Abstract:The 1950s belong to one of the most glorious decades for geometry and topology.A group of young mathematicians established a wealth of great theorems, made ground breaking discoveries, and created a new era in mathematics.These men leave their names in the history of mathematics.Hodge theory was just completed by Weyl and Kodaira in 1941.By exploiting the Chern characteristic classes introduced by Shiing-Shen Chern, Hirzebruch proved the signature theorem and the Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch theorem in algebraic geometry in 1956.The engineer-turn-mathematician Bott proved the periodicity theorem on homotopy groups.These results would soon inspire Atiyah and Singer to prove their index theorem.Serre calculated the homotopy groups of spheres in algebraic topology using Leray spectral sequence, wrote the famous GAGA in algebraic geometry using sheaf theory, and systematically introduced complex analysis to algebraic geometry.Kodaira proved his famous embedding theorem, and developed deformation theory of complex manifolds.Later, Milnor found the first exotic sphere in dimension 7 and Nash proved his isometric embedding theorem for Riemannian manifolds.These great results are like stars shining in the sky.On Amsterdam's 1954 International Congress of Mathematicians, Kodaira and Serre were awarded Fields medals.Both of their works merged complex analysis, differential geometry and algebraic geometry in a miraculous fashion.As Weyl said in his famous encomium: "You reached heights of which I never dreamt… It shows that the old gnarled tree of mathematics is still full of sap and life."On the very occasion, Eugenio Calabi, a 31-year-old Italian-American mathematician, wrote down his famous conjecture on a sheet of paper during his talk, "For any (1,1)-form R in the first Chern class of a compact Kähler manifold, there exists a unique Kähler metric whose Ricci form is equal to R." Abstract:It is a great honor for me to give this talk in honor of my mentor and my old friend Is Singer. We have known each other since 1973. He had a deep influence in my mathematical thinking and my career. When I first met him at a big conference in geometry in Stanford, my advisor Chern told me that Is wanted to see me. I was somewhat nervous as Is is a big name in geometry. To my surprise, Is just smiled and said that he just wanted to get to know me. But he did something for me then that neither of us realized at the time. It was his proposal to invite Robert Geroch to explain the mathematics of general relativity to geometers during that conference. Geroch explained the positive mass conjecture for a special case in very simple terms. It was fascinating as nobody knew how to approach this problem, despite its elegance. I kept this problem in mind until 1978, when I visited Berkeley for one year, again at the invitation of Chern and of Is. In that year, I solved the first major part of the positive conjecture with Richard Schoen. Before this visit, Is invited me to visit MIT for a month during 1976, after I solved the Calabi conjecture. During that period, Is was very busy with a family issue. Nonetheless, we had dinner and he described to me what he heard in Stony Brook when he visited the physicists there. The main question was concerning self-dual instantons. Although I did not work on it immediately, it is such an interesting subject, that I finally worked on the higher dimensional generalization of it known today as the Hermitian Yang-Mills connections. In 1987, Is thought that it was important for mathematicians working on physics related issues to have the ability to obtain funding to hire postdoctoral fellows. He was able to work this out with the Department of Energy. And I have benefitted much by his efforts on this. I was able to hire postdoctoral fellows who earned physics degrees. Having them around have been really useful for my career.

Abstract:It is a great honor to be invited for this important occasion. The first time I had met Prof. Yang was in the fall term of 1971 when he gave a series of public lectures at Stony Brook. I was deeply impressed by the intuitive power of physics as described by the great master. In the following years, I saw the impact of Yang–Mills theory on mathematics. It was exciting for a geometer to study the effect of physical intuition in our field and what we could do for physics in return. I spent the next thirty years exploring such an interaction. It was a fruitful research: from general relativity, to gauge theory and to string theory. The influence of Prof. Yang is very deep and I am grateful to him. In this note, I will explain such a personal experience. The choice of topic is therefore rather subjective. The concept of space (or space-time) has evolved according to our ability in mathematics and our understanding of nature. In the ancient times, figures were constructed from line segments, planes and spheres (or quadrics like the parabola). Beautiful theorems in plane and solid geometry were proved by the Greeks. The most fundamental theorem is the Pythagorean theorem. Even modern geometry demands that this theorem holds infinitesimally. The fact that there are only five platonic solids had been a fascinating statement for mathematicians, philosophers and physicists (they are tetrahedron, octahedron, cube, icosahedron's, dodecahedron).Although Archimedes had applied the concept of infinite process to geometry, it was not until the full development of Calculus (Newton, Leibniz.) that we had the tools to study curved space. Abstract:One of the most eminent of contemporary mathematicians, Shing-Tung Yau has received numerous honors, including the 1982 Fields Medal, considered the highest honor in mathematics, for his work in differential geometry. He is known also for his work in algebraic and Kahler geometry, general relativity, and string theory. His influence in the development and establishment of these areas of research has been great. These five volumes reproduce a comprehensive selection of his published mathematical papers of the years 1971 to 1991-a period of groundbreaking accomplishments in numerous disciplines including geometric analysis, Kahler geometry, and general relativity. The editors have organized the contents of this collection by subject area-metric geometry and minimal submanifolds; metric geometry and harmonic functions; eigenvalues and general relativity; and Kahler geometry. Also presented are expert commentaries on the subject matter, and personal reminiscences that shed light on the development of the ideas which appear in these papers.

Abstract:This report investigates general relativity and the Yang-Mills theory in four-dimensional space-time using a common mathematical framework, the Chern--Weil theory for principal bundles. The whole theory is described owing to the fibre bundle with the $GL(4)$ symmetry by twisting several principal bundles with the gauge symmetry. In addition to the principal connection, we introduce the Hodge-dual connection into the Lagrangian to make gauge fields have dynamics independent from the Bianchi identity. We show that the duplex superstructure appears in the bundle when a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-grading operator exists in the total space of the bundle in general. The Dirac operator appears in the secondary superspace using the one-dimensional Clifford algebra, and it provides topological indices from the Atiyah--Singer index theorem. Though the topological index is usually discussed in the elliptic-type manifold, this report treats it in the hyperbolic type space-time manifold using a novel method, namely the $\theta$-metric space. The $\theta$-metric treats the Euclidean and Minkowski spaces simultaneously and defines the topological index in the Minkowski space-time.

Abstract:In this note, we use Chern’s magic form $\Phi _k$ in his famous proof of the Gauss–Bonnet theorem to define a mass for asymptotically flat manifolds. It turns out that the new defined mass is equivalent to the one that we introduced recently by using the Gauss–Bonnet–Chern curvature $L_k$. Moreover, this equivalence implies a simple proof of the equivalence between the ADM mass and the intrinsically defined mass via the Ricci tensor, which was reconsidered by Miao–Tam (Proc Am Math Soc 144:753–761, 2016) and Herzlich (Ann Henri Poincaré 17(12):3605–3617, 2016) very recently.

Existence of Time-like Geodesics in Asymptotically Flat Spacetimes: A Generalized Topological Criterion

Abstract:This paper examines the issue of the existence and nature of time-like geodesics in asymptotically flat spacetimes and proposes a novel generalized topological criterion for the existence of time-like geodesics. Its validity is proved using theorems such as the Jordan-Brouwer Separation Theorem, the Raychaudhuri Equation, and key elements of Differential Geometry. More specifically, the proof primarily hinges on a closed, simply-connected subset of the spacetime manifold and a continuous map, causing a non-trivial induction on the first homology groups, from the boundary of this subset to a unit circle. The mathematical analysis conclusively affirms the presence of these geodesics, intersecting transversally within the said subset of spacetime. Findings underscore these geodesics' significant implications for the structure of asymptotically flat spacetimes, including stability, and hypothetical existence of wormholes. The generalized topological criterion also has implications on the problem of obstructions for the existence of Lorentzian metrics, and Einstein's Constraint Equations. Future research should extend this topological criterion to other classes of spacetimes, including those with non-trivial topologies or non-zero cosmological constants. Also, the criterion's application to study complex dynamical systems, such as gravitational waves or rotating black holes, could offer significant insights.

Nous parcourons un certain nombre de métriques classiques et nouvelles sur les les espaces de modules de surfaces de Riemann hyperboliques et leur propriétés géométriques. Ensuite nous discutons la bonté de Mumford et la bonté généralisée de différentes métriques sur l'espace de modules et leurs invariance de déformation. En combinant avec la négativité de Nakano duale de la métrique de Weil-Peterson nous en tirons différentes conséquences telles que la rigidité infinitésimale, le théorème de Gauss-Bonnet et les calculs de nombres logarithmiques de Chern.

Abstract:We survey the theory of complex manifolds that are related to Riemann surface, Hodge theory, Chern class, Kodaira embedding and Hirzebruch–Riemann–Roch, and some modern development of uniformization theorems, Kähler–Einstein metric and the theory of Donaldson–Uhlenbeck–Yau on Hermitian Yang–Mills connections. We emphasize mathematical ideas related to physics. At the end, we identify possible future research directions and raise some important open questions.
Torsion and Chern-Simons gravity in 4D space-times from a Geometrodynamical four-form

Abstract:The space-time geometry in any inertial frame is described by the line-element $ds^2= \eta_{\mu \nu} dx^\mu dx^\nu$. Now, not only the Minkowski metric $\eta_{\mu \nu} $ is invariant under proper Lorentz transformations, the totally antisymmetric Levi-Civita tensor $e_{\mu \nu \alpha \beta} $ too is. In general relativity (GR), $\eta_{\mu \nu} $ of the flat space-time gets generalized to a dynamical, space-time dependent metric tensor $ g_{\mu \nu} $ that characterizes a curved space-time geometry. In the present study, it is put forward that the flat space-time Levi-Civita tensor gets elevated to a dynamical four-form field $\tilde {w} $ in curved space-time manifolds, i.e. $e_{\mu \nu \alpha \beta} \rightarrow w_{\mu \nu \alpha \beta} (x) = \phi (x) \ e_{\mu \nu \alpha \beta} $, so that $\tilde {w} = {1\over {4!}} \ w_{\mu \nu \rho \sigma} \ \tilde{d} x^\mu \wedge \tilde{d} x^\nu \wedge \tilde{d} x^\rho \wedge \tilde{d} x^\sigma$. It is shown that this geometrodynamical four-form field extends GR by leading naturally to a torsion in the theory as well as to a Chern-Simons gravity. It is demonstrated that the scalar-density $\phi (x)$ associated with $\tilde {w} $ may be used to construct a generalized exterior derivative that converts a p-form density to a (p+1)-form density of identical weight. It is argued that the scalar-density $\phi (x)$ associated with $\tilde {w}$ corresponds to an axion-like pseudo-scalar field in the Minkowski space-time, and that it can also masquerade as dark matter. Thereafter, we provide a simple semi-classical analysis in which a self-gravitating Bose-Einstein condensate of such ultra-light pseudo-scalars leads to the formation of a supermassive black hole. A brief analysis of propagation of weak gravitational waves in the presence of $\tilde{w} $ is also considered in this article.

A rigidity theorem for asymptotically flat static manifolds and its applications

Abstract:In this paper, we study the Minkowski-type inequality for asymptotically flat static manifolds $(M^{n}, g)$ with boundary and with dimension $ n < 8$ that was establishedby McCormick. First, we show that any asymptotically flat static $(M^{n},g)$ which achieves the equality and has CMC or equipotential boundary is isometric to a rotationally symmetric region of the Schwarzschild manifold. Then, we apply conformal techniques to derive a new Minkowski-type inequality for the level sets of bounded static potentials. Taken together, these provide a robust approach to detecting rotational symmetry of asymptotically flat static systems. As an application, we prove global uniqueness of static metric extensions for the Bartnik data induced by both Schwarzschild coordinate spheres and Euclidean coordinate spheres in dimension $n < 8$ under the natural condition of Schwarzschild stability. This generalizes an earlier result of Miao. We also establish uniqueness for equipotential photon surfaces with small Einstein-Hilbert energy. This is interesting to compare with other recent uniqueness results for static photon surfaces and black holes.

Abstract:We use planar coordinates as well as hyperbolic coordinates to separate the de Sitter spacetime into two parts. These two ways of cutting the de Sitter give rise to two different spatial infinities. For spacetimes which are asymptotic to either half of the de Sitter spacetime, we are able to provide definitions of the total energy, the total linear momentum, the total angular momentum, respectively. And we prove two positive mass theorems, corresponding to these two sorts of spatial infinities, for spacelike hypersurfaces whose mean curvatures are bounded by certain constant from above.

Abstract:The paper consists of two parts. In the first part, by using the Gauss–Bonnet curvature, which is a natural generalization of the scalar curvature, we introduce a higher order mass, the Gauss–Bonnet–Chern mass m^ℍ_k , for asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds and show that it is a geometric invariant. Moreover, we prove a positive mass theorem for this new mass for asymptotically hyperbolic graphs and establish a relationship between the corresponding Penrose type inequality for this mass and weighted Alexandrov–Fenchel inequalities in the hyperbolic space ℍ^n . In the second part, we establish these weighted Alexandrov–Fenchel inequalities in ℍ^n for any horospherical convex hypersurface Σ ∫ _Σ V σ _2k-1 dμ≥ C_n-1^2k-1ω _n-1( ( |Σ |/ω _n-1) ^n/k(n-1)+( |Σ |/ω _n-1) ^n-2k/k(n-1)) ^k, where σ _j is the j -th mean curvature of Σ⊂ℍ^n , V=cosh r and |Σ | is the area of Σ . As an application, we obtain an optimal Penrose type inequality for the new mass defined in the first part m_k^ℍ≥1/2^k( ( |Σ |/ω _n-1) ^n/k(n-1)+( |Σ |/ω _n-1) ^n-2k/k(n-1)) ^k, for asymptotically hyperbolic graphs with a horizon type boundary Σ , provided that a dominant energy type condition L̃_k≥ 0 holds. Both inequalities are optimal.
