Yet chiral nanoemitters heavily resorting to artificial structures that manifest efficient emission and tightly confined light-mater interactions simultaneously remains alluring but dauntingly challenging for this technique at this moment. In this work, we assert the chiral photoluminescence is implemented from silver nanostructures of optical duality in one go via a twofold three-dimensional laser printing scheme. Such laser printing protocol allows the highly desired duality by simultaneously producing uniformly distributed fluorescent silver nanoclusters and aggregated plasmonic silver nanoparticles to tightly confine chiral interactions at the nanoscale. A helical emitter of 550 nm-helix-diameter as fabricated has seen a record-high luminescence anisotropic factor with the absolute value up to 0.58, which is two orders of magnitude greater than fluorescent chiral silver clusters. This method holds great promise for future versatile applications in chiroptical nanodevices.

Abstract:Here we report the designing of chiral metamaterial with metallic helix array. The effective electric and magnetic dipoles, which originate from the induced surface electric current upon illumination of incident light, are collinear at the resonant frequency. Consequently, for the circularly polarized incident light, negative refractive index is realized. Our design provides a unique approach to tune the optical properties by assembling helices, and demonstrates a different approach in exploring three- dimensional chiral metamaterial.

Abstract:Nanogap plasmonic structures with strong coupling between separated components have different responses to orthogonal-polarized light, giving rise to giant optical chirality. Here, we proposed a three-dimensional(3D) nanostructure that consists of two vertically and twistedly aligned nanogaps, showing the hybridized charge distribution within 3D structures.It is discovered that the structure twisted by 60° exhibits plasmonic coupling behavior with/without gap modes for different circular-polarized plane waves, showing giant chiral response of 60% at the wavelength of 1550 nm. By controlling the disk radius and the insulator layer, the circular dichroism signal can be further tuned between 1538 and 1626 nm.

Abstract:Circular dichroism (CD) is widely used in biology, medicine, and physics. Three-dimensional (3D) chiral structures have been extensively studied because of their ability to produce significant CD effects. Previously reported 3D chiral structures are limited due to the complexity of fabrication processes and CD mechanisms. Here, spatially complementary chiral nanostructure (SCCN) arrays, which comprise bottom silver films with zigzag-shaped nanoslit and top complementary silver zigzag-shaped nanowires, are theoretically and experimentally shown to provide the CD effect. SCCN arrays are prepared experimentally by combining electron beam lithography (EBL) with normal electron beam deposition (NEBD) method and by utilizing EBL and NEBD only once. Numerical results demonstrate that localized surface plasmon excited on top complementary silver zigzag-shaped nanowires and surface plasmon polariton excited on bottom silver films with zigzag-shaped nanoslit result in the CD effect of SCCN arrays. In addition, the CD effect can be tuned by changing the width of the top complementary silver zigzag-shaped nanowires. Such type of chiral nanostructures has easy tunability, simple fabrication, and a better understanding of chiral optical response, which provides a new design for spatially chiral optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:One of the most intriguing structural properties, chirality, is often exhibited by organic and bio-organic molecular constructs. Chiral spectral signatures, typically appearing in the UV range for organic materials and known as circular dichroism (CD), are widely used to probe a molecular stereometry. Such probing has an increasingly broad importance for biomedical and pharmacological fields due to synthesis/separation/detection of homochiral species, biological role of chiral organization, and structural response to environmental conditions and enantiomeric drugs. Recent theoretical and experimental works demonstrated that the CD signal from chiral organic molecules could appear in the plasmonic (typically, visible) band when they coupled with plasmonic particles. However, the magnitude of this CD signal, induced by discrete nonchiral plasmonic particles, and its native molecular analog were found to be comparable. Here we show that shaped nonchiral nanoparticles, namely, gold/silver core/shell nanocubes, can act as plasmonic reporters of chirality for attached molecules by providing a giant, 2 orders of magnitude CD enhancement in a near-visible region. Through the experimental and theoretical comparison with nanoparticles of other shapes and materials, we demonstrate a uniqueness of silver nanocube geometry for the CD enhancement. The discovered phenomenon opens novel opportunities in ultrasensitive probing of chiral molecules and for novel optical nanomaterials based on the chiral elements.

Abstract:In article number 1606482, Wengang Wu, Weihua Zhang and co-workers demonstrate the strong optical rotation effect of a single nanohelix, fabricated by a focused-ion-beam-induced nano-deformation technique. The fabrication method allows the nanometer-thin metallic films to be folded in both directions at the nanoscale with minimum material damages. Using this technique, 3D nanohelixes with various parameters are designed and fabricated, and it is experimentally demonstrated that the polarization axis of light could be rotated by ±8 degrees by individual nanohelices with different curling directions.
Disentangling optical effects in 3D spiral-like, chiral plasmonic assemblies templated by a dark conglomerate liquid crystal

Abstract:Chiral thin films showing electronic and plasmonic circular dichroism (CD) are intensively explored for optoelectronic applications. The most studied chiral organic films are the composites exhibiting a helical geometry, which often causes entanglement of circular optical properties with unwanted linear optical effects (linearly polarized absorption or refraction). This entanglement limits tunability and often translates to a complex optical response. This paper describes chiral films based on dark conglomerate, sponge-like, liquid crystal films, which go beyond the usual helical type geometry, waiving the problem of linear contributions to chiroptical electronic and plasmonic properties. First, we show that purely organic films exhibit high electronic CD and circular birefringence, as studied in detail using Mueller matrix polarimetry. Analogous linear properties are two orders of magnitude lower, highlighting the benefits of using the bi-isotropic dark conglomerate liquid crystal for chiroptical purposes. Next, we show that the liquid crystal can act as a template to guide the assembly of chemically compatible gold nanoparticles into 3D spiral-like assemblies. The Mueller matrix polarimetry measurements confirm that these composites exhibit both electronic and plasmonic circular dichroisms, while nanoparticle presence is not compromising the beneficial optical properties of the matrix.

Abstract:Chiral structures have a wide range of applications, such as biometric identification, chemical analysis, and chiral sensing. The simple fabrication process of chiral nanostructures that can produce a significant circular dichroism (CD) effect remains a challenge. Here, a three-dimensional (3D) cantilever-shaped nanostructure, which inherits the chiral advantages of 3D nanostructures and simplicity of 2D nanostructures, is proposed. The nanostructure can be prepared by the combination of one-time electron beam lithography and oblique-angle deposition and consists of a thin metal film with periodic holes such that two hanging arms were attached to the edges of holes. The length of the cantilever and the height difference between the two arms can be adjusted by controlling the tilt angle of beam current during the deposition processes. Numerical calculations showed that the enhancement of CD signal was achieved by plasmon distortion on the metal film by the lower hanging part of the cantilever structure. Furthermore, signals can be actively adjusted using a temperature-sensitive polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) material. The angle between the lower cantilever and the top metal film was regulated by the change in PDMS volume with temperature. The results provide a new way to fabricating 3D nanostructures and a new mechanism to enhance the CD signal. The proposed nanostructure may have potential applications, such as in ultra-sensitive detection and remote temperature readout, and is expected to be an ultra-compact detection tool for nanoscale structural and functional information.

Abstract:This work presents a technique for fabricating robust 3D chiral metamaterials by projecting arbitrary planar chiral metasurfaces onto customizable and height‐adjustable 3D silicon structures. By altering the height of the spherical crown silicon substrate, the degree of cross‐coupling between the electric and magnetic dipoles can be regulated, thus allowing the CD response of the structure to be effectively controlled. Chiral metamaterials possess unique optical chiral responses, and the attainment of remarkable intrinsic chirality typically necessitates the disruption of their mirror symmetry to facilitate cross‐coupling between electric and magnetic dipoles. However, achieving such symmetry breaking in a flexible and controllable manner remains challenging due to the limited range of applications afforded by available methodologies. Here, a method is proposed for fabricating robust three‐dimensional (3D) chiral metamaterials by projecting arbitrary planar chiral metasurfaces onto on‐demand height‐tunable 3D silicon structures, thereby effectively modulating their optical chiral responses through continuously tuning the degree of cross‐coupling between dipoles. Experimental and simulation results demonstrate this approach's ability to precisely control circular dichroism (CD) from a non‐chiral state to various activated and enhanced chirality. Enhancing CD with high precision and continuous control manners can naturally provide an advanced opportunity and platform for the future design and actual applications of chiral optical systems.

Abstract:Time‐dependent density functional theory simulations are conducted on a series of chiral gold/silver alloy nanowires to explore whether silver doping can produce an enhancement of circular dichroism at the plasmon resonance. The quantum‐mechanical origin of the observed effects is identified. We find a strong plasmonic dichroism when one or two helixes of gold atoms are substituted by silver in a linear chiral nanotube, whose pure gold counterpart does not display any plasmonic dichroism, and we rationalize this finding in terms of "decoupling" the destructive interference of excitations in the pure gold nanotube via alloying. Abstract:Chirality, which has long been known as an intrinsic property of living organisms, has caught the interest of researchers due to the rapid emergence of chiral metamaterials. The chiroptical response of noble metal nanostructures in visible and near-infrared regions has been widely investigated. Herein, we propose a bilayer Ag metastructure, in which a chiral L-shaped nanostructure at the bottom is coupled with an achiral nanorod acquiring different positions in the top layer with respect to the long and/or short arm of the chiral L-shaped nanostructure at the bottom layer. The metastructure generates a giant circular dichroism (CD) signal resulting from the strong coupling of the multipolar and dipolar resonant modes on the two layers, in the visible and near-infrared regions. With changing the position of the achiral nanorod, an unusual reversal of the CD spectra is observed, along with a fourfold increase in CD intensity in the short wavelength range due to the multipolar resonant modes. The position of the achiral nanorod is tailored by the azimuthal angle of the substrate during the fabrication of the metastructure using the oblique angle deposition method. This study provides insights into the variation of the coupling strength between a chiral L-shaped nanostructure and an achiral nanorod. The results can be useful in designing chiral-achiral composite nanoantennas for sensing devices.

Direct-write 3D printing of plasmonic nanohelicoids by circularly polarized light

Abstract:Chiral plasmonic surfaces with 3D "forests" from nanohelicoids should provide strong optical rotation due to alignment of helical axis with propagation vector of photons. However, such three-dimensional nanostructures also demand multi-step nanofabrication, which is incompatible with many substrates. Large-scale photonic patterns on polymeric and flexible substrates remain unattainable. Here, we demonstrate the substrate-tolerant direct-write printing and patterning of silver nanohelicoids with out-of-plane 3D orientation using circularly polarized light. Centimeter-scale chiral plasmonic surfaces can be produced within minutes using inexpensive medium-power lasers. The growth of nanohelicoids is driven by the symmetry-broken site-selective deposition and self-assembly of the silver nanoparticles (NPs). The ellipticity and wavelength of the incident photons control the local handedness and size of the printed nanohelicoids, which enables on-the-fly modulation of nanohelicoid chirality during direct writing and simple pathways to complex multifunctional metasurfaces. Processing simplicity, high polarization rotation, and fine spatial resolution of the light-driven printing of stand-up helicoids provide a rapid pathway to chiral plasmonic surfaces, accelerating the development of chiral photonics for health and information technologies.

Abstract:Chiral materials are crucial components in the natural world, and the exploration of chiral materials hold significant importance in advancing areas such as chiral sensing, bio-marking. The integration of Bound States in the Continuum (BICs) in the design of chiral metasurfaces has emerged as a focal point in optical research, offering widespread research value and practical applications. The chiral dielectric metasurface proposed in this paper is formed by a combination of silicon nanorod, annular cylinder, and silicon dioxide substrate. Through selective detaching, we simultaneously break the structural mirror symmetry and in-plane inversion symmetry, thereby eliciting quasi-BICs and intrinsic chirality. This design achieves dual-band chiral responses, yielding a maximum circular dichroism (CD) of 0.979 and a Q-factor of 1517.5. By adjusting the structural parameters, the tunability of the structure is achieved. The study of the sensing performance of the metasurface resulted in a maximum sensitivity (S) of 270.6 nm/RIU and a maximum Figure of Merit (FOM) of 587.5. Additionally, By comparing the sensing performance with achiral structure, we verified the enhancement of sensing performance through chiral effects. The proposed chiral metasurface advances the practical application of chirality in fields such as biosensing.

Abstract:Arranging semiconducting nanocrystals into ordered superstructures is a promising platform to study fundamental light-matter interactions and develop programmable optical metamaterials. We investigated how the geometrical arrangement of CdS nanocrystals in hierarchical assemblies affects chiroptical properties. To create these structures, we controlled the evaporation of a colloidal CdS nanocrystal solution between two parallel plates. We combined in situ microscopy and computational modeling to establish a formation mechanism involving the shear-induced alignment of nanocrystal fibers and the subsequent mechanical relaxation of the stretched fibers to form Raman noodle-type band textures. The high linear anisotropy in these films shares many similarities with cholesteric liquid crystals. The films deposited on top and bottom surfaces exhibit opposite chirality. The mechanistic insights from this study are consequential to enable future advances in the design and fabrication of programmable optical metamaterials for further development of polarization-based optics toward applications in sensing, hyperspectral imaging, and quantum information technology.
