Abstract:Co3O4@CoNi-layered double hydroxide (LDH) core/shell nanosheet array on Ni foam was prepared as an integrated battery-type electrode for supercapacitors by growth of CoNi-LDH nanosheets shell on the surface of Co3O4 plates core. The resulting composite material exhibits high specific capacitance (2676.9 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1)) and excellent cycling stability. The improved electrochemical behavior is benefited from the typical mesoporous structure, which shorten the diffusion distance of OH-in the electrolyte and the strong core/shell binding interaction among Co3O4 and CoNi-LDH nanosheet arrays. Additionally, an assembled asymmetric supercapacitor (ASCs) device using as-fabricated Co3O4@CoNi-LDH as positive electrode and activated carbon (AC) as negative electrode also exhibits a high energy density of 61.23 Wh kg(-1) at a high power density of 750 W kg(-1), furthermore, still remains 24.8 Wh kg(-1) even at a higher power density of 7500 W kg(-1). Most importantly, a red light-emitting diode (LED) can be illuminated by two connected ASCs, indicating that assynthesized Co3O4@ CoNi-LDH possesses great potential for practical applications. As a result, this work demonstrates a feasible strategy for the design and fabrication of metal oxides/LDH composites for applications in energy storage systems.

Abstract:This paper describes a facile chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and subsequent radio-frequency (RF)-sputtering approach for the synthesis of CoO/NiSi(x) core-shell nanowire (NW) arrays on Ni foams. The metallic core (i.e., NiSi(x)) with high conductivity acts as a nanostructured current collector. The as-synthesized CoO/NiSi(x) core-shell NW arrays have been applied as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, which deliver high cycle life and enhanced power performance compared to planar CoO electrodes on Ni foams. The high surface-to-volume ratio and improved electronic/ionic conductivity of the nanostructured electrodes may be responsible for the improved performance.

Abstract:Self-standing NiCO2S4 nanotube arrays have been in situ grown on Ni foam by the anion-exchange reaction and directly used as the electrode for supercapacitors. The NiCO2S4 nanotube in the arrays effectively reduces the inactive material and increases the electroactive surface area because of the ultrathin wall, which is quite competent to achieve high utilization efficiency at high electroactive materials mass loading. The NiCO2S4 nanotube arrays hybrid electrode exhibits an ultrahigh specific capacitance of 14.39 F cm(-2) at 5 mA cm(-2) with excellent rate performance (67.7% retention for current increases 30 times) and cycling stability (92% retention after 5000 cycles) at a high mass loading of 6 mg cm(-2). High areal capacitance (4.68 F cm(-2) at 10 mA cm(-2)), high energy density (31.5 Wh kg(-1) at 156.6 W kg(-1)) and high power density (2348.5 W kg(-1) at 16.6 Wh kg(-1)) can be achieved by assembling asymmetric supercapacitor with reduced graphene oxide at a total active material mass loading as high as 49.5 mg. This work demonstrates that NiCO2S4 nanotube arrays structure is a superior electroactive material for high-performance supercapacitors even at a mass loading of potential application-specific scale. 3D TiO2@Ni(OH)2 Core-shell Arrays with Tunable Nanostructure for Hybrid Supercapacitor Application

Abstract:Three dimensional hierarchical nanostructures have attracted great attention for electrochemical energy storage applications. In this work, self-supported TiO2@Ni(OH)2 core-shell nanowire arrays are prepared on carbon fiber paper via the combination of hydrothermal synthesis and chemical bath deposition. In this core-shell hybrid, the morphology and wall size of the interconnected nanoflake shell of Ni(OH)2 can be tuned through adjusting the concentration of ammonia solution. Heterogeneous nucleation and subsequent oriented crystal growth are identified to be the synthesis mechanism affecting the nanostructure of the shell material, which consequently determines the electrochemical performance in both energy storage and charge transfer. Superior capabilities of 264 mAh g(-1) at 1 A g(-1) and 178 mAh g(-1) at 10 A g(-1) are achieved with the core-shell hybrids of the optimized structure. The asymmetric supercapacitor prototype, comprising of TiO2@Ni(OH)2 as the anode and mesoporous carbons (MCs) as the cathode, is shown to exhibit superior electrochemical performance with high energy and power densities. The present work provides a clear illustration of the structure-property relationship in nanocrystal synthesis and offers a potential strategy to enhance the battery type Ni(OH)2 electrode in a hybrid supercapacitor device.

Abstract:The high performance of a pseudocapacitor electrode relies largely on a scrupulous design of nanoarchitectures and smart hybridization of bespoke active materials. We present a powerful two-step solution-based method for the fabrication of transition metal oxide core/shell nanostructure arrays on various conductive substrates. Demonstrated examples include Co(3)O(4) or ZnO nanowire core and NiO nanoflake shells with a hierarchical and porous morphology. The "oriented attachment" and "self-assembly" crystal growth mechanisms are proposed to explain the formation of the NiO nanoflake shell. Supercapacitor electrodes based on the Co(3)O(4)/NiO nanowire arrays on 3D macroporous nickel foam are thoroughly characterized. The electrodes exhibit a high specific capacitance of 853 F/g at 2 A/g after 6000 cycles and an excellent cycling stability, owing to the unique porous core/shell nanowire array architecture, and a rational combination of two electrochemically active materials. Our growth approach offers a new technique for the design and synthesis of transition metal oxide or hydroxide hierarchical nanoarrays that are promising for electrochemical energy storage, catalysis, and gas sensing applications.

Abstract:Hierarchical NiCo2O4@NiCo2O4 core/shell nanoflake arrays on nickel foam for high-performance supercapacitors are fabricated by a two-step solution-based method which involves in hydrothermal process and chemical bath deposition. Compared with the bare NiCo2O4 nanoflake arrays, the core/shell electrode displays better pseudocapacitive behaviors in 2 M KOH, which exhibits high areal specific capacitances of 1.55 F cm(-2) at 2 mA cm(-2) and 1.16 F cm(-2) at 40 mA cm(-2) before activation as well as excellent cycling stability. The specific capacitance can achieve a maximum of 2.20 F cm(-2) at a current density of 5 mA cm(-2), which can still retain 2.17 F cm(-2) (98.6% retention) after 4000 cycles. The enhanced pseudocapacitive performances are mainly attributed to its unique core/shell structure, which provides fast ion and electron transfer, a large number of active sites, and good strain accommodation.

Abstract:Pseudocapacitors and redox capacitors have become the most promising candidates for high-energy and high-power energy storage applications due to their excellent quick charge/discharge capacity and cyclic stability. Because the controllable construction of hierarchical structures would promote the single contribution of pure materials, and the formation of an interface between structures can enhance the electrochemical performance of supercapacitors, a high-performance nickel 2O4@Ni(OH)2 supercapacitor electrode has been fabricated via a facile hydrothermal route in this work. Besides, density functional theory calculations were performed to explore the distinct diffusion and binding capabilities between the cobalt and nickel species. The as-prepared NiCo2O4@Ni(OH)2 electrode possesses unexceptionable electrochemical pseudocapacitive performance including a remarkable specific capacitance (3.5 F cm–2 at a current density of 1 mA cm–2 or 2356 F g–1 at a current density of 0.67 A g–1), high rate performance (64.0% retention at a current density of 20 mA cm–2), and high cycling stability (94.1% retention after 5000 cycles). Nio@Mno2 Core-Shell Composite Microtube Arrays for High-Performance Lithium Ion Batteries

Abstract:Tubular array structures are very attractive for electrochemical energy storage and conversion systems due to their unique physicochemical properties. Herein, a NiO microtube array is fabricated via a facile oxalic acid corrosion method followed by heat treatment. A NiO@MnO2 core-shell composite microtube array is further achieved by the anodic electrodeposition using the NiO microtube array as substrate. When applied as self-supported electrode for lithium ion batteries (LIBs), the NiO@MnO2 core-shell composite microtube array electrode shows excellent lithium storage properties. The electrode delivers a reversible capacity of 510 mA h g(-1) at a high rate of 5.1 A g(-1), showing its good rate capability. In particular, a reversible capacity of 1573 mA h g(-1) is observed after 500 cycles at a current density of 0.53 A g(-1), demonstrating the superior cycling performance of the electrode. The electrodeposited MnO2 layer as a protective shell prevents the NiO microtubes from deformation during electrochemical cycling, responsible for the superior cycle stability of the NiO@MnO2 core-shell composite microtube array electrode. The prominent lithium storage performance of the composite microtube array electrode can be attributed to its unique structure characteristics.

Abstract:Abstract An integrated electrode of core–shell coaxially structured NiCo 2 S 4 @TiO 2 nanorod arrays/carbon cloth (NiCo 2 S 4 @TiO 2 @CC) have been fabricated, via a two-step hydrothermal method. Comprehensive structural and compositional analyzes are performed to understand the effects of the NiCo 2 S 4 shell on the TiO 2 core. Such core–shell arrays structure can significantly provide abundant electroactive sites for redox reactions, convenient ion transport paths, and favorable structure stability. The NiCo 2 S 4 @TiO 2 @CC electrode represents a splendid specific capacitance (650 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 ) and enhanced cycling stability (capacitance retention of 97% over 10 000 cycles at 5 A g −1 ). Additionally, the assembled NiCo 2 S 4 @TiO 2 @CC//CNT@CC solid-state asymmetric supercapacitors exhibit a maximal energy density of 0.6 mWh cm −3 at 32.4 W cm −3 , and topping cycling stability (85% capacitance retention after 5000 cycles at 5 mA cm −2 ). The results demonstrate that the well-designed NiCo 2 S 4 @TiO 2 @CC presented in this work are applicable for the development of electrode materials in energy storage devices.

Atomic Layer Deposition of Nickel on ZnO Nanowire Arrays for High-Performance Supercapacitors.

Abstract:A novel hybrid core-shell structure of ZnO nanowires (NWs)/Ni as a pseudocapacitor electrode was successfully fabricated by atomic layer deposition of a nickel shell, and its capacitive performance was systemically investigated. Transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results indicated that the NiO was formed at the interface between ZnO and Ni where the Ni was oxidized by ZnO during the ALD of the Ni layer. Electrochemical measurement results revealed that the Ti/ZnO NWs/Ni (1500 cycles) electrode with a 30 nm thick Ni-NiO shell layer had the best supercapacitor properties including ultrahigh specific capacitance (∼2440 F g-1), good rate capability (80.5%) under high current charge-discharge conditions, and a relatively better cycling stability (86.7% of the initial value remained after 750 cycles at 10 A g-1). These attractive capacitive behaviors are mainly attributed to the unique core-shell structure and the combined effect of ZnO NW arrays as short charge transfer pathways for ion diffusion and electron transfer as well as conductive Ni serving as channel for the fast electron transport to Ti substrate. This high-performance Ti/ZnO NWs/Ni hybrid structure is expected to be one of a promising electrodes for high-performance supercapacitor applications.

Abstract:Herein, it reports the design and synthesis of NiCoO2@Ni3S2 core/shell arrays on Ni foam using a two-step method of hydrothermal method and electrodeposition. The hetero-structures are composed of NiCoO2 flakes as the core-material and Ni3S2 ultrathin nanosheets as the shell-material. Due to the unique core/shell hetero-structure and positive synergistic effect of two components, hierarchical NiCoO2@Ni3S2 arrays exhibit excellent capacitive performance as energy storage materials. The mass specific capacity of NiCoO2@Ni3S2 is as high as 1599.5C g−1 at 1.0 A g−1, which is higher than the sum of the capacity of the two samples NiCoO2/NF(640.0C g−1) and Ni3S2/NF(695.3C g−1). NiCoO2@Ni3S2/NF also shows a very high areal specific capacity of 4.06 C cm−2. Therefore, NiCoO2@Ni3S2 arrays greatly releases the energy storage potential of the NiCoO2 and Ni3S2 materials in supercapacitors. Furthermore, a hybrid supercapacitor device fabricated using NiCoO2@Ni3S2/NF as positive electrode and the graphene as negative electrode possesses a high energy density of 73.97 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 800 W kg−1, and maintain 22.01 Wh kg−1 at a high power density of 12.8 kW kg−1. These results demonstrate that hierarchical NiCoO2@Ni3S2 core/shell arrays have great potential as a positive electrode in supercapacitor with high energy density.
Coaxial NixCo2 x(OH)6 x/TiN nanotube arrays as supercapacitor electrodes

Abstract:NixCo2x(OH)6x, as a precursor of intensively studied NiCo2O4, has been directly deposited into self-standing titanium nitride nanotube array (TiN NTA) grid monolithic supports to form a coaxial nanostructured electrode for supercapacitors. With TiN NTA substrates providing a large surface area, fast electron transport, and enhanced structure stability, this NixCo2x(OH) 6x/TiN electrode exhibits superior pseudocapacitive performance with a high specific capacitance of 2543 F g-1 at 5 mV s-1, remarkable rate performance of 660 F g-1 even at 500 mV s -1, and promising cycle performance (about 6.25% capacitance loss for 5000 cycles). Interestingly, the NixCo2x(OH) 6x/TiN NTA electrode outperforms the NiCo2O 4/TiN NTA electrode, indicating that this self-standing Ni xCo2x(OH)6x/TiN NTA monolith is a promising candidate for high-performance supercapacitor applications. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

Abstract:Design of new materials with sophisticated nanostructure has been proven to be an efficient strategy to improve their properties in many applications. Herein, we demonstrate the successful combination of high electron conductive materials of NiCo2O4 with high capacitance materials of MnMoO4 by forming a core-shell nanostructure. The NiCo2O4@MnMoO4 core-shell nanoarrays (CSNAs) electrode possesses high capacitance of 1169 F g(-1) (4.24 F cm(-2)) at a current density of 2.5 mA cm(-2), obviously larger than the pristine NiCo2O4 electrode. The asymmetric supercapacitors (ASCs), assembled with NiCo2O4@MnMoO4 CSNAs as binder-free cathode and active carbon (AC) as anode, exhibit high energy density of 15 Wh kg(-1) and high power density of 6734 W kg(-1). Cycle performance of NiCo2O4@MnMoO4 CSNAs//AC ASCs, conducted at current density of 20 mA cm(-2), remain 96.45% of the initial capacitance after 10,000 cycles, demonstrating its excellent long-term cycle stability. Kinetically decoupled analysis reveals that the capacitive capacitance is dominant in the total capacitance of NiCo2O4@MnMoO4 CSNAs electrode, which may be the reason for ultra long cycle stability of ASCs. Our assembled button ASC can easily light up a red LED for 30 min and a green LED for 10 min after being charged for 30 s. The remarkable electrochemical performance of NiCo2O4@MnMoO4 CSNAs//AC ASCs is attributed to its enhanced surface area, abundant electroactive sites, facile electrolyte infiltration into the 3D NiCo2O4@MnMnO4 nanoarrays and fast electron and ion transport path.

Abstract:ZnWO4@NiCo2O4 core-shell nanosheet array composites are synthesized on nickel foam via a two-step hydrothermal method. The optimal conditions, including a Ni(NO3)2·6H2O to Co(NO3)2·6H2O molar ratio of 2 : 1, 12 hours reaction time, and 120 °C temperature, yield a specific capacitance of 875 C g-1 at 1 A g-1. The electrode also maintains 81.1% capacitance after 10 000 cycles. The material's performance is attributed to its core-shell structure, which enhances ion diffusion and electron transport. This study presents a viable approach for high-performance supercapacitor electrodes.

Abstract:A facile solvothermal method followed by a postannealing process is used to prepare NiO@NiCo2O4 core–shell nanosheet arrays supported on Ni foam substrate for a high-performance supercapacitor. The hybrid electrode possesses a three-dimensional structure with the “shell” of NiCo2O4 nanoflakes anchored on the “core” of ordered NiO nanosheets. It shows high specific capacitance of 1623.6 F g–1 (or specific capacity of 225.5 mAh g–1) at 2 A g–1 and excellent rate performance with a 96% capacitance retention rate at 20 A g–1. The high cycling stability is proved by nearly 90% capacitance retention at 10 A g–1 after 10000 cycles. Its asymmetric supercapacitor, assembled with NiO@NiCo2O4/Ni foam and the activated carbon/Ni foam as the positive and negative electrode, respectively, displays the specific energy of 52.5 W h kg–1 at 387.5 W kg–1. The excellent electrochemical performance of NiO@NiCo2O4 electrode indicates its great potential in applications of energy storage devices.
Design and synthesis of NiCo2O4@Au@NiO sandwiched coaxial core–shell nanowire arrays on carbon fabric for high-performance supercapacitor

Abstract:We developed a facile synthetic method to construct novel sandwiched coaxial core–shell heterojunction electrodes by combining NiO nanosheets wrapped in 1D NiCo 2 O 4 @Au nanowires with carbon fibre cloth (denoted NiCo 2 O 4 @Au@NiO). XRD, SEM and TEM techniques were used to characterize the structure of NiCo 2 O 4 @Au@NiO. Electrochemical measurements confirmed that the nanostructured composite had an electrochemical capacitance that was greater than that of each individual component due to synergistic effects. The NiCo 2 O 4 @Au@NiO electrode had an extremely high specific capacitance (163.1 mAh g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 ) and excellent cycling stability (90.2% after 10,000 cycles) in a three-electrode system with a 2 M KOH electrolyte. Furthermore, the performance of the asymmetric supercapacitor NiCo 2 O 4 @Au@NiO//AC was evaluated, and the energy density was 65.5 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 375 W kg −1 . The excellent electrochemical capabilities of the nanoscale architecture electrodes provide a new route for developing high-performance supercapacitors with 3D multicomponent heterojunction core–shell structures.

Abstract:As newly developed energy storage devices, high-performance supercapacitors are expected to have large energy densities and it is urgent to design and fabricate novel electrode materials with high capacity and good stability. Core-shell structured hybrid films of Co3O4@NiCo2O4 nanowires were deposited on nickel foam as current collector in this work, different from previously reported assembly manner. The pre-formed NiCo2O4 nanowires on nickel foam as core can serves as conducive paths for the shell material of Co3O4 nanosheets. Since two metal oxides are derived from metal hydroxides by annealing, both components show porous characteristics, benefiting for the diffusion and transportation of electrolyte. Electrochemical measurements demonstrate that the hybrid film has a higher specific capacitance about 995F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1) than both Co3O4 and NiCo2O4 due to the synergistic effect between two materials, leading to a smaller resistance. An asymmetric cell using activated carbon as negative electrode and the hybrid film as positive electrode delivers an energy density of 36.8 Wh kg(-1) at 425 W kg(-1) in 1.65 V, showing large potential for energy storage.

Abstract:The composites of NiCo2O4 with unique structures are extensively explored as promising electrodes. In this work, core-shell structured nanowires anchored on nickel foam are synthesized by the hydrothermal synthesis of NiCo2O4 as core and subsequent electrodeposition of alpha-Co(OH)(2) as shell. The core-shell composites exhibit enhanced electrochemical performances ascribing to the synergistic reactions from both materials, showing higher specific capacitance than any single component. By changing the deposition time, the mass loading of alpha-Co(OH)(2) can be easily controlled. The electrochemical performances of the hybrid electrodes are diverse with the mass loading of Co(OH)(2). The optimized hybrid electrode with 3 mins electrodeposition exhibits the highest specific capacitance (1298 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1)) among all electrodes. The redox reaction is a main contributor to the total specific capacitance through electrochemical kinetics analysis. An asymmetric supercapacitor assembled by the optimized material as positive electrode and activated carbon as negative electrode can achieve a relatively high energy density of 39.7 Wh kg(-1) at a power density of 387.5 W kg(-1) (at 0.5 A g(-1)) in a voltage of 1.55 V.
