Abstract:A quantitative model brings together theories linking international trade to quality, technology, and demand for skills. Standard effects of trade on importers and exporters are magnified through domestic input linkages. We estimate the model with data from Colombian manufacturing firms before the 1991 trade liberalization. A counterfactual trade liberalization is broadly consistent with post-liberalization data. It increases skill intensity from 12 to 16 percent, while decreasing sales. Imported inputs, estimated to be of higher quality, and domestic input linkages are quantitatively important. Economies of scale, export expansion, and reallocation of production are small and cannot explain post-liberalization data. (JEL F14, F16, J24, L60, O14, O19, O33)
The puzzle of quality upgrading of Chinese exports from the trade liberalization perspective

Abstract:Trade liberalization could accelerate the process of quality upgrading through the competition effect. However, that the quality of Chinese exports exhibits an opposite performance pattern is puzzling. The present paper uses a framework based on multiproduct firms to analyse the mechanism of how the product quality of exports is affected by trade liberalization to explain this puzzle. The model includes two major mechanisms: the competition effect and the market effect. There is a huge gap in the influence on the product quality of exports between a decrease in tariff barriers and non-tariff barriers: firms' product quality increases (decreases) when non-tariff barriers (tariff barriers) fall. The data of Chinese firms from 2001 to 2011 supports this conclusion. Further research reveals that the influence of trade liberalization on the product quality of exports in China varies among different types of firms.

Abstract:We extend the theoretical model of Antoniades (2015, Heterogeneous Firms, quality, and trade. Journal of International Economics, 95(2), 263-273) to analyze the impact of export demand shocks on the quality of multi-product firms. Using Chinese micro-data, we find that positive export demand shocks significantly promote the export quality of multi-product firms, but the impact decreases as firm productivity increases. In addition to the scale effect and the competition effect, the intensified competition caused by the expansion of export demand will induce firms to skew their export sales towards the best performing products. Our findings elucidate the importance of the resource reallocation effect in the study of trade-induced export performance.

Abstract:This study analyzes the effect of domestic and foreign intellectual property rights (IPR) protection on quality upgrading. We build a tractable model of heterogeneous firms, endogenous innovation scale, and endogenous quality choice. The model shows that IPR protection affects firms’ export quality through two opposing channels: the innovation and threshold effects, which promote and inhibit quality upgrading, respectively. We examine the overall effect of these channels using firm-level data from China across 2000–2007. We find that: (ⅰ) both domestic and foreign IPR protection positively affect export quality upgrading, so innovation effect is dominant; (ⅱ) the impact of domestic IPR protection is greater than that of foreign IPR protection; and (iii) various methods, such as generalized method of moments and difference in differences, are used to test the conclusions of this study, indicating robust results.

Abstract:Abstract This paper studies quality upgrading to escape competition from low-wage countries and proposes a new channel that does not rely on access to new inputs or markets. Informed by Peruvian apparel firms' response to China's WTO accession, I introduce factor specificity in a multi-product-firm model. Profitability losses due to competition in low-quality segments induce Firms to reallocate specific factors to produce high-quality varieties for high-income countries. Gains from this channel are large. Using an observed quality measure, I show that import competition substantially increases domestic firms' exports and high-quality export shares. Firms also reduce prices, resulting in additional welfare gains.

Abstract:Gary Becker's theory of discrimination argues that increasing competition will reduce discrimination by reallocating market share to less discriminatory firms. We develop a simple model in which increased competition can also affect discrimination by affecting firm‐level hiring decisions. We use the 1984–1991 Colombian trade liberalization episode and plant‐level data to investigate this claim. We find that plants in industries that faced the greatest reductions in tariff protection increased the female share of their workforce more than plants in industries that saw little or no reduction in tariffs. In addition, we find that exporting plants tended to employ a higher share of female workers than non‐exporters did. In contrast, we find little evidence that trade liberalization drove discriminating plants from the market.

Abstract:As tariffs have declined to a low level, the trade literature has paid increasing attention to the impact of non-tariff measures. Unlike tariffs, non-tariff measures could act as both a barrier to trade and a catalyst for quality upgrading. This study examines the effect of technical barriers to trade (TBTs) on trade margins and quality upgrading at the firm level. To do so, we utilise rich Chinese Customs data recording the universe of export transactions from 2000 to 2012, matched with the Annual Survey of Industrial Firms and the World Trade Organization’s Specific Trade Concerns database. We find that TBTs imposition results in higher probability of exit. Surviving exporters enjoy larger sales and charge higher export prices. We also find robust evidence for the quality upgrading effects of TBTs. Firms upgrade their product quality by expanding their research and development and importing more intermediate inputs and capital goods. The positive impact of TBTs on quality upgrading offsets that on price increases, resulting in lower quality-adjusted export prices. This suggests the net welfare-enhancing effect of TBTs for the consumers of imported products. The results hold after controlling for potential endogeneity and across various specifications.

Abstract:This article examines the impact of trade liberalization on export prices and quality. The article is innovative in two respects. First, unlike previous studies, it considers both input and output tariffs simultaneously in a theoretical model. Second, it empirically tests the effects of a combination of specific and ad‐valorem tariffs on quality improvement. The theoretical analysis suggests that when firms face reduced output and input tariffs, they tend to improve their export quality and increase export prices. Using export data from 33 OECD countries, the empirical analysis demonstrates that output tariff reduction increases export quality but decreases prices. However, the effects of input tariff reduction on price and quality depend on product differentiation. The results also indicate that the presence of specific tariffs increase product quality while amplifying the positive effects of the reduction of ad‐valorem tariffs on quality. This implies that to improve export quality, reducing ad‐valorem tariffs is more efficient than a specific tariff. [EconLit Citations: F12, F14, Q17].

Abstract:This paper investigates the effect of antidumping on multi-product firms’ adjustment in export quality using highly disaggregated Chinese exports data at the firm-product-country level for the period 2000–2014. In response to antidumping, firms tend to upgrade the quality of their exports for targeted products in affected markets by product adjustment, with this effect being more pronounced for firms with ex ante higher product quality. Antidumping induces resource reallocation across firms for a product such that higher-quality firms upgrade the quality while lower-quality firms are unaffected, and reallocation across products within a firm with the quality of products of higher competency increasing more substantially under antidumping policy. Our paper contributes to our understanding on how a multi-product firm adjusts by reallocating resources across products in the face of trade policy shocks.

Abstract:This paper presents a theoretical and empirical analysis of the effects of market competition and market expansion on firms' product line decisions. The theoretical model explicitly incorporates cost of management and firm heterogeneity in terms of managerial efficiency. Both the theoretical and empirical analyses show that the home country's final-goods tariff cut (which captures market competition) reduces all home firms' export product lines, while in response to a foreign country's tariff cut (which represents market expansion), those firms with high (low) managerial efficiency expand (reduce) their export product lines. Our empirical analysis is based on data on Chinese firms from 2000 to 2006. The findings are robust to many specifications of the empirical model.
Quality of Imported Intermediates, Innovation Behaviour and Markups: Firm‐level Evidence from China

Abstract:This paper examines whether higher quality imported intermediates can increase firms' markups. Based on the conceptual model, we first find that improving the quality of imported intermediates affects firms' decision-making in terms of innovation and firm-level markups through the price channel and the cost channel. We combine the annual survey data of Chinese industrial firms (ASIF), Chinese customs transactions and patent data to verify the theoretical propositions. The results report that: (1) there is a significantly positive correlation between the quality of imported intermediates and firms' markups; (2) innovation acts as a potential channel through which the quality of imported intermediates increases firms' markups; (3) by decomposing markups into the price channel and the cost channel, we find that the quality of imported intermediates affects firms' markups through the cost channel. Our results suggest that higher quality imported intermediates may improve firms' market power through innovation.
Do Export Tax Rebates Promote Firm Upgrading? Evidences from Labor-Intensive Firms in China

Abstract:With increasing the low-cost competition in international market, firm upgrading especially for Chinese labor-intensive firms is vital to strengthening their export competitiveness. Using a panel data of Chinese labor-intensive firms for 2001–2013, this paper explores whether export tax rebates (ETR) promote firm upgrading measured by technological sophistication and product quality. Results show that a positively significant effect of ETR on firm upgrading. An increase in ETR rates by 10 % upgrades technological sophistication by 2.3 % and product quality by 2.1 %. Moreover, there exists an inverse-U shaped relationship between the rebate rate and firm upgrading, and the turning point occurs when the rate is at 0.15 for technological sophistication and at 0.13 for product quality. Further mechanism analysis reveals that the internal knowledge creation and international knowledge transfer are two parallel pathways linking ETR and firm upgrading. The effect of ETR on technological sophistication is carried mainly by internal knowledge creation, while international knowledge transfer is more important for upgrading product quality. However, the ETR effects vary across firms with different characters.
Import Intermediates Quality, Innovation and Firms' Export DVAR

Abstract:China's economy has turned to the stage of high quality development, and foreign trade should also turn from "massive imports and massive exports" to "quality imports and quality exports". Under the framework of the extended Kee and Tang (2016) model, this paper analyzes the static and dynamic effects of import intermediate quality on the firms' export domestic value added ratio (DVAR). Under the static condition, the quality of import intermediate is negatively related to the firms' export DVAR, and it dynamically improves the firms' export DVAR through independent innovation, resulting in "markup effects" and "relative price effects". On this basis, this paper empirically tests the theoretical propositions through ASIF, customs data and the patent data.The results show that: (1) under static condition, the quality of import intermediate and export DVAR are significantly negative correlated, the full sample dynamic effect is negative, while subsample of ordinary trade is not significant; (2) the innovation behavior has a moderating effect on ordinary trade, the dynamic effects are significantly positive when the level of innovation is sufficiently enough; (3) check on the channel of innovation effects on the export firms finds that intermediary variables are markups and the relative price; (4) further analysis shows that higher RCA, lower technology gap and better provincial market index have obviously positive effects on innovation activities. The above conclusions prove that the promotion of import policy from export to innovation oriented is an effective way to build a stronger trade power under the higher position of global value chain.

Abstract:We study the procompetitive gains from international trade in a quantitative model with endogenously variable markups. We find that trade can significantly reduce markup distortions if two conditions are satisfied: (i) there is extensive misallocation, and (ii) opening to trade exposes hitherto dominant producers to greater competitive pressure. We measure the extent to which these two conditions are satisfied in Taiwanese producer-level data. Versions of our model consistent with the Taiwanese data predict that opening up to trade strongly increases competition and reduces markup distortions by up to one-half, thus significantly reducing productivity losses due to misallocation. Abstract:Firms increasingly have to contend with trade regulations to access foreign markets. We quantify their relative importance and the heterogeneous effects for Colombians firms exporting to Latin America between 2007 and 2017, focusing on specific types and channels. Using panel evidence from a firm‐level gravity model with a difference‐in‐differences identification strategy, technical barriers to trade (TBTs) and quantity control measures both decrease trade on average. Other non‐tariff measures and tariffs play a minor role. At its core, TBT and quantity measures reallocate trade from small to big firms. The same mechanism benefits firms participating in global value chains. However, quantity controls make it more likely that big firm will leave export markets to the benefit of smaller ones. Our results control for the endogeneity of trade regulations and are robust to the use of different samples and measures of firm size.

Processing Trade, Tariff Reductions, and Firm Productivity Evidence from Chinese Firms

Abstract:This paper explores how processing trade, jointly with tariff reduction, can improve a firm's productivity. Tariff reductions generate productivity gain via competition, whereas processing export does so via spillovers. Using mostly disaggregated Chinese product-level trade data and firm-level production data from 2000--2006, after constructing firm-level tariffs based on product information and controlling for possible endogeneity, I found that a 10% tariff decrease generates a 12% increase in a firm's productivity gain. In addition, processing firms enjoy significant productivity gains via spillovers, with heterogeneity across firms divided according to ownership. These findings are robust to various econometric methods, disaggregated specifications, and measures.

Abstract:An increase in trade policy uncertainty raises policymakers' concerns, as it can be harmful to investments and growth globally. This study examines the impact of reducing trade policy uncertainty on export product quality. Based on the ASEAN–China Free Trade Area (ACFTA), the difference-in-difference, two-way fixed, and triple difference methods were used to conduct benchmark tests. The results show that reducing trade policy uncertainty improves export product quality. Social capital has strengthened the role of the changing trade environments. The results were robust after the PSM-DID, placebo test, and deletion of outliers. Furthermore, the role of social capital is incorporated into the regression model. From the perspective of informal internal systems, this study expands the theoretical view of regional trade integration research and answers the current trade strategy adjustment and export transformation policy concerns.

Abstract:This paper examines the effect of an industrial policy in China named the VAT export tax on product upgrading. In particular, we use Chinese transaction data during 2003–2010 to isolate the causal impact of the exogenous variation of VAT refund and within the city‐product quality change in HS6 exported products. Our identification strategy entails the utilization of duality of the Chinese trade system to isolate the impact of the rebate by comparing a group of trade flows exempt from the refund and another that remains eligible. Our results suggest an increase in product upgrading in response to an increase in VAT refund. In this study, we also introduce the credit constraint to understand the change in quality. The industries that are confronted with tighter credit constraints impel firms to settle for low‐quality products. The model demonstrates that VAT refund provided a counterbalance force to credit constraints, thereby prompting firms to adjust quality. By increasing the refund granted to ordinary traders, firms leverage this excess cash flow to invest (in a fixed asset or innovative project) and improve the quality of products. This effect is reinforced for products exported to developed countries, heterogeneous products, or from larger industries. The Chinese policymakers formally introduced environmental objectives under the 10th and 11th FYP, respectively. The Party leaders put substantial weight on promoting products embedded with high‐added value or technological content. At the same time, they underscored the willingness to downscale the export share of energy‐intensive or polluting industries. We evaluate whether environmental and economic concern impacts product upgrading. According to the results of this study, the VAT refund is effective only for products produced in "cleaner" industries, for products necessitating technical skills, a range of know‐how in manufacturing, and high‐level technology or engaging in research and development activities. Our paper introduces a new and unexplored variable in the trade literature. We use the stock of non‐trade barriers to explicate the change in product quality. In the import market, Chinese exporters comply with the change in regulation by making upward adjustments in the quality.

Abstract:We study how the contracting environment affects the quality of trade. A better contracting environment not only induces specialisations in industries intensively using customised inputs, but also causes quality upgrading of domestic varieties and tougher competition in these industries. We incorporate these effects into a Ricardian model with customised input and product quality. Our model predicts that better judicial quality raises a country's import prices and quality more in contract-intensive products, but has no impacts on its export prices or quality. We empirically confirm these predictions and find that rising judicial quality is associated with increasing specialisations in contract-intensive industries.

Abstract:Most studies focus on the empirical investigation of the relationship between environment and trade, but they lack a systematic theoretical framework. To fill this gap, this study constructs an analytical framework of export competitiveness from the perspective of product quality, and reveals the theoretical mechanism of environmental regulation affecting export quality. We empirically examine the impact of environmental regulation on the export quality of China’s manufacturing industry, as well as its possible mechanism. Our findings show that environmental regulation can significantly promote the export quality upgrading of the manufacturing industry and that process and product productivity are two possible channels through which such regulation affects export quality, although their mediating effects are in opposite directions. The mediating effect of product productivity is greater than that of process productivity, indicating that environmental regulation mainly has an innovation offset effect on China’s manufacturing industry. For pollution-intensive industries, environmental regulation plays a significant promoting role through the channel of product productivity, but, for clean industries, environmental regulation has an inhibitory effect through the channel of process productivity. These findings provide important enlightenment for the coordinated development of China’s ecological civilization and trade power.
