Abstract:The energy and spatial distribution of intragap trap states of the TiO2 photoanode of dye-sensitized solar cells and their impact on charge recombination were investigated by means of time-resolved charge extraction (TRCE) and transient photo-voltage (TPV). The photoanodes were built from TiO2 nanospheroids with different aspect ratios, and the TRCE results allowed differentiation of two different types of trap states, that is, deep and shallow ones at the surface and in the bulk of the TiO2 particles, respectively. These trap states exhibit distinctly different characteristic energy with only a slight variation in the particle size, as derived from the results of the density of states. Analyses of the size-dependent TPV kinetics revealed that in a moderate photovoltage regime of about 375-625 mV, the dynamics of electron recombination are dominated by shallow trap states in the bulk, which can be well accounted for by the mechanism of multiple-trap-limited charge transport.

Abstract:Trap states play important role in electron transport of dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Different trap states (surface and bulk traps) contribute differently to the performance of DSSCs. However, there is a lack of classification of the trap states, especially in recent doping works of the photoanodes. In this work, the Ce4+ (0.3, 0.6 and 0.9% molar ratio) in TiO2 and Ti4+ (15, 40 and 70% molar ratio) in SnO2 are assigned to surface traps and surface-and-bulk coexisted traps, respectively. The property of each trap state and its influence to the electron transport are characterized. Both the surface and bulk traps deteriorate the electron transport in DSSCs, however, the negative role of surface traps can easily be eliminated by surface modification in contrast to the bulk traps. Furthermore, contrary to the literature that the trap states will accelerate the interface recombination, it is found that the interface electron recombination time is prolonged with Ce4+ surface traps in TiO2 and Ti4+ bulk traps in SnO2, indicating that the recombination time is closely related to the property of the trap states.

Abstract:Hierarchically structured TiO2 microspheres were prepared at a low temperature by combining a sol-gel process with a solvothermal route and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. Results indicate that the phase structure of the as-prepared TiO2 products undergoes a transformation, which changes from amorphous microspheres with a smooth surface in the sol-gel process to hierarchical anatase ones consisting of nanocrystallines after the solvothermal treatment. The hierarchical anatase TiO2 microsphere shows large surface areas and good light scattering effects as the photoelectrodes for dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). DSSCs based on TiO2 microspheres exhibit an improvement power conversion efficiency of 6.58% and a high short current density of 13.83 mA/cm2 as compared to the commercial P25 based DSSCs with a power conversion efficiency of 4.94% and a high short current density of 10.28 mA/cm2.

Abstract:The photophysics of charge-transfer and recombination mechanisms in a heterojunction structure of CdSe/CdS/Au quantum dots (QDs) are studied by temperature-dependent steady-state photoluminescence (PL) and time-resolved PL (TRPL). We manipulate the charge transfer from core to shell surface by varying the tunneling barrier height resulting from temperature variation and the barrier width resulting from shell thickness variation. The charge-transfer process, which can be described by a tunneling transmission model, is manifested by two competitive recombination processes, an intrinsic exciton emission and a trap emission in the near-infrared (NIR) range. Our study establishes the photophysics foundation for the core/shell/metal application in photocatalyst and optoelectronics.

Abstract:Hierarchical TiO2 microspheres assembled by nanospindles were prepared via a two-step hydrothermal method. The as-prepared products have uniform diameters of similar to 450 nm and surface area of similar to 88 m(2) g(-1). The optical investigation evidenced that the photoanode film has a prominent light scattering effect at a wavelength range of 600-800 nm and possesses enhanced dye loading capacity. In addition, the electron recombination and transport dynamic measurements indicated that these hierarchical products could suppress the recombination and improve the diffusion coefficient of the photoelectrons, which can be attributed to the improvement of the connectivity by bridging the neighbouring microspheres through the embedded nanospindles. As a result, a high power conversion efficiency of 8.5% was demonstrated, indicating a similar to 30% improvement compared with the cell derived from the well-defined nanocrystalline microspheres (6.5%).

Abstract:In this study, well-crystallized mesoporous anatase TiO2 spheres (TiO2-MS) were prepared via a simple sol–gel process followed by subsequent hydrothermal treatment and then used as photoelectrode for quantum-dot-sensitized solar cell (QDSC) application. The mesoporous structure exhibits efficient QD loading and good light-scattering properties for light harvesting. In the meantime, both surface photovoltage technique based on lock-in amplifier and transient photovoltage measurement reveal that the QDs-sensitized mesoporous TiO2 sphere photoelectrode is conducive to promote the separation of photo-induced charges and reduce the charge recombination owing to the efficient charge transfer. As a result, the QDSCs based on mesoporous TiO2 spheres photoelectrode shows a power conversion efficiency of 1.34 %, which is significantly higher than that derived from P25 nanoparticle electrode. The relation between the performance of QDSCs and their photovoltage characterization was also discussed.

Abstract:By measuring the photo-voltage and photo-current transients, the charge recombination and transporting dynamics in a series of zinc-doped titania based dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) were investigated. Based on the electron recombination and charge collection time constants, zinc-doping effects to the conduction band levels and the trap state distribution of anode were found. The results show that the zinc-doping enhanced the open-circuit voltage of DSCs by raising the conduction band levels and elongating the electron recombination time constants.

Abstract:The density of state (DOS) of intra-gap traps and the dynamics of electron transport of a dye-sensitized TiO2 solar cell were investigated by means of time-resolved charge extraction (TRCE). The intrinsic chemical capacitance of the TiO2 layer was separated from the parasitic capacitance of the FTO electrode, and was found to be dependent biexponentially on the photovoltage. It was shown that the shallow traps (>700 meV) differ from the deep ones (<350 meV) by the respective characteristic energy of 48 meV and 765 meV, and that the amount of shallow traps is more than an order of magnitude larger than that of the deep ones. Our results support the mechanism of shallow-trap dominant multiple-trap limited charge transport, and suggest a substantial margin for the short-circuit photocurrent density to reach its theoretical limit.

Abstract:The loading amount of quantum dots and trap density are the significant issues for quantum dot sensitized solar cells. Anatase TiO 2 nanodendrite array is employed as the photo-electrodes for the CuInS 2 quantum dot sensitized solar cells instead of the traditional TiO 2 nanowire array, which is prepared by two-step hydrothermal process. The excellent charge generation and charge separation properties have been exhibited by the CuInS 2 quantum dots sensitized photo-electrodes based on the anatase TiO 2 nanodendrite array, which are characterized by the optical absorption spectra and photoluminescence spectra. Meanwhile, the branches from anatase TiO 2 nanodendrite array provide much more paths for charge transfer and reduce the charge recombination traps in photo-electrodes, which have provided excellent charge transfer property for the solar cells. As a result, higher current density can be obtained by anatase TiO 2 nanodendrite array structure based CuInS 2 quantum dot sensitized solar cells, which has exhibited the photovoltaic conversion efficiency enhancement from 4.7% to 5.48%.

Mechanism of Biphasic Charge Recombination and Accumulation in TiO2 Mesoporous Structured Perovskite Solar Cells.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic halide perovskite solar cells are becoming the next big thing in the photovoltaic field owing to their rapidly developing photoelectric conversion performance. Herein, mesoporous structured perovskite devices with various perovskite grain sizes are fabricated by a sequential dropping method, and the charge recombination dynamics is investigated by transient optical-electric measurements. All devices exhibit an overall power conversion efficiency around 15%. More importantly, a biphasic trap-limited charge recombination process is proposed and interpreted by taking into account the specific charge accumulation mechanism in perovskite solar cells. At low Fermi levels, photo-generated electrons predominately populate in the perovskite phase, while at high Fermi levels, most electrons occupy traps in mesoporous TiO2. As a result, the dynamics of charge recombination is, respectively, dominated by the perovskite phase and mesoporous TiO2 in these two cases. The present work would give a new perspective on the charge recombination process in meso-structured perovskite solar cells.
TiO2 surface modification and characterization with nanosized PbS in dye-sensitized solar cells.

Abstract:The nanoporous TiO2 films utilized in dye- sensitized solar cells ( DSSCs) possess a large surface- to- volume ratio, which facilitates the adsorption of sensitizing dye and the recombination due to the high density of surface traps. In this paper, nanosized PbS was fabricated on the TiO2 films. The components of the modified TiO2 film were studied by X- ray diffraction ( XRD) and electron probe microanalysis ( EPMA), while the structure of the film was characterized with BET physisorption and high-resolution scanning electron microscopy ( HRSEM). The results showed that the PbS particles were 2-3 nm and discrete on the surface of TiO2. Diffusion photovoltage ( PV) spectroscopy was employed to study the charge separation and diffusion processes inside modified and unmodified TiO2 films. The diffusion PV signals revealed that the traps on the surface of TiO2 were extremely reduced due to the presence of PbS. The results of transient photovoltage and back I- V characteristics showed that the back reaction, that is, the recombination due to the reaction between an electron on TiO2 and the hole- transporting media, was retarded significantly.
First-Principles Study of the Electron–Hole Recombination Rate at the Interface of the CdSe Quantum Dot and TiO2 Substrate

Abstract:Electron-hole recombination is one of the governing processes in the determination of power conversion efficiency for quantum dot (QD)-sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs). The electron-hole recombination rates of a QDSSC model consisting of CdSe QDs deposited on the anatase TiO2 (101) surface are studied by the first-principles calculations and Marcus charge-transfer theory. The rates are dependent on the QD size and shape, decreasing with size for QDs of the same shape. In a polar solvent, the small-sized QDs tend to have large reorganization energy and strong coupling with the substrate, promoting the probability of electron-hole recombination. However, the influence of the QD size and shape on the recombination rate falls rapidly in a nonpolar solvent. Moreover, the energy gaps between the conduction band minimum of TiO2 and the highest occupied molecular orbitals of QDs are located in the inverted regime in the Marcus theory, suggesting an unusual rate dependence on the band structures of the QD and TiO2 substrate. As both the electron injection rate and the electron-hole recombination rate decrease with the QD size, it suggests a strategy of balancing a large injection rate and a small recombination rate in the polar solvent by tuning the QD size.

Abstract:Anatase and rutile TiO2 were investigated with photoluminescence techniques under the weak excitation condition, where trap states play a vital role in carrier dynamics. The visible emission of anatase and near-infrared (NIR) emission of rutile both exhibit extremely long lifetimes up to milliseconds. The decay processes can be well described by the power-law decay which corresponds to the trapping-detrapping effect. These results indicate that the luminescence processes in both anatase and rutile TiO2 have a close relationship with trap states. The visible emission band was assigned to the donor-acceptor recombination. Oxygen vacancies and hydroxyl groups mainly serve as the donor and acceptor sites, respectively. The NIR luminescence is originated from the recombination of trapped electrons with free holes, while the trapped electrons were formed through two paths, direct trapping or trap-to-trap hopping. The trap states in anatase and rutile TiO2 may largely influence the photocatalysis process of TiO2 and determine the photocatalytic activity under stationary illumination.

Abstract:In this paper, anodic TiO2 nanotubes are blended into the TiO2 mesoporous films based on P25 nanoparticles to assemble a list of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) with different nanotube concentrations. The electron properties of transport and recombination in the fabricated DSSCs are studied by using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and the open-circuit voltage decay technique under AM 1.5 illumination. Results indicate that the electron lifetime increases with increasing the concentration of the anodic TiO2 nanotubes, the electron transport time at a blending level of 10wt% TiO2 nanotubes is short as compared to that at 0wt%, and above 10wt%, the electron transport time has a trend of becoming large. Due to the combining effects of the electron transport and recombination, the electron collecting efficiency and the electron diffusion length obtain maxima at a blending level of 10wt% nanotubes, which results in a highest short circuit current and a maximum energy conversion efficiency at this point in the DSSCs. This study gives a clear explanation for the performance enhancement of TiO2 particle-based DSSCs at a blending level of 10wt% anodic TiO2 nanotubes and for the performance decrease at a blending level over 10wt% anodic TiO2 nanotubes from the angle of the electron transport and recombination. This study also supplies a feasible and easy way to improve the performance of particle-based DSSCs by restraining electron recombination and accelerating electron transportation.

Abstract:Despite the outstanding photovoltaic performance of perovskite solar cells, the correlation between the electron transport layer and the mechanism of photoelectric conversion is still not fully understood. In this paper, the relationship between photovoltaic performance and carrier dynamics is systematically studied in both TiO2- and SnO2-based planar perovskite devices. It is found that the different electron transport layers result in distinct forward scan results and charge dynamics. Based on the charge dynamics results, the influence of the electron transport layer on charge carrier transport and charge recombination is revealed. More importantly, the trap-state density is characterized, which is proven to be related to the charge carrier dynamics and the specific hysteresis behaviour in the perovskite solar cells. The present work would provide new insights into the working mechanisms of electron transport layers and their effect on hysteresis.

Abstract:Power conversion efficiency (PCE) of quantum dot-sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs) was boosted in a TiO2 composite film (TCSF) with delicate design in structure where TiO2 hierarchical porous film (THPF) situated on the top of TiO2 nanorod arrays film (TNAF). In this case, TNAF could supply efficient scattering centers for high light harvesting and direct electrical pathways for fast electron transfer while the THPF could offer porous channels for loading high quantity of previously synthetized quantum dots (QDs) and facilitate the penetration of electrolyte. Meanwhile, in this specific configuration, the presence of anatase-rutile heterojunction at the interface could help the rutile TNAF layer to efficiently collect photo-injected electrons from the anatase THPF layer thus suppressing the recombination of electrons and holes in electrolyte. The results showed that the PCE of QDSSC based on the TNAF photoanode was about 1.4-fold higher (eta =3.05%, J(sc) = 15.86mA cm(-2), V-oc = 0.602 V, FF = 0.319) than that of device based on pure THPF (eta= 2.20%, J(sc) = 13.82 mA cm(-2), V-oc = 0.572 V, FF = 0.278). Abstract:TiO2 hierarchical hollow spheres (THHSs) are considered an ideal material for photoanodes of CdS/CdSe quantum dot-sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs) because of their high specific surface area, strong light scattering effect, and excellent charge transfer capability. However, in a typical CdS/CdSe quantum dot deposition process, chemical bath deposition, the coverage of the CdS/CdSe quantum dots is relatively low (-50%). According to the different surface properties of CdS/CdSe quantum dots and TiO2, we have developed a novel route to increase the quantum dot coverage while preventing their aggregation. In our method, 1dodecanethiol was used as a surface protection molecule on the quantum dots. Then, in the secondary chemical bath deposition process, the newly emerged quantum dots grew' only on the TiO2 surface and thus the coverage notably increased. Eventually, the quantum dot coverage reached 85.4%. This method effectively enhanced light utilization and led to an increase in the photocurrent of the QDSSCs. The reduced blank surface of TiO2 also efficiently suppressed electron-hole recombination. Thus, the photocurrent density was 15.69 mA" cm-2, the fill factor was 0.583, and the voltage was 0.605 V. As a result, a power conversion efficiency of 5.30% was obtained.
