Abstract:Biological systems are inherently stochastic and uncertain. Thus, research in bioinformatics, biomedical engineering and computational biology has to deal with a large amount of uncertainties. Fuzzy logic has shown to be a powerful tool in capturing different uncertainties in engineering systems. In recent years, fuzzy logic based modeling and analysis approaches are also becoming popular in analyzing biological data and modeling biological systems. Numerous research and application results have been reported that demonstrated the effectiveness of fuzzy logic in solving a wide range of biological problems found in bioinformatics, biomedical engineering, and computational biology. Contributed by leading experts world-wide, this edited book contains 16 chapters presenting representative research results on the application of fuzzy systems to genome sequence assembly, gene expression analysis, promoter analysis, cis-regulation logic analysis and synthesis, reconstruction of genetic and cellular networks, as well as biomedical problems, such as medical image processing, electrocardiogram data classification and anesthesia monitoring and control. Abstract:The study offers an introduction to the paradigm, concepts and algorithms of Computational Intelligence (CI). We elaborate on the main technologies of CI: neural networks, fuzzy sets or Granular Computing, in general, and evolutionary optimization and identify their focal points and stress an overall synergistic character of these technologies, which ultimately gives rise to the highly symbiotic processing environment. Furthermore, the main advantages and limitations of the CI technologies are discussed. The key linkages of CI with the area of Software Engineering, especially its quantitative facet, are stressed.

Abstract:This book presents a variety of recently developed methods for generating fuzzy rules from data with the help of neural networks and evolutionary algorithms. Special efforts have been put on dealing with knowledge incorporation into neural and evolutionary systems and knowledge extraction from data with the help of fuzzy logic. On the one hand, knowledge that is understandable to human beings can be extracted from data using evolutionary and learning methods by maintaining the interpretability of the generated fuzzy rules. On the other hand, a priori knowledge like expert knowledge and human preferences can be incorporated into evolution and learning, taking advantage of the knowledge representation capability of fuzzy rule systems and fuzzy preference models. Several engineering application examples in the fields of intelligent vehicle systems, process modeling and control and robotics are presented.

Abstract:This article presents a neural-network-based fuzzy logic control (NN-FLC) system. The NN-FLC model has the learning capabilities for constructing membership functions and extracting fuzzy rules from training examples. Both unsupervised and supervised training algorithms are used to find the membership functions of the FLC. Competitive learning algorithms are employed to evaluate fuzzy logic rules. Matlab programs using both neural and fuzzy toolboxes are developed to implement the NN-FLC model. Computer simulations of the inverted pendulum controlled by NN-FLC system were conducted to illustrate the self-learning ability of the network. (C) 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Abstract:The principle and functions of a developmental tool for fuzzy control were introduced, which consists of the edit of fuzzy membership functions, learning and optimization of fuzzy rules, code generation for MCU chips or DSP chips. Algorithms for automatic generation of fuzzy rules based on multi layer perceptron network, five layer fuzzy neural network, genetic algorithm were presented. The characteristics and results of these algorithms were analysed.

Abstract:We describe in this book, hybrid intelligent systems based mainly on type-2 fuzzy logic for intelligent control. Hybrid intelligent systems combine several intelligent computing paradigms, including fuzzy logic, and bio-inspired optimization algorithms, which can be used to produce powerful automatic control systems. The book is organized in three main parts, which contain a group of chapters around a similar subject. The first part consists of chapters with the main theme of theory and design algorithms, which are basically chapters that propose new models and concepts, which can be the basis for achieving intelligent control with interval type-2 fuzzy logic. The second part of the book is comprised of chapters with the main theme of evolutionary optimization of type-2 fuzzy systems in intelligent control with the aim of designing optimal type-2 fuzzy controllers for complex control problems in diverse areas of application, including mobile robotics, aircraft dynamics systems and hardware implementations. The third part of the book is formed with chapters dealing with the theme of bio-inspired optimization of type-2 fuzzy systems in intelligent control, which includes the application of particle swarm intelligence and ant colony optimization algorithms for obtaining optimal type-2 fuzzy controllers.

Abstract:The combination of Artificial Neural Networks and Fuzzy Logic Systems enables the representation of real-world problems via the creation of intelligent and adaptive systems. By adapting the interconnections between layers, Artificial Neural networks are able to learn. A computing framework based on the concept of fuzzy set and rules as well as fuzzy reasoning is offered by fuzzy logic inference systems. The fusion of the aforementioned adaptive structures is called a "Neuro-Fuzzy" system. In this paper, the main elements of said structures are examined. Researchers have noticed that this fusion could be applied for pattern recognition in medical applications.

Abstract:When considering the concept of distributed intelligent control, three types of components can be defined: (i) fuzzy sensors which provide a representation of measurements as fuzzy subsets, (ii) fuzzy actuators which can operate in the real world based on the fuzzy subsets they receive, and, (iii) the fuzzy components of the inference. As a result, these elements generate new fuzzy subsets from the fuzzy elements that were previously used. The purpose of this article is to define the elements of an interoperable technology Fuzzy Applied Cell Control-soft computing language for the development of fuzzy components with distributed intelligence implemented on the DSP target. The cells in the network are configured using the operations of symbolic fusion, symbolic inference and fuzzy–real symbolic transformation, which are based on the concepts of fuzzy meaning and fuzzy description. The two applications presented in the article, Agent-based modeling and fuzzy logic for simulating pedestrian crowds in panic decision-making situations and Fuzzy controller for mobile robot, are both timely. The increasing occurrence of panic moments during mass events prompted the investigation of the impact of panic on crowd dynamics and the simulation of pedestrian flows in panic situations. Based on the research presented in the article, we propose a Fuzzy controller-based system for determining pedestrian flows and calculating the shortest evacuation distance in panic situations. Fuzzy logic, one of the representation techniques in artificial intelligence, is a well-known method in soft computing that allows the treatment of strong constraints caused by the inaccuracy of the data obtained from the robot’s sensors. Based on this motivation, the second application proposed in the article creates an intelligent control technique based on Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC), a feature of intelligent control systems that can be used as an alternative to traditional control techniques for mobile robots. This method allows you to simulate the experience of a human expert. The benefits of using a network of fuzzy components are not limited to those provided distributed systems. Fuzzy cells are simple to configure while also providing high-level functions such as mergers and decision-making processes.

Abstract:Fuzzy Logic in Management demonstrates that difficult problems and changes in the management environment can be more easily handled by bringing fuzzy logic into the practice of management. This explicit theme is developed through the book as follows: Chapter 1, "Management and Intelligent Support Technologies", is a short survey of management leadership and what can be gained from support technologies. Chapter 2, "Fuzzy Sets and Fuzzy Logic", provides a short introduction to fuzzy sets, fuzzy relations, the extension principle, fuzzy implications and linguistic variables. Chapter 3, "Group Decision Support Systems", deals with group decision making, and discusses methods for supporting the consensus reaching processes. Chapter 4, "Fuzzy Real Options for Strategic Planning", summarizes research where the fuzzy real options theory was implemented as a series of models. These models were thoroughly tested on a number of real life investments, and validated in 2001. Chapter 5, "Soft Computing Methods for Reducing the Bullwhip Effect", summarizes research work focused on the demand fluctuations in supply chains. The program enhanced existing theoretical frameworks with fuzzy logic modeling. Chapter 6, "Knowledge Management", outlines the collection, storing, transfer and management of knowledge using fuzzy logic. The principles are worked out in detail with software agents. Chapter 7, "Mobile Technology Application", introduces various applications including empirical facts and how mobile technology can be supported with software agents. Implicitly the book develops themes that successful companies should use to (1) master effectiveness and quality in both the details and the whole, (2) build on and work with flexibility, and (3) support continuous learning in both the organizational and the individual level.

Abstract:An investigation of deep fuzzy systems is presented in this paper. A deep fuzzy system is represented by recursive fuzzy systems from an input terminal to output terminal. Recursive fuzzy systems are sequences of fuzzy grade memberships obtained using fuzzy transmition functions and recursive calls to fuzzy systems. A recursive fuzzy system which calls a fuzzy system n times includes fuzzy chains to evaluate the final grade membership of this recursive system. A connection matrix which includes recursive calls are used to represent recursive fuzzy systems.

Abstract:The system's ability to adapt and self-organize are two key factors when it comes to how well the system can survive the changes to the environment and the plant they work within. Intelligent control improves these two factors in controllers. Considering the increasing complexity of dynamic systems along with their need for feedback controls, using more complicated controls has become necessary and intelligent control can be a suitable response to this necessity. This paper briefly describes the structure of intelligent control and provides a review on fuzzy logic and neural networks which are some of the base methods for intelligent control. The different aspects of these two methods are then compared together and an example of a combined method is presented.

Abstract:More than 40 years after fuzzy logic control appeared as an effective tool to deal with complex processes, the research on fuzzy control systems has constantly evolved. Mamdani fuzzy control was originally introduced as a modelfree control approach based on expert?s experience and knowledge. Due to the lack of a systematic framework to study Mamdani fuzzy systems, we have witnessed growing interest in fuzzy model-based approaches with Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy systems and singleton-type fuzzy systems (also called piecewise multiaffine systems) over the past decades. This paper reviews the key features of the three above types of fuzzy systems. Through these features, we point out the historical rationale for each type of fuzzy systems and its current research mainstreams. However, the focus is put on fuzzy model-based approaches developed via Lyapunov stability theorem and linear matrix inequality (LMI) formulations. Finally, our personal viewpoint on the perspectives and challenges of the future fuzzy control research is discussed.

Abstract:A novel fuzzy identification approach of complex systems is proposed based on an updated version of pi-sigma neural network. By taking advantage of the learning and nonlinear mapping abilities of the neural networks, the proposed method has the following characteristics. The consequence function of each fuzzy rule can be a nonlinear function, which makes it capable to deal with the nonlinear sytems more efficiently. Each parameter of the consequence functions is convenient to be adjusted on-line so that automatic rule modification can be realized. The membership function of each fuzzy subset can be modified easily on-line. In this way, the cumbersome task to form fuzzy rules from a set of given data and to prescribe an appropriate membership function for each premise variable can be avoided. Examples of fuzzy modelling in weather forecast, burden optimization and fuzzy control system design show that our algorithm is effective in quite wide fields. We also apply our scheme to the decoupling control of a rigid robot manipulator. With the help of the self-organizing fuzzy mechanism, the controller acquires a satisfying performance under large parameter uncertainties.
