Abstract:Electrochromism refers to the persistent and reversible change of optical properties by an applied voltage pulse.Electrochromic(EC)devices have been extensively studied because of their commercial applications in smart windows of green buildings,display devices and thermal control of equipments.In this review,a basic EC device design is presented based on useful oxides and solid-state electrolytes.We focus on the state-of-the-art research activities related to the structures of tungsten oxide(WO 3 )and nickel oxide(NiO),summarizing the strategies to improve their EC performances and further applications of devices.
Dual-band Electrochromic Film Based on Mesoporous H-Wo3/o-wo3·h2o/r-tio2 for High Performance Smart Windows

Abstract:Porous three-dimensional electrochromic films composed of orthorhombic WO3 center dot H2O, hexagonal WO3, and rutile TiO2 array (h-WO3/o-WO3 center dot H2O/r-TiO2, WWT) were controllably synthesized by a facile two-step hydrothermal technique. Due to the hydrophilicity and array structure of TiO2, the generation of high-quality o-WO3 center dot H2O was significantly promoted, which can reduce the energy barrier to ion diffusion and increase the ion flux by introducing structural water in the interlayer region of WO3. The formation of porous 3-dimensional structure and WO3-TiO2 heterojunction increases the effective contact area, alters the distribution of energy bands, and promotes charge transport, resulting in significantly improved electrochromic properties. An impressive dual -band electrochromic performance with high optical modulation of 68.4% at 633 nm and 59.8% at 1600 nm was achieved in WWT film, respectively, with a fast switching speed (11s/3.3 s at 633 nm and 3 s/9.4 s at 1600 nm for coloring/bleaching), high coloration efficiency (46 cm2 C-1 at 633 nm and 136.8 cm2 C-1 at 1600 nm), and a satisfactory cycling stability at the same time.

Abstract:TiO2 nanocrystals embedded amorphous WO3 electrochromic films have been successfully fabricated with a facile one-step solution process. The structure and electrochromic properties of composite films were studied by transmission electron microscope, scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and electrochemical methods. The results show that anatase TiO2 nanocrystals with a size of about 5-10 nm were homogeneously embedded in the amorphous WO3 matrix (TiO2@WO3). Compared with pure WO3 film, the electrochromic performances of TiO2@WO3 are evidently enhanced. The further electrochemical analysis indicates that the enhancement may be mainly ascribed to the reconstruction of amorphous WO3 matrix with the emerging interfaces between nanocrystals and amorphous matrix. And the extremely high value of the coloration/bleaching reversibility is associated with the suppressing effect of TiO2 nanocrystals upon the Li+ trapping in WO3 matrix. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Electrochromic smart devices with controllable optical property are the most promising alternative to traditional windows and curtains. State of the art preparation and commercialization of large-scale electrochromic films are mainly based on vapor phase deposition, but massive application is limited by high price (due to complex preparation process). Here, an all-solution technology is developed for large-area low-cost preparation of electrochromic films. A WO3/ITO dispersion was successfully developed; high electrical conductivity ITO nanoparticle networks along with ITO coating on glass can serve as extended 3-dimensional electrode, which can form microelectrical field and act as the pathways for electron diffusion to WO3 nanorods. In fact, experiment results show that the surface resistance of WO3/ITO nanocomposite film decreased to 32% of the pure WO3. In other words, the optimum WO3/ITO nanocomposite films in this study with "distributed conductive structure" and submicrometer-sized voids morphology have improved the electrochromic properties remarkably. Our optimized WO3/ITO films exhibit higher optical modulation than pristine WO3 (Delta T = 81.7% vs 62.5% at 630 nm) and a faster switching speed (t(b) = 6 s vs 22 s).

Abstract:Nb-doped WO3 films were prepared on FTO substrates by a facile sol–gel dip coating method. The influence of Nb doping on the microstructure and electrochromic characteristics of the films have beenexplored. The results indicate that the pure WO3 film can achieve a synchronizing modulation of visible and near-infrared light bands by suppling voltage. However, the Nb-doped WO3 films exhibit an ability of independent and selective transmittance modulation in both bands. Moreover, the Nb-doped WO3 films undergo two electrochromic processes at different voltages, which are local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) electrochromic process and electrochemical redox electrochromic process, respectively. These two electrochromic processes exhibit a unique photoelectric conversion behavior, that is, the reversible “bleached and warm” - “bleached and cool” - “colored and cool” modes. Additionally, with the increase of Nb doping content, the LSPR electrochromic effect becomes stronger. The high LSPR enhances the electrochemical redox electrochromic performance of the Nb-doped WO3 films, enabling them to exhibit better electrochromic performance in the visible and near-infrared bands.

Abstract:In this research, Co ions doped WO3 films are introduced with modified morphology and enhanced electrochromic (EC) properties by seed free hydrothermal method. Effects of Co dopant on the structure and electrochromic performance of the WO3 films are systematically investigated. It is found that compared with the pure WO3 film, Co ions doped WO3 films present significant variation in surface morphology, and also exhibit much higher transmittance modulation (75.4% at 680 nm and 76.7% at 890 nm), higher CE value (65.7 cm(2) C-1) and better long-term stability (over 4000 cycles). The explanation of the enhanced EC performance is mainly attributed to the vertically aligned nanostructure of the films, which provided larger specific surface area, larger number of accessible intercalation sites and rapid ions diffusion. Thus, these Codoped WO3 nanowire arrays films may offer a promising way for developing materials with high EC performance.

Abstract:Electrochromic films with a stacked structure of two-dimensional crystalline tungsten trioxide (WO3) nanosheets were fabricated on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) coated glass by a layer-by-layer (LBL) technique. Unique electrochromic property with a slow coloration process but a fast bleaching process was observed during the insertion/extraction process of the protons into/from the stacked structure. The linear relationship between the anodic peak current density and the square root of the potential sweep rate, indicating the insertion/extraction process of the protons into/from the stacked structure is controlled by a diffusion mechanism. The nanosheet film also exhibits a coloration efficiency of 32cm2/C and an excellent long-term stability during the electrochromic process.

Abstract:Electrochromic materials allow for precise control of their optical properties by applying an electric field, which has led to recent developments in energy-saving and indoor temperature control systems like smart windows. The selective incorporation of metal dopants is an effective technique for generating highly advanced semiconducting metal oxides with precisely customized physicochemical characteristics. In this report, we employed a one-step electrodeposition process to fabricate nickel-doped tungsten oxide (W–Ni) thin films, systematically probing the impact of nickel (Ni) doping on the collective material characteristics. Comprehensive X-ray diffraction research revealed significant changes in diffraction patterns, suggesting slight modifications in the structure caused by Ni doping. The scanning electron microscopy showed complex differences in the microstructure of the film, such as a dense surface, porosity, and clustering of nanogranules. The WNi-3% thin film doped at 3 wt. % exhibited excellent electrochromic performance by efficiently handling lithium ions and displaying favorable electrochromic properties. The improved electrode, WNi-3%, showed a maximum optical modulation of 81.90%, exceptional reversibility of 99.4%, and a high coloration efficiency of 75.12 cm2/C. These findings underscore the efficacy of Ni-doping in tailoring the electrochromic properties of nickel-doped tungsten oxide thin films, thereby advancing the frontiers of high-performance electrochromic materials for energy-efficient applications.

Abstract:Poly(DNTD,N,N'-di[p-phenylamino(phenyl)]-1,4,5,8-naphthalene tetracarboxylic diimide) and its nanocomposite film incorporated with WO3 nanoparticles was prepared by a facile electropolymerization method on an indium in oxide (ITO) coated glass slide from the DNTD monomer and WO3 nanoparticles suspended methylene chloride solution. The morphology and microstructure of the nanocomposite film were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The SEM image shows that the WO3 nanoparticles are uniformly embedded in the polymeric matrix. The nanocomposite film also displays smooth topography with evenly sized and uniformly distributed nanoparticles under high resolution AFM observations. An air-stable electrochromical window was assembled and obtained by a homemade electrochemical cell to study the electrochromism and stability of the nanocomposite film. The composite film exhibits multiple colors at both the cathodic and anodic potentials, i.e., light blue at -1.4 V, orange red at -0.8 V, colorless at 0 V, orange green at 0.8 V, light blue at 1.0 V, and deep blue at 1.2 or 1.4 V vs Ag/AgCl in propylene carbonate containing 1.0 M LiClO4 electrolyte. The UV-visible incorporated electrochemical spectroscopy coupled with amperometry were also employed to study the composite film under different potentials in the range of -1.4 to 1.4 V vs Ag/AgCl. The composite film also shows stable electrochromism even after 100 scans. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) analysis suggest the hydrogen bonding formed between the monomers and WO3 particles, resulting in an increased initial oxidation potential for the monomer during the poly(DNTD)/WO3 nanocomposite film formation.

Abstract:Facile fabrication of advanced tungsten oxide (WO3) or WO3 hydrate materials with superior electrochemical and electrochromic properties is of great value in energy-related applications. Self-doping (oxygen vacancy doping) and nanostructure regulation are considered efficient strategies to enhance the performance of bulk WO3 materials. Herein, novel WO3-x hydrate nanosheets were prepared by a one-pot template/surfactant-free solvothermal method employing Na2WO4·2H2O as precursors and ethanol as solvent. The morphology, structure, and composition of the prepared WO3-x hydrate nanosheets were demonstrated by TEM, AFM, XRD, Raman spectrum, and XPS. Furthermore, WO3-x hydrate nanosheets films with mesostructured architecture were formed on FTO glass substrates by the dip-coating process, which exhibited excellent electrochemical and electrochromic performance. As a proof-of-concept example, an analog smart window device (ASWD) was assembled by using the WO3-x hydrate nanosheet film on FTO glass as the working electrode, an FTO glass as the counter electrode, and LiClO4 in propylene carbonate as the electrolyte. The fabricated ASWD presented fascinating electrochromic performance with a wide optical modulation range (82.1%) at the wavelength of 670 nm, moderate switching time (9.6/10.4 s for bleaching/coloration), high coloration efficiency (111.8 cm2/C) and good cyclic stability (maintains 71.6% of the maximum dynamic modulation range after 1000 cycles). Ascribed to the easy preparation process and outstanding electrochromic properties, this kind of WO3-x hydrate nanosheet and its corresponding electrochromic devices are believed to have great potential applications in energy-saving engineering.

Abstract:WO3 thin films fabricated by glancing angle deposition (GLAD) are proposed as excellent electrochromic coatings with favorable ion diffusion. A similar to 500-nm film prepared by GLAD had a relatively large transmittance modulation. The crystallization structure, surface morphology, chemical state, optical and electrochromic properties of WO3 thin films were systematically characterized upon annealing treatment. Compared with annealed WO3 porous nanostructured films, the amorphous as-deposited films exhibited a high coloration efficiency and stable reversibility. Furthermore, the GLAD WO3 films exhibit the tunable angular selectivity under illumination with p-polarized light because of the birefringence, which could extend the application range of nanostructured films in the electrochromic field. Abstract:Bistable electrochromic devices (BECDs) with high energy efficiency have gained extensive attention, due to their great potential applications in the smart windows of buildings and vehicles, as well as in reflective displays. However, the current BECDs are commonly fabricated with liquid or gel electrolytes, which undermines reliability and safety during application. Herein, an all-solid-state BECD with a new structure was designed and developed. It was constructed by an amorphous nanostructured WO 3-x film as the electrochromic layer, a Nafion film as the solid electrolyte, and a nanostructured NiO film as the ion storage layer. This device showed ideal performances with excellent bistability (>7 days for colored state), fast response (<10 s) and promising dual-band tunability, owing to its stable layered structure and high ionic conductivity. More importantly, applications of this BECD in smart windows and reflective displays have been demonstrated.

Abstract:Electrochromic technologies have recently attracted attention due to their energy-saving performance for reducing green gas emissions. The materials design and preparation of electrochromic materials with sufficient microstructure and crystallographic features for suitable ion intercalation/deintercalation are essential for high performance and efficiency. In the present work, nanostructured amorphous tungsten trioxide (WO 3 ) films are electrodeposited to enhance electrochromic properties by controlling the pH of electrolytes. Electron microscopy and spectroelectrochemical analysis demonstrate that smaller grain sizes result in larger electrochemical reactive surface areas and shorter ion diffusion lengths. Consequently, the ions efficiently intercalated and deintercalated during the coloring and bleaching states, respectively. In particular, prepared WO 3 films at electrolyte pH 1.4 demonstrate high optical modulation (74.83%) and good transmittance switching speeds (1.56 and 2.06 s during coloring and bleaching, respectively) at 650 nm, as well as comparable coloration efficiency (61.92 cm 2 C −1 at 650 nm).

Abstract:Tungsten oxide (WO3) films were prepared on indium–tin oxide (ITO) glass by sol–gel method. The influence of annealing temperature on the structural, morphological, optical, electrochemical, and electrochromic properties has been investigated. The film annealed at 250 °C with an amorphous structure exhibits a noticeable electrochromic performance, such as the highest optical modulation of 58.5 % at 550 nm, high electrochemical stability, and excellent reversibility (Q b/Q c = 96.3 %). An electrochromic (EC) device based on WO3/NiO complementary structure shows improved performance. It exhibits high optical transmittance modulation of 62 % at 550 nm, excellent cycling stability, and relatively fast electrochromic response time (10 s for coloration and 19 s for bleaching).

Abstract:WO3, LiTaO3, NiOx, ITO films were respectively deposited by magnetron sputtering at room temperature and different liquid nitrogen flux cooling, of which the electrochromic in full solid film consists. XRD, SEM, spectrophotometer were used to analyze the films. The Results reveal that the WO3 films made at low temperature are amorphous that is of benefit for Li+ to inject and eject. The average transmittance variation of WO3 film between bleached and colored state can reach 70% at 400-800 nm. The LiTaO3 films have smaller granularity and closed structure. Low temperature can create more Ni2+ to participate the electrochromic reaction and more pore for the H+ to inject and eject. The device exhibits remarkable electrochromic characteristic.

Abstract:Nickel oxide (NiO) has great application prospects as a counter electrode in electrochromic devices, such as smart windows and displays. However, the cycle stability and electrochromic properties of pure NiO films are rather poor in lithium ion based non-aqueous electrolyte. To improve these properties, Li-Ti codoped NiO films were prepared by sol-gel spin coating technique. Compared with undoped NiO films, Li and Ti doping deteriorate the symmetry of NiO cubic phase, increase lattice disorder and change the valence state of nickel in the films. The investigations of NiO-based films in LiClO4/PC electrolyte reveal enhancement of electrochromic properties and cycle stability with Li-Ti co-doping. Finally, electrochromic devices assembled with poly(3,4-(2,2-dimethylpropylenedioxy) thiophene) and Li-Ti-NiO films exhibit rapid color change within 1 s, excellent optical variation for about 56% at 580 nm and high stability up to 1,000,000 cycles. Abstract:Electrochromic materials hold great promise in energy-saving windows of buildings and various functional glasses. When constructing a private space, it is difficult for electrochromic materials to achieve zero transmission in the entire visible light range and achieve 100% privacy, which limits their applications in public places. In this work, a metal organic framework-derived nanostructured film was prepared, and a green multivalent cation (Zn2+, Al3+) aqueous solution was used as the electrolyte to provide multiple electrons in electrochromism. This system can achieve low transmittance, rapid response, and good stability. The as-obtained material can achieve zero transmission in the range of 300–1600 nm. Abstract:Electrochromic materials have attracted much attention due to their promising applications in smart windows and thermal control. However, NiO is a weak point for a complementary ECD and needs to be improved due to its low optical modulation and charge density. In this work, the W-doped NiO films are designed and prepared by RF magnetron co-sputtering to improve the performance of the NiO. The results shows that the optical modulation of the W-NiO (52.7%) is significantly improved compared with pure NiO (33.8%), which can be assigned to the increase in lattice boundaries due to the W doping. The response time of W-NiO is 8.8 s for coloring and 7.2 s for bleaching, which is similar to that of NiO film. The all-solid-state electrochromic devices (ECDs) that employed W-NiO as a complementary layer are prepared and exhibit a high-transmittance modulation of 48.5% in wavelengths of 450–850 nm and an emittance modulation of 0.28 in 2.5–25 μm, showing great application potential in the field of smart windows and spacecraft thermal control devices. The strategy of preparing NiO doped by W indicates an innovative direction to obtain ECDs with high performance.

High-performance electrochromic WO3 film driven by controllable crystalline structure and its all-solid-state device

Abstract:In this paper, a WO3 film was prepared with a controllable crystalline structure by adjusting the power in a magnetron sputtering deposition process. This allowed the WO3 film combine the advantages of excellent cyclic stability imparted by highly ordered structure WO3, and fast response and satisfactory coloration efficiency imparted by highly disordered structure WO3. The adjusted WO3 sputtered film displayed superior electrochromic properties comprising high transmittance modulation (74.4% at 550 nm), large coloration efficiency (41.5 cm2·C- 1), fast switching speed in addition to excellent cycle stability (93.5% transmittance modulation retention over 1000 cycles). More importantly, an all-solid-state electrochromic device (ECD) founded on this WO3 film exhibited excellent electrochromic performance due to enhanced electrochromic properties of WO3 layer. This work demonstrates a novel way for improving the performances of electrochromic (EC) films and devices.

Abstract:Electrochromism has emerged as a pivotal technology in the pursuit of energy efficiency and environmental sustainability, spurring significant research efforts aimed at the creation of advanced electrochromic devices. Most electrochromic materials are used for smart window applications. However, current electrochromic materials have been applied to new energy vehicles, cell phone back covers, AR glasses, and so on. More application scenarios put forward more requirements for the color of the colored states. Choosing the right color change in the application will be the trend in the future. In this work, tungsten trioxide (WO3) thin films were prepared by adjusting the in situ heating temperature. WO3 with a crystalline structure showed excellent cyclic stability (5000 cycles), electrochromic performance (ΔT = 77.7% at 633 nm, CE = 37.1 cm2/C), relatively fast bleaching/coloring speed (20.0 s/19.4 s), and the darkest coloring effect (L* = 29.32, a* = 7.41, b* = -22.12 for the colored state). These findings offer valuable insights into the manipulation of smart materials and devices, contributing to the advancement of electrochromic technology.
