Abstract: This paper is concerned with the asymptotic behavior of the solution to the semilinear parabolic equation with dynamical boundary condition. Our main goal is to prove the convergence of a global solution to an equilibrium as time goes to infinity by means of a suitable \L ojasiewicz--Simon type inequality.

Abstract:The asymptotic behavior of global solutions of nonlinear evolution equations, in particular convergence to a certain equilibrium as time tends to infinity has become one of the main concerns in the field of nonlinear evolution equations since 1980s. For one space dimension case, significant progresses have been made (see e.g., [6]). However, the situation in higher space dimension case is much more complicated. There are counterexamples (e.g., [7]) showing that even if the nonlinearity of a semilinear parabolic equation belongs to C, the ω-limit set of its bounded global solution could be diffeomorphic to the unit circle S. Many assumptions have been made to ensure the convergence for bounded global solutions in the literature. In 1983, L. Simon [10] made the breakthrough that if the nonlinearity of a nonlinear parabolic equation is analytic in the dependent variable, then the convergence holds. His idea relies on the extension of a gradient inequality by S. Łojasiewicz for analytic functions defined in R (Ref. [5]) to the infinite-dimensional space. Since then, a lot of work has been done in this direction (see e.g., [1–4, 9, 13] and the references therein). However, most of the previous work is concerned with evolution equations subject to homogeneous boundary conditions. For many nonlinear evolution equations with other type boundary conditions (for instance, the dynamical boundary condition) which are very important from the physical point of view, the framework in the previous literature as well as the Łojasiewicz-Simon inequality which plays a crucial role cannot apply directly. In this short note we present some results on the study of convergence of global solutions for some nonlinear evolution equations with dynamical boundary condition. Under the basic assumption that the nonlinearity is analytic with respect to the dependent variable, we develop several new Łojasiewicz-Simon type inequalities (with boundary term) which vary from problem to problem (Ref. [11, 12, 14–16]) and obtain the convergence result as well as the estimates for convergence rate.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate positive solutions of the degenerate parabolic equation not in divergence form: ut=upΔu+auq−bur, subject to the null Dirichlet boundary condition. We at first discuss the existence and nonexistence of global solutions to the problem, and then study the large time behavior for the global solutions. When the positive source dominates the model, we prove that the global solutions uniformly tend to the positive steady state of the problem as t→∞. In particular, we establish the uniform asymptotic profiles for the decay solutions when the problem is governed by the nonlinear diffusion or absorption.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the asymptotic behavior of global solutions to a parabolic-hyperbolic coupled system which describes the evolution of the relative temperature theta and the order parameter chi in a material subject to phase transitions. For the system with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions for both theta and chi, under the assumption that the nonlinearities lambda and Phi are real analytic functions, we prove the convergence of a global solution to an equilibrium as time goes to infinity by means of a suitable Lojasiewicz-Simon type inequality.

In this paper we first establish the existence and uniqueness of a global strong solution to (0.1)–(0.4). Abstract:This paper is concerned with the asymptotic behavior of the solution to the following damped semilinear wave equation with critical exponent: u tt + u t - Δu + f(x, u) = 0, (x,t) ∈ Ω × R + (0.1) subject to the dissipative boundary condition ∂ ν u+u+u t = 0, t > 0, x ∈ Γ (0.2) and the initial conditions u| t=0 = u 0 (x), u t | t=0 = u 1 (x), x ∈ Ω, (0.3) where Ω is a bounded domain in R 3 with smooth boundary F, v is the outward normal direction to the boundary, and f is analytic in u. In this paper convergence of the solution to an equilibrium as time goes to infinity is proved. While these types of results are known for the damped semilinear wave equation with interior dissipation and Dirichlet boundary condition, this is, to our knowledge, the first result with dissipative boundary condition and critical growth exponent.

Abstract:This paper concerns the asymptotic behavior of global solutions to the initial-boundary value problem of a mixed pseudo-parabolic -Laplacian equation. By employing the potential well method and Lagrange multiplier method, we prove the existence of ground state solutions for the stationary problem. Then by applying the Sobolev imbedding inequality and the H lder inequality, we establish a convergence relationship between the global solutions of the evolution problem and the ground state solutions of the corresponding stationary problem.

Abstract:In this paper, the parabolic equation with oblique derivative boundary condition is considered. The long time behavior of the solution is derived by selecting the appropriate auxiliary functions and making priori estimates. Through blow up analysis, time-dependent gradient estimates are obtained, followed by second-order derivative estimates. Then, the convergence of smooth solution to parabolic equations with the oblique derivative boundary condition is obtained using standard theory.

Abstract:Let u be a solution of a second order semilinear parabolic equation which satisfies either Dirichlet or mixed boundary conditions. Let v be a stationary solution of this problem. Then by substituting $u = v + \varepsilon w$, and omitting terms of higher order in $\varepsilon $ than $O( \varepsilon )$, we may formally derive a linear problem. In this paper we discuss the asymptotic behavior of solutions u of the nonlinear problem in relation to such behavior of solutions w of the linear problem. We show that if, for some $\lambda _0 > 0$, $w = O( {e^{ - \lambda _0 t} } )$ as $t \to \infty $ (in the supremum norm), then $u - v = O( {e^{ - \lambda _0 t} } )$ as $t \to \infty $ for suitably restricted initial data, provided the nonlinear term in the original problem is sufficiently smooth in a neighborhood of v. An example is given which demonstrates that without this smoothness condition, the convergence of u towards v may take place at a slower rate than is the case for the linear problem.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the Cahn-Hilliard equation endowed with Wentzell boundary condition which is a model of phase separation in a binary mixture contained in a bounded domain with permeable wall. Under the assumption that the nonlinearity is analytic with respect to unknown dependent function, we prove the convergence of a global solution to an equilibrium as time goes to infinity by means of a suitable Łojasiewicz-Simon type inequality with boundary term. Estimates of convergence rate are also provided.

Abstract:Convergence to stationary solutions in fully nonlinear parabolic systems with general nonlinear boundary conditions is shown in situations where the set of stationary solutions creates a $C^2$-manifold of finite dimension which is normally stable. We apply the parabolic Hölder setting which allows to deal with nonlocal terms including highest order point evaluation. In this direction some theorems concerning the linearized systems is also extended. As an application of our main result we prove that the lens-shaped networks generated by circular arcs are stable under the surface diffusion flow.

Abstract:We consider a class of Cahn-Hilliard equation that models phase separation process of binary mixtures involving nontrivial boundary interactions in a bounded domain with non-permeable wall. The system is characterized by certain dynamic type boundary conditions and the total mass, in the bulk and on the boundary, is conserved for all time. For the case with physically relevant singular (e.g., logarithmic) potential, global regularity of weak solutions is established. In particular, when the spatial dimension is two, we show the instantaneous strict separation property such that for arbitrary positive time any weak solution stays away from the pure phases +/- 1, while in the three dimensional case, an eventual separation property for large time is obtained. As a consequence, we prove that every global weak solution converges to a single equilibrium as t -> infinity, by the usage of an extended Lojasiewicz-Simon inequality.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to investigate the stability and asymptotic behavior of the time-dependent solutions to a linear parabolic equation with nonlinear boundary condition in relation to their corresponding steady state solutions. Then, the above results are extended to a semilinear parabolic equation with nonlinear boundary condition by analyzing the corresponding eigenvalue problem and using the method of upper and lower solutions.

Abstract:We consider a Ginzburg-Landau-Maxwell model which describes the behavior of a two-dimensional superconducting material. The state variables are the complex-valued order parameter psi the magnetic potential (A) over cap A, and the electric potential F. Under the choice of Coulomb ( i.e., London) gauge, the resulting system is a parabolic-hyperbolic coupled system of nonlinear partial differential equations subject to suitable boundary and initial conditions. Global well-posedness results were proved in [ M. Tsutsumi and H. Kasai, Nonlinear Anal., 37 ( 1999), pp. 187-216], while the existence of global attractor and exponential attractors was proved in [ V. Berti and S. Gatti, Quart. Appl. Math., 64 2006), pp. 617-639]. In this paper we use an extended Lojasiewicz-Simon approach to show that for any initial datum in certain phase space, the corresponding global solution converges to an equilibrium as time goes to infinity. Besides, we also provide an estimate on the convergence rate with respect to the phase space metric.

Abstract:The numerical approximations of the dynamical systems governed by semilinear parabolic equations are considered. An abstract framework for long-time error estimates is established. When applied to reaction-diffusion equation, Navier-Stokes equations and Chan Hilliard equation, approximated by Galerkin and nonlinear Galerkin methods in space and by Runge-Kutta method in time, our framework yields error estimates uniform in time.

Abstract:In this article, we consider a Cahn-Hilliard model with boundary conditions of Wentzell type and mass conservation. We show that each solution of this problem converges to a steady state as time goes to infinity, provided that the potential function f is real analytic and satisfies certain growth assumptions. Estimates of the rate of convergence to equilibrium are obtained as well. We also recall some results about the existence of global and exponential attractors and their properties.

Abstract:We study the convergence to equilibria, as time tends to infinity, of trajectories of dissipative wave systems with time‐dependent velocity feedbacks and subject to nonlinear potential energies. Estimates for the speed of convergence are obtained in terms of the damping coefficient and the Łojasiewicz–Simon exponent. We allow for both restoring and amplifying effects of exterior forces, which makes our results possess wide applicability. Abstract:We investigate a nonlinear autonomous parabolic partial differential equation in one space variable subject to Neumann boundary conditions on a compact interval. The object of our study is to determine the asymptotic behavior of solutions. Our methods are borrowed from the Liapunov theory of stability for dynamical systems. We give conditions under which a solution has a nonempty ω-limit set. We show that any such ω-limit set consists solely of equilibrium solutions. We render criteria for asymptotic stability and for instability of an equilibrium solution. We examine the possibility of escape behavior.

Abstract:We consider a coupled bulk-surface Allen-Cahn system affixed with a Robin-type boundary condition between the bulk and surface variables. This system can also be viewed as a relaxation to a bulk-surface Allen-Cahn system with non-trivial transmission conditions. Assuming that the nonlinearities are real analytic, we prove the convergence of every global strong solution to a single equilibrium as time tends to infinity. Furthermore, we obtain an estimate on the rate of convergence. The proof relies on an extended Lojasiewicz-Simon type inequality for the bulk-surface coupled system. Compared with previous works, new difficulties arise as in our system the surface variable is no longer the trace of the bulk variable, but now they are coupled through a nonlinear Robin boundary condition.
