Abstract:Tb3+ and/or Sm3+ doped NaGdF4 luminescent nanomaterials have been successfully synthesized by an SDS-assisted one-step hydrothermal method. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), photoluminescence (PL) spectra and a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The results show that the synthesized samples are all pure beta-NaGdF4. The as-prepared Tb3+ or Sm3+ doped samples show strong green and yellow emission, originating from the allowed D-5(3)-> F-7(J) (J = 5, 4, 3, 2) and D-5(4)-> F-7(J) (J = 6, 5, 4, 3) transitions of the Tb3+ ions and the (4)G(5/2)-> H-6(5/2), H-6(7/2),H-6(9/2) transition of the Sm3+ ions. Based on the excitation wavelengths, multiple (yellowish green, yellow, white) emissions are obtained by Sm3+ ion co-activated NaGdF4: Tb3+ phosphors. Moreover, an energy transfer from Tb3+ to Sm3+ is observed, which is justified through the luminescence spectra and the fluorescence decay curves. Furthermore, the resonance-type energy transfer from Tb3+ to Sm3+ is demonstrated to occur via the dipole-dipole mechanism. In addition, the obtained samples also exhibit paramagnetic properties at room temperature. It is obvious that these multifunctional Tb3+, Sm3+ co-doped beta-NaGdF4 nanomaterials, with tunable multicolors and intrinsic paramagnetic properties, may have potential application in the fields of full-color displays, biological labels, bioseparation and magnetic resonance imaging.

Abstract:A series of tunable luminescence NaGdF4:Dy3+, Eu3+ nanophosphors have been synthesized for the first time by a one-step hydrothermal method. X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission-scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), X-ray energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy were employed to characterize the samples. Under the excitation of UV light, NaGdF4:Dy3+ and NaGdF4:Eu3+ exhibit the characteristic emissions of Dy3+ (F-4(9/12) -> H-6(15/2), blue and F-4(9/2) -> H-6(13/2), yellow) and Eu3+ (D-5(0) -> F-7(2), red), respectively. It is found that in a Dy3+, Eu3+-codoped NaGdF4 system, the energy is transferred from Dy3+ to Eu3+ by the photoluminescence spectra and faster decay times of the blue emissions from energy donors (Dy3+). Moreover, the energy transfer is efficient and certified to be a resonant type via a quadrupole-quadrupole interaction by comparing the experimental data and theoretical calculation. The corresponding luminescence and energy transfer mechanisms have been proposed in detail. Most interestingly, the white light with varied hues has been obtained in Dy3+ and Eu3+ co-activated NaGdF4 phosphors by utilizing the principle of energy transfer and properly designed activator contents. The results show that the obtained nanophosphors have a promising application in display and lighting fields.

Abstract:Synthesis and luminescence properties of GdF3:Ce3+, Ln(3+) (Ln(3+)=Eu3+, Tb3+, Dy3+, Sm3+) nanocrystals were investigated. The energy transfer efficiencies between Ce3+ ions and Tb3+ ions, Dy3+ ions, Eu3+ ions were relatively higher than that between Ce3+ ions and Sm3+ ions. Multicolor emissions could be obtained using 254 nm light as excitation source. Such multicolor emissions could be used as multicolor bio-label.

Abstract:A series of BaGdF5:Eu3+/Tb3+ orange-green-yellow-white emitting nanophosphors (NPs) were successfully synthesized via hydrothermal method without assistance of any surfactant, catalyst, or template. The nanocrystals are in sphere-like morphology with an average size of approximately 46nm. The quenching concentrations of Eu3+ and Tb3+ single doped BaGdF5 phosphors are 5.5% and 15%, respectively. The tunable color tone can be obtained in Eu3+ and Tb3+ co-doped BaGdF5 phosphors, the strong orange-white and green-yellow emissions can be seen in BaGdF5:5.5%Eu3+, y%Tb3+ and BaGdF5:3.5%Tb3+, x%Eu3+ phosphors, especially. More significantly, we realize the more standard white emission with a CIE chromaticity diagram point at (0.317, 0.321) and a lower correlated color temperature of 6979K in the BaGdF5: 5.5%Eu3+, 4.5%Tb3+ sample. In addition, the energy transfer phenomenon from Tb3+ to Eu3+ ions is clearly observed in Tb3+, Eu3+ co-doped BaGdF5 phosphors and the energy transfer efficiency can reach a maximum of 75%. Moreover, the as-prepared samples exhibit paramagnetic properties at room temperature. This type of multifunctional multicolor emitting nanophosphor has promising applications in the fields of full-color displays, biomedical science, MRI, and so on.

Abstract:Synthesis conditions for preparing [(Ba0.85Ca0.15)(0.995)Nd-0.005](Ti0.9Hf0.1)O-3 (Nd-BCTH) nanopowders by hy-drothermal method were tailored using orthogonal experiment method with three factors and three levels. X-ray diffraction measurement, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, surface aperture adsorption analyzer, ultraviolet-visible spectra, and fluorescence spectrophotometer were used to characterized the synthesized nanopowders. Well dispersed Nd-BCTH nanopowders with excellent crystallization and luminescence properties are obtained at reaction temperature of 200 ?C, 14 mol.L-1 alkali concentration, and 24 h reaction time without adding surfactant. The nanopowders present a pure pseudo-cubic perovskite structure with rhombohedral phase approaching the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) at room temperature, which present nano-sized particles with slight conglomeration. Using 267 nm light exciting, strong photo -luminescent emission peaks are excited at 364 nm, 422 nm and 440 nm in the Nd-BCTH nanopowders, which correlate with the transitions of Nd3+ from D-4(3/2) -> I-4(9/2), D-2(5/2) -> I-4(9/2) and (4)G(11/2) -> I-4(9/2) via two processes of non-radiative relaxation and fluorescent transition, respectively. The CIE1931 chromaticity calculation of the emission peaks and fluorescent photograph show that the Nd-BCTH nanopowders emit indigo blue fluorescent light.

Abstract:In this paper, Ho$$^{3+}$$/Tm$$^{3+}$$/Yb$$^{3+}$$-doped NaGd(MO$$_{4})_{2}$$ phosphors were prepared using the hydrothermal method and the effect of Yb$$^{3+}$$ doping amount on the luminescence properties of these phosphor materials was investigated. NaGd(MO$$_{4})_{2}$$ was characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and spectral analysis. The results showed that Ho$$^{3+}$$/Tm$$^{3+}$$/Yb$$^{3+}$$-doped NaGd(MO$$_{4})_{2}$$ has tetragonal phase structures, and doping with rare-earth ions decreases the cell parameters of NaGd(MO$$_{4})_{2}$$. NaGd(MO$$_{4})_{2}$$:Ho$$^{3}$$/Tm$$^{3+}$$/Yb$$^{3+}$$ generates blue, green, and red lights at 477, 545, and 659 nm, respectively, under an excitation of 980 nm. The emission of these three lights is called a three-photon process. As the doping ratio of Yb$$^{3+}$$ increases, the colour coordinates of samples gradually approach the white region from the red region, enabling NaGd(MO$$_{4})_{2}$$:0.1Ho/1Tm/20Yb to exhibit white emission. Doping with Yb$$^{3 + }$$ increases the energy transfer and quantum efficiencies of NaGd(MO$$_{4})_{2}$$. When the concentration of Yb$$^{3+}$$ reached 30%, the quantum efficiency of NaGd(MO$$_{4})_{2}$$ reached the maximum value of 188.37%. Overall, NaGd(MO$$_{4})_{2}$$:Ho/Tm/Yb has broad application prospects in the field of white lighting.

Abstract:Ho3+ and Tm3+ doped gadolinium molybdate nanocrystals with sensitizer Y b3+ ions have been synthesized by the Pechini method using citric acid and ethylene glycol. Ultrafine uniform crystallites of gadolinium molybdates Gd2(MoO4)3 and Gd2MoO6 are obtained by sintering the precursors at 900 ∘C for 5 h. The particle size and morphology of as-prepared gadolinium molybdates nanocrystals have been investigated with scan and transmission electron microscope. The optical properties, including down- and up-conversion luminescence of crystallines Gd1.78Ho0.02Y b0.2(MoO4)3 (G1-HY ),Gd1.78Ho0.02Y b0.2MoO6 (G2-HY ), and Gd1.78Tm0.02Y b0.2 (MoO4)3 (G1-TY ) were comparatively studied. The dependence of the upconversion luminescence intensity on pump laser power has shown that two-phonon processes are involved in upconversion luminescence of G1-HY and G2-HY, and the emission level 1G4 of Tm3+in G1-TY is populated via three-photon process. They are novel potential biolabels possessing high physical and chemical stability, sufficient upconversion luminescent intensity, and ease of synthesis.

Abstract:Yb3+/Tm3+/Er3+/Ho3+-doped Na0.5Gd0.5WO4 nanocrystals have been fabricated by a facile hydrothermal method. The blue, green and orange upconversion (UC) emissions coming from Yb3+/Tm3+, Yb3+/Er3+, Yb 3+/Ho3+ dopant ions are observed in this study. Bright white luminescence upon 980 nm excitation can be produced via the UC process by tuning the dopant ions Yb3+/Tm3+/Ho3+, which consists of the blue, green and red UC emissions, and they correspond to the transitions 1G4 → 3H4 of Tm3+, 5F4(5S2) → 5I8, and 5F5 → 5I8 of Ho3+ ions, respectively. The UC mechanisms and temperature dependent UC luminescence were also discussed.

Abstract:Ln(3+)-doped fluoride is a far efficient material for realizing multicolor emission, which plays an important part in full-color displays, biolabeling and MRI. However, studies on the multicolor tuning properties of Ln(3+)-doped fluoride are mainly concentrated on a complicated process using three or more dopants and the principle of energy transfer mechanism is still unclear. Herein, multicolor tunable emission is successfully obtained only by co-doping with Tb(3+) and Eu(3+) ions in β-NaGdF4 submicrocrystals via a facile hydrothermal route. Our work reveals that various emission colors can be obtained and tuned from red, orange-red, pink and blue-green to green under single excitation energy via co-doping Tb(3+) and Eu(3+) with rationally changed Eu(3+)/Tb(3+) molar ratio due to the energy transfer between Tb(3+) and Eu(3+) ions in the β-NaGdF4 host matrix. Meanwhile, the energy transfer mechanism in β-NaGdF4: x Eu(3+)/y Tb(3+) (x+y=5 mol%) submicrocrystals is investigated. Our results evidence the potential of the dopants' distribution density as an effective way for analyzing energy transfer and multicolor-controlled mechanism in other rare earth fluoride luminescence materials. Discussions on the multicolor luminescence under a certain dopant concentration based on single host and wavelength excitation are essential toward the goal of the practical applications in the field of light display systems and optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Nanorod-like Ca 5 (PO 4 ) 3 (OH): xEu 3+ , yTb 3+ (x + y = 12 mol%) phosphors with multicolor tunable emission were synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method. The structure, morphology and luminescent properties of samples were studied by XRD, EDS, FT-IR, SEM, TEM and PL. The luminescent results demonstrate the existence of energy transfer between Tb 3+ and Eu 3+ in the Tb 3+ , Eu 3+ co-doped sample, and the energy transfer mechanism from Tb 3+ to Eu 3+ in the phosphors were studied. When appropriately modulating the Tb 3+ /Eu 3+ doping concentration, various emission colors can be obtained and tuned from yellow-green, yellow, and orange to red through single excitation energy.

Abstract:Well-crystalline β-NaYF4:Yb3+, Ho3+, Tm3+ nanoparticles were synthesized by sol–gel method using isopropyl alcohol [(CH3)2CHOH] as a complexing agent. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopic analysis and fluorescence spectrum analysis methods. Under the excitation of 980 nm laser diode (LD), the samples displayed bright upconversion luminescence (UCL), which was generated from the energy level transition of Ho3+ and Tm3+ ions. With the increase of Tm3+, Ho3+ and Yb3+-doping concentration, the UCL intensity of blue, green and red light emission of the samples varied. Calculation of the CIE color coordinate of the β-NaYF4:Yb3+, Ho3+, Tm3+ nanoparticles revealed that with the adjustment of Tm3+, Ho3+ and Yb3+ doping concentration and the excitation power of 980 nm LD, the multi-color UCL can be realized. Approximately single red light output with the CIE color coordinate of x = 0.545, y = 0.306 and white light output with the CIE color coordinate of x = 0.325, y = 0.320 can be obtained in the synthesized β-NaYF4: Yb3+, Ho3+, Tm3+ nanoparticles.

Abstract:We report upconversion multicolor tuning based on uniform -NaYF4:Yb/Tm/Er nanoparticles. The as-synthesized nanoparticles with an average diameter of 25nm are well dispersed in a wide range of nonpolar solvents including hexane, cyclohexane, dichloromethane, and toluene. These nanoparticles show intense upconversion emissions and the color output can be precisely modulated by adjusting activator ratios of Tm3+ to Er3+. Dopant-concentration dependent emission properties of the triply doped particle system are also investigated. In addition, we demonstrate that these nanoparticles can be readily transferred to polar solvents such as ethanol and water by growing a thin silica layer (10nm) around the particles, providing potential applications in biological labeling and imaging.
Investigation on Upconversion Luminescence Properties of Gd2O3: Ho3+/Yb3+/Tm3+nanotubes

Abstract:Lanthanide doped oxides nano materials have novel optical, physical and structural properties. Cubic Ho3+-Yb3+-Tm3+ co-doped Gd2O3 nanotubes are synthetize by a simple wet-chemical route at low temperature and ambient pressure followed by subsequent annealing heat treatment in muffle furnace. Nanotubes are formed by adjusting the pH value of reacting solution. The introduction of Yb3+ leads to strong visible upconversion luminescence and change the intensity ratio of the green, blue and red luminescence. In trichromatic laser display, research of how to enhance blue light is in the bottleneck period. In the experiment, the blue emission has been successfully improved. In certain doping ratio, distinct enhancement of blue emission and obvious degradation of green light have been observed, which is discussed in detail. X-Ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and upconversion (UC) emission spectra are used to characterize the sample. Strong and adjusted upconversion luminescence determine that the nano material is a potential candidate for applications of biological probe, color displays, lighting and photonics.

Abstract:Tm(3+), Dy(3+), and Eu(3+) codoped NaGd(WO4)2 phosphors were prepared by a facile hydrothermal process; they were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS), photoluminescence spectra, and fluorescence lifetime. The results show that the novel octahedral microcrystals with a mean side length of 2 μm are obtained. Under the excitation of ultraviolet, individual RE(3+) ion (Tm(3+), Dy(3+), and Eu(3+)) activated NaGd(WO4)2 phosphors exhibit excellent emission properties in their respective regions. Moreover, when codoping Dy(3+) and Eu(3+)/Tm(3+) in the single component, the energy migration from Dy(3+) to Eu(3+) has been demonstrated to be a resonant type via a dipole-quadrupole mechanism as well as that from Tm(3+) to Dy(3+) ions, of which the critical distance (R(Dy-Eu)) is calculated to be 11.08 Å. More significantly, in the Tm(3+), Dy(3+), and Eu(3+) tridoped NaGd(WO4)2 phosphors, the energy migration of Tm(3+)-Dy(3+)-Eu(3+), utilized for sensitizing Eu(3+) ions besides compensating the red component at low Eu(3+) doping concentration, has been discussed first. In addition, under 365 nm near-ultraviolet radiation (nUV), the color-tunable emissions in octahedral NaGd(WO4)2 microcrystals are realized by giving abundant blue, green, white, yellow, and red emissions, especially warm white emission, and could be favorable candidates in full-color phosphors for nUV-LEDs.

Abstract:Monodisperse Y2O3: Er3+/Yb3+/Tm3+ nanoparticles with various dopant concentrations have been synthesized successfully by a homogeneous precipitation method. Their phase structures and surface morphologies have been characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The diversities of upconversion luminescence spectra and CIE coordinates of prepared samples are investigated in detail at room temperature under 980 nm excitation. Through adjusting the concentrations of Yb3+, Tm3+ and Er3+ ions, three upconversion emission bands in red, green and blue region could be tunable to achieve the color of interest and near white light emission can be obtained in the tri-doped Y2O3 nanoparticles for a variety of application. Abstract:A series of Gd 1 – x – y Eu x Tb y AlO 3 ( x = 0.01, 0.03, 0.05, 0.07 mol, y = 0.03 mol) tunable color emanating phosphors were synthesized by simplistic low temperature solution combustion process at 600°C. The X-ray powder diffraction and Rietveld refinement analysis confirmed the formation of single-phased co-doped nanophosphor at 1000°C. The synthesized nanophosphors were crystallized in orthorhombic crystal system having P nma (62) space group. The morphological and photoluminescence characteristics of Gd 1 – x – y Eu x Tb y AlO 3 phosphors were validated using field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, excitation, and emission spectra studies. The optical band gap values of co-doped nanocrystalline phosphors were also evaluated. The detailed analysis of excitation and emission spectra of synthesized nanophosphors revealed that Tb 3+ effectively sensitized Eu 3+ ion and the energy transfer can be controlled by carefully adjusting the amounts of Eu 3+ to achieve color-tunable emission. The non-radiant energy loss phenomenon was observed at x = 0.05(Eu 3+ ) in Gd 1 – x – 0.03 AlO 3 : x Eu 3+ , 0.03Tb 3+ phosphors. Commission International de I'Eclairage 1931 color coordinates ( x , y ) of co-doped samples have been extracted from emission spectra avail of photoluminescent data. The result suggested that hue could have been vigilant in greenish, orangish red and dark red color region with divergences in Eu 3+ ( x = 0, 0.01, 0.03, 0.05, 0.07). Other pertinent photometric assets, i.e. correlated color temperature and color purity of synthesized co-doped nanocrystalline materials were determined as well. This study advances understanding of rare earth ion co-doping effects, also providing new design opportunities for enhanced luminous materials for usage in light emitting diodes, lasers, displays, and solid-state technological innovations.

Abstract:In this paper, the Gd2O3:Eu3+, Tb3+ phosphors with different doping concentrations of Eu3+ and Tb3+ ions were prepared by a hydrothermal method for nanocrystals and the solid-phase method for microcrystals. The interaction of the doped ions with different concentrations and the luminescent properties of the nanocrystals and microcrystals were studied systematically. Their structure and morphology of Gd2O3:Eu3+, Tb3+ phosphors were analyzed by means of X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The photoluminescence (PL) properties of Gd2O3:Eu3+, Tb3+ phosphors were also systematically investigated. The results indicated that when the concentration of doped Eu3+ was fixed at 1 mol.%, the emission intensity of Eu3+ ions was degenerating with Tb3+ content increasing, while when the Tb3+ content was fixed at 1 mol.%, the emission intensity of Tb3+ ions reached a maximum when the concentration of Eu3+ was 2 mol.%, implying that the energy transfer from Eu3+ to Tb3+ took place. In addition, Tb3+ could inspire blue-green light and the Eu3+ could inspire red light. Therefore co-doping systems by controlling the doping concentration and the hosts are the potential white emission materials.

Abstract:A series of Dy(3+),Tb(3+) and Eu(3+) singly, doubly or triply doped BaGdF5 phosphors were synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method with l-arginine, and their energy transfer, migrations and multicolored luminescence properties were investigated in detail. The as-prepared Dy(3+),Tb(3+) or Eu(3+) doped samples showed strong blue, green and red emission, respectively. Different hues of green and red light were obtained by co-doped Dy(3+),Tb(3+) and Tb(3+),Eu(3+) in the BaGdF5 host, respectively. More significantly, in the Dy(3+),Tb(3+),Eu(3+) tri-doped BaGdF5 phosphors, colors changed from yellow green to orange red by adjusting the doping concentration of Eu(3+). Energy migrations from Dy(3+) to Tb(3+) and from Tb(3+) to Eu(3+) are reported in detail. Furthermore, the obtained samples exhibit paramagnetic properties at room temperature and low temperature. It is obvious that these Dy(3+), Tb(3+), Eu(3+) singly or doubly or triply doped BaGdF5 nanomaterials with tunable multicolored luminescence properties may have potential applications in the fields of full-color displays, biological labels and bio-separation.
