Abstract:Highly active and cost-effective oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalysts have become essential to replace commercial electrocatalysts that rely on rare noble metals. High-entropy sulfide nanomaterials, characterized by abundant randomly distributed elements and inherent stability, possess significant potential for applications. However, challenges such as uneven composition, partial oxidation, or imprecise synthesis control still remain in the materials preparation. Herein, a simple and effective two-step hydrothermal method was employed to synthesize NiCoFeCuS nanoparticles supported on foam nickel substrate. With the catalytic active sites produced by electron density redistribution in high-entropy and sulfurization, NiCoFeCuS exhibits excellent alkaline OER performance, with an overpotential of 261 mV and a Tafel slope of 57.97 mV dec(-1) at the current density of 10 mA cm(-2), which is only 88% of commercial RuO2 without any noble metals. CoNi Alloy Nanoparticles Encapsulated in N-Doped Graphite Carbon Nanotubes as an Efficient Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Reduction Reaction in an Alkaline Medium

Abstract:Transition metal alloys and their compounds have been drafted as relatively economic and high-activity non-noble metal electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, the stability of catalysts is regarded as a critical issue for practical application. Here, we report CoNi alloy nanoparticles embedded in a nitrogen-doped graphite carbon nanotube () electrocatalyst, which is synthesized from metal precursors and dicyandiamide nanofibers formed by freeze-drying pretreatment. The electrocatalyst exhibits remarkable ORR performance (a positive onset potential at 0.90 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), a half-wave potential at 0.84 V vs RHE, and a high limiting current density (6.4 mA cm–2)) in an alkaline medium. The outstanding ORR catalytic behavior is attributable to the properties with a high specific surface area and the collaborative influence between a CoNi alloy and a nanotube protective layer. The also displays antimethanol toxicity and good stability over 10,000 cycles, attributed to the unique structure of N-GCNT that is more conducive to mass transfer and protects the alloy particles from corrosion under harsh conditions. Abstract:Honeycomb-like N-doped hollow carbon hemispheres are synthesized by a facile and versatile process, using ionic liquids as the carbon source. Abstract:The development of cost-effective and highly efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts is an essential component of renewable clean energy technologies, such as fuel cells and metal/air cells, but remains a huge and long-term challenge. Here, novel heterogeneous Cu/CuO nanoparticles embedded within N-doped carbon nanosheets (Cu/CuO@NC-900) are successfully synthesized by combining a facile hydrothermal route with a solid calcination technique. Benefitting from the electronic interaction between Cu and CuO, the generated abundant highly active Cu-Nx active sites and the high conductivity of the N-doped carbon nanosheets, the resulting Cu/CuO@NC-900 material shows superior ORR performance in alkaline media, exhibiting a high half-wave potential of ~0.868 V, and a robust stability and methanol tolerance, even outperforming commercial 20 wt% Pt/C. Our study opens up a new avenue for the rational design and fabrication of efficient and durable noble-metal-free Cu-based electrocatalysts for energy conversion and storage.

Abstract:Alternative non-precious metal catalysts with comparable oxygen reduction reaction activity and durability to Pt-based catalysts are highly desirable for the development of fuel cell. Herein, we report a novel and efficient non-precious electrocatalyst N-CoTi@CoTiO3/C featuring an unusual composite oxide layer on the surface of CoTi alloy nanoparticles, which was investigated using probe-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy, electron energy-loss spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations. The N-CoTi@CoTiO3/C catalyst shows superior catalytic performance for oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) in alkaline solutions, with comparable onset potential, half-wave potential to commercial Pt/C and specific activity 1.5 times as high as commercial Pt/C at 0.70 V. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that the surface oxide layer polarization effect caused by the intermetallic CoTi core plays a key role in the high ORR activity of N-CoTi@CoTiO3/C. The enhancement of ORR activity and durability of catalyst by the surface polarization provides a versatile strategy for tuning the catalytic performance of non-noble electrocatalysts. Abstract:Herein, mesoporous Ni-doped Co3O4 nanowire (NW) arrays are reported as a highly efficient and low-cost catalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline electrolyte. The Ni doping affords more electroactive sites and enhanced conductivity, and the mesoporous structure provides increased surface exposure, which may improve ion/electron transport and reduce charge transfer resistance. The NW arrays exhibit a high ORR activity with a four-electron transfer reaction in alkaline media, a half-wave potential of 0.86 V vs. RHE and a superior stability when compared to the commercial Pt (20 wt%)/C catalyst. Our results suggest that the mesoporous Ni-doped Co3O4 NW arrays could be a promising ORR catalyst for fuel cells and metal–air batteries.

Abstract:A new efficient composite catalyst ((CuMnFeO)-Mn-I-O-III/NG) for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in both alkaline and neutral media, is successfully prepared via a facile, clean, low-cost and reproducible solvothermal method without any further treatments. The nanoparticles consisting of crystalline phases of Fe2O3, MnCO3 and amorphous Cu2O&MnxOy ((CuMnO)-Mn-I), are anchored on nitrogen-doping graphene (N/C atomic ratio up to 10.56%), which offer various active sites toward ORR. The synergistic catalytic effect between these components affords excellent ORR performance with comparable onset potential and current density to commercial Pt/C in both pH-situations, and a 4-electron-transfer path during oxygen reduction. Furthermore, comparative experiment results are discussed to describe the different degrees of ORR contribution in different medium from metal species and nitrogen doping. Meanwhile, superior methanol tolerance and high stability of (CuMnFeO)-Mn-I-O-III/NG can make it a promising alternative for expensive commercial Pt-based electrocatalysts in corresponding alkaline and neutral fuel cells.

Abstract:The research and development of high activity, low cost and high stability non-noble metal oxygen reduction electrocatalyst is very important to promote the commercial development of fuel cell. In this paper, cheap sucrose and urea is used as the raw materials to preparation a multi-pore nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheet coated ferro and cobalt binary metal nanoparticle composite (GNCN-FeCo) by simple pyrolysis. The GNCN-FeCo showed better oxygen reduction reaction(ORR)catalytic activity than commercial Pt/C in alkaline media, benefit from multi-pore structure and FeCo-Nx active center. GNCN-FeCo has the same onset potential as Pt/C and much better half-wave potential (positive about 70 mV compared to commercial Pt/C), and the reaction process is a 4-electron transfer process (n≈4); Moreover, its onest potential is quiet close to that of Pt/C catalyst in acidic medium, and its half-wave potential is only negative about 20 mV in comparison with Pt/C. Meanwhile, GNCN-FeCo displays excellent methanol resistance in 0.5 M H2SO4 and 0.1 M KOH. These results indicate that GNCN-FeCo may have the potential to replace the Pt/C catalyst as an efficient ORR catalyst.

Abstract:Alkaline oxygen electrocatalysis, targeting anion exchange membrane fuel cells, Zn‐air batteries, and alkaline‐based Li‐air batteries, has become a subject of intensive investigation because of its advantages compared to its acidic counterparts in reaction kinetics and materials stability. However, significant breakthroughs in the design and synthesis of efficient oxygen reduction catalysts from earth‐abundant elements instead of precious metals in alkaline media remain in high demand. Carbon composite materials have been recognized as the most promising because of their reasonable balance between catalytic activity, durability, and cost. In particular, heteroatom (e.g., N, S, B, or P) doping can tune the electronic and geometric properties of carbon, providing more active sites and enhancing the interaction between carbon structure and active sites. Importantly, involvement of transition metals appears to be necessary for achieving high catalytic activity and improved durability by catalyzing carbonization of nitrogen/carbon precursors to form highly graphitized carbon nanostructures with more favorable nitrogen doping. Recently, a synergetic effect was found between the active species in nanocarbon and the loaded oxides/sulfides, resulting in much improved activity. This report focuses on these carbon composite catalysts. Guidance for rational design and synthesis of advanced alkaline ORR catalysts with improved activity and performance durability is also presented.
Sulfate Ions Induced Concave Porous S‐N Co‐Doped Carbon Confined FeC x Nanoclusters with Fe‐N 4 Sites for Efficient Oxygen Reduction in Alkaline and Acid Media

Abstract:To improve the catalytic activity of the catalysts, it is key to intensifying the intrinsic activity of active sites or increasing the exposure of accessible active sites. In this work, an efficient oxygen reduction electrocatalyst is designed that confines plentiful FeCx nanoclusters with Fe-N4 sites in a concave porous S-N co-doped carbon matrix, readily accessible for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Sulfate ions react with the carbon derived from ZIF-8 at high temperatures, leading to the shrinkage of the carbon framework and then forming a concave structure with abundant macropores and mesopores with S incorporation. Such an architecture promotes the exposure of active sites and accelerates remote mass transfer. As a result, the catalyst (Fe/S-NC) with a large number of C-S-C, Fe-N4, and FeCx nanoclusters presents impressive ORR activity and stability. In alkaline media, the half-wave potential of the best catalyst (Fe/S2-NC) is 0.91 V, which far exceeds that of commercial platinum carbon (0.85 V), while in acidic media the half-wave potential reaches 0.784 V, comparable to platinum carbon (0.812 V). Furthermore, for the zinc-air battery, the outstanding peak power density of Fe/S2-NC (170 mW cm−2) superior to platinum carbon (108 mW cm−2) also highlights its great application potential.

Abstract:Dopamine, a sustainable and cheap raw material, was selected as the carbon and nitrogen sources to synthesize hollow nitrogen‐doped carbon microspheres (HNCMS). Abstract:Nitrogen-doped carbon spheres (NCS) are synthesized by directly pyrolyzing a nebulized solution of xylene and ethylenediamine via a spray pyrolysis method, without using a catalyst. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements confirm that the NCS only contain C, N and O. The electrocatalytic performances show that the NCS exhibit a high catalytic activity, long-term stability, and an excellent methanol tolerance for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in an alkaline medium. This study successfully develops a new non-precious metal catalyst, which exhibits an excellent electrocatalytic performance, using a simple, cost-effective and scalable method. It also provides an increased fundamental understanding in the origins of ORR activity enhancements using N-doped carbon materials.

Abstract:Although precious metal Pt-based cathodic nanomaterials are extensively considered as the excellent electrocatalysts for overcoming sluggish kinetics in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), their practical applications are severely impeded by high price, low earth abundance, and poor durability of Pt. Hence, it is highly desired to explore cheaper alternatives with comparable catalytic activity and durability for ORR. Herein, the high-efficiency Co-N-C catalyst, composed of CoOx and N-doped carbon, is successfully constructed by pyrolysis of bimetallic CoZn microspheres and polydopamine (PDA). The N-rich PDA could confer plentiful well-distributed Co-Nx, pyridinic N active sites, and abundant hierarchical pores to the catalyst during pyrolysis. The optimal NC/CoN-2 catalyst manifests an E1/2 of 0.818 V and a JL of 5.27 mA/cm2, as well as excellent MeOH tolerance, long-time durability, and the 4e- reaction pathway in alkaline media. Such a remarkable ORR performance of NC/CoN-2 is attributed to the simultaneous compositional (Co/N co-doping) and structural tailoring (micropore/ mesopore/macropore), enabled by PDA surface coating.

Abstract:Supportive atomic Zn electrocatalysts exhibit excellent stability for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) due to their fully occupied d orbitals of Zn, but their catalytic activity is not satisfactory. Whereas heteroatom doping can anchor the Zn atoms to achieve higher Zn loading; and additionally serve as auxiliary sites to enhance the catalytic activity of Zn sites. Herein, we present a method for the synthesis of N, S co-doped carbon with highly dispersed Zn (named Zn-NSC). The ORR activity of the Zn-NSC catalysts is optimized by adjusting the pyrolysis temperature and the atomic structure of the dopant molecules. The optimized Zn-NSC demonstrates significantly enhanced ORR electrocatalytic activity, this is attributable to its highly co-doping of N and S heteroatoms that are adjacent to Zn atoms. Specifically, the Zn-NSC 3 catalyst exhibits remarkable ORR characteristics with excellent onset voltage (0.97 V vs RHE) and half-wave potential (0.87 V vs RHE), surpassing those of Pt/C (0.97 V and 0.85 V, respectively). Additionally, the Zn-NSC 3 can be utilized as efficient cathode for Al-air batteries, achieving a high power density of 119.4 mW cm −2 and satisfactory discharge stability. This work proposes an approach for synthesizing low-cost and efficient ORR electrocatalysts for Al-air battery applications.

Abstract:In recent years, various platinum-free catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction ( ORR) have attracted great attention due to the limited natural abundance and high cost of platinum. Herein, Ag@N-C ( N-C: nitrogen-doped carbon) nanorods for the ORR were synthesized through chemical polymerization and pyrolysis methods by using pyrrole and silver nitrate as raw materials. Pyrolysis could significantly increase the specific surface area of as-synthesized catalysts and convert pyrrolic-N into graphitic-N and pyridinic-N. The results of electrochemical tests show that the Ag@N-C-900 catalyst ( pyrolyzed at 900 degrees C) exhibits highly efficient ORR catalytic activity, improved stability, and better methanol resistance in comparison to that of Pt/C catalyst in alkaline media.
