Abstract:Developing high-performance poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) significantly widens the practical applications of flexible organic thermoelectric devices, while the water-based co-solvent dopants and/or post-treatments are still rarely studied so far. Here, we develop a one-step post-treatment to improve the power factor of PEDOT:PSS films by using a water-based solution, which is composed of co-solvent (polar solvent dimethylacetamide (DMAC) and deionized water) and organic reducing agent L-ascorbic acid (LAA). The 80 vol.% DMAC solution significantly boosts the room-temperature electrical conductivity of the films from 5 to 964 S cm−1, while the Seebeck coefficient can be further enhanced from 18.7 to 25 μV K−1 by treating with 0.5 mol L−1 LAA, contributing to a significantly improved power factor of 55.3 μW m−1 K−2. The boosted electrical conductivity is ascribed to the separated PEDOT and PSS phases triggered by the high dielectric constant and polarity of DMAC; while the improved Seebeck coefficient is attributed to the reduced oxidation degree of PEDOT from the reducing agent LAA, both confirmed by the comprehensive structural and morphological characterizations. Furthermore, a maximum power factor of 64.4 μW m−1 K−2 can be achieved at 360 K and the observed temperature-dependent electrical transport behavior can be well explained by the Mott variable range hopping model. Besides, a flexible thermoelectric device, assembled by the as-fabricated PEDOT:PSS films, exhibits a maximum output power of ∼23 nW at a temperature difference of 25 K, indicating the potential for applying to low-grade wearable electronics.

Abstract:Continuous acid-base treatment can achieve high thermoelectric performance for PEDOT:PSS film, but multiple surface treatments damage samples easily, lowering yield rates as well as increasing preparation costs, preventing its commercialization. To this end, we present an amphoteric salt-based post-treatment strategy for optimizing the charge transport properties and doping levels of PEDOT:PSS films, thereby achieving high electrical conductivity ( σ ) and Seebeck coefficient ( S ) simultaneously. As a result, the optimal PEDOT:PSS thermoelectric film delivers a σ of 1462 S·cm −1 and a S of 26.2 μV·K −1 , thus achieving a power factor ( PF ) of 100.4 μW·m −1 ·K −2 , which is significantly higher than pristine specimens with a PF lower than 0.1 μW·m −1 ·K −2 .

Abstract:The power factor of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) film can be significantly improved by optimizing the oxidation level of the film in oxidation and reduction processes. However, precise control over the oxidation and reduction effects in PEDOT:PSS remains a challenge, which greatly sacrifices both S and σ . Here, we propose a two-step post-treatment using a mixture of ethylene glycol (EG) and Arginine (Arg) and sulfuric acid (H 2 SO 4 ) in sequence to engineer high-performance PEDOT:PSS thermoelectric films. The high-polarity EG dopant removes the excess non-ionized PSS and induces benzenoid-to-quinoid conformational change in the PEDOT:PSS films. In particular, basic amino acid Arg tunes the oxidation level of PEDOT:PSS and prevents the films from over-oxidation during H 2 SO 4 post-treatment, leading to increased S . The following H 2 SO 4 post-treatment further induces highly orientated lamellar stacking microstructures to increase σ , yielding a maximum power factor of 170.6 μW m −1 K −2 at 460 K. Moreover, a novel trigonal-shape thermoelectric device is designed and assembled by the as-prepared PEDOT:PSS films in order to harvest heat via a vertical temperature gradient. An output power density of 33 μW cm −2 is generated at a temperature difference of 40 K, showing the potential application for low-grade wearable electronic devices.

Abstract:Thermoelectric (TE) materials that can directly convert heat into electricity are of significance for sustainable development. Organic TE materials have attracted extensive attention owing to their abundance of elements, low material processing cost, high mechanical flexibility and intrinsically low thermal conductivity. In the organic TE family PEDOT:PSS is the most promising material. In this work, we report a facile approach to enhance the TE properties of PEDOT:PSS through a treatment with cosolvents of organic solvents and water or solutions consisting of cosolvents and organic salts. When PEDOT:PSS films are treated with a cosolvent of 80 vol% dimethylformamide (DMF)-20 vol% water, the electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient can reach 1055 S cm(-1) and 22.3 mu V K-1, respectively, leading to an optimal power factor of 52.5 mu W m(-1) K-2. The TE performance becomes even higher after a treatment with a solution of a cosolvent and organic salt. After being treated with a solution of 0.1 M methylammonium iodide in 80 vol% DMF-20 vol% water, the PEDOT:PSS films can exhibit an electrical conductivity of 1831 S cm(-1), a Seebeck coefficient of 28 mu V K-1, and a power factor of 144 mu W m(-1) K-2. This is the highest power factor ever achieved for PEDOT:PSS via a one-step post-treatment. The enhancement in the TE properties can be attributed to the synergetic effects of the organic solvents and water during the cosolvent treatments and effects of the salt and cosolvents during the solution treatments. The treatments can increase the charge mobility of the PEDOT:PSS films by partially depleting PSS from PEDOT:PSS and causing the conformational change of PEDOT chains.
Deciphering the superior thermoelectric property of post-treatment-free PEDOT:PSS/IL hybrid by X-ray and neutron scattering characterization

Abstract:Abstract In this work, a polymer and ionic liquid (IL) hybrid with superior thermoelectric performance is prepared via a system design of the chemical composition, molar ratio of the constituent molecules and manipulating the structure in solution and dried films. The solution-casted hybrid film, consisting of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tricyanomethanide (EMIM:TCM), shows the highest power factor of 175 μW m −1 K −2 in the polymer hybrid prepared by a post-treatment-free method. With a set of complementary structure characterization methods, it is found that EMIM:TCM can induce the structure reorganization of PEDOT:PSS in solution from a core-shell model to a rod-like model, during which PEDOT partially separates from PSS that eases the conductive network formation. In addition, the oxidation level of PEDOT:PSS is reduced by adding EMIM:TCM. Based on which, the PEDOT:PSS/IL hybrid shows the best performance in optimizing the conductivity (1163 S cm −1 ) and Seebeck coefficient (38.8 μV K −1 ) simultaneously.

Abstract:Thermoelectric (TE) energy harvesting can effectively convert waste heat into electricity, which is a crucial technology to solve energy concerns. As a promising candidate for energy conversion, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly (styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) has gained significant attention owing to its easy doping, high transparency, and solution processability. However, the TE performance of PEDOT:PSS still needs to be further enhanced. Herein, different approaches have been applied for tuning the TE properties: (i) direct dipping PEDOT:PSS thin films in ionic liquid; (ii) post-treatment of the films with concentrated sulfuric acid (H 2 SO 4 ), and then dipping in ionic liquid. Besides, the same bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide (TFSI) anion and different cation salts, including 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium (EMIM + ) and lithium (Li + ), are selected to study the influence of varying cation types on the TE properties of PEDOT:PSS. The Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity of the PEDOT:PSS film treated with H 2 SO 4 EMIM:TFSI increase simultaneously, and the resulting maximum power factor is 46.7 μW⋅m −1 ⋅K –2 , which may be attributed to the ionic liquid facilitating the rearrangement of the molecular chain of PEDOT. The work provides a reference for the development of organic films with high TE properties.

Abstract:Poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is a promising thermoelectric (TE) material. Nonetheless, its practical application is hindered by the poor TE properties of the pristine PEDOT:PSS and complicated treatment procedures. Enhancing its electrical conductivity is a key step for the improvement of TE properties. Here, a simple method is introduced to enhance the conductivity by adding sulfonic acid into the PEDOT:PSS solution. A systematic study of representative sulfonic acids with various functional groups suggests that steric effect induced by the functional groups has remarkable impact on the conductivity. The highest conductivity of 1996 S cm −1 is observed in benzenesulfonic acid‐doped PEDOT:PSS films. The doped PEDOT:PSS films are further treated with dimethyl sulfoxide and hydrazine successively or synchronously to tune the oxidation level. A maximum power factor (PF) of 203.1 µW m −1 K −2 is obtained. The high PF of treated PEDOT:PSS allows the realization of a flexible thermoelectric generator, which can generate 4.6 mV thermovoltage when attached on human skin. It also shows a good linear response with the increase of temperature difference; thus, it can be potentially used as a flexible thermal sensor. The facile fabrication process and good TE performance provide PEDOT:PSS an opportunity in wearable electronics.

Abstract:An innovative composite recipe coupling binary mixtures of ammonium salts of ammonium formate and polar solvents 2-methoxyethanol has been successfully demonstrated as an effective surface-treatment reagent for significantly improving the thermoelectric performance of the baked poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) films. The unique combination opens a new avenue to simultaneously improve the Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity of the baked PEDOT:PSS films for obtaining the remarkably enhanced power factor of ∼20 μW/mK2 and the figure-of-merit (ZT) of 0.033.
A Novel and Green Method for Preparing Highly Conductive PEDOT:PSS Films for Thermoelectric Energy Harvesting

Abstract:As a π-conjugated conductive polymer, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is recognized as a promising environmentally friendly thermoelectric material. However, its low conductivity has limited applications in the thermoelectric field. Although thermoelectric efficiency can be significantly enhanced through post-treatment doping, these processes often involve environmentally harmful organic solvents or reagents. In this study, a novel and environmentally benign method using purified water (including room temperature water and subsequent warm water) to treat PEDOT:PSS film has been developed, resulting in improved thermoelectric performance. The morphology data, chemical composition, molecular structure, and thermoelectric performance of the films before and after treatment were characterized and analyzed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), Raman spectrum, XRD pattern, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and a thin film thermoelectric measurement system. The results demonstrate that the water treatment effectively removes nonconductive PSS from PEDOT:PSS composites, significantly enhancing their conductivity. Treated films exhibit improved thermoelectric properties, particularly those treated only 15 times with room temperature water, achieving a high electrical conductivity of 62.91 S/cm, a Seebeck coefficient of 14.53 μV K−1, and an optimal power factor of 1.3282 μW·m–1·K–2. In addition, the subsequent warm water treatment can further enhance the thermoelectric properties of the film sample. The underlying mechanism of these improvements is also discussed.

Abstract:An effective strategy combining dual-solvent treatment and composite has been proposed to improve the thermoelectric property of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS). Firstly, a composite method with two-dimensional (2D) boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs), also known as white graphene, was first proposed to improve the Seebeck coefficient of PEDOT:PSS thin film based on an energy filtering effect at the conjunctions. BNNSs were obtained by a facile liquid exfoliation method. Further, a dual-solvent treatment incorporating N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) was performed to optimize the electrical conductivity of PEDOT:PSS/BNNSs hybrid thin films. On the one hand, DMF as first treatment can effectively remove part of the redundant non-conductive PSS leading to an increased electrical conductivity. On the other hand, DMSO as second treatment induced a transformation of PEDOT from benzoid to quinoid structure, resulting in a further enhanced electrical conductivity without a reduction in Seebeck coefficient for PEDOT:PSS/BNNSs. Eventually, a remarkable improvement in thermoelectric power factor was achieved to be 100.1 μW m−1 K−2 and a large figure of merit (ZT) was estimated to be 0.12 for PEDOT:PSS/BNNSs5 hybrid thin film at room temperature.

Abstract:Thermoelectric (TE) materials are important for the sustainable development because they enable the direct harvesting of low-quality heat into electricity. Among them, conducting polymers have attracted great attention arising from their advantages, such as flexibility, nontoxicity, easy availability, and intrinsically low thermal conductivity. In this work, a novel and facile method is reported to significantly enhance the TE property of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) films through sequential post-treatments with common acids and bases. Compared with the as-prepared PEDOT:PSS, both the Seebeck coefficients and electrical conductivities can be remarkably enhanced after the treatments. The oxidation level, which significantly impacts the TE property of the PEDOT:PSS films, can also be well tuned by controlling the experimental conditions during the base treatment. The optimal PEDOT:PSS films can have a Seebeck coefficient of 39.2 mu V K-1 and a conductivity of 2170 S cm(-1) at room temperature, and the corresponding power factor is 334 mu W (m(-1) K-2). The enhancement in the TE properties is attributed to the synergetic effect of high charge mobility by the acid treatment and the optimal oxidation level tuned by the base treatment.

Abstract:Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) has garnered significant considerable interest in the field of flexible thermoelectric films owing to its very low thermal conductivity, highly adjustable electrical conductivity ( σ ) and Seebeck coefficient ( S ). However, improving the σ and S of PEDOT:PSS simultaneously remains challenging for achieving efficient thermoelectrics. In this paper, we proposed a two-step process involving femtosecond laser irradiation and ionic liquid (IL) 1-Ethyl-3-MethylImidazolium DiCyAmide treatment to enhance the thermoelectric properties of PEDOT: PSS thin films. This finding revealed that the increase in PEDOT: PSS conductivity was attributed to both laser irradiation and the post-treatment with IL, in which the former enabled the efficient elimination of insulating PSS from the surface of the conductive polymer, the latter further contributed to the decoupling of PEDOT and PSS. The enhanced Seebeck coefficient was due to the ion exchange resulting from IL post-processing, which regulated the PEDOT doping level. By employing laser irradiation and surface treatment with IL, the modified PEDOT:PSS films showed a S of 20.63 μV·K −1 , a σ of 960.7 S·cm −1 , and a power factor (PF) of 40.89 μW·m −1 ·K −2 . Furthermore, a thermoelectric device was developed which can generate a voltage of 0.8 mV at a temperature difference of 11.7 K.

A Facile Dedoping Approach for Effectively Tuning Thermoelectricity and Acidity of PEDOT:PSS Films

Abstract:A facile approach namely controlling the pH level of 5 wt% dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) doped poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) solution with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) was utilized for the first time in successfully optimizing the thermoelectric conversion efficiency of PEDOT:PSS films. The largely varied Seebeck coefficients and electrical conductivities of the pH controlled PEDOT:PSS films which could thus construct a beneficial curve for locating the optimized power factor are clearly shown from the significant changes of the carrier concentration via the dedoping of PEDOT. The correlation between pH value and carrier concentration as well as the power factor is experimentally found with numerical description covering a full pH range. The applied technique and the resulting optimized thermoelectric properties and possible bio-compatibility not only provide a fundamental understanding of the thermoelectric conducting polymers but widely disclose a variety of potential applications in the future. Abstract:We report on the modification of the thermoelectric properties of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxylthiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) thin films by means of a simple post treatment of the solid thin films realized by drop-coating. We show that the organic polar solvents, dimethyl sulfoxide and ethylene glycol as secondary dopants for PEDOT:PSS, only affect the film morphology for which a high electrical conductivity is observed. In contrast, ethanolamine (MEA) and ammonia solutions are reduction agents that improve the density of PEDOT chains in the reduced forms (polaron and neutral states), resulting in the trade-off between Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity. Furthermore, we show that the nature of amines determines the reduction degree: the nitrogen lone pair electrons in MEA are easier to be donated than those in ammonia solution and will therefore neutralize the PEDOT chains.

Abstract:Herein, poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly (styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) films with improved thermoelectric properties are fabricated via spray coating followed by a sequential, two-step post-treatment process with ethylene glycol (EG) and a methylammonium iodide (MAI) solution. The EG treatment greatly increases the electrical conductivity of the PEDOT-PSS film up to 1752.1 S cm −1 , with an unchanged Seebeck coefficient of 15–17 μV K −1 , while the optimal use of 0.05 M MAI in DMSO/DI water for the second step provides a high power factor of 122.3 μW m −1 K −2 , along with an increased conductivity of 2226.8 S cm −1 and Seebeck coefficient of 22.8 μV K −1 . Notably, the obtained power factor is among the highest reported for spray-coated polymer-based thermoelectric devices. The performance enhancement is attributed to phase separation of the non-conductive PSS from the PEDOT, the change in chain conformation, the preferential orientation of the PEDOT crystallites, and the manipulation of energy levels. High thermoelectric performance of the as-fabricated PEDOT:PSS on a plastic substrate is established by using a facile proof-of-concept thermoelectric generator to generate a maximum power density of 12.1 nW cm −2 . Abstract:A high power factor must be achieved to improve the thermoelectric (TE) output of organic TE materials though the tradeoff between electrical conductivity and the Seebeck coefficient is a serious obstacle to the further development of these materials. Here, systematic control of the electrostatic interaction between a conducting polymer and a dopant induces a positive deviation from this TE tradeoff relation so that the electrical conductivity and the Seebeck coefficient simultaneously increase. Upon reduction of the electrostatic interaction, substantial changes in the film morphology, chain conformation, and crystalline ordering are observed, all of which critically affect the TE charge transport. As a result, the electrostatic interaction control is found to be an effective strategy to enhance the power factor, overcoming the tradeoff between TE parameters. Adapting this strategy to poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene‐sulfonate results in a remarkable power factor (=700.2 µW m−1 K−2 ) and figure of merit ZT (=0.25).

High-Performance Post-Treatment-Free Pedot Based Thermoelectric with the Establishment of Long-Range Ordered Conductive Paths

Abstract:: In this work, post-treatment-free polymer hybrids, consisting of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) and ionic liquids (ILs), were fabricated for the thermoelectric (TE) application. By optimizing the ILs’ molar concentration (0-0.5 M) and chemical composition, that is varying the cyano-based anions coupled with 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium cations, a superior TE performance (power factor of 190 μW m −1 K −2 ) was achieved. The excellent TE performance was attributed to the conductive network under the coupling effect of molecular structure (such as oxidation level, conformation and crystallization of PEDOT chains) and microstructure (long-range ordered conductive paths). Especially, the long-range conductive paths were proved to be made of rod-like microdomains, based on detailed structure analysis with micro-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering. These paths enabled carrier transport among microdomains of PEDOT:PSS/IL hybrids. Moreover, the conductive network of PEDOT:PSS/IL hybrids showed good environmental and mechanical stability, enabling the fabrication of flexible TE generators.
Improved Thermoelectric Properties and Environmental Stability of Conducting PEDOT:PSS Films Post-treated With Imidazolium Ionic Liquids

Abstract:Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is one of the most popular conducting polymers and widely used as polymer thermoelectric materials, and its thermoelectric performance could be improved by a variety of post-treatment processes. This paper reported two series of post-treatment methods to enhance the thermoelectric performance. The first series method included pre-treatment of PEDOT:PSS film with formamide, followed by imidazolium-based ionic liquids. The second series method included pre-treatment of PEDOT:PSS film with formamide, followed by sodium formaldehyde sulfoxylate, and finally imidazolium-based ionic liquids. Two series of post-treatment methods significantly improved the power factor of PEDOT:PSS when compared to that of PEDOT:PSS treated with formamide only. For example, using the first series post-treatment method with 40 vol.% ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) amide, the Seebeck coefficient of the PEDOT:PSS film increased from 14.9 to 28.5 μV/K although the electrical conductivity reduced from 2,873 to 1,701 S/cm, resulting in a substantial improvement in the overall power factor from 63.6 to 137.8 μW/K2m. The electrical conductivity enhancement in the formamide-treatment process was in part ascribed to the removal of the insulating PSS component. Further treatment of PEDOT:PSS film with ionic liquid caused dedoping of PEDOT and hence increased in Seebeck coefficient. In contrast, second series post-treatment method led to the reduction in electrical conductivity from 2,873 to 641 S/cm but a big improvement in the Seebeck coefficient from 14.9 to 61.1 μV/K and thus the overall power factor reached up to ~239.2 μW/K2m. Apart from the improvement in electrical conductivity, the increase in Seebeck coefficient is on account of the substantial dedoping of PEDOT polymer to its neutral form and thus leads to the big improvement of its Seebeck coefficient. The environmental stability of ionic liquid-treated PEDOT:PSS films were examined. It was found that the ionic liquid treated PEDOT:PSS retained more than 70% Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity at 75% RH humidity and 70°C for 480 h. The improved long-term TE stability is attributed to the strong ionic interaction between sulfonate anions and bulky imidazolium cations that effectively block the penetration of water and lessen the tendency to take up water from the air.

Abstract:Conducting polymers have promising thermoelectric application because they have many advantages including abundant elements, mechanical flexibility, and nontoxicity. The thermoelectric properties of conducting polymers strongly depend on their chemical structure and microstructure. Here, we report a novel and facile method to significantly enhance the thermoelectric properties of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) films through a treatment with organic solutions of inorganic salts. N,N-Dimethylformamide (DMF) and a common inorganic salt like zinc chloride (ZnCl2) are used as the solvent and solute of the solutions, respectively. The treatments can significantly increase both the Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity of thePEDOT:PSS films. The thermoelectric properties of thePEDOT:PSS films are sensitive to the experimental conditions, such as the salt concentration, treatment temperature, and the cation of the salts. After treatment at the optimal experimental conditions, thePEDOT:PSS films can exhibit a Seebeck coefficient of 26.1 μV/K and an electrical conductivity of over 1400 S/cm at room temperature. The corresponding power factor is 98.2 μW/(m·K(2)). The mechanism for the enhancement in the thermoelectric properties is attributed to the segregation of some PSSH chains fromPEDOT:PSS and the conformation change of PEDOT chains as a result of the synergetic effects of inorganic salts and DMF.
