Abstract:Exploiting massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) gains come at the expense of obtaining accurate channel estimates at the base station. However, conventional channel estimation techniques do not scale well with increasing number of antennas and incur an unacceptably large training overhead in many applications. This calls for training designs and channel estimation techniques that efficiently exploit the physical properties of the massive MIMO channel as captured by sophisticated system/channel models. In this paper, we present designs that exploit the sparsity of the angle and delay domain representation of the massive MIMO channel as well as the low-rank property of the channel covariance, while also providing the connection between the sparse angle-delay representation and low-rank covariance property. Numerous multiuser scenarios are investigated including uplink, downlink, and single-and multi-cell communications, with the designs aiming at minimizing the channel estimation error or maximizing achievable rates with reduced training overhead. Theoretical analysis and numerical performance results indicate significant reduction of training overhead over conventional techniques while achieving similar performance. The presented methods demonstrate the importance of exploiting fundamental channel properties and reveal important insights on the interplay/tradeoff between training overhead and performance that can serve as guidelines for the design of future massive MIMO communication systems.

Abstract:Compared with a single-input-single-output (SISO) communication system, the benefit of multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) technology originates from its extra degree of freedom (DOF), also referred as scattering channels or spatial electromagnetic (EM) modes. As DOF has clear physical meaning, it is essential to model the DOF from EM perspective, other than using the classical empirical models. Here, we demonstrate an EM channel model for the DOF analyses of MIMO systems in arbitrary certain environments. Moreover, two numerical examples are given, including the free-space near-field communications and the key-hole communications.

Abstract:The authors propose an indoor ultra wide band-multi-in multi-out (MIMO) array system constructed using cone antennas mounted on the icosahedral structure. To analyse this structure, we employ our recently developed MIMO array numerical simulation model, viz., wave propagation model combining the multilevel Green's function interpolation method with the ray-tracing technique. The numerical results demonstrate that by using our proposed MIMO array structure, a very flat frequency response of MIMO channel capacity can be obtained with a broad bandwidth from 3 to 5 GHz.

Abstract:Assuming the availability of the channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) and receiver (CSIR), we consider the joint optimal transceiver design for multi-input multi-output (MIMO) communication systems. Using our recently developed generalized triangular decomposition (GTD), we propose a scheme, which we refer to as adaptable channel decomposition (ACD), to decompose a MIMO channel into multiple subchannels with prescribed capacities, or equivalently, signal-to-interference-and-noise ratios (SINR). We also determine the subchannel capacity region such that the channel decomposition is capacity lossless. This scheme is particularly relevant to the applications where independent data streams with different quality-of-services (QoS) share the same MIMO channel.

Abstract:The multi-user Holographic Multiple-Input and Multiple-Output Surface (MU-HMIMOS) paradigm, which is capable of realizing large continuous apertures with minimal power consumption and of shaping radio wave propagation at will, has been recently considered as an energy-efficient solution for future wireless networks. The tractable channel modeling of MU-HMIMOS signal propagation is one of the most critical challenges, mainly due to the coupling effect induced by the excessively large number of closely spaced patch antennas. In this paper, we focus on this challenge for downlink communications and model the electromagnetic channel in the wavenumber domain using the Fourier plane wave representation. Based on the proposed model, we devise a Zero-Forcing (ZF) precoding scheme, capitalizing on the sampled channel variance that depends on the number and spacing of the HMIMOS patch antennas, and perform a spectral efficiency analysis. Our simulation results showcase that the more patch antennas and the larger their spacing is, the performance of the considered MU-HMIMOS system improves. In addition, it is demonstrated that our theoretical performance expressions approximate sufficiently well the simulated spectral efficiency, even for the highly correlated cases, thus verifying the effectiveness and robustness of the presented analytical framework.

Abstract:Compared with a single-input-single-output (SISO) wireless communication system, the benefit of multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) technology originates from its extra degree of freedom (DOF), also referred to as scattering channels or spatial electromagnetic (EM) modes, brought by spatial multiplexing. When the physical sizes of transmitting and receiving arrays are fixed and there are sufficient antennas (typically with half-wavelength spacings), the DOF limit is only dependent on the propagating environment. Analytical methods can be used to estimate this limit in free space, and some approximate models are adopted in stochastic environments, such as Clarke’s model and Ray-tracing methods. However, this DOF limit in a certain inhomogeneous environment has not been well discussed with rigorous full-wave numerical methods. In this work, volume integral equation (VIE) is implemented for investigating the limit of MIMO effective degree of freedom (EDOF) in three representative two-dimensional (2-D) inhomogeneous environments. Moreover, we clarify the relation between the performance of a MIMO system and the scattering characteristics of its propagating environment.

Abstract:In recent years, considerable attention has been paid to the joint optimal transceiver design for multi-input multi-output (MIMO) communication systems. In this paper, we propose a joint transceiver design that combines the geometric mean decomposition (GMD) with either the conventional zero-forcing VBLAST decoder or the more recent zero-forcing dirty paper precoder (ZFDP). Our scheme decomposes a MIMO channel into multiple identical parallel subchannels, which can make it rather convenient to design modulation/demodulation and coding/decoding schemes. Moreover, we prove that our scheme is asymptotically optimal for (moderately) high SNR in terms of both channel throughput and bit error rate (BER) performance. This desirable property is not shared by any other conventional schemes. We also consider the subchannel selection issues when some of the subchannels are too poor to be useful. Our scheme can also be combined with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) for intersymbol interference (ISI) suppression. The effectiveness of our approaches has been validated by both theoretical analyses and numerical simulations.

Abstract:In the past few years considerable attention has been given to the design of Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) Eigenmode Transmission Systems (EMTS). This paper presents an in-depth analysis of a new MIMO eigenmode transmission strategy. The non-linear decomposition technique called Geometric Mean Decomposition (GMD) is employed for the formation of eigenmodes over MIMO flatfading channel. Exploiting GMD technique, identical, parallel and independent transmission pipes are created for data transmission at higher rate. The system based on such decomposition technique is referred to as MIMO Identical Eigenmode Transmission System (IETS). The comparative analysis of the MIMO transceiver design exploiting nonlinear and linear decomposition techniques for variable constellation is presented in this paper. The new transmission strategy is tested in combination with the Vertical Bell Labs Layered Space Time (V-BLAST) decoding scheme using different number of antennas on both sides of the communication link. The analysis is supported by various simulation results.

Abstract:Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels provide an abstract and unified representation of different physical communication systems, ranging from multi-antenna wireless channels to wireless digital subscriber line systems. They have the key property that several data streams can be simultaneously established.In general, the design of communication systems for MIMO channels is quite involved (if one can assume the use of sufficiently long and good codes, then the problem formulation simplifies drastically). The first difficulty lies on how to measure the global performance of such systems given the tradeoff on the performance among the different data streams. Once the problem formulation is defined, the resulting mathematical problem is typically too complicated to be optimally solved as it is a matrix-valued nonconvex optimization problem. This design problem has been studied for the past three decades (the first papers dating back to the 1970s) motivated initially by cable systems and more recently by wireless multi-antenna systems. The approach was to choose a specific global measure of performance and then to design the system accordingly, either optimally or suboptimally, depending on the difficulty of the problem.This text presents an up-to-date unified mathematical framework for the design of point-to-point MIMO transceivers with channel state information at both sides of the link according to an arbitrary cost function as a measure of the system performance. In addition, the framework embraces the design of systems with given individual performance on the data streams.Majorization theory is the underlying mathematical theory on which the framework hinges. It allows the transformation of the originally complicated matrix-valued nonconvex problem into a simple scalar problem. In particular, the additive majorization relation plays a key role in the design of linear MIMO transceivers (i.e., a linear precoder at the transmitter and a linear equalizer at the receiver), whereas the multiplicative majorization relation is the basis for nonlinear decision-feedback MIMO transceivers (i.e., a linear precoder at the transmitter and a decision-feedback equalizer at the receiver).

Abstract:This paper addresses the problem of downlink channel estimation in millimeter wave (mmWave) massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO)-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, where wideband frequency selective fading channels are considered. By exploiting the sparse scattering nature of mmWave channel, we consider channel estimation as three dimensional (3D) (including angles of departure/arrival and the time delay) line spectrum estimation. To achieve super-resolution channel estimation, we propose a decomposable 3D atomic norm minimization estimation method. This method decomposes the 3D estimation problem into two separate dimensions to reduce the computational complexity, where time delays are estimated only in the OFDM system. Simulation results show that the proposed method can achieve comparable mean square errors as the conventional vectorized ANM at much lower computational complexity.

Abstract:In a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) full-duplex network, where an in-band full-duplex infrastruc- ture node communicates with two half-duplex mobiles supporting simultaneous up- and downlink flows, the inter-mobile interference between the up- and downlink mobiles limits the system performance. We study the impact of leveraging an out-of-band side-channel between mobiles in such network under different channel models. For time-invariant channels, we aim to characterize the generalized degrees- of-freedom (GDoF) of the side-channel assisted MIMO full-duplex network. For slow-fading channels, we focus on the diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) of the system with various assumptions as to the availability of channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT). The key to the optimal performance is a vector bin-and-cancel strategy leveraging Han-Kobayashi message splitting, which is shown to achieve the system capacity region to within a constant bit. We quantify how the side-channel improve the GDoF and DMT compared to a system without the extra orthogonal spectrum. The insights gained from our analysis reveal: i) the tradeoff between spatial resources from multiple antennas at different nodes and spectral resources of the side-channel, and ii) the interplay between the channel uncertainty at the transmitter and use of the side-channel.

Abstract:This paper addresses the problem of joint linear transceiver design in the downlink of multiuser MIMO systems. We define the performance criterion as minimizing the maximal mean square error among all the data streams (max-MSE) under a total power constraint. The proposed algorithm is based on a dual decomposition technique and it iterates between close-formed precoder/decoder designs. The proposed algorithm outperforms most transceiver optimization algorithms in terms of BER performance. Compared to the algorithm which can achieve the same performance, it has a lower computational complexity.

Abstract:In frequency division duplex (FDD) massive MIMO systems, a major challenge lies in acquiring the downlink channel state information}\ (CSI) at the base station (BS) from limited feedback sent by the user equipment (UE). To tackle this fundamental task, our contribution is twofold: First, a simple feedback framework is proposed, where a compression and Gaussian dithering-based quantization strategy is adopted at the UE side, and then a maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) is formulated at the BS side. Recoverability of the MIMO channel under the widely used double directional model is established. Specifically, analyses are presented for two compression schemes -- showing one being more overhead-economical and the other computationally lighter at the UE side. Second, to realize the MLE, an alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) algorithm is proposed. The algorithm is carefully designed to integrate a sophisticated harmonic retrieval (HR) solver as subroutine, which turns out to be the key of effectively tackling this hard MLE <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://problem.Extensive" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> numerical experiments are conducted to validate the efficacy of our approach.

Abstract:Holographic multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems constitute a promising technology in support of next-generation wireless communications, thus paving the way for a smart programmable radio environment. However, despite its significant potential, further fundamental issues remain to be addressed, such as the acquisition of accurate channel information. Indeed, the conventional angular-domain channel representation is no longer adequate for characterizing the sparsity inherent in holographic MIMO channels. To fill this knowledge gap, in this article, we conceive a decomposition and reconstruction (DeRe)-based framework for facilitating the estimation of sparse channels in holographic MIMOs. In particular, the channel parameters involved in the steering vector, namely the azimuth and elevation angles plus the distance (AED), are decomposed for independently constructing their own covariance matrices. Then, the acquisition of each parameter can be formulated as a compressive sensing (CS) problem by harnessing the covariance matrix associated with each individual parameter. We demonstrate that our solution exhibits an improved performance and imposes a reduced pilot overhead, despite its reduced complexity. Finally, promising open research topics are highlighted to bridge the gap between the theory and the practical employment of holographic MIMO schemes.

Compressing MIMO Channel Submatrices with Tucker Decomposition: Enabling Efficient Storage and Reducing SINR Computation Overhead

Abstract:Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems employ a large number of antennas to achieve gains in capacity, spectral efficiency, and energy efficiency. However, the large antenna array also incurs substantial storage and computational costs. This paper proposes a novel data compression framework for massive MIMO channel matrices based on tensor Tucker decomposition. To address the substantial storage and computational burdens of massive MIMO systems, we formulate the high-dimensional channel matrices as tensors and propose a novel groupwise Tucker decomposition model. This model efficiently compresses the tensorial channel representations while reducing SINR estimation overhead. We develop an alternating update algorithm and HOSVD-based initialization to compute the core tensors and factor matrices. Extensive simulations demonstrate significant channel storage savings with minimal SINR approximation errors. By exploiting tensor techniques, our approach balances channel compression against SINR computation complexity, providing an efficient means to simultaneously address the storage and computational challenges of massive MIMO.

Abstract:The emergence of big data and the multidimensional nature of wireless communication signals present significant opportunities for exploiting the versatility of tensor decompositions in associated data analysis and signal processing. The uniqueness of tensor decompositions, unlike matrix-based methods, can be guaranteed under very mild and natural conditions. Harnessing the power of multilinear algebra through tensor analysis in wireless signal processing, channel modeling, and parametric channel estimation provides greater flexibility in the choice of constraints on data properties and permits extraction of more general latent data components than matrix-based methods. Tensor analysis has also found applications in Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) radar because of its ability to exploit the inherent higher-dimensional signal structures therein. In this paper, we provide a broad overview of tensor analysis in wireless communications and MIMO radar. More specifically, we cover topics including basic tensor operations, common tensor decompositions via canonical polyadic and Tucker factorization models, wireless communications applications ranging from blind symbol recovery to channel parameter estimation, and transmit beamspace design and target parameter estimation in MIMO radar.

Near-Pilotless MIMO Single Carrier Communications using Matrix Decomposition

Abstract:Multiple Input-Multiple Output (MIMO) is a key enabler of higher data rates in the next generation wireless communications. However in MIMO systems, channel estimation and equalization are challenging particularly in the presence of rapidly changing channels. The high pilot overhead required for channel estimation can reduce the system throughput for large antenna configuration. In this paper, we provide an iterative matrix decomposition algorithm for near-pilotless or blind decoding of MIMO signals, in a single carrier system with frequency domain equalization. This novel approach replaces the standard equalization and estimates both the transmitted data and the channel without the knowledge of any prior distributions, by making use of only one pilot. Our simulations demonstrate improved performance, in terms of error rates, compared to the more widely used pilot-based Maximal Ratio Combining (MRC) method.
