Abstract:Monte Carlo calculations of the statics and dynamics behavior of ring polymers adsorbed on a short-range attractive wall (xy-plane) are described using the bond-fluctuation model. Chain conformation, fraction of segment adsorbed and chain dimensions are measured over a wide range of temperatures. An adsorbed layer begins to form at the larger adsorption transition temperature Ta than a single linear polymer chain. For the dynamics, the mean square displacements and the diffusion coefficients parallel and perpendicular to the z-axis are also calculated. Some comparisons with linear chains are made.

Abstract:By employing molecular dynamics simulation, we explore the conformations of semiflexible ring polymers (SRPs) confined in two parallel surfaces. The conformations of confined SRPs rely on the distance between two parallel surfaces D and the chain stiffness as well as the interaction between SRPs and the surface. For strong confinements with the repulsive surface, SRPs are almost parallel to the surface, however, for weak confinements with the attractive surface, some SRPs are perpendicular to the surface owing to the competition between the attractive interactions and the topological constrains of SRPs. For the attractive surface, adsorption ability of SRPs decreases with the increase of chain stiffness K-b because disk-like conformations hinder more monomers to be adsorbed on the attractive surfaces, which is different completely from semiflexible linear polymers. Meanwhile, the shape of SRPs near the repulsive surface is oblate, while most of SRPs are prolate near the attractive surface. Moreover, confinements hinder large stack structures to be formed for SRPs, especially for the attractive surface. Our results can help us understand topological constraints for confined SRPs.

Abstract:The conformational behavior of short adsorbed polymer chains is investigated by using the bond-fluctuation model. The interactions between the monomers and the attractive wall are described in the form of ε(z)=−1.0 exp (−z), where z is the distance between the monomer and the wall in the unit of the lattice spacing. Segment orientation, fraction of segments adsorbed, and chain dimensions are measured over a wide range of temperatures. An absorbed layer begins to form at Ta=0.85, where Ta is the adsorption transition temperatures. In our temperature units, Δε/T is a dimensionless quantity. For the dynamics, the auto-correlation function and relaxation time are measured. The auto-correlation can be described by a stretched exponential form and the relaxation time extracted from it starts to increase dramatically with a Vogel–Fulcher behavior at a temperature of T2=0.2.

Abstract:An off-lattice dynamics Monte Carlo method is used to study the conformations of self-attractive semiflexible ring chains. The conformations depend mainly on the bending energy b and the self-attractive interaction ε of ring chains, and perfect helical structures are found in self-attractive semiflexible ring chains with the moderate attractive interaction ε. Some monomers of the semiflexible ring chains wrap around the linearly aligned monomers and the size of helix is independent of chain length of ring chains. Coil-helix-globule transition occurs when the self-attractive interaction increases within semiflexibe ring chains, and the phase transition is attributed to the competition among the configurational entropy, the bending energy, and the self-attractive interaction. This study can help us understand the effects of topological constraints on the conformations and dynamical behaviors of polymer chains, and the importance of chain stiffness in biological systems and in the dynamics of DNA and protein folding.
Conformational structures and thermodynamic properties of compact polymer chains confined between two parallel plane boundaries

Abstract:In this paper, the authors investigated the adsorption phenomenon of compact chains confined between two parallel plane boundaries using a pruned-enriched Rosenbluth method. The authors considered three cases with different adsorption energies of epsilon = 0, -1, and -3 (in units of k(B)T) for the confined compact chains of different chain lengths N, respectively. Several parameters were employed to describe the size and shape of compact chain, and some special behaviors in the conformational structures were investigated for the first time. For example, the size and shape of confined compact chains undergo distinct changes in the adsorption cases of epsilon = - 1 and -3, and pass through the maximum values at the characteristic distances D,. The authors found that this characteristic distance D-c could be scaled as D-c similar to (N + 1)(v) (v = 0.56 +/- 0.01) in the case of epsilon = -3. In addition, the microstructures of chains were investigated, and several significant results were obtained by analyzing the segment density distribution and the mean fractions of segment in tails, trains, bridges, and loops structures. On the other hand, the thermodynamic properties were also investigated for the confined compact chains, such as average energy per bond, Helmholtz free energy per bond, and elastic force per bond. Results show that elastic forces f have different behaviors in three cases, indicating that it is not necessary to exert an external force on the boundaries in the nonadsorption case. At the same time, the average contact energy of compact chain obviously changes when the distance between the two parallel boundaries D increases, which is similar to those of the size and shape parameters. The authors also conclude that these thermodynamic properties of compact chains depend strongly on not only the adsorption energies but also the chain lengths and the confined condition. In addition, several results of the conformational and thermodynamic parameters, such as the segment density distribution and free energy, were compared with the results from the self-consistent field theory. Aggregation–Dispersion Transition for Nanoparticles in Semiflexible Ring Polymer Nanocomposite Melts

Abstract:By employing molecular dynamics simulations, we explored the conformation transition of nanoparticles (NPs) in semiflexible ring polymer nanocomposite melts. A novel aggregation–dispersion transition for NPs in ring polymer nanocomposites occurs when the bending energy of ring chains increases. The conformations of flexible ring chains near NPs are radial distribution, and the entropic depletion interactions between a pair of NPs in flexible ring polymer nanocomposite melts are attractive, however, the rod-like ring chains wrap around the NPs and the entropic depletion interactions between NPs in rod-like ring polymer melts are repulsive. The aggregation-dispersion transition for NPs induced by chain topology in polymer nanocomposites can provide a new access to achieve miscibility in producing high-performance polymer–nanoparticle composites by simply varying the topological structure of polymers.

Abstract:The phase behavior of a single polyethylene chain confined between two adsorption walls is investigated by using molecular dynamics simulations. In the free space, it is confirmed in our calculation that the isolated polymer chain exhibits a disordered coil state at high temperatures, and collapses into a condensed state at low temperatures, that is, the coil-to-globule transition, and the finite chain length effects are considered since the critical region depends on chain lengths. When the chain is confined between two attractive walls, however, the equilibrium properties not only depend on the chain length but also depend on the adsorption energy and the confinement. Mainly, we focus on the influence of polymer chain length, confinement, and adsorption interaction on the equilibrium thermodynamic properties of the polyethylene chains. Chain lengths of N = 40, 80, and 120 beads, distances between the two walls of D = 10, 20, 30, 50, and 90 A, and adsorption energies of w = 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, 6.5, and 8.5 kcal/mol are considered here. By considering the confinement-adsorption interactions, some new folding structures are found, that is, the hairpin structure for short chain of N = 40 beads, and the enhanced hairpin or crystal like structures for long chains of N = 80 and 120 beads. The results obtained in our simulations may provide some insights into the phase behaviors of confined polymers, which can not be obtained by previous studies without considering confinement-adsorption interactions. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Conformational landscape of long semiflexible linear and ring polymers near attractive surfaces

Abstract:Conformations of a crowded neutral semiflexible polymer under confinement near an attractive wall are studied via coarse-grained simulations. We study the effects of the interplay of the length of the polymer, bending rigidity, and the repulsive crowder density on such equilibrium semiflexible polymer conformations. The length of the polymer dictates the number of distinct conformations of the adsorbed semiflexible polymer, suggesting that previous studies of short polymers are limited. The crowder density is shown to effectively reduce the bending rigidity of the polymers and at the highest crowder density considered, a crumpled wall-adsorbed polymer conformation is seen regardless of the semiflexibility. In addition, we study the role of the topology of the semiflexible polymer by comparing the results of linear semiflexible polymers with those of ring polymers. The conformational landscape of crowded ring polymers shows less diversity than that of a linear polymer and crowders are seen to affect the ring polymers differently than their linear counterparts.

Abstract:Elastic behaviors of single polymer chains adsorbed on the attractive surface are first investigated using Monte Carlo simulation method based on the bond fluctuation model. We investigate the chain size and shape of adsorbed chains, such as mean-square radius of gyration S2, mean-square bond length b2, shape factors sf(i) and delta*, and the orientation of chain segments P2, to illuminate how the shape of polymer chains changes during the process of tensile elongation. There are some special behaviors of the chain size and shape at the beginning of elongation, especially for strong attraction interaction. For example, mean fraction of adsorbed segments decreases abruptly in the region of small elongation ratio and then decreases slowly with increasing elongation ratio. In fact, the chain size and shape also changes abruptly for small elongation ratio with strong attraction interaction. Some thermodynamics properties are also investigated here. Average Helmholtz free energy increases fast for elongation ratio lambda<1.15, especially with strong attraction, and increases slowly for lambda>1.15. Similar behaviors are obtained for average energy per bond. Elastic force (f ) and energy contribution to force (f(U)) are also studied, and we find that elastic force decreases abruptly for lambda<1.15, and there is a minimum of elastic force for strong attraction interaction, then increases very slowly with increasing elongation ratio. However, there are different behaviors for weak attraction interaction. For energy contribution to force (f(U)), there is a maximum value for strong attraction interaction in the region of lambda<1.15. Some comparisons with the atomic force microscopy experiments are also made. These investigations may provide some insights into the elastic behaviors of adsorbed polymer chains.

When the chain is adsorbed on an attractive surface, however, the equilibrium properties may not only depend on chain length but also depend on the adsorption energy. For short chain of N = 40 monomers, a coil-to-globule transition is found for weak adsorption energy of w = 2.5 kcal/mol, but the critical temperature is lower than the free chain, and for strong adsorptions of w = 3.5 and 4.5 kcal/mol, the structures at low temperatures are adsorbed hairpin like, so we may call the transition process coil-to-hairpin transition. For long chains of N = 80 monomers and N = 120 monomers, the critical regions are the same for the free chains both at T = 265 K, and for the adsorption energies of w = 2.5, 3.5, and 4.5 kcal/mol, the curves of the beat capacities are smooth when T > 200 K, and while T < 200 K, the values of the heat capacities decrease as the temperatures decreasing, so the transition may be from loose globular structures to compact globular structures, and for more stronger adsorption energy of w = 6.5 and 8.5 kcal/mol, the critical regions are obvious and they are coil-to-crystal like transitions. Abstract:The effects of chain topology on the conformational and dynamic properties of substrate-supported ring and linear polymer films were investigated by molecular dynamics simulations. The study reveals that the adsorbed ring polymer chains exhibit stronger adsorbability but less deformation than the linear ones. This results in a slower desorption of ring chains in a short time. However, over a long time, the desorption rate of the ring chain is larger because of the faster diffusion of the ring chain in bulk. In addition, the non-adsorbed chains in the interface region also exhibit obvious deformation and suppressed diffusivity due to the interchain interaction between non-adsorbed chains and adsorbed ones. The suppression degree of the diffusivity is approximately the same for both films. The possible underlying physics is that the interchain interaction between non-adsorbed chains and adsorbed ones in the linear polymer film is overall stronger, but each non-adsorbed ring chain experiences stronger interchain interactions with the adsorbed chains. Results show that tails in the linear polymer film and loops in the ring polymer film play an important role in the interchain interaction.

Selective adsorption behavior of polymer at the polymer–nanoparticle interface

Abstract:Coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations are used to investigate the adsorption behavior of monodisperse and bidisperse polymer chains on the nanoparticle (NP) surface at various polymer-NP interactions, chain lengths, and stiffness. At a strong polymer-NP interaction, long chains preferentially occupy interfacial region and squeeze short chains out of the interfacial region. Semiflexible chains with proper stiffness wrap NPs dominantly in a helical fashion, whereas fully flexible chains constitute the surrounding matrix. As chain stiffness increases, the results of the preferential adsorption are the opposite. The chain-length or chain-stiffness-induced selective adsorption behavior of polymer chains in the polymer-NP interfacial region relies on a delicate competition between entropic and enthalpic contributions to the total free energy. These results could provide insights into polymer-NP interfacial adsorption behavior and guide the design of high-performance nanocomposites. (C) 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
Adsorption of Short Two-Dimensional Compact Chains

Abstract:Short two-dimensional compact chains adsorbed on the attractive surface at different temperatures were investigated by using the enumeration calculation method. First we investigate the chain size and shape of adsorbed chains, such as characteristic ratios of mean-square radii of gyration (S-2)(x)/N and (S-2)(y)/N, shape factor (delta), and the orientation of chain bonds (cos(2)theta) to illuminate how the size and shape of adsorbed compact chains change with increasing temperatures. There are some special behaviors for the chain size and shape at low temperature, especially for strong attraction interaction. In the meantime, adsorbed compact chains have different behaviors from general adsorbed polymer chains. Some thermodynamics properties are also discussed here. Heat capacity changes non-monotonously, first increases and then reduces. The transition temperature T-c is nearly 1.0, 1.4, 2.0 and 4.2 (in the unit of T-o) for the case of epsilon = 0, - 1, -2 and -4 (in the unit of kT(o)), respectively. Average energy per bond increases while average Helmholtz free energy per bond decreases with increasing temperatures. From these two thermodynamics parameters we can also get another transition temperature T-c', and it is close to 0.7, 1.1, 1.5 and 3.4 for epsilon = 0, - 1, -2, and -4, respectively. Therefore, T-c is greater than T-c' under the same condition. These investigations may provide some insights into the thermodynamics behaviors of adsorbed protein-like chains.

The polymer, which is not explicitly anchored at the surface, experiences a hierarchy of phase transitions between conformations binding and non-binding with the substrate. We discuss the phase diagram in the temperature-solubility plane and highlight the transition ``path'' through the free-energy landscape.

Polymer Chain Adsorption on a Solid Surface: Scaling Arguments and Computer Simulations

Abstract:We examine the phase transition of polymer adsorption as well as the underlying kinetics of polymer binding from dilute solutions on a structureless solid surface. The emphasis is put on the properties of regular multiblock copolymers, characterized by block size M and total length N as well as on random copolymers with quenched composition p of sticky and neutral segments. The macromolecules are modeled as coarse-grained bead-spring chains subject to a short-ranged surface adhesive potential. Phase diagrams, showing the variation of the critical threshold for single chain adsorption in terms of M and p are derived from scaling considerations in agreement with results from computer experiment. Using both scaling analysis and numerical data from solving a system of coupled Master equations, we demonstrate that the phase behavior at criticality, and the adsorption kinetics may be adequately predicted and understood, in agreement with the results of extensive Monte Carlo simulations. Derived analytic expressions for the mean fraction of adsorbed segments as well as for Probability Distribution Functions of the various structural building blocks (i.e., trains, loops, tails) at time t during the chain attachment process are in good agreement with our numeric experiments and provide insight into the mechanism of polymer adsorption.

Abstract:We study the problem of adsorption and collapse transition of a linear polymer chain situated in a fractal container represented by a four-simplex lattice and interacting with a surface-adsorbed linear polymer chain. The adsorbed chain monomers act as pinning sites for the polymer chain. This problem has been solved exactly using real space renormalization group transformation. The resulting phase diagram and critical exponents are given.

Abstract:We have studied the adsorption of an ideal long polymer chain between a rough surface and a flat surface. The two surfaces are basically parallel to each other and penetrable for the polymer chain. The rough surface is modeled as a sinusoidal grating and the chain is assumed to be long enough so at the ground state dominance is tenable. By solving the diffusion equation for a polymer chain in an external field, we have investigated the related eigenvalue problem and obtained the ground state energy (the lowest confinement energy) of the system. The monomer density distributions on the two surfaces are obtained and their relations to the four relevant characteristic lengths: the separation between the two surfaces h, the confinement thickness D, the surface roughness amplitude z(0) and the grating wavelength lambda, are discussed.
Transitions of tethered polymer chains: A simulation study with the bond fluctuation lattice model

Abstract:A polymer chain tethered to a surface may be compact or extended, adsorbed or desorbed, depending on interactions with the surface and the surrounding solvent. This leads to a rich phase diagram with a variety of transitions. To investigate these transitions we have performed Monte Carlo simulations of a bond fluctuation model with Wang-Landau and umbrella sampling algorithms in a two-dimensional state space. The simulations' density-of-states results have been evaluated for interaction parameters spanning the range from good- to poor-solvent conditions and from repulsive to strongly attractive surfaces. In this work, we describe the simulation method and present results for the overall phase behavior and for some of the transitions. For adsorption in good solvent, we compare with Metropolis Monte Carlo data for the same model and find good agreement between the results. For the collapse transition, which occurs when the solvent quality changes from good to poor, we consider two situations corresponding to three-dimensional (hard surface) and two-dimensional (very attractive surface) chain conformations, respectively. For the hard surface, we compare tethered chains with free chains and find very similar behavior for both types of chains. For the very attractive surface, we find the two-dimensional chain collapse to be a two-step transition with the same sequence of transitions that is observed for three-dimensional chains: a coil-globule transition that changes the overall chain size is followed by a local rearrangement of chain segments.

Abstract:Elastic behaviors of a single three-dimensional compact chain adsorbed on the attractive surface are investigated using the pruned-enriched-Rosenbluth method (PERM). The size and shape of the chain, such as mean-square end-to-end distance < R-2 >, mean-square radii of gyration < S-2 >(xy) and < S-2 >(z), and shape factor are studied with different adsorption interaction energy and different positions of the chain on which the force is excited. During the elasticity process, the shape factor first decreases with the shape of chains in a sphere, then increases and the chain extends to be a rod shape along the direction of the force. It decreases again, and at the end it remains a constant value. If the chain is far away from the adsorbing surface, all of the conformational properties remain constant, and there would appear the "jump point". On the other hand, some thermodynamic properties such as the average Helmholtz free energy per bond < A >, average energy per bond < U >/N, average attraction energy per bond < U-a >/N, average contact energy per bond < U-c >/N, elastic force f and energy contribution to elastic force f(U) are also calculated during the elasticity process. Different thermodynamic behaviors are obtained when the force acts on different monomers of the chain. Obviously there exist several long plateaus for elastic force f with strong adsorption interaction, which agrees well with experimental results. We also discuss elastic behaviors of compact chains with weak adsorption interaction, which cannot be obtained from experimental methods.
