Abstract:Coherent transients are directly observed in the time-domain as a sequence of decreasing commensurate pulses in methanol (CH3OH) gas at spacing of 21 ps at room temperature. The dephasing time T2 ~ 23 ps was measured for CH3OH from the decaying amplitude in time.

Abstract:A recently developed time-resolved coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (tr-CARS) technique allows the measurement of vibrational coherences with high frequency differences with the ambient environment. The method is based on the short spatial extension of femtosecond pulses with a broadband tunable nonlinear optical parametric amplifier (NOPA) and an internal time delay between the probe and pump/Stokes pulse pair in the CARS process. The different beat frequencies between Raman modes can be selectively detected as oscillations in the tr-CARS transient signal with the broadband tunable NOPA. In this work, we aim at the Raman C—H stretching vibrations from 2800 cm−1 to 3000 cm−1, within which the different vibrational modes in both ethanol and methanol are selectively excited and simultaneously detected. The high time resolution of the experimental set-up allows one to monitor the vibrational coherence dynamics and to observe the quantum beat phenomena on a terahertz scale. This investigation indicates that the femtosecond tr-CARS technique is a powerful tool for the real-time monitoring and detection of molecular and biological agents, including airborne contaminants such as bacterial spores, viruses and their toxins.

Abstract:Electronic dephasing dynamics of HITCI in ethylene glycol are investigated by degenerate femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. Pulse width and wavelength are varied to change the relative contributions of the coherent and population bleaching terms to the overall transient signal. Results from fitting the experimental data to a multi-mode Brownian oscillator model are presented. The data are also compared with photon-echo measurements.

Abstract:The decay of field-free rotational dynamics is experimentally studied by two complementary methods: laser-induced molecular alignment and terahertz-field-induced molecular orientation. A comparison between the decay rates of different molecular species at various gas pressures reveals that oriented molecular ensembles decay faster than aligned ensembles. The discrepancy in decay rates is attributed to the coherent radiation emitted by the transiently oriented ensembles and is absent from aligned molecules. The experimental results reveal the dramatic contribution of coherent radiative emission to the observed decay of rotational dynamics and underline a general phenomenon expected whenever field-free coherent dipole oscillations are induced.

Nonlinear TeraHertz Coherent Excitation of Vibrational Modes of Liquids

Abstract:We report the first coherent excitation of intramolecular vibrational modes via the nonlinear interaction of a TeraHertz (THz) light field with molecular liquids. A terahertz-terahertz-Raman pulse sequence prepares the coherences with a broadband, high-energy, (sub)picosecond terahertz pulse, that are then measured in a terahertz Kerr effect spectrometer via phase-sensitive, heterodyne detection with an optical pulse. The spectrometer reported here has broader terahertz frequency coverage, and an increased sensitivity relative to previously reported terahertz Kerr effect experiments. Vibrational coherences are observed in liquid diiodomethane at 3.66 THz (122 cm$^{-1}$), and in carbon tetrachloride at 6.50 THz (217 cm$^{-1}$), in exact agreement with literature values of those intramolecular modes. This work opens the door to 2D spectroscopies, nonlinear in terahertz field, that can study the dynamics of condensed-phase molecular systems, as well as coherent control at terahertz frequencies.

Abstract:Spectrally dispersed femtosecond time‐resolved coherent anti‐Stokes Raman spectroscopy is applied to study the ultrafast vibrational dynamics in ethanol at room temperature. The anti‐Stokes intensities were monitored as a function of delay time and wavenumber. By simply changing the timing of the laser pulses, the vibrational dynamics between the excited Raman transitions in ethanol molecules can be tracked and detected. Probing the Debye Dielectric Relaxation in Supercooled Methanol

Abstract:The explanation of the dielectric dynamics in methanol would offer knowledge of the Debye relaxation in supercooled monoalcohols. However, due to the fast crystallization, it is hard to attain the dynamics of pure methanol in the deeply supercooled region. In this paper, we studied the dynamics of methanol 2-ethyl-1-hexanol mixtures with methanol concentration up to 80 mol% using dielectric and calorimetric measurements. Two main relaxations are detected in the dielectric spectra of the mixtures, and the slower one generally reproduces the Debye relaxation features reported in earlier studies of other monoalcohols. The validity of the ideal mixing law is verified for the relaxation time of the slower dynamics in the mixtures. The results suggest that the Debye relaxation is present in the dielectric spectra of methanol. The temperature dependence of the Debye relaxation time is constructed for the supercooled methanol.

Abstract:This paper examines the electronic dephasing dynamics of the dye molecule HITCI in an ethylene glycol solution. Degenerate transient absorption data are presented as a function of laser pulse width and detuning from the absorption maximum. The dephasing dynamics revealed by the experimental results are shown to be non-Markovian. The experimental data cannot be quantitatively described by stochastic theories that assume a single relaxation time for the solvent. A model is presented that includes contributions from both fast and slow modulations to the absorption line shape. Using this approach, quantitative agreement is observed between theory and experiment. These results clearly indicate that multiple time scales for liquid dynamics contribute to the absorption line shape of solute molecules. The solvent parameters obtained are discussed in light of results from complementary experiments designed to measure characteristic relaxation times:
Hyperfine structure of methanol lines at 25 GHz

Abstract:High-dispersion (channel width 0.015 km s^-1) laboratory spectroscopy of the torsion-rotation lines J_2 - J_1 (J = 2 - 6) in the ground torsional state (vt = 0) of the E-type methanol demonstrates multicomponent hyperfine splitting patterns at 25 GHz. The observed patterns are compared with simulations of CH3OH emission lines based on ab initio quantum-mechanical models. A substantial disparity between the laboratory and simulated patterns is revealed. The observed morphology of the line shapes is not reproduced in the model profiles. The found inconsistency requires further refinement of the current quantum-mechanical models to fit the observed hyperfine splitting patterns at 25 GHz.

Abstract:The solvation dynamics of methanol has been investigated using a femtosecond time-resolved fluorescence up-conversion technique. Transient fluorescence spectra of Coumarin 152A dissolved in methanol at different time were reconstructed from the measured fluorescence decays. The Stokes shift was obtained and the solvent response function S-v (t) was fitted using a bimodal function with a fast Gaussian component and a slow bi-exponential component. The Gaussian component was attributed to the effect of free streaming motion of the solvent molecules, whereas the bi-exponential component was caused by the rotational diffusion motion of the solvent molecules. A comparison of our results with reported data was made.
Ultrafast Photodissociation Dynamics and Nonadiabatic Coupling Between Excited Electronic States of Methanol Probed by Time-Resolved Photoelectron Spectroscopy

Abstract:The electronic and nuclear dynamics in methanol, following 156~nm photoexcitation, are investigated by combining a detailed analysis of time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy experiments with electronic structure calculations. The photoexcitation pump pulse is followed by a delayed 260~nm photoionization probe pulse, to produce photoelectrons that are analyzed by velocity map imaging. The yield of mass-resolved ions, measured with similar experimental conditions, are found to exhibit the same time-dependence as specific photoelectron spectral features. Energy-resolved signal onset and decay times are extracted from the measured photoelectron spectra to achieve high temporal resolution, beyond the 20~fs pump and probe pulse durations. When combined with {\it ab initio} calculations of selected cuts through the excited state potential energy surfaces, this information allows the dynamics of the transient excited molecule, which exhibits multiple nuclear and electronic degrees of freedom, to be tracked on its intrinsic few-femtosecond timescale. Within 15~fs of photoexcitation, we observe nuclear motion on the initially bound photoexcited 2$^{1}$A$''$ (S$_2$) electronic state, through a conical intersection with the 1$^{1}$A$'$ (S$_3$) state, which reveals paths to photodissociation following C--O stretch and C--O--H angle opening.

Broadband, background-free methane absorption in the mid-infrared

Abstract:Rotationally resolved, broadband absorption spectra of the fundamental vibrational transition of the asymmetric C-H stretch mode of methane are measured under single-laser-shot conditions using time-resolved optically gated absorption (TOGA). The TOGA approach exploits the difference in timescales between a broadband, fs-duration excitation source and the ps-duration absorption features induced by molecular absorption to allow effective suppression of the broadband background spectrum, thereby allowing for sensitive detection of multi-transition molecular spectra. This work extends the TOGA approach into the mid-infrared (mid-IR) spectral regime, allowing access to fundamental vibrational transitions while providing broadband access to multiple mid-IR transitions spanning ∼150 cm-1 (∼160 nm) near 3.3 μm, thereby highlighting the robustness of this technique beyond previously demonstrated electronic spectroscopy. Measurements are conducted in a heated gas cell to determine the accuracy of the simultaneous temperature and species-concentration measurements afforded by this single-shot approach in a well-characterized environment. Application of this approach toward fuel-rich methane-nitrogen-oxygen flames is also demonstrated.

Abstract:Ultrafast 2D spectroscopy uses correlated multiple light-matter interactions for retrieving dynamic features that may otherwise be hidden under the linear spectrum; its extension to the terahertz regime of the electromagnetic spectrum, where a rich variety of material degrees of freedom reside, remains an experimental challenge. We report a demonstration of ultrafast 2D terahertz spectroscopy of gas-phase molecular rotors at room temperature. Using time-delayed terahertz pulse pairs, we observe photon echoes and other nonlinear signals resulting from molecular dipole orientation induced by multiple terahertz field-dipole interactions. The nonlinear time domain orientation signals are mapped into the frequency domain in 2D rotational spectra that reveal J-state-resolved nonlinear rotational dynamics. The approach enables direct observation of correlated rotational transitions and may reveal rotational coupling and relaxation pathways in the ground electronic and vibrational state.

Abstract:Using infrared-visible sum-frequency generation we have obtained the vibrational spectra of CH stretches of methanol molecules at the interface between methanol vapor and liquid. This is the first vibrational spectrum ever observed from a neat liquid surface. The measured polarization dependence and phase of the nonlinear susceptibility allow us to conclude that the surface methanol molecules are polar oriented with the CH3 group pointing away from the liquid with a very broad orientational distribution.

Abstract:Vibrational energy transfer that occurs after photoexcitation can be tracked in the first several femtoseconds by ultrafast time- and frequency-resolved CARS (coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering) spectroscopy. Vibrational energy transfer from high-frequency modes to lower ones through chemical bond of pure methanol and methanol/Rhodamine 101 (Rh101) solution is detected. Through comparison and analysis of the experimental results, it is found that surrounding molecules have a significant influence on vibrational energy transfer and vibrational couplings among relevant modes.

Abstract:Vibrational dynamics and energy transfer were identified by femtosecond time- and frequency-resolved coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering spectroscopy. Nitromethane (NM) was selectively and collectively excited in an orderly manner. The beating modes involving vibrations were described and the dephasing time of theses vibrational modes was monitored. The results indicated that intramolecular vibrational energy transfer was governed by vibrational couplings. When the NM/methanol mixed solutions were collectively excited, no evidence for a beat or intermolecular energy transfer was found because hydrogen bonds acted as a molecular damper yielding a faster decay of molecular dynamics.
Femtosecond Symmetry Breaking and Coherent Relaxation of Methane Cations at the Carbon K-Edge

Abstract:Understanding the relaxation pathways of photoexcited molecules is essential to gain atomistic level insight into photochemistry. Herein, we perform a time-resolved study of ultrafast molecular symmetry breaking via geometric relaxation (Jahn-Teller distortion) on the methane cation. Attosecond transient absorption spectroscopy with soft X-rays at the carbon K-edge reveals that the distortion occurs within $10\pm 2$ femtoseconds after few-femtosecond strong-field ionization of methane. The distortion activates coherent oscillations in the scissoring vibrational mode of the symmetry broken cation, which are detected in the X-ray signal. These oscillations are damped within $58\pm13$ femtoseconds, as vibrational coherence is lost with the energy redistributing into lower-frequency vibrational modes. This study completely reconstructs the molecular relaxation dynamics of this prototypical example and opens new avenues for exploring complex systems.

Abstract:We present a comparative study on the C-H stretching vibrations at air/DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) interface with both the free-induction decay (FID) coherent vibrational dynamics and the sub-wavenumber high resolution sum-frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy measurements. In principle the frequency-domain and time-domain spectroscopic measurements should generate identical information for a given molecular system. However, when the molecular systems are with several coupled or overlapping vibrational modes, obtaining detailed spectroscopic and coherent dynamics information is not as straightforward and rather difficult from either the time-domain or the frequency domain measurements. For the case of air/DMSO interface that is with moderately complex vibrational spectra, we show that the frequency-domain measurement with sub-wavenumber high-resolution sum-frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy is probably more advantageous than the time-domain measurement in obtaining quantitative understanding of the structure and coherent dynamics of the molecular interface.

Abstract:In order to investigate the decay of nonadiabatic molecular unidirectional rotation (UDR) for nitrogen molecules, we measured the time-resolved rotational Doppler spectroscopy in first four revival periods after instantaneous excitation by a polarization shaped femtosecond laser. The results show that the rotational Doppler shifts decrease with increasing order of revival periods for full and half rotational revivals. Moreover, the maximum alignment of the molecular UDR at half rotational revivals was demonstrated to delay with revival periods increasing. This work is helpful to understand the kinetic processes of collisional decay for nonadiabatic molecular UDR, especially in the several revival periods after excitation.

Abstract:The quantum coherent dynamics of a vibronic wave packet in a molecule passing through a conical intersection can be revealed using attosecond transient coherent Raman spectroscopy. In particular, the time evolution of the electronic coherence can be monitored in the presence of vibrational dynamics. So far, the technique has been investigated without including environmental quantum noise.
