Abstract:We briefly review our recent work on a series of spatial gap solitons in two-dimensional optically induced photonic lattices,including fundamental gap solitons,dipole-like gap solitons,gap soliton trains,and gap vortex solitons.In some cases,spectrum reshaping and bifurcation of spatial solitons from the bottom of the 1st transmission band with anomalous diffraction to the forbidden gap is experimentally observed.The π-staggered phase structures of the gap solitons are confirmed with the interferograms.Our experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical predications.

Abstract:The existence and general properties of different kinds of defect vector gap solitons in one dimensional optically induced photonic defect lattice with focusing saturable nonlinearity in photorefractive crystal are analyzed. The defect is well localized in a single site with two existence forms, namely repulsive and attractive defect. Propagation constants of two beams that compose defect vector gap solitons could be from same gap or from different gaps. We show that some kinds of unstable scalar defect gap solitons could be stabilized by their corresponding vector cases.

Abstract:In this article, localized linear defect modes due to band gap guidance in two-dimensional photonic lattices with localized or nonlocalized defects are investigated theoretically. First, when the defect is localized and weak, eigenvalues of defect modes bifurcated from edges of Bloch bands are derived analytically. It is shown that in an attractive (repulsive) defect, defect modes bifurcate out from Bloch-band edges with normal (anomalous) diffraction coefficients. Furthermore, distances between defect-mode eigenvalues and Bloch-band edges decrease exponentially with the defect strength, which is very different from the one-dimensional case where such distances decrease quadratically with the defect strength. It is also found that some defect-mode branches bifurcate not from Bloch-band edges, but from quasiedge points within Bloch bands, which is very unusual. Second, when the defect is localized but strong, defect modes are determined numerically. It is shown that both the repulsive and attractive defects can support various types of defect modes such as fundamental, dipole, quadrupole, and vortex modes. These modes reside in various band gaps of the photonic lattice. As the defect strength increases, defect modes move from lower band gaps to higher ones when the defect is repulsive, but remain within each band gap when the defect is attractive, similar to the one-dimensional case. The same phenomena are observed when the defect is held fixed while the applied dc field (which controls the lattice potential) increases. Lastly, if the defect is nonlocalized (i.e., it persists at large distances in the lattice), it is shown that defect modes can be embedded inside the continuous spectrum, and they can bifurcate out from edges of the continuous spectrum algebraically rather than exponentially.

Abstract:We observe dipole-like gap solitons in two-dimensional waveguide lattices optically induced with a self-defocusing nonlinearity. Under appropriate conditions, two mutually coherent input beams excited in neighboring lattice sites evolve into a self-trapped state, whose spatial power spectrum and stability depend strongly on the initial excitation conditions. Our experimental observations are compared with numerical simulations.

Abstract:We demonstrate self-trapping and rotation of higher-band dipole and quadruple-like gap solitons by single-site excitation in a two-dimensional square photonic lattice under self-focusing nonlinearity. Experimental results show that the second-band dipole gap solitons reside in the first photonic (Bragg reflection) gap, whereas the quadruple-like gap solitons are formed in an even higher photonic gap, resulting from modes of the third-band. Moreover, both dipole and quadruple-like gap solitons exhibit dynamical rotation around the lattice principle axes and the direction of rotation is changing periodically during propagation, provided that they are excited under appropriate initial conditions. In the latter case, the nonlinear rotation is accompanied by periodic transitions between quadruple and doubly-charged vortex states. Our numerical simulations find good agreement with the experimental observations. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We demonstrate the existence of shape-preserving self-localized nonlinear modes in a two-dimensional photonic lattice with a flat-topped defect that covers several lattice sites. The balance of diffraction, defocusing nonlinearity, and optical potential induced by lattices with various forms of defects results in novel families of solitons featuring salient properties. We show that the soliton shape can be controlled by varying the shape of lattice defects. The existence domains of fundamental and vortex solitons in the semi-infinite gap expand with the defect amplitude. Vortex solitons in the semi-infinite gap with rectangular intensity distributions will break into dipole solitons when the propagation constant exceeds a critical value. In the semi-infinite and first-finite gaps, we find that lattices with rectangular defects can support stable vortex solitons which exhibit noncanonical phase structure.

Abstract:The formation of defect modes in optically induced photonic lattices with one_and two_dimensional defects are analyzed by combining the diffraction relationship of uniform lattices and the Brillouin zone spectra. The defect modes associated with different high symmetry points in Brillouin zone are obtained, including the positive and negative defect modes bifurcating from the X1 point, which is “embedded” in the photonic bandgap. It is revealed that, for two_dimensional defects, the positive （negative） defect modes exist only in the regions corresponding to normal （anomalous） diffraction along both principal axes in k-space, whereas for one_dimensional defects, the positive （negative） defect modes can exist in the regions corresponding to normal （anomalous） diffraction along a single direction. The positive defect mode at X1 point predicates the existence of in-band solitons under self-focusing nonlinearity. The conclusions obtained above could be helpful to understanding the formation of lattice solitons （especially in_band solitons） in photonic lattices.

Abstract:We report on the experimental observation of higher-band gap solitons in a one-dimensional photonic lattice possessing a defocusing saturable nonlinearity. Pure Floquet-Bloch modes of the first three bands are excited using a prism-coupler setup, and spatial gap solitons of different width are formed, the latter property being related to the increasing anomalous diffraction in the three bands and the fixed value of the nonlinearity in our lithium niobate sample. Abstract:We report the existence and stability of surface defect gap solitons in one-dimensional semi-infinite dual-frequency lattices and semi-infinite simple lattices with a defect between them in the saturable nonlinear medium. By changing the defect intensity, defect solitons can exist in different gaps. For a positive defect, solitons only exist in the semi-infinite gap and can be stable in the low power region. With an increase of the negative defect depth, defect solitons will exist in the semi-infinite gap, first gap, and the second gap.

Abstract:We introduce the conception of flat-bottom dark gap modes in one-dimensional periodic nanostructures configured as periodic alternations (nanoscale stripes) of the local linear and nonlinear properties, resembling the Kronig-Penney model with combined nanoscopic linear-nonlinear lattices. We argue that, the flat-bottom gap modes, representing a new type of localized dark state in forbidden bandgap, can be implemented in BoseEinstein condensates and optics with periodic potentials like optical lattices and photonic crystals at nanoscale, with the existing experimental technologies. In addition, the fundamental localized dark gap modes and their higher-order ones, dark gap solitons and soliton clusters, are also predicted. Dynamics and stability of all the localized gap modes are scrutinized in two ways, linear-stability analysis and direct perturbed simulations. Our results open a new route to studying soliton physics in the context of periodic nanostructures where new localized states like flat-bottom dark gap solitons may exist.

Abstract:The existence, stability and propagation properties of defect solitons in two-dimensional optical lattices with a line defect are investigated analytically and numerically. When line defects with various defect intensities are introduced into two-dimensional optical lattices, defect solitons can exist in different bandgaps. Some unique characteristics show that the line defect embedded into two-dimensional optical lattices can profoundly influence the shape, stability and propagation of solitons. For a positive defect, the solitons only exist in the semi-infinite gap and cannot be stable in the high power region. For a negative defect, the solitons can exist not only in the semi-infinite gap, but also in the first gap;the solitons are stable in the moderate power region in the first gap.

Abstract:We fabricated two-dimensional square photonic lattices with a backbone structure in self-defocusing LiNbO3:Fe crystals through optical induction. We systematically observed four kinds of gap solitons and their power spectra in the nonlinear photonic lattices. Our results show that the lightwave is confined more tightly when it is launched into a low-index region at the input face of the crystal than when it is launched into a backbone ridge waveguide.

Abstract:Optical lattices and Feshbach resonance management are two mighty and widely used techniques for studying, both experimentally and theoretically, various physical issues and the underlying nonlinear dynamics of Bose−Einstein condensates. Both techniques show great power for studying solitons of different types, and particularly, the former technique realizes the creation of 1D bright matter‐wave gap solitons, whose formation and properties in multidimensional systems, however, are much less known. Herein, both techniques and study are combined, theoretically and numerically, the formation and dynamics of 3D nonlinear localized gap modes, including fundamental gap solitons and their higher‐order ones as soliton clusters, as well as gap vortices with topological charge s = 1. The stability regions of all the localized gap modes are identified by means of direct perturbed numerical simulations, revealing important insights into soliton physics in multidimensional space.

Abstract:In the present work, we consider the dynamics of dark solitons as one mode of a defocusing photorefractive lattice coupled with bright solitons as a second mode of the lattice. Our investigation is motivated by an experiment that illustrates that such coupled states can exist with both components in the first gap of the linear band spectrum. This finding is further extended by the examination of different possibilities from a theoretical perspective, such as symbiotic ones where the bright component is supported by states of the dark component in the first or second gap, or nonsymbiotic ones where the bright soliton is also a first-gap state coupled to a first or second gap state of the dark component. While the obtained states are generally unstable, these instabilities typically bear fairly small growth rates, which enable their observation for experimentally relevant propagation distances.

Abstract:Past decades have witnessed the emergence and increasing expansion of parity-time ( <math><mrow><mi>P</mi> <mi>T</mi></mrow> </math> )-symmetric systems in diverse physical fields and beyond as they manifest entirely all-real spectra, although being non-Hermitian. Nonlinear waves in low-dimensional <math><mrow><mi>P</mi> <mi>T</mi></mrow> </math> -symmetric non-Hermitian systems have recently been explored broadly; however, understanding these systems in higher dimensions remains abstruse and has yet to be revealed. We survey, theoretically and numerically, matter-wave nonlinear gap modes of Bose-Einstein condensates with repulsive interparticle interactions in three-dimensional <math><mrow><mi>P</mi> <mi>T</mi></mrow> </math> optical lattices with emphasis on multidimensional gap solitons and vortices. Utilizing direct perturbed simulations, we address the stability and instability areas of both localized modes in the underlying linear band gap spectra. Our study provides deep and consistent understandings of the formation, structural property, and dynamics of coherent localized matter waves supported by <math><mrow><mi>P</mi> <mi>T</mi></mrow> </math> optical lattices in multidimensional space, thus opening a way for exploring and stabilizing three-dimensional localized gap modes in non-Hermitian systems.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate linear bandgap guidance of optical vortices as high-gap defect modes (DMs) in two-dimensional induced photonic lattices. We show that donut-shaped vortex beams can be guided in a tunable negative (lower-index) defect, provided that the defect strength is set at an appropriate level. Such vortex DMs have fine features in the "tails" associated with the lattice anisotropy and can be considered as a superposition of dipole DMs. Our numerical results find good agreement with experimental observations.

Abstract:We demonstrate two-dimensional gap solitons/soliton-trains by single-beam on-axis excitation in a self-defocusing Â¿backboneÂ¿ photonic lattice. Interferograms and k-space spectra indicate staggered structure of the gap solitons arising from M-symmetry points of the first Bloch band.

Abstract:We reveal theoretically that defect superlattice solitons (DSSs) exist at the defect site in one-dimensional optical superlattices with focusing saturable nonlinearity. Solitons with some unique properties exist in superlattices with defects. For a positive defect, solitons exist at the semi-infinite gap, and solitons are stable at low power but unstable at high power. For a negative defect, most solitons exist in the first finite gap and can propagate stably. In particular, it is found that the solitons can be divided into two equal parts upon propagation in a certain regime of parameters.
