Abstract:Femtosecond laser-induced Coulomb explosion of C3H8 is investigated experimentally by means of time-of-flight mass spectrometry at different intensities. The mass spectrum of C3H8 presents much more abundant fragments than obtained through electron-impact ionization. The appearance of intermediate daughter molecular ions with a double-peak structure shows that Coulomb explosion of C3H8 undergoes a two-step process. One C-C bond of the C-3 carbon skeleton breaks first and then the other C-C bond breaks. The ion yields and initial kinetic energy releases of ionic fragments increase with increasing laser intensity. The C2+ and H-2(+) ions exhibit anisotropic angular distributions, with a maximum along the laser polarization vector and a minimum perpendicular to it. The geometric alignment is the main reason for the measured anisotropic angular distributions of ionic fragments. A significant decrease of ionization occurs in circular polarization and elliptical polarization. This fact reveals that field-induced ionization is responsible for the formation mechanism of molecular ions.
Phase- and intensity-dependence of ultrafast dynamics in hydrocarbon molecules in few-cycle laser fields

Abstract:In strong laser fields, sub-femtosecond control of chemical reactions with the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) becomes feasible. We have studied the control of reaction dynamics of acetylene and allene in intense few-cycle laser pulses at 750 nm, where ionic fragments are recorded with a reaction microscope. We find that by varying the CEP and intensity of the laser pulses it is possible to steer the motion of protons in the molecular dications, enabling control over deprotonation and isomerization reactions. The experimental results are compared to predictions from a quantum dynamical model, where the control is based on the manipulation of the phases of a vibrational wave packet by the laser waveform. The measured intensity dependence in the CEP-controlled deprotonation of acetylene is well captured by the model. In the case of the isomerization of acetylene, however, we find differences in the intensity dependence between experiment and theory. For the isomerization of allene, an inversion of the CEP-dependent asymmetry is observed when the intensity is varied, which we discuss in light of the quantum dynamical model. The inversion of the asymmetry is found to be consistent with a transition from non-sequential to sequential double ionization.

Abstract:We perform an experimental study of the multi-orbital effect on the high-order harmonic generation（HHG） from aligned N 2 molecules in both linearly and elliptically polarized intense laser fields.Measured by a home-built extreme ultraviolet（XUV） flat grating spectrometer with the pump–probe method, the angular distributions of different orders of HHG are obtained, which show distinctive behaviors for harmonics in the plateau and the cut-off regions.The ellipticity dependence of HHG is investigated by aligning the molecular axis parallel or perpendicular to the laser polarization.Our results indicate that both the highest occupied molecular orbital（HOMO） as well as the lower one（HOMO-1） contribute to the HHG of N 2 molecules, in either linearly or elliptically polarized intense laser field.The study paves the way for understanding the ultrafast electron dynamics of molecules exposed to an intense laser field.

Abstract:The fragments from Coulomb explosion of C2H4 irradiated by 130fs laser pulses at 810nm wavelength and intensity around 1015W/cm2 are studied by using a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. The angular distributions of atomic ions exhibit anisotropy with the maximum along the laser polarization axis and the minimum perpendicular to it. The similar full width values at half maximum of angular distributions for Cm+ (m=1–3) ions imply a geometric alignment. On the other side, the singly and doubly charged molecular ions exhibit a markedly isotopic distribution. The dependence of the doubly charged parent ion (C2H4)2+ on laser intensity indicates a nonsequential ionization mechanism.

Abstract:Ethylene, the simplest model of a carbon-carbon double bond system, is pivotal in numerous chemical and biological processes. By employing intense infrared (IR) laser pump-probe techniques alongside coincidence measurements, we investigated the ultrafast non-adiabatic dynamics involved in the breakage of carbon-carbon double bonds and hydrogen elimination in ethylene's dissociation. Our study entailed analyzing the dynamic Kinetic Energy Release (KER) spectra to assess three bond-breaking scenarios, the movements of nuclei, and the structural changes around the carbon atoms. This allowed us to evaluate the relaxation dynamics and characteristics of various dissociative states. Notably, we observed a significant rise in the yield of fragments resulting from CH bond breakage as the delay time extended, suggesting non-adiabatic coupling through conical intersections from CC bond breakage as a probable cause.

Abstract:Using classic particle dynamics simulations, the interaction process between an intense femtosecond laser pulse and icosahedral hydrogen atomic clusters H-13, H-55 and H-147 has been studied. It is revealed that with increasing number of atoms in the cluster, the kinetic energy of ions generated in the Coulomb explosion of the ionized hydrogen clusters increases. The expansion process of the clusters after laser irradiation has also been examined, showing that the expansion scale decreases with increasing cluster size.

Abstract:The dissociative ionization of toluene initiated by a few-cycle laser pulse as a function of the carrier envelope phase (CEP) is investigated using single-shot velocity map imaging. Several ionic fragments, CH3 (+), H2 (+), and H3 (+), originating from multiply charged toluene ions present a CEP-dependent directional emission. The formation of H2 (+) and H3 (+) involves breaking C-H bonds and forming new bonds between the hydrogen atoms within the transient structure of the multiply charged precursor. We observe appreciable intensity-dependent CEP-offsets. The experimental data are interpreted with a mechanism that involves laser-induced coupling of vibrational states, which has been found to play a role in the CEP-control of molecular processes in hydrocarbon molecules, and appears to be of general importance for such complex molecules.

Abstract:We experimentally studied the ionization and dissociation of methane, ethane, and propane in strong 8 fs laser fields at an intensity of several 10(14) W/cm(2). Strong parent ions and abundant fragmental ions were observed for all three of these kinds of molecules. Our observations indicated that these molecules were first ionized under strong ultrashort laser fields and electron-ion pairs were produced. Driven by the remaining laser oscillating electric field, the parent ion and the correlated electron collided with each other. Depending on the electron-ion impact energy, the parent ion was excited to a dissociated state or a doubly charged state. The experimentally observed fragmental ions resulted from the recollision-induced dissociation of the singly charged parent ion or the Coulomb explosion of the doubly charged parent ion.

Abstract:Probing transient charge localization in the innershell orbital of atoms and molecules has been made possible by the recent progress of advanced light sources. Here, we demonstrate that the ultrafast electron tunneling ionization by an intense femtosecond laser pulse could induce an asymmetric transient charge localization in the valence shell of the HCl molecule during the dissociative ionization process. The transient charge localization is encoded in the laser impulse acquired by the outgoing ionic fragments, and the asymmetry is revealed by carefully examining the electron tunneling-site distinguished momentum angular distribution of the ejected H^{+} fragments. Our work proposes a way to visualize the transient valence charge motion and will stimulate further investigations of the tunneling-site-sensitive ultrafast dynamics of molecules in strong laser fields.

Abstract:Real-time visualization of molecular transformations is a captivating yet challenging frontier of ultrafast optical science and physical chemistry. While ultrafast x-ray and electron diffraction methods can achieve the needed subangstrom spatial resolution, their temporal resolution is still limited to hundreds of femtoseconds, much longer than the few femtoseconds required to probe real-time molecular dynamics. Here, we show that high-order harmonics generated by intense femtosecond lasers can be used to image molecules with few-ten-attosecond temporal resolution and few-picometer spatial resolution. This is achieved by exploiting the sensitive dependence of molecular recombination dipole moment to the geometry of the molecule at the time of harmonic emission. In a proof-of-principle experiment, we have applied this high-harmonic structure imaging (HHSI) method to monitor the structural rearrangement in NH_{3}, ND_{3}, and N_{2} from one to a few femtoseconds after the molecule is ionized by an intense laser. Our findings establish HHSI as an effective approach to resolve molecular dynamics with unprecedented spatiotemporal resolution, which can be extended to trace photochemical reactions in the future.

Abstract:Theoretical study on H$_2^+$ in an intense infrared laser field on the attosecond time-scale reveals that the molecular ion shows multiple bursts of ionization within a half-cycle of the laser field oscillation, in contrast to the widely accepted tunnel ionization picture for an atom. These bursts are found to be induced by transient localization of the electron at one of the nuclei, and a relation between the time instants of the localization and the vector potential of the laser light is derived. Furthermore, an experimental scheme is proposed to probe the localization dynamics by an extreme ultraviolet laser pulse.

Abstract:We have studied multielectron ionization and Coulomb explosion of C 2 H 4 irradiated by 110 fs, 800 nm laser pulses at an intensity of ∼10 15 W/cm 2 . Strong anisotropic angular distributions were observed for the atomic ions C n + ( n =1–3). Based on the results of two crossed linearly polarized laser pulses, we conclude that such anisotropic angular distributions result from dynamic alignment, in which the rising edge of the laser pulses aligns the neutral C 2 H 4 molecules along the laser polarization direction. The angular distribution of the exploding fragments, therefore, reflects the degree of the alignment of molecules before ionization. Using the same femtosecond laser with intensity below the ionization threshold, the alignment of C 2 H 4 molecules was also observed.
Explosion Dynamics of Methane Clusters Irradiated by 38 nm XUV Laser Pulses

Abstract:We have studied the explosion dynamics of methane clusters irradiated by intense, femtosecond, 38 nm (32.6 eV) XUV laser pulses. The ion time-of-flight spectrum measured with a Wiley-McLaren-type time-of-flight spectrometer reveals undissociated molecular $\textrm{CH}_4^+$ ions, fragments which are missing hydrogen atoms due to the breakage of one or more C-H bonds $(\textrm{CH}_3^+, \textrm{CH}_2^+ \ \textrm{and}\ \textrm{CH}^+)$ and the recombination product $\textrm{CH}_5^+$. Also visible on the time-of-flight traces are atomic and molecular hydrogen ions $(\textrm{H}^+ \textrm{and}\ \textrm{H}_2^+)$, carbon ions, and larger hydrocarbons such as $\textrm{C}_2 \textrm{H}_2^+$ and $\textrm{C}_2\textrm{H}_3^+$. No doubly-charged parent ions $(\textrm{CH}_4^{2+})$ were detected. The time-of-flight results show that total and relative ion yields depend strongly on cluster size. The absolute yields of $\textrm{CH}^+_5$ and $\textrm{H}^+$ scale linearly with the yields of the other generated fragments up to a cluster size of $\langle\textrm{N}\rangle=70,000 \ \textrm{molecules}$, then begin to decrease, whereas the yields of the $\textrm{CH}_n^+(n=1-4) $ fragments plateau at this cluster size. The behavior of $\textrm{H}^+$ may be understood through the electron recombination rate, which depends on the electron temperature and the cluster average charge. Moreover, the $\textrm{CH}_5^+$ behavior is explained by the depletion of both $\textrm{CH}_4^+$ and $\textrm{H}^+$ via electron-ion recombination in the expanding nanoplasma.

Energetic Proton Generation from Intense Coulomb Explosion of Large-Size Ethane Clusters

Abstract:An experimental investigation is performed on the interaction of intense femtosecond laser pulses at the intensity of 6 x 10(17) W/cm(2) (55 fs, 160 mJ at 800 nm) with ethane cluster (C2H6)(N) jets prepared under the backing pressure of 30 bars at room temperature (298 K). The experiment results indicate the generation of energetic protons, whose average and maximum kinetic energies are 12.2 and 138.1 keV, respectively, by Coulomb explosion of (C2H6)(N) clusters. (C2H6)(N) clusters of 5 nm in radius are generated in the experiment, which are 1.7 times larger than that of (CH4)(N) clusters prepared in the same conditions. Empirical estimation suggests that (C2H6)(N) clusters with radius of about 9.6 nm can be prepared at 80-bars backing pressure at 308 K. While (C2H6)(N) clusters of so large size are irradiated by sufficiently intense laser pulses, the average energy of protons will be increased up to 50 keV. It is inferred that such large-size deuterated ethane clusters (C2D6)(N) will favor more efficient neutron generation due to the significant increase of the D-D nuclear reaction cross section in laser-driven cluster nuclear fusion. Electro-nuclear dynamics of single and double ionization of H$_2$ in ultrafast intense laser pulses

Abstract:We present an efficient method for modeling the single and double ionization dynamics of the H$_2$ molecule in ultrashort intense laser fields. This method is based on a semi-analytical approach to calculate the time-dependent single and double molecular ionization rates and on a numerical approach to describe the vibrational motion that takes place in the intermediate molecular ion H$_2^+$. This model allows for the prediction of the single and double ionization probabilities of the H$_2$ molecule to be made over a wide range of frequencies and laser intensities with limited computational time, while providing a realistic estimate of the energy of the products of the dissociative ionization and of the Coulomb explosion of the H$_2$ molecule. The effect of vibrational dynamics on ionization yields and proton kinetic energy release spectra is demonstrated and, in the case of the latter, discussed in terms of basic strong-field molecular fragmentation mechanisms.

Abstract:The three-body fragmentation channel H+ + H+ + C3H2+ of the allene trication produced by 30-keV/u He2+ ion impact is investigated using cold-target recoil-ion momentum spectroscopy. The two protons with different kinetic energies are found emitted sequentially from the parent trication. The presence of such a sequential deprotonation process and the absence of corresponding concerted deprotonation may result from a major molecular deformation process, e.g., ultrafast hydrogen migration, which occurs in the parent ion prior to fragmentation, and finally leads to the formation of two different protons.

Abstract:Following the changes in molecular structure throughout the entirety of a chemical reaction with atomic resolution is a long-term goal in femtochemistry. Although the development of a plethora of ultrafast technique has enabled detailed investigations of the electronic and nuclear dynamics on femtosecond time scales, direct and unambiguous imaging of the nuclear motion during a reaction is still a major challenge. Here, we apply time-resolved Coulomb explosion imaging with femtosecond near-infrared pulses to visualize the ultraviolet-induced ultrafast molecular dynamics of gas-phase furan. Widely contradicting predictions and observations for this molecule have been reported in the literature. By combining the experimental Coulomb explosion imaging data with ab initio molecular dynamics and Coulomb explosion simulations, we reveal the presence of a strong ultrafast ring-opening pathway upon excitation at 198 nm that occurs within 100 fs.

Probing multiphoton light-induced molecular potentials

Abstract:The strong coupling between intense laser fields and valence electrons in molecules causes a distortion of the potential energy hypersurfaces which determine the motion of nuclei in a molecule and influences possible reaction pathways. The coupling strength varies with the angle between the light electric field and valence orbital, and thereby adds another dimension to the effective molecular potential energy surface, allowing for the emergence of light-induced conical intersections. Here, we demonstrate in theory and experiment that the full complexity of such light-induced potential energy surfaces can be uncovered. In H$_2^+$, the simplest of molecules, we observe a strongly modulated angular distribution of protons which has escaped prior observation. These modulations directly result from ultrafast dynamics on the light-induced molecular potentials and can be modified by varying the amplitude, duration and phase of the mid-infrared dressing field. This opens new opportunities for manipulating the dissociation of small molecules using strong laser fields.

Strong-field ionization with few-cycle, mid-infrared laser pulses induces a localized ionization followed by long-lasting charge migration in halogenated organic molecules

Abstract:We show that applying a few-femtosecond mid-infrared laser pulse parallel to the backbone of a halogenated, conjugated organic molecule induces localized ionization followed by long-lasting field-free charge migration (CM). Through time-dependent density-functional theory calculations, we find that this CM is robust with respect to the parameters of the applied laser pulse. We document the spatial and temporal origin of the localized hole, which is initiated via strong-field tunnel ionization in the halogen end of the molecule, and near the peak of the laser electric field. In bromobutadiyne we find a range of wavelengths around $1500~\text{nm}$ that consistently leads to the initiation of high-contrast CM. In addition, we show that the inclusion of Ehrenfest nuclear dynamics does not disrupt the creation of the localized hole, nor the subsequent CM motion, in bromobutadiyne or \emph{para}-bromoaniline.

Abstract:The field ionization and Coulomb explosion of diatomic carbon monoxide interacting with intense femtosecond laser pulses was systematically investigated by using a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. The kinetic energy release (KER) in a Coulomb explosion causes the atomic ions to exhibit a double-peak structure. The values of KER calculated using a two-step model were found to agree well with the measured, ones. The distributions of atomic ions are highly anisotropic, having a maximum along the laser polarization axis and a minimum perpendicular to it. In contrast to the atomic ions, the parent ion CO+ exhibits a strong isotropic angular distribution. Suppression of ionization was observed for circularly polarized pulses, indicating that the dynamic alignment is responsible for the observed anisotropic angular distribution of the atomic ions.
