Abstract:A novel nanocatalyst, denoted as UiO-66/Sal-ZnCl 2 , has been synthesized and systematically characterized employing a range of analytical techniques, including Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area analysis, and inductively coupled plasma (ICP) analysis. The comprehensive analyses collectively affirm the effective coordination of zinc chloride onto the functionalized UiO-66. Subsequently, the catalytic efficacy of UiO-66/Sal-ZnCl 2 was assessed in a one-pot, three-component click reaction involving terminal alkynes, alkyl halides, and sodium azide, conducted in an aqueous medium. The catalyst demonstrated remarkable catalytic activity, showcasing the capability to facilitate the reaction with high yields and exceptional regioselectivity. Noteworthy attributes of this nanocatalyst and the method include its elevated efficiency, recyclability, convenient product workup, and, significantly, the utilization of a sustainable solvent medium. The synthesis, characterization, and catalytic performance of this catalyst collectively contribute to its potential as an innovative and reusable nanocatalyst for diverse synthetic transformations.

Systematic Engineering of Single Substitution in Zirconium Metal-Organic Frameworks Toward High-Performance Catalysis.

Abstract:Zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) exhibit great structural tunability and outstanding chemical stability, rendering them promising candidates for a wide range of practical applications. In this work, we synthesized a series of isostructural PCN-224 analogues functionalized by ethyl, bromo, chloro, and fluoro groups on the porphyrin unit, which allowed us to explicitly study the effects of electron-donating and electron-withdrawing substituents on catalytic performance in MOFs. Owing to the different electronic properties of ethyl, bromo, chloro, and fluoro substitutes, the molecular-level control over the chemical environment surrounding a catalytic center could be readily achieved in our MOFs. To investigate the effects of these substitutes on catalytic activity and selectivity, the oxidation of 3-methylpentane to corresponding alcohols and ketones was utilized as a model reaction. Within these five analogues of PCN-224, an extremely high turnover number of 7680 and turnover frequency of 10 240 h-1 was achieved by simply altering the substitutes on porphyrin rings. Moreover, a remarkable 99% selectivity of the tertiary alcohol over the five other possible by-products are realized. We demonstrate that this strategy can be used to efficiently screen a suitable peripheral environment around catalytic cores in MOFs for catalysis.

Abstract:We report the quantitative conversion of [MIV6(μ3-O)4(μ3-OH)4Cl12]6- nodes in the MCl2-BTC metal-organic framework into the [MIII6(μ3-O)4(μ3-ONa)4H6]6- nodes in MIIIH-BTC (M = Zr, Hf; BTC is 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate) via bimetallic reductive elimination of H2 from putative [MIV6(μ3-O)4(μ3-OH)4H12]6- nodes. The coordinatively unsaturated MIIIH centers in MIIIH-BTC are highly active and selective for 1,4-dearomative hydroboration and hydrosilylation of pyridines and quinolines. This work demonstrated the potential of secondary building unit transformation in generating electronically unique and homogeneously inaccessible single-site solid catalysts for organic synthesis.
Creating Well-Defined Hexabenzocoronene In Zirconium Metal-Organic Framework By Postsynthetic Annulation

Abstract:The incorporation of large pi-conjugated ligands into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can introduce intriguing photophysical and electrochemical properties into the framework. However, these effects are often hindered by the strong pi-pi interaction and the low solubility of the arylated ligands. Herein, we report the synthesis of a porous zirconium-based MOF, Zr-6(mu(3)-O)(4)(mu(3)-OH)(4)(OH)(6)(H2O)(6)(HCHC) (PCN-136, HCHC = hexakis(4-carboxyphenyl)hexabenzocoronene), which is composed of a hexacarboxylate linker with a pi-conjugated hexabenzocoronene moiety. Direct assembly of the Zr4+ metal centers and the HCHC ligands was unsuccessful due to the low solubility and the unfavorable conformation of the arylated HCHC ligand. Therefore, PCN-136 was obtained from aromatization-driven postsynthetic annulation of the hexaphenylbenzene fragment in a preformed framework (pbz-MOF-1) to avoid pi-pi stacking. This postsynthetic modification was done through a single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation and was clearly observable utilizing single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The formation of large pi-conjugated systems on the organic linker dramatically enhanced the photoresponsive properties of PCN-136. With isolated hexabenzocoronene moieties as photosensitizers and Zr-oxo clusters as catalytic sites, PCN-136 was employed as an inherent photocatalytic system for CO2 reduction under visible-light irradiation, which showed increased activity compared with pbz-MOF-1.
Phenanthroline-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks For Fe-Catalyzed C-Sp3-H Amination

Abstract:We report here the synthesis of a robust and highly porous Fe-phenanthroline-based metal-organic framework (MOF) and its application in catalyzing challenging inter-and intramolecular C-H amination reactions. For the intermolecular amination reactions, a FeBr2-metalated MOF selectively functionalized secondary benzylic and allylic C-H bonds. The intramolecular amination reactions utilizing organic azides as the nitrene source required the reduction of the FeBr2-metalated MOF with NaBHEt3 to generate the active catalyst. For both reactions, Fe or Zr leaching was less than 0.1%, and MOFs could be recycled and reused with no loss in catalytic activity. Furthermore, MOF catalysts were significantly more active than the corresponding homogeneous analogs. This work demonstrates the great potential of MOFs in generating highly active, recyclable, and reusable earth abundant metal catalysts for challenging organic transformations.

Abstract:A major goal of metal-organic framework (MOF) research is to control the structures and functions of materials in accordance with their specific applications. However, due to the flexible coordination modes between metal ions and organic linkers in MOFs, it is still challenging to rationally assemble a framework with deliberate structures and desired functional groups. Sometimes, two or more phases coexist in a one-pot reaction, making them difficult to separate. To this end, sieving and purification of MOF mixtures become vital for the following application. Herein, we demonstrate that the formation of zirconium-based MOFs (Zr-MOFs) can be regulated in a wider two-dimensional scale by thermodynamics using auxiliary linkers. The auxiliary linkers favor the formation of the targeted Zr-MOF by selectively binding to its coordination vacancies and therefore increasing its formation enthalpy to achieve the sieving of MOF mixture. Furthermore, the resulting mixed-linkers MOFs not only maintain porosities but also contain the installed auxiliary linkers as chemical handles to further incorporate functional groups, providing the possibility of introduction of active sites through post-modification. Finally, this synthetic strategy was applied to assemble a cooperative catalytic system in a MOF platform for CO2 cycloaddition with epoxides. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of sieving and functionalization of MOFs through insertion and post-modification of auxiliary linkers.
Gold-like Thiolate-Protected Ultrasmall Cubic Copper Nanocluster-Based Metal-Organic Framework as a Selective Catalyst for Stepwise Synthesis of Unsymmetric Bistriazole by Click Reaction

Abstract:We report a facile synthesis of a thiolate-protected water-soluble ultrasmall cubic copper nanocluster-based metal-organic framework (CuMOF) as an efficient and chemoselective catalyst for the azide-alkyne click reaction. Interestingly, the diffuse reflectance spectra of CuMOFs exhibit three discrete plasmon bands at 463, 505, and 674 nm, which are similar to those corresponding to the fingerprint region of thiolate-protected atomically precise Au25 nanoclusters; hence, CuMOFs are termed as gold-like ultrasmall cubic copper nanoclusters. The high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns confirm the cubic morphology of CuMOFs with nanoclusters showing particle size distribution of ∼2-12 nm. The matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) spectrum of CuMOFs is attributed to the individual particles consisting of few Cun(SR)m with Cu(0) core atoms and Cu(I)SR staples, i.e., Cu2(SR)4, Cu(SR)6, Cu3(SR)7, and Cu4(SR)8. To our surprise, the unsymmetric bistriazoles resulting from the click reaction of bifunctional azides and alkynes in the presence of CuMOFs were achieved by step-by-step conversion of the terminal azide selectively with maximum yield in the range of 70-88%. The nitrogen adsorption-desorption studies confirm the size-dependent surface area, pore volume, and pore size for the CuMOFs prepared by varying metal-to-ligand ratios. The plausible mechanism for the selective mono-click at CuMOFs suggests the existence of bifunctional terminal interactions via thiol and sulfonate groups that might have provided the site-isolation-based active sites for selective catalysis. The easy recovery of CuMOFs and their reusability up to 5 times without significant loss of activity are very promising for the selective organic conversions in pharmaceutical and industrial formulations.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have played a pivotal role in catalysis, driven by their remarkable surface area and structural versatility. The structural manipulation of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) has shed light on the impact of size, facet orientation, and functional groups in enhancing their catalytic performance. However, these strategies possess inherent limitations, necessitating the pursuit of novel avenues. This study introduces an innovative methodology to elucidate the intricate interplay between ZIF structure and catalytic activity. This involves externally modifying existing ZIF nanocrystals through precise carving, resulting in the creation of heterogeneous porous architectures. Through the chemical etching of core metal nanoparticles within ZIF-8 nanocrystals, the introduction of heterogeneous internal mesoporosity within ZIF-8 emerges, providing effective mass transport and uncoordinated active sites for enhanced heterogeneous catalysis. The effectiveness of this porous inner space is demonstrated through the Knoevenagel condensation reaction. Four different types of ZIF-8 crystal structures undergo evaluation for catalytic activity: pristine ZIF nanocubes, etched ZIF nanocubes, ZIFs with gold nanorod cores, and ZIFs with inner etched spaces. This innovative approach, centered on introducing heterogeneous porosity within ZIF-8, offers promising prospects for the design of ZIF-based catalysts boasting exceptional catalytic efficiency in various organic transformations.

High-degree Pd(II) metalation of the MOF was achieved through straightforward postsynthetic modification, with detailed coordination chemistry elucidated spectroscopically. Abstract:Recently, Zr- and Ti-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have gathered increasing interest in the field of chemistry and materials science, not only for their ordered porous structure, large surface area, and high thermal and chemical stability, but also for their various potential applications. Particularly, the unique features of Zr- and Ti-based MOFs enable them to be a highly versatile platform for catalysis. Although much effort has been devoted to developing Zr- and Ti-based MOF materials, they still suffer from difficulties in targeted synthesis, especially for Ti-based MOFs. In this Feature Article, we discuss the evolution of Zr- and Ti-based MOFs, giving a brief overview of their synthesis and structures. Furthermore, the catalytic uses of Zr- and Ti-based MOF materials in the previous 3-5 years have been highlighted. Finally, perspectives on the Zr- and Ti-based MOF materials are also proposed. This work provides in-depth insight into the advances in Zr- and Ti-based MOFs and boosts their catalytic applications.

Abstract:An unprecedented three-dimensional supramolecular MOF, namely [Zn3(bpy)3 (SO4)4]·(Me2NH2)2·DMF·9H2O (1, where bpy = 4,4'-bipyridine, DMF = N,N′-dimethylformamide), has been efficaciously synthesized under the solvothermal reaction. A single-crystal structure determination showed that the wavelike [Zn3(bpy)(SO4)4] layers are pillared by pairs of bpy ligands to give a new 4,6-connected binodal self-penetrated network with overall (4264)(42687382) topology. 1 also has been fully identified characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, gas adsorption properties and so on. In addition, a new Cu(II)-MOF (cat1) was further prepared by postsynthetic exchange (PSE) synthetic approach based on compound 1, which is proved to be an active catalyst for the Friedel–Crafts reaction of indole with β-nitrostyrenes. The result from this work provides a new attempt to describe the crystallization of inorganic sulfate anion link to the organic functional group, and the functionalization-induced MOF gain insights for designing new functional MOF.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous materials composed of metal ions, clusters and organic ligands. Due to their outstanding chemical, thermal, and solvent stability, as well as numerous unsaturated metal sites, they have proven to be useful catalysts. In this study, MOFs were synthesized using hydrothermal methods with terephthalic acid and Ca, Mg, Al, and Cr nitrates. Subsequently, they were functionalized with diethylamine. The formation of MOF-Al and MOF-Cr structures was confirmed through characterization via XRD, FT-IR, and CHN analyses. However, the synthesis did not yield MOF structures with Ca and Mg as metal ions; instead, phthalates of Ca and Mg were obtained. SEM images revealed the particle size and morphology of the particles, which ranged between 0.2 and 1 μm. TGA/DTA curves revealed that the functionalized MOFs were the most thermally stable. Textural analysis by N 2 adsorption/desorption showed that MOF-Cr and MOF-Cr-NH 2 had high BET area values of 1,769.67 and 998.22 m 2 g −1 , respectively. MOFs were employed as catalysts in Knoevenagel condensation reactions to synthesize ( E )-ethyl 2-cyano-3-phenylacrylate and ( E )-methyl 2-cyano-3-phenylacrylate, indicating their potential for reactions requiring acidic or basic sites.

Abstract:Reactions of ZrCl(4) and single or mixed linear dicarboxylic acids bearing methyl or azide groups lead to highly stable isoreticular metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with content-tunable, accessible, reactive azide groups inside the large pores. These Zr-based MOFs offer an ideal platform for pore surface engineering by anchoring various functional groups with controlled loadings onto the pore walls via the click reaction, endowing the MOFs with tailor-made interfaces. Significantly, the framework and crystallinity of the functionalized MOFs are well-retained, and the engineered pore surfaces have been demonstrated to be readily accessible, thus providing more opportunities for powerful and broad applications of MOFs.

Abstract:Mesoporous K-ZrO2 are designed and synthesized through a direct heat-treatment process of a KNO3 loaded UiO-66 metal organic framework. Very interestingly, the carbon intermediates formed during the heat-treatment process can act both as mesoporous templates and base-resistant reinforcement for zirconia. The resultant mesoporous K-ZrO2 catalysts with high surface area show excellent catalytic performance in Knoevenagel condensations, especially for substrates with large molecular size. The mesoporous KZ also show enhanced activity when compared to KZ synthesized from traditional zirconium hydroxides. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first synthesis of a metal-oxide type solid base with a MOF precursor.
Regulated synthesis of Zr-metal–organic frameworks with variable hole size and its influence on the performance of novel MOF-based heterogeneous amino acid–thiourea catalysts

Abstract:We present an efficient and easy synthesis method for incorporating organocatalytic moieties into Zr-metal organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs). The catalytic activity and selectivity of the new chiral catalysts were improved by adjusting the aperture of the MOF cavities. The hole size of the Zr-MOF was modulated by adding acid and replacing bridge ligands during synthesis. The difunctional chiral units of amino acid–thiourea are anchored onto the Zr-MOF by a mild synthesis method from an isothiocyanate intermediate which could effectively avoid the racemization of chiral moieties in the synthesis process. By means of specific surface area measurement (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and powder X-ray Diffraction (PXRD), it was confirmed that Zr-MOFs with different pore sizes were synthesized without breaking the basic octahedral structure of the MOF. Finally, good yields (up to 83%) and ee values (up to 73%) were achieved with the new heterogeneous catalysts in 48 hours for the aldol reaction of 4-nitrobenzaldehyde with acetone. By contrast, using the catalyst support without modulating the synthesis, the yield (30%) and the ee-value (26%) were both low. Experiments have confirmed the important influence on the reaction selectivity of providing a suitable reaction environment by controlling the aperture of MOF cavities.

Abstract:The structure engineering of metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) forms the cornerstone of their applications. Nonetheless, realizing the simultaneous versatile structure engineering of MOFs remains a significant challenge. Herein, we propose a dynamically mediated synthesis strategy to simultaneously engineer the crystal structure, defect structure, and nanostructure of MOFs. These include amorphous Zr‐ODB nanoparticles, crystalline Zr‐ODB‐hz (ODB = 4,4′‐oxalyldibenzoate, hz = hydrazine) nanosheets, and defective d‐Zr‐ODB‐hz nanosheets. Aberration‐corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (AC‐STEM) combined with low‐dose high‐angle annular dark‐field (HAADF) imaging technique vividly portrays these engineered structures. Concurrently, the introduced hydrazine moieties confer self‐reduction properties to the respective MOF structures, allowing the in‐situ installation of catalytic Pd nanoparticles. Remarkably, in the hydrogenation of vanillin‐like biomass‐derivatives, Pd/Zr‐ODB‐hz yields partially hydrogenated alcohols as the primary products, whereas Pd/d‐Zr‐ODB‐hz exclusively produces fully hydrogenated alkanes. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations, coupled with experimental evidence, uncover the catalytic selectivity switch triggered by the change in structure type. The proposed strategy of versatile structure engineering of MOFs introduces an innovative pathway for the development of high‐performance MOF‐based catalysts for various reactions. Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as a highly tunable class of porous materials, and in particular, zirconium-based MOFs (Zr-MOFs) have demonstrated the potential to address challenges in a variety of practical applications due to their excellent chemical and thermal stabilities. However, Zr-MOFs are typically synthesized using flammable and toxic organic solvents. An effective, green, scalable route to obtain high-quality Zr-MOFs has yet to be developed as these procedures typically yield Zr-MOFs with relatively lower crystallinities and porosities than those obtained via the former route. Herein, we report the aqueous synthesis of MOF-808, a versatile Zr-MOF, that yields products with high crystallinities and porosities that are comparable to those of solvothermally synthesized MOF-808. We demonstrate that modifying the carboxylic acid-based modulator used in this hydrothermal procedure enables the straightforward tuning of the pore environment in MOF-808. This approach can be leveraged to tune both the water adsorption properties of MOF-808 and the solid-state catalytic performance of MOF-808 toward the hydrolysis of a nerve agent simulant. We anticipate that the insight gained here extends beyond MOF-808 and that it will lead to similar advancements for other Zr-MOFs.
