Abstract:This article, based on my experience of teaching a graduate seminar in public history at Chongqing University, explores the possibilities of public history in China. It discusses how a reflective and collaborative curriculum works, and its implication for establishing Public History programs in the Chinese context. The article also argues that, despite a myriad of challenges, public history pushes the methodological boundary of urban preservation in China.

Abstract:From July 18 to July 30, 2014, sixteen participants from faculties around China gathered in Shanghai for the First Public History Faculty Training Program funded by the Center for Public History at Shanghai Normal University. The key objective was to introduce participants to public history, conceptually, practically, and pedagogically. For the second part of the program, a group from Princeton University joined the Chinese scholars for a cross-cultural exploration of how public history is interpreted differently in two cultures.

Abstract:This article starts out from looking at what is missing from environmental history in China today, and then goes on to ask a particular set of questions: How does one interpret environmental history with the public? How does one present environmental history in public space? How does one engage with an environmentally conscious public? And ultimately, is it possible to establish public environmental history as a new mode of knowledge? In answer to these questions, it focuses on relationships, including the relationships between nature and culture, the environment and people, and history and memory. Using the dredging history of West Lake in Hangzhou as an illustrative case, it explores nature as material culture, calls attention to the rhetorical power of nature, and argues that environmental history should be interpreted and presented as public memory.

Abstract:Educational approaches that enable students to actively and directly participate in “real-world” projects are increasingly recognized as valuable pedagogical tools and, as such, being incorporated into university curriculums worldwide. Though not traditionally associated with political science courses, project-based international service learning presents a tremendous opportunity to bring classroom concepts and theories to life, provide an active approach to addressing international challenges, and assist students in the development of the hands-on, problem-solving, team-based, critical-thinking skills that are increasingly important to employers across all sectors. This article seeks to encourage political science faculty to incorporate international service learning—and/or project-based approaches—into their educational offerings. Through examination of the course Global Synthesis in Liberal Arts and Engineering Studies at California Polytechnic State University, we have identified multiple factors that can help promote successful execution of project-based international service learning as a pedagogical tool, and provide additional suggestions for faculty interested in adopting specific aspects of these educational approaches, and/or in doing so closer to home.

Abstract:Public education is not just a way to organise and fund education. It is also the expression of a particular ideal about education and of a particular way to conceive of the relationship between education and society. The ideal of public education sees education as an important dimension of the common good and as an important institution in securing the common good. The common good is never what individuals or particular groups want or desire, but always reaches beyond such particular desires towards that which societies as a whole should consider as desirable. This does, of course, put the common good in tension with the desires of individuals and groups. Neo-liberal modes of governance have, over the past decades, put this particular educational set up under pressure and have, according to some, eroded the very idea of the common good. This set of contributions reflects on this state of affairs, partly through an exploration of the idea of publicness itself – how it can be rearticulated and regained – and partly through reflections on the current state of education in the 'north' and the 'south.'

Abstract:Public history refers to historical representation and transmission made by the public when they reflect upon their own historical consciousness and historical understanding.With the increasing growth of public desire for historical knowledge,professional historians now have two alternatives:one is to consciously reflect and analyze the development of their own historical knowing and historical consciousness,taking advantage of their merits and avoiding their weakness so as to become the participant or guide of public history;the other is to retain their role of "insiders" and keep on writing histories only for professional historians,waiting for the self-improvement of the public or the "outsiders" in terms of historical writing in the context of the new modes of information transmission and then letting these amateurs replace the professional historians.It is high time that we constructed public history discipline with the organizational system of academic discipline and with professional insight.With the spread of We-media,the double-edged functions of history may change within short period of time.Therefore,we need to think strategically of public participance in the production and transmission of historical knowledge,trying to offer a controllable,open and healthy environment for it.

Abstract:This paper discusses both challenges and opportunities for using inquiry-based learning in public administration postgraduate education in a context of internationalisation. In particular, we discuss the appropriateness of inquiry-based learning for teaching diverse groups of students from varied international backgrounds. Inquiry-based learning has been widely promoted in the United Kingdom higher education sector and seems intuitively appealing as a pedagogical approach for an applied subject such as public administration. However, there are challenges associated with using inquiry-based learning with postgraduate international students who have a short time to assimilate complex theories and concepts in a second language, and have often been educated previously in contexts with a more didactic tradition of education. With the increasing internationalisation of the United Kingdom higher education sector, we suggest there is tension between some of the teaching and learning methods that are being promoted nationally and the needs of an increasingly diverse international student body. Reflecting on our own experiences as teachers of international students on public administration programmes, we outline both the benefits and limitations of teaching with inquiry-based learning but also suggest ways in which this type of approach could be assimilated within the broader set of pedagogical practices used with international postgraduate students.

Abstract:Higher education in the U.S. sees global learning as critical to student development. Over the last seventy years, study abroad has emerged as the method of choice for teaching global knowledge and intercultural competence. In this context, community-based global learning programs are a type of program where students live in communities to learn directly from people and place. Looking at a field studies program in Northern Thailand, this paper explores the educational mobility of study abroad and impact on host communities. It shares findings on the experiences of two communities who have hosted study abroad students for almost twenty years. Best practices and recommendations for faculty and institutions running community-based global learning programs are shared, including the centrality of community voice in curriculum, benefits of applying a range of pedagogical methods on course, the critical nature of adequately preparing students for cultural immersion, and compensating communities justly for their work.

Recognizing the limitations of traditional classroom-based approaches, this research explores innovative techniques that immerse students in historical contexts, fostering deeper engagement and understanding. By incorporating hands-on experiences such as archival research, site visits, and reenactments, educators can create dynamic learning environments that stimulate critical thinking and empathy. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of these methods in enhancing historical literacy and cultivating a lifelong appreciation for the past among students. Through a combination of qualitative and quantitative analyses, it seeks to provide insights into best practices for revitalizing history education in the 21st century.

Abstract:Young learners often are enchanted with the world, fascinated by the ordinary, and absorbed in the present moment. We explore interconnected ideas about how young children’s natural proclivity toward being curious, and noticing differences among people should be harnessed toward socially just ends. We consider ways in which joyfulness in learning are preserved, as teachers partner with young learners to cultivate their sense of justice in the classroom and beyond. We use disability studies in education as a theoretical framework for doing anti-bias work within early childhood education. We also describe global and neoliberal trends which directly and negatively impact the lives of young children by escalating injustice through educational practices and policies often disguised as reform. Ultimately, we propose, reimagining equity-based practices, positive disability narratives, freedom and humanity, and the concept of place within pedagogy to transform early childhood education.

Rethinking History

Abstract:Histories of events can be told from multiple perspectives, and there is rarely just one linear narrative or a single interpretation of the past. This paper takes an interdisciplinary approach to explain how the concept of shared authority in public history can be applied to transmedia storytelling, in the context of media studies, to address conflicting narratives on historical events. Transmedia narratives allow for more opportunities to target different audiences and offer alternatives, and perhaps conflicting interpretations, to official mainstream interpretations of historical events. This is achieved through three primary methods of public participation in the development of conflicting narratives which can be presented through a variety of different media. The theoretical challenges in sharing authority of transmedia narrative creation with different publics ranges from strong to little control (i.e. radical trust). Thus, we discuss a series of methodologies that can be strategically used in future research projects that wish to share authority with different publics in the development of historical transmedia narratives with conflicting interpretations. This approach can be particularly relevant in contexts of segregation, discrimination, identity, political changes or cultural wars.

Abstract:We live in a global society. Our countries may maintain their own borders and bureaucratic structures, but the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and the problems that arouse out of it have highlighted the intermingled relationship we have with all parts of the globe (McDonald et al., 2022 ). The interconnectedness of the globe can even be seen from our own experience as co-editors-in-chief of the Journal of Public Affairs Education . In the early days of the pandemic, printing of the journal was temporarily halted as our publisher had challenges getting access to paper from its distributor in one country, trouble shipping the paper to its printer in another, and finally delivering the hardcopies to the United States. Although this example focuses on JPAE, we are not alone. What happens in one country impacts and effects those around it. But what does this mean for public affairs education? From our standpoint, we believe that it means we should be preparing our students to engage in an international arena.

Abstract:This essay explores transnational history education through the China–Korea–Japan CAMPUS Asia ENGAGE Program. Utilising active learning, project-based activities and joint history textbook creation, students navigate East Asia’s contested past. The approach encourages a shift from national to transnational identities, fostering a ‘global citizen’ perspective. By deconstructing conventional history narratives and constructing alternative, intersectional viewpoints, students develop a nuanced understanding that transcends divisive national boundaries. This pedagogical strategy underscores the potential of active learning in advocating global history perspectives for conflict resolution and reshaping historical memory.

Abstract:Ruyu HungNational Chiayi University, TaiwanThis is a collective writing experiment of PESA members, orchestrating the Philosophy of Education in a New Key regarding East Asia. In 2016 the pioneering article 'Towards a philosophy of academic publishing' (Peters et al., 2016) was published. It sheds a new light on collective writing that can make great contribution to the academia by creating 'new knowledge ecologies and the global ecosystem of scholarly communication'. By the experiment of collective writing, novel and interesting works are produced, including: 'Antipodean Theory for Educational Research' (Stewart et al., 2017), 'Ten theses on the shift from (Static) Text to (Moving) Image' (Peters et al., 2018a), 'Is Peer Review in Academic Publishing still working?' (Jackson et al., 2018), and 'Experimenting with academic subjectivity: collective writing, peer production and collective intelligence' (Peters et al., 2019). In the year of 2020, the project of the collective writing on the theme 'Philosophy of education in a new key' (Peters, 2020) was launched to explore possibilities of thinking philosophy of education through collective efforts and intelligence. Its leading tone 'Harmonic Cadence' (Peters, 2020) means that the new field for philosophy of education in the times of the post-truth world (Peters et al., 2018b) is open for more participation and partaking. 'The Philosophy of Education in a New Key: East Asia', the collectively written piece by East Asian scholars, aims to answer to the call of the 'Harmonic Cadence' by introducing East Asian sagacity.

Abstract:Journal of Studies in International Education, Volume 26, Issue 2, Page 279-296, May 2022. This paper examines digital inclusion and equity in international higher education with particular focus on Global South-North Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL). Practice examples, bringing together students and academics in Brazil, South Africa, and the UK, are used to consider how COIL is being integrated into higher education curricula to interrupt western hegemony and open up spaces in which "otherwise" ways of knowing, being, relating and expressing can thrive. We consider COIL as a Third Space within which academics can help facilitate the different intellectual, emotional, and socio-cultural positionings of Global South-North students and reflect on how meaning-making and engagement can be transformed as a result of this dialogue. We also recognize how the digital environment as a Third Space can be experienced as inaccessible and troublesome and make suggestions on how South-North digitalization practices can be designed to address access and inclusion needs of students and academics.

Abstract:This article investigates the global promotion of China's model in the area of education. An examination of China's internationalisation policy shows that there have been shifts in priorities in the last three decades. In accordance with China's wider socio-economic context, the focus of internationalisation of education was revised from awareness of internationalisation in the 1980s, improvement of the quality of education and the desire to be world class in the 1990s to the adoption of a high profile 'going global' strategy in the new millennium. This article focuses on the recent changes in internationalisation strategies to investigate the use of cultural power and promotion of the Chinese model globally. Two cases, including Confucius Institutions and educational aid to Africa, are analysed to map out the process of expanding China's international influence through education. Nevertheless, the Chinese model is a nebulous concept. This article concludes by discussing whether and how Chinese practices are different from the Western model in the process of internationalisation of education.

Abstract:Critical cultural awareness is an essential component of critical thinking, and is increasingly necessary in order to build effective relationships in today’s globalised world. This chapter reports on a project carried out with a group of international and local journalism students, involving rewriting and refocusing local news stories from the students’ home countries for an international readership. This task brought students face to face with the need to communicate about familiar subjects to readers who would share little background knowledge. They had to construct a working theory of what the “international reader” would be likely to understand, and develop strategies to achieve comprehension. This also involved refocusing the story, highlighting different aspects of it for a new readership. The project generated considerable interest among the students, and sparked discussion of cultural topics and topoi that provided material for further research and reflection.
