Abstract:ZnS:Ag/CdS quantum dots (QDs) have been synthesized by a reverse micelle process under ambient environment. Excited by 350 nm, the emission peak of ZnS: Ag/CdS QDs changes from 425 to 625 nm with increasing the thickness of CdS shells. Although the quantum yields of QDs decrease with CdS shells thickening, the luminescent brightness remains stable throughout. Compared with the traditional color-tunable CdSe QDs, the synthesis of ZnS: Ag/CdS QDs is less toxic and more economic. Therefore, this synthesis process can be regarded as an efficient way to fabricate a series of luminescent nanostructures for a variety of applications.

Abstract:In this work, we used Ag- and Mn-doped ZnInS/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) acting as a new generation of nontoxic dual-emission QDs with simultaneous tunable emission wavelengths and dual-emission ratiometric, which makes nontoxic dual-emission QDs with broad zone tunability in the color coordinate. The Ag-doped ZnInS ternary QDs can give rise to largely tunable emission wavelengths from 497 nm to 631 nm. The ratiometric of Ag and Mn dual emissions can be tuned by controlling Ag–Mn and Mn–Mn dopant coupling. With increased Mn doping amount, the increased Ag–Mn dopant coupling leads to increased Mn emission at the expense of lowered Ag emission and Ag fluorescence lifetime. The Mn–Mn coupling can be controlled by using different doping manners: co-doping Ag and Mn in ZnInS core or separate-doping Ag in ZnInS core and Mn in ZnS shell. Compared with co-doping, separate doping has weaker Mn–Mn interactions, an increased Mn irradiative recombination rate constant, and bright Mn photoluminescence.

Abstract:Recently, Cu-doped ternary chalcogenide quantum dots (QDs) have attracted extensive attention due to their large Stokes shift and tunable photoluminescence (PL) behavior in the visible and near-infrared (NIR) spectral range, and particularly for their remarkably lower toxicity than their Cd-based counterparts. However, there still remain material-and fabrication-related obstacles in realizing high-performance Cu-doped QDs, which limit their promising applications in light-emitting devices and bio-labeling. In the present study, we report the facile synthesis of high-qualified Cu-doped Zn-In-Se QDs via a hot injection approach, using a heterogeneous dispersion of Se in octadecene (ODE) as a "green" Se precursor. With variation of the ratios of Zn to In, the obtained Cu-doped Zn-In-Se QDs exhibited composition-tunable PL emissions over the most visible spectral window (ca. 565-710 nm) with a PL quantum yield (QY) up to 38% after coating ZnSe shells, which is the highest one ever reported in this system. Furthermore, we report, for the first time, the exploration of QD light-emitting diodes (QD-LEDs) based on the Cu-doped Zn-In-Se QDs as the active layer, which had a maximum luminance of 320 cd m(-2) and a luminous efficiency (LE) of 0.97 cd A(-1) (at 98 cd m(-2)), suggesting their promising potential for application in optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:With the blooming development of zero-dimensional nanomaterials, I-III-VI alloying quantum dots (QDs) with outstanding photoelectrical properties have emerged to attract much attention as promising environmentally-friendly substitutions for conventional binary Cd-based QDs. In this work, a facile one-pot method was introduced to synthesize unreported quaternary Ag-Cu-Ga-Se/ZnSe (ACGSe/ZnSe) QDs. A relatively high photoluminescence quantum yield (PL QY) of 71.9% and a tunable emission from 510 to 620 nm were successfully achieved. We explored the roles of alloying compositions in ACGSe/ZnSe QDs, inferring that increased Ag proportion would not only lower the V-defect level which leads to the blue shift of emission, but also slow the ZnSe shelling process owing to the larger lattice distortion. At last, the white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) were fabricated with ACGSe/ZnSe QDs as the conversion layer, indicating that the as-prepared QDs are a promising candidate for further applications. Abstract:A novel white light-emitting diode based on a large Stokes shift (~200 nm) and using pure green light-emitting CdSeS quantum dots (QDs) with an Ag/ZnSnO/QDs/spiro-TPD/ITO structure has been fabricated in which ZnSnO and spiro-TPD are served as the electron and hole transport layer, respectively. The large Stokes shift of the CdSeS QDs excludes potentially Förster resonance energy transfer process, which allows spiro-TPD to act as both an emitter and hole transport layer. The devices exhibit a wide EL spectrum consisting of three components: blue emission from spiro-TPD, green emission from QD band–band recombination, and red emission from QD surface-state recombination. We further found that as the intensity ratios among these three components vary with bias the color of the QD light-emitting diodes is tunable. The device displays a good white light-emitting characteristic with CIE coordinates of (0.281, 0.384) at an appropriate bias.

Abstract:Cadmium-free I-III-VI quantum dots (QDs), represented by Cu-In-S (CIS), are widely investigated for their non-toxicity and tunable emission properties. In this work, Zn-Cu-In-S (ZCIS) alloyed QDs were synthesized via a solvothermal approach by heating up a mixture of the corresponding metal precursors and sulphur powder with dodecanethiol in oleylamine media, and the fluorescent intensity was greatly enhanced by coating ZnS (ZS) shell. By changing the ratio of Cu, the as prepared ZCIS-ZS QDs showed composition-tunable photoluminescent (PL) emission over the visible spectral window from about 500nm to 620nm, which is much wider than that of CIS QDs. Moreover, the influence of excitation wavelength, reaction temperature and time on the optical properties of the ZCIS-ZS QDs was also studied. This research provides a feasible and simple approach to prepare ZCIS-ZS QDs with large tunable spectral range on visible region, which could greatly contribute to the development of potential applications due to their non-toxicity and excellent optical properties.

Abstract:Color tunable quantum dots (QDs) based on the Cu, Mn, Ag co-doped ZnInS core and ZnS outer-shell were synthesized by using an eco-friendly method. Core-shell doped QDs with the average size of 3.85 nm were obtained by using a one-pot synthesis followed by a hot injection with n-dodecanethiol (DDT) and oleylamine (OLA) as stabilizers in oil phase. Cu, Mn and Ag ions were introduced as single-dopant or co-dopants during the synthesis, providing an effective means to control the emission color of the QDs. The as-synthesized QDs showed photoluminescence emission ranging from green (530 nm) to near-red (613 nm), adjusted by doping components, dopant concentration, and Zn/In ratio. Importantly, quasi-white emission has been achieved by controlling the concentration of co-doped metal ions (Mn, Cu and Ag). The primary results demonstrated the promising potential of co-doped QDs as alternative materials for future high quality white LED applications.

Abstract:Multinary quantum dots (QDs), owing to the large degree of freedom in their structure and composition, have a wide tunability in their bandgap and show an increased indeterminacy and complexity in their optical properties. In this work, a facile microwave-assisted aqueous route using sodium citrate and thioglycolic acid (TGA) as dual stabilizer was utilized to synthesize Cu-In-S/ZnS (CIS/ZnS) core/shell QDs. The effects of the shell thickness, refluxing time, pH value, temperature, Cu/In ratio and stabilizer on the morphology and optical properties of the CIS/ZnS QDs have been systematically investigated. The results show that the morphology-controllable alloyed CIS/ZnS QDs with tunable emission from 533 nm to 666 nm and long PL lifetime can be obtained by varying the molar ratio of sodium citrate to TGA. The proposed microwave-assisted aqueous synthesis method for alloyed QDs is simple, rapid, with comparatively low reaction temperature. The as-prepared QDs with the size of 3.8 nm are promising materials for lighting and biological applications. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this work, transition metal ion- doped zinc-based quantum dots (QDs) are synthesized via a greener controllable method to avoid the toxicity of the traditional cadmium-based QDs and broaden the tunable emission. Herein, the tunable emission of Cu-doped ZnInS/ZnS core-shell QDs (Cu:ZnInS/ZnS) can cover from 500 to 620nm by varying the Cu dopant concentration from 1 to 20% and the maximum quantum yield can reach 49.8%. Based on the single-doped QDs, Cu,Mn co-doped ZnInS/ZnS core-shell QDs (Cu,Mn:ZnInS/ZnS) with a photoluminance (PL) quantum yield of 30.4% are obtained. All the as-synthesized QDs have the zinc blende structure and the average size is about 3.55nm. Besides, the interaction mechanism between the Cu and Mn dopant luminescence centers is proposed in this work, which is rarely investigated in the previous report. Diffusion priority and energy transfer between these two dopants are supposed to play an important role in the co-doped QDs and Cu ions could affect the splitting of Mn d states. Color coordinates of these doped QDs show the line-tunability from (0.200, 0.397) to (0.408, 0.508) on the Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) chromatic diagram, showing a promising potential in high-quality white light output by integration of these QDs with blue chips.

Abstract:Transition metal ions doping has been an effective method to optimize the optical properties of quantum dots (QDs) and attracted much interest in recent years. In this work, Cu doped InP/ZnS (Cu:InP/ZnS) QDs have been synthesized via a nucleation-doping method and exhibit dual emission which consists of the intrinsic emission and the dopant emission. With the incremental Cu concentration from 0% to 10%, the dopant emission could be largely tuned from 598 to 707 nm. After introducing Ag ions into Cu:InP/ZnS QDs, the photoluminance (PL) intensity of dual emission gets remarkably enhanced with a PL quantum yield (QY) of 79%, while the emission peak positions change marginally. Through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, steady-state and time-resolved PL spectroscopy measurement, it can be concluded that the dopant emission color is mainly dominated by Cu while Ag is conducive to improve the dual emission of Cu and Ag co-doped InP/ZnS QDs. These results would contribute to further understanding dopant-dependent interaction and render this new class of single-phased and dual-emissive QDs a promising future to be applied in white LED.
Air-stable Synthesis of Near-Infrared AgInSe2 Quantum Dots for Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:The synthesis of highly photoluminescent quantum dots (QDs) is critical for QD sensitized solar cells. As a typical I-III-VI compound, AgInSe2 QDs with high quality were often synthesized by the hot-injection method with a stock solution of selenium powder in oleylamine, trioctylphosphine used as capping agent. This work introduces selenium dioxide as a selenium source to synthesize high-quality AglnSe(2) with the tunable composition by a heating-up method in air. The gradient compositions of AglnSe(2) QDs were achieved by the control of the relative feeding ratio of Ag/In precursors. The emission peaks of AglnSe(2) QDs locate between 740 similar to 1080 nm with as longer lifetime as 450 ns, depending on the ratio of Ag/In in AgInSe2. The ligand exchange was adapted to assist adsorption onto the TiO2 photoanode. Under a complete solar illumination, AgInSe2 QDs-sensitized solar cells demonstrated the best power conversion efficiency of 3.31%. The current density-voltage curves of the best solar cells showed that the short circuit current was 18.16 mA.cm(-2), the open-circuit voltage was 0.35 V, and the fill factor was 51%. The improved photoelectric performance of the AglnSe(2) QD is thought as the attribution of theirs enhanced PL lifetime and broader spectral response reaching 1100 nm. This method proposes a new strategy for the synthesis of AglnSe(2) QDs with high quality.

Abstract:Synthesis of internally doped Cu:ZnSe QDs in an aqueous solution still suffers from narrow tunable emissions from the blue to green light window. In this work, we extended the emission window of aqueous Cu:ZnSe QDs to the yellow light window. Our results show that high solution pH, multiple injections of Zn precursors, and nucleation doping strategy are three key factors for preparing yellow emitted Cu:ZnSe QDs. All these factors can depress the reactivity of CuSe nuclei and Zn monomers, promoting ZnSe growth outside CuSe nuclei rather than form ZnSe nuclei separately. With increased ZnSe QD size, the conduction band and nearby trap state energy levels shift to higher energy sites, causing Cu:ZnSe QDs to have a much longer emission.

Abstract:A facile growth-doping method in aqueous solution has been developed to synthesize Cu-doped ZnSe (ZnSe:Cu) QDs by using thioglycolic acid (TGA) as a stabilizer. The effects of the Cu doping concentration, reaction temperature and pH value on the synthesis of ZnSe:Cu QDs were investigated systematically. The as-synthesized ZnSe:Cu QDs with an excellent green emission still belong to a cubic zinc blende crystalline structure, and the average particle size is approximately 3.0 nm. The photoluminescent quantum yield (PLQY) is as high as 20%, and the exciton radiative lifetime is approximately 113.8 ns. Moreover, the patterned ZnSe:Cu QDs thin films have been successfully fabricated by using an inkjet printing method to verify the ability of the potential application to the color conversion. With the assistance of 5.5 pair distributed bragg reflector (DBR) structures, the color coordinate of the ZnSe:Cu QDs thin film excited by the blue LEDs is located at (0.2182, 0.4352) and the intensity of PL peak located at 513 nm reaches to be 45.1%. In addition, the PLQY of color conversion-based ZnSe:Cu QDs thin film is approximately 9.64%. Based on these results, ZnSe:Cu QDs are potentially useful for the fabrication of optoelectronic devices, especially QDs photoluminescence and electroluminescence.

Abstract:Microwave organic phase preparation of AgInS2 quantum dots (QDs) is extremely essential to the large-scale, green and efficient preparation of AgInS2 QDs. Here, commercial glycerol is used as the microwave absorber to prepare AgInS2 QDs in nonpolar organic solvent octadecene at reaction temperature range of 100-180 degrees C. The AgInS2 QDs can be obtained within 15 min and exhibit tunable photoluminescent properties. After decorating by ZnS layer, the prepared AgInS2@ZnS core/shell QDs emitted a bright orange-yellow light under ultraviolet light irradiation, and its quantum yield increased from 13.66% to 33.10%. Moreover, it exhibited excellent spectral tunability among the range of 608.0 nm-549.8 nm with the molar ratios of Zn/AgIn changed from 0 to 3. Finally, a WLED was fabricated by combining AgInS2@ZnS QDs and Y3Al5-xGaxO12:Ce(3+ )phosphors with a blue chip, the color rendering index (CRI), correlated color temperature (CCT), and luminous efficiency (LE) of the device was 87.6, 3361 K, and 58.83 lm/W, respectively, indicating the great application prospect in illumination. The research explores a novel avenue for the fast and efficient synthesis of I-III-VI semiconductor QDs in nonpolar solvent via microwave method.
Facile synthesis of homogeneous CuInS2 quantum dots with tunable near-infrared emission

Abstract:The near-infrared (NIR) and homogeneously emitting CuInS2 quantum dots (QDs) have been successfully prepared by a one-pot thermolysis route using air-stable indium stearate as a precursor/reactant. The CuInS2 QDs exhibit a tunable emission peak in the range of 693-835 nm with a photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield (QY) of up to 8.7%. The QDs with uniform diameter can be assigned to a typical zinc blende structure according to XRD analysis. Time-resolved PL spectroscopy of CuInS2 QDs shows a biexponential trait in which the donor-acceptor recombination (a lifetime of 100-240 nm) occupied 74-92% of the whole PL emission. The type-I structure CuInS2/ZnS core/shell QDs were synthesized in situ for surface passivation, which leads to a dramatic enhancement of PL QY by over six-fold/time (up to 40.1%). The PL decay curve of CuInS2/ZnS QDs retained the biexponential character with a longer lifetime. The as-prepared CuInS2 based QDs with lower toxicity and desirable optical features are good candidates for biomedical fluorescence labelling.

Abstract:Highly emissive semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) with tunable color are valuable in many applications such as solid state lighting and bio-imaging. Herein, we report a facile synthetic method to Au:ZnCdS and Au:ZnCdS/ZnS core/shell QDs with tunable emission color. The highly active Au precursor (HAuCl4) is prevented to be decomposed at high reaction temperature using 1-dodecanethiol (DDT) as the surface ligand. High-quality Au:ZnCdS/ZnS core/shell QDs are prepared and the highest photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield (QY) can achieve 42% by overcoating of ZnS layer over the bare Au:ZnCdS core QDs. Furthermore, through using Au+ ion as the primary dopants and trivalent cation In3+ as co-dopants, the PL QY can be enhanced significantly because compensation of In3+ ion-codoping for the charge imbalance from Au+-doping. This codoping strategy may be applied to other related optical materials to control the optical properties based on our understanding for physical mechanism.

Abstract:The present study reports an aqueous synthesis approach towards Cu-In-Se/ZnS quantum dots with emission in the near-infrared spectral range. The photoluminescence of the dots can be effectively controlled by adjusting the sulfur source, to achieve increased quantum yields (four times higher) and red-shifted emission peaks (from 809 nm to 830 nm).
