Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has received considerable interest for electrochemical energy storage and conversion. In this work, we demonstrate a material on synthesis of a unique hierarchical hollow structure by growing layered MoS2 nanosheets on assembled graphene nanotubes via a template-sacrificed approach (named as graphene@MoS2 nanotubes). As a proof of concept, the graphene@MoS2 nanotubes as the anode materials of lithium-ion batteries exhibit excellent cycling performance at 400 mA g(-1) up to 120 cycles without considerable capacity loss (830 mA h g(-1), with 96.5% capacity retention) and high rate behavior (502 mA h g(-1) at 2000 mA g(-1)), which is far beyond than that of the pure MoS2 nanosheets and even graphene@MoS2 nanosheets composites. Furthermore, combined with in-situ TEM lithiation experiments, we find a novel conversion reaction mechanism of MoS2 anodes that Li ions induce structural destruction in c-direction following a dynamic layer-by-layer dissociation with Mo/Li2S composites left, rather than well-known multistep reaction in bulk phase. The first-principles computations verify that the surfacial relaxation of Li2S to form an anti-fluorite structure on higher electric conductive LixMoS(2) surface is the primarily thermodynamic driving force for activating the above-mentioned reaction. These results are envisaged to be helpful for designing durable conversion-type MoS2 anodes by surface engineering, and the hierarchical tubular feature further points out a new protocol for graphene based hybrid anode for enhanced lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Transitional metal sulfide/carbon hybrids with well-defined structures could not only maximize the functional properties of each constituent but engender some unique synergistic effects, holding great promise for applications in Li-ion batteries and supercapacitors and for catalysis. Herein, a facile and versatile approach is developed to controllably grow 2D ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets with a large quantity of exposed edges onto various 1D carbons, including carbon nanotubes (CNTs), electrospun carbon nanofibers, and Te-nanowire-templated carbon nanofibers. The typical approach involves the employment of layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembled polyelectrolyte, which controls spatially the uniform growth and orientation of ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets on these 1D carbons irrespective of their surface properties. Such unique structures of the as-prepared CNTs@MoS2 hybrid are significantly favorable for the fast diffusions of both Li-ions and electrons, satisfying the kinetic requirements of high-power lithium ion batteries. As a result, CNTs@MoS2 hybrids exhibit excellent electrochemical performances for lithium storage, including a high reversible capacity (1027 mAh g(-1)), high-rate capability (610 mAh g(-1) at 5 C), and excellent cycling stability (negligible capacity loss after 200 continuous cycles).
MoS2 nanoflowers implanted in nitrogen-doped carbon fibers with Fe2O3 nanoparticles decorated for enhanced lithium storage performance

Abstract:MoS2 has attracted extensive attention due to its unique two-dimensional layered structure and high theoretical capacity. Unfortunately, the large volume variation and sluggish lithiation kinetics during charging/discharging result in low-rate capability and poor cyclic stability. To solve those issues, MoS2/Fe2O3 @ carbon fiber (CNF) composite was designed delicately by implanting MoS2 nanoflowers in nitrogen-doped carbon fibers with Fe2O3 nanoparticles decorated. The carbon nano-fibers served as a holder to accommodate the volume expansion of MoS2 and provide a high-speed channel for electron transport, while Fe2O3 nanoparticles are apt to form heterojunction with MoS2, producing an internal electric field to enhance the ionic dynamic. As a result, the optimized sample, denoted as MoS2/Fe2O3 @CNF-3, exhibits high first discharge capacity of ∼1370 mAh g−1 at 50 mA g−1 and excellent cycle performance (559.74 mAh g−1 after 500 cycles at 1 A g−1, with capacity retention rate of 71.6%). In , the design techniques of heterojunction building and carbon encapsulation can be applied to different energy storage materials and have significant potential for enhancing lithium-ion battery performance electrochemically.

Ultrafast Li-storage of MoS 2 Nanosheets Grown on Metal-Organic Framework-Derived Microporous Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Dodecahedrons

Abstract:The nanocomposites of MoS2 nanosheets and microporous nitrogen-doped carbon dodecahedron (MNCD) are prepared through the pyrolysis of metal-organic framework (MOF) and subsequent growth of MoS2. The porous and active surface of MNCDs enables uniform growth of ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets. When the MNCD@MoS2 composite is used as the anode material of Li-ion batteries, a reversible capacity of 915 mAh g(-1) can be obtained even at the extremely high current density of 10 A g(-1). The ultrafast charge/discharge ability of MNCD@MoS2 can be attributed to its unique core-shell structure with the inner MNCDs serving as the reservoir of Li-ions and transport media of electrons. CTAB-assisted Synthesis of Single-Layer MoS2–graphene Composites As Anode Materials of Li-ion Batteries

Abstract:A facile and scalable process was developed for the synthesis of single-layer MoS2-graphene nanosheet (SL-MoS2-GNS) composites based on the concurrent reduction of (NH4)(2)MoS4 and graphene oxide sheets by hydrazine in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), followed by annealing in a N-2 atmosphere. The morphology and microstructure of the composites were examined by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The formation process for the SL-MoS2-GNS composites was also investigated. The SL-MoS2-GNS composites delivered a large reversible capacity and good cycle stability as a Li-ion battery anode. In particular, the composites easily surpassed MoS2 in terms of rate performance and cycle stability at high current densities. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy revealed that the GNS in the composite not only reduced the contact resistance in the electrode but also significantly facilitated the electron transfer in lithiation and delithiation reactions. The good electrochemical performance of the composites for reversible Li+ storage could be attributed to the synergy between the functions of SL-MoS2 and GNS.

Abstract:Due to their superior theoretical specific capacity and energy density, lithium-sulfur (L‒S) batteries are gaining popularity in order to achieve the growing terms for more power generation. However, drawbacks such as low electrical conductivity of the active ingredient sulfur, severe volume expansion and shuttle effect of polysulfides, rapidly decaying battery capacity, and short battery life have hampered their development. A MoWS2@MXene@CNT composite material is used as the main cathode material for L-S batteries in this study. MoWS2 can improve the electrochemical reaction rate by accelerating polysulfide conversion, whereas MXene can suppress electrode volume expansion. Furthermore, the addition of carbon nanotubes (CNT) with high electrical conductivity improves the rate of the electrochemical reaction. Therefore, the MoWS2@MXene@CNT composites have good capacity and versatility as cathode materials and enhance the behavior of L-S batteries.

Abstract:Nanocomposites that combine porous materials and a continuous conductive skeleton as a sulfur host can improve the performance of lithium–sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Herein, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) anchoring small-size (~40 nm) N-doped porous carbon polyhedrons (S-NCPs/CNTs) are designed and synthesized via annealing the precursor of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 grown in situ on CNTs (ZIF-8/CNTs). In the nanocomposite, the S-NCPs serve as an efficient host for immobilizing polysulfides through physical adsorption and chemical bonding, while the interleaved CNT networks offer an efficient charge transport environment. Moreover, the S-NCP/CNT composite with great features of a large specific surface area, high pore volume, and short electronic/ion diffusion depth not only demonstrates a high trapping capacity for soluble lithium polysulfides but also offers an efficient charge/mass transport environment, and an effective buffering of volume changes during charge and discharge. As a result, the Li-S batteries based on a S/S-NCP/CNT cathode deliver a high initial capacity of 1213.8 mAh g−1 at a current rate of 0.2 C and a substantial capacity of 1114.2 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles, corresponding to a high-capacity retention of 91.7%. This approach provides a practical research direction for the design of MOF-derived carbon materials in the application of high-performance Li–S batteries.

Abstract:Traditional lithium-ion batteries that are based on layered Li intercalation electrode materials are limited by the intrinsically low theoretical capacities of both electrodes and cannot meet the increasing demand for energy. A facile route for the synthesis of a new type of composite nanofibers, namely carbon nanofibers decorated with molybdenum disulfide sheets (CNFs@MoS2), is now reported. A synergistic effect was observed for the two-component anode, triggering new electrochemical processes for lithium storage, with a persistent oxidation from Mo (or MoS2) to MoS3 in the repeated charge processes, leading to an ascending capacity upon cycling. The composite exhibits unprecedented electrochemical behavior with high specific capacity, good cycling stability, and superior high-rate capability, suggesting its potential application in high-energy lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:A 3D porous composite consisting of nano‐0D MoS2, nano‐1D carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and nano‐2D graphene is successful prepared using an electrostatic spray deposition (ESD) technique. Depending on the preparation procedure either nanodots of amorphous MoS2 (0.5–5 nm) or nanocrystalline few‐layered MoS2 (5–10 nm) bonded to graphene‐carbon nanotubes backbone are obtained. These functionalized carbon nanotubes adhere to a porous graphene‐based network. Such composites can be directly deposited on the current collectors without any binder or conductive additives to assemble a battery that shows superior rate performance and cycling stability. For nanodots, nucleation and diffusion issues usually connected with conversion are largely mitigated if not totally nullified. The use of mechanically and diffusionally isolated but electrochemically well connected electroactive nanodots offer an effective solution to render conversion reaction reversible. The use of nano‐1D and nano‐2D carbon structures offer additional electrical and mechanical advantages that are discussed. Furthermore, this technique, which is easily extendable to other electrode materials, seems to be of a great potential, especially for thin‐film batteries, flexible batteries, and future paintable batteries.

Abstract:Lithium–sulfur (Li-S) batteries offer a high theoretical energy density but suffer from poor cycling stability and polysulfide shuttling, which limits their practical application. To address these challenges, we developed a PANI-modified MoS2-NG composite, where MoS2 nanoflowers were uniformly grown on graphene oxide (GO) through PANI modification, resulting in an increased interlayer spacing of MoS2. This expanded spacing exposed more active sites, enhancing polysulfide adsorption and catalytic conversion. The composite was used to prepare MoS2-NG/PP separators for Li-S batteries, which achieved a high specific capacity of 714 mAh g−1 at a 3 C rate and maintained a low capacity decay rate of 0.085% per cycle after 500 cycles at 0.5 C. The larger MoS2 interlayer spacing was key to improving redox reaction kinetics and suppressing the shuttle effect, making the MoS2-NG composite a promising material for enhancing the performance and stability of Li-S batteries.

Abstract:Few-layer MoS2-graphene (FL-MoS2/G) composites are successfully fabricated by using a facile hydrothermal approach with the assistance of a small amount of ionic liquid (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, [BMIM]BF4). The effects of the ionic liquid on the microstructure and electrochemical performance of the FL-MoS2/G composites are investigated. It is found that the composites have quasi-3D architectures composed of the interconnected graphene, on which the few-layer MoS2 sheets with more edges and defects are anchored. Electrochemical tests demonstrate that the FL-MoS2/G delivers a high reversible capacity of approximately 1200mAhg(-1) with excellent cycle performance and enhanced high-rate capability. The remarkable electrochemical performance can be attributed to novel features such as the robust quasi-3D heterostructural architecture and the synergetic interaction between FL-MoS2 sheets and graphene.

Abstract:2D transition metal disulfides are one of the most preferred materials for lithium-/sodium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, complex processes and structural instability during cycling are challenges faced. Herein, the hierarchical composite nanotubes CeO2@C@MoS2 (MS/CNTs) are prepared by electrostatic spinning, followed by a simple carbon coating method. The as-prepared composite nanotubes with self-assembled layer structures are characterized by a more stable structure compared with traditional nanofibers due to the existence of a dense skeleton. As a result of the stable framework structure, MS/CNTs exhibit excellent electrochemical performance in LIBs (1002 mA hg(-1) at 0.1 A g(-1) and 690 mA hg(-1) at 1 A g(-1) after 500 cycles) and super-long cyclic stability and electrochemical performance (550 mA hg(-1) at 2 A g(-1) after 2400 cycles). MS/CNTs also show excellent storage performance in sodium batteries (440 mA hg(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1), 400 mA hg(-1) at 1 A g(-1)). The stability of MoS2 nanotubes is effectively improved by chemical and physical methods, mainly due to the support of the CeO2@C, metal-organic framework (MOF) tube skeleton, which avoids the shedding of nanotubes after cycling, maintaining a unique structural topography even after 500 cycles.
Facile Synthesis of Molybdenum Disulfide/Nitrogen-Doped Graphene Composites for Enhanced Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution and Electrochemical Lithium Storage

Abstract:A facile one-pot hydrothermal route with the mediation of ionic liquid (IL, [BMIM]BF4) is presented to synthesize MoS2/nitrogen-doped graphene (MoS2/NG-IL) composites. It is found that as-prepared MoS2/NG-IL composites exhibit that the de-layered MoS2 sheets with more exposed edge sites and defects are well anchored on the N-doped graphene. Due to the synergism between de-layered MoS2 a nd N-doped graphene, MoS2/NG-IL composites exhibit better electrochemical performances for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and reversible lithium storage in comparison with MoS2. Especially, when 1.0 mL of IL is added in hydrothermal solution, the obtained MoS2/NG-IL10 displays very high electrocatalytic activity for HER with a low onset overpotential of 80 mV and a small Tafel slope of 48.0 mV/dec in 0.5 M H2SO4. As anode of lithium ion battery, MoS2/NG-IL10 delivers a reversible capacity as high as 1169 mAh g(-1) at 100 mA g(-1) and enhanced rate capability of 782 mAh g(-1) at 1000 mA g(-1). After 800 cycles, a reversible capacity of about 800 mAh g(-1) at 500 mA g(-1) can be retained, indicating its excellent cyclic stability. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A facile process was developed to synthesize layered MoS(2)/graphene (MoS(2)/G) composites by an l-cysteine-assisted solution-phase method, in which sodium molybdate, as-prepared graphene oxide (GO), and l-cysteine were used as starting materials. As-prepared MoS(2)/G was then fabricated into layered MoS(2)/G composites after annealing in a H(2)/N(2) atmosphere at 800 °C for 2 h. The samples were systematically investigated by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Electrochemical performances were evaluated in two-electrode cells versus metallic lithium. It is demonstrated that the obtained MoS(2)/G composites show three-dimensional architecture and excellent electrochemical performances as anode materials for Li-ion batteries. The MoS(2)/G composite with a Mo:C molar ratio of 1:2 exhibits the highest specific capacity of ∼1100 mAh/g at a current of 100 mA/g, as well as excellent cycling stability and high-rate capability. The superior electrochemical performances of MoS(2)/G composites as Li-ion battery anodes are attributed to their robust composite structure and the synergistic effects between layered MoS(2) and graphene.

Abstract:A facile strategy was designed for the in situ synthesis of MoS2 nanospheres on functionalized graphene nanoplates (MoS2@f-graphene) for use as lithium-ion battery anode materials. A modified Birch reduction was used to exfoliate graphite into few-layer graphene followed by modification with functional groups. Compared to the most common approach of mixing MoS2 and reduced graphene oxide, our approach provides a way to circumvent the harsh oxidation and destruction of the carbon basal planes. In this process, alkylcarboxyl functional groups on the functionalized graphene (f-graphene) serve as sites where MoS2 nanospheres crystallize, and thus create bridges between the MoS2 nanospheres and the graphene layers to effectively facilitate electronic transport and to avoid both the aggregation of MoS2 and the restacking of graphene. As anode materials, this unique MoS2@f-graphene heterostructure has a high specific capacity of 1173 mAh g-1 at a current density of 100 mA g-1 and a good rate capacity (910 mAh g-1 at 1600 mA g-1).

Herein, by taking advantages of the porous structure and the high N content of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) derivatives, a facile and scalable method combining electrospinning and following a hydrothermal process was developed to fabricate MoS2-based composite fibers, in which ultrathin MoS2 nanoplates were vertically assembled on the polyacrylonitrile-MOF-derived N-doped porous carbon nanofibers (PCNF). As expected, benefiting from the hierarchical structure of PCNF and the synergies between MoS2 and PCNF, the obtained PCNF@MoS2 exhibited high capacity and cycling performance in a lithium battery.

Abstract:With society's rapid progress, there is an increasing need for electricity among individuals, but the prevailing source of electricity is still mainly obtained through the burning of nonrenewable fossil fuels, which are not renewable and pose serious environmental hazards. Lithium-ion batteries are used widely for excellent rechargeable capabilities and high energy density. Recently, researchers have become increasingly interested in transition metal sulfides owing to their cost-effectiveness and remarkable specific capacity. However, their commercialization has been hindered by the expansion of material volume and low electrical conductivity during charging and discharging. We have successfully designed and synthesized MoS2 nanosheets loaded on carbon spheres with a 3D hollow structure starting from SiO2 as a template. Due to the doping of carbon materials and particular 3D hollow structures, the optimal C/MoS2-0.3 hollow nanocomposites exhibit excellent electrochemical performance. Following exposure to over 900 cycles at a 0.5 A g-1 ampere density, the materials exhibited an exceptional 958.50 mAh g-1 reversible capacity, demonstrating their remarkable performance.

Abstract:Ultrathin MoSe2/graphene hybrids have been successfully synthesized through a facile ionic liquid-assisted hydrothermal approach. The resultant hybrids are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). It is revealed that the MoSe2 nanosheets in the hybrids exhibit a graphene-like few-layered structural characteristic of 2-3 layers and are well dispersed and anchored on the large flexible graphene sheets. When evaluated as an anode for LIBs, the obtained MoSe2/graphene hybrid electrode demonstrates preferable electrochemical performances with high reversible lithium-storage capacity of similar to 1100 mAh g(-1), superior cyclic stability and excellent rate capability. The extraordinary electrochemical properties can be ascribed to the novel hybrid structures composed of ultrathin few-layered MoSe2 nanosheets and highly conductive graphene as well as the resultant maximized synergistic effect between MoSe2 and graphene.
