Abstract:Recent patents and progress on all-optical binary pattern recognition using the passive correlator and all-optical logic gates have been reviewed. The correlator is relative simpler and easy to be implemented, however the path number of the correlator is dependent on the length of target pattern. In contrast, the pattern recognition system based on all-optical SOA logic gates can be a promising alternative even for high bit-rate optical signals. It is shown that, the gate count can be reduced dramatically when employing serial logical processing, which allows also reconfiguration capability of the target patterns. © 2013 Bentham Science Publishers.

Abstract:In this paper, a programmable binary pattern recognition system that also indicates the temporal position of the matched target sequence is described. The system employs all-optical logic gates, and the number of gates required by the system is independent of the length of the target bit sequence. Experimental results with 42.6 Gb/s input data and target patterns up to 256 bits in length are presented.

Abstract:All-optical high-speed binary data pattern recognition is one of the key technologies in network security applications. A serial pattern recognition scheme is presented, which can detect and locate a specified random target pattern within an input data sequence at high bit-rate. The logic operation principle is presented using logic equations. The logic AND/XNOR gates and a recirculating loop at 10.65–42.6 Gbit/s are successfully demonstrated using three semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) based gates. The experiments have successfully demonstrated the random pattern recognition up to 256–bits at 42.6 Gbit/s.

Abstract:Symbolic substitution is a method of computing based on parallel binary pattern replacement, that can be implemented with simple optical components and regular free-space interconnection schemes. A two-dimensional pattern is searched for in parallel in an array and is replaced with another pattern. Pattern transformation rules can be applied sequentially or in parallel to realize complex functions. When the substitution space is modified to be loge SIT connected for N binary spots, and masks are allowed to customize the system, then optical digital circuits using symbolic substitution for network interconnects can be made nearly as efficient in terms of gate count and circuit depth as conventional arbitrary interconnection schemes allow. We describe an optical setup that requires no more than a fanin and fanout of two using optically nonlinear logic devices and a free space interconnection scheme based on symbolic substitution.

Abstract:The theory optical logic coder based on multimode interference self-imaging principle is demonstrated.We concretely design a 1-D 2~3 bit optical logic coder using partial phase modulation method.According to beam propagation method,the simulation results obtained by Beamprop software are discussed and some input parameters are optimized.Different modulation methods produce different Boolean logic states with the extinction ratio higher than 11 dB.

Abstract:Computational imaging, as a novel technology utilizing encoded image acquisition, relies on intelligent decoding methods for effective image restoration and sensing. Optical computing-based decoders can efficiently process and extract features from pre-sensor information, reducing the computational burden on digital computers. However, mainstream parallel optical neural network (ONN) architectures based on wavefront propagation typically possess complex network structures and high-precision parameters, which pose challenges in terms of precise fabrication and system calibration, as well as sensitivity to signal-to-noise ratios. In this work, a binary-weighted optical computing engine is proposed with spatial multiplexing and aggregation (B-OSMA), a large-scale passive ONN implementation that achieves high-efficiency image sensing. Employing B-OSMA as an optical decoder, demonstrated image categorizing from 2% compressive is experimented sampling with 92.0% and 83.8% accuracy on MNIST and fashion-MNIST datasets, respectively, approaching the performance of full-precision electronic computing while reducing storage requirements by 97%. Compared to conventional ONNs with analog weights, the B-OSMA exhibits enhanced resilience against systematic errors and ambient noise. This work represents a significant advancement towards practical applications of optical computing in image sensing. A novel binary-weighted optical computing implementation with spatial multiplexing and aggregation (B-OSMA) scheme achieves high-efficiency image sensing. Coupling with a light-weighted digital discriminator, B-OSMA demonstrates good performances that are competitive to full-precision electric computing on MNIST and Fashion-MNIST datasets, with greatly reduced storage consumption and promoted resilience against systematic errors and ambient noise. image

Abstract:An optical diffractive neural network (DNN) can be implemented with a cascaded phase mask architecture. Like an optical computer, the system can perform machine learning tasks such as number digit recognition in an all-optical manner. However, the system can work only under coherent light illumination, and the precision requirement in practical experiments is quite high. This Letter proposes an optical machine learning framework based on single-pixel imaging (MLSPI). The MLSPI system can perform the same linear pattern recognition task as DNN. Furthermore, it can work under incoherent lighting conditions, has lower experimental complexity, and can be easily programmable.

The performance of the proposed system is analyzed under the assumption of Poisson shot noise model for the receiver photodetector. Abstract:An all-optical label recognition method is proposed, which is based on the fiber Bragg grating encoder/decoder and a semiconductor optical amplifier, employing multiple two-dimensional optical orthogonal codes for optical label in optical packet switching system. The program effectively reduces the code autocorrelation/cross-correlation requirements of label identification and removes the cross-correlation pulses after decoding, greatly increases the coding capacity and number of available labels, and improves the reliability of label identification, using the fiber Bragg grating as a decoder and four-wave mixing in the semiconductor optical amplifier. The feasibility of the method is validated by the simulation of OptiSystem software. The simulation also shows that the label has a relatively high extinction ratio and can be operated easily.

Abstract:A novel phase-shifted optical analog-to-digital conversion proposal is presented and analyzed. Using an unbalanced MZM and specifically designed filter array, the desired phase shift between adjacent quantization channels can be realized. Comparing with existing schemes, the main advantage of this scheme is only one EOM and two wavelengths needed, regardless of the quantization resolution. Utilizing commercial products, analysis indicated that the number of bits as high as 8-bit and sampling rate up to 40GS/s can be realized.

Abstract:The development of information technology urgently requires ultrafast, ultra-low energy consumption and ultra-high-capacity data computing abilities. Traditional computing method of electronic chips is limited by the bottleneck of Moore’s Law. All-optical computing of photonic chips provides a promising way to realize such high-performance data computing abilities. Until now, it is still a huge challenge to realize all-optical four arithmetic operations at the same time on a photonic chip. Here, we propose a new encoding scheme for all-optical binary computation, including n-bit addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We theoretically present n-bit calculation and experimentally demonstrate 1 bit calculation. The computation part includes a half binary adder and a shifter, whose feature sizes are only 2 μm × 19.5 μm and 4 μm × 9 μm, respectively. The half binary adder and shifter consist of three low-loss basic devices through inverse design method. The distance between two adjacent basic devices is smaller than 1.5 μm, within wavelength magnitude scale. The response time is the propagation time of the signal light in a single device, within 100 fs. The threshold energy consumption is within 10 fJ/bit. Our results provide a new method to realize ultrafast, ultra-low energy consumption and ultra-high-capacity data processing abilities all-optical n-bit binary computing.

Abstract:In this paper we are going to propose a novel optical structure that can work as an optical combined half adder/subtractor. The proposed structure has 3 output ports. O1 is the common output port for adder and subtractor which can work as the sum/difference port of the proposed structure. O2 is the carry port of the optical adder and O3 is the borrow port of the optical subtractor. The working mechanism of the proposed structure is based on threshold switching, therefore three nonlinear ring resonators were combined with some optical waveguides. The maximum rise time of the proposed structure is 3 ps.

Abstract:Abstract Complex-valued neural networks have many advantages over their real-valued counterparts. Conventional digital electronic computing platforms are incapable of executing truly complex-valued representations and operations. In contrast, optical computing platforms that encode information in both phase and magnitude can execute complex arithmetic by optical interference, offering significantly enhanced computational speed and energy efficiency. However, to date, most demonstrations of optical neural networks still only utilize conventional real-valued frameworks that are designed for digital computers, forfeiting many of the advantages of optical computing such as efficient complex-valued operations. In this article, we highlight an optical neural chip (ONC) that implements truly complex-valued neural networks. We benchmark the performance of our complex-valued ONC in four settings: simple Boolean tasks, species classification of an Iris dataset, classifying nonlinear datasets (Circle and Spiral), and handwriting recognition. Strong learning capabilities (i.e., high accuracy, fast convergence and the capability to construct nonlinear decision boundaries) are achieved by our complex-valued ONC compared to its real-valued counterpart.

Abstract:In this letter, we propose an all-optical parallel scheme for the exclusive-or (XOR) logic processing, in which the bright and dark pixels of an image source are adopted to represent the binary data. Two orthogonally polarized coherent light beams are overlapped using a 50/50 beam splitter, and are then checked using a polarization analyzer. The distribution of light intensity of final output image is the result of the XOR logic operation on the input pixels.

Abstract:Diffractive deep neural network is architectural designs based on the principles of neural networks, which consists of multiple diffraction layers and has the remarkable ability to perform machine learning tasks at the speed of light. In this paper, a novel optical authentication system was presented that utilizes the diffractive deep neural network principle. By carefully manipulating a light beam with both a public key and a private key, we are able to generate a unique and secure image representation at a precise distance. The generated image can undergo authentication by being processed through the proposed authentication system. Leveraging the utilization of invisible terahertz light, the certification system possesses inherent characteristics of concealment and enhanced security. Additionally, the entire certification process operates solely through the manipulation of the light beam, eliminating the need for electronic calculations. As a result, the system offers rapid certification speed. The proposed optical authentication scheme is further validated through computer simulations, which showcase its robust security and high precision. This method holds immense potential for diverse applications in optical neural network authentication, warranting a broad scope of future prospects.

Abstract:We propose a novel communication technique which utilizes a set of mutually distinguishable optical patterns instead of convergent facula to transmit information. The communication capacity is increased by exploiting the optical spatial bandwidth resources. An optimum detector for this communication is proposed based on maximum-likelihood decision. The fundamental rule of designing signal spatial pattern is formulated from analysis of the probability of error decision.
